Two days after the glass.
Seraphine had been planning the hybrid propagation work since the first week of her assessment — it was the most technically demanding component of the restoration, the part that would determine whether the living botanical record of her father's work could continue beyond the specimens currently in place. The protocol was his: detailed, precise, developed across years of failed attempts with the patience he had always brought to things he believed were worth the time.
She had not told Cassian what she was doing that morning. She had come to the conservatory early and set up her materials in the northeastern section, beside the white flowering specimen that had been the first thing in this house to recognize her, and she had begun.
The work required complete attention and received it. She was an hour in, both hands occupied with the delicate mechanical process of transferring pollen from one bloom to another, when she heard footsteps.
Not Rowan — he was working in the western section on a new bracket installation, and she could hear the particular sounds of that work from here. Not Isolde — Isolde moved differently. Not Lady Maribel — Maribel had a quality of presence that announced itself several seconds before she arrived.
Cassian came around the end of the specimen row and stopped when he saw what she was doing.
She did not look up. She was at a moment in the process that did not permit distraction — the transfer had to be completed before the pollen viability window closed, which was approximately ninety more seconds.
He understood this without being told. He waited.
When she finished and set down the transfer brush and straightened, he was standing at a respectful distance, looking at the two specimens she had been working with, with the expression of someone trying to understand what they were seeing.
"Cross-pollination," she said. "Two varieties that share a parent species. The hybrid my father was attempting before — " She paused. "Before he stopped working here. I found the protocol in the notebook. It should be achievable with the specimens currently in place."
Cassian looked at the two flowering plants. *"Should be,"* he said.
"Should be," she confirmed. "It's been attempted before. The conditions here are better now than they were — I've been adjusting the soil and light exposure for three weeks. And I have the complete protocol, which I'm not sure he had access to at the end."
He was quiet for a moment. Then: "What can I do?"
She looked at him. The question was genuine — not polite, not performative. He wanted to be useful in a specific way, in this specific work, and he was asking how.
She had him remove his gloves.
"I'll ruin them," she said, holding up her own hands, which were already stained with the amber-colored sap of the dominant specimen. "And gloves reduce the sensitivity you need for this part."
He removed his gloves without comment and tucked them in his vest pocket, which was such a characteristic action — precise, tidy, adapted immediately to the new information — that she almost smiled.
She showed him what to do. Not explaining more than necessary — she had learned his learning style in three weeks of shared space, the way he absorbed demonstration better than description, the way he preferred to try something and correct it rather than be told about it in advance. She showed him once and then handed him the task and watched with the peripheral attention she maintained for students, ready to intervene if needed.
He was careful. More careful than she expected — though she was not sure why she had expected otherwise, given everything she had observed about the quality of his attention when it was fully deployed. His hands were steady in the way her hands were steady, the steadiness of someone who had learned that certain work required you to put yourself aside and just do the work.
They spent an hour in this way, working through the protocol in the companionable near-silence of two people engaged in the same careful task. She answered his questions as they arose — brief, specific questions, the questions of someone learning rather than performing learning. He did not ask about her father. She did not offer. The work was enough.
The sap was the problem she had anticipated and had not entirely solved for.
*Lunaria noctiflora's* dominant parent species produced a sap during its flowering period that was primarily composed of a complex carbohydrate — not harmful, not toxic, but extremely adhesive in the specific way of resins that had evolved to facilitate seed dispersal by attachment. It dried amber-colored on skin. It was not immediately soluble in water. She had a solvent in her kit that dealt with it, but the solvent took time to work.
By the time they finished the morning's propagation work, both their hands were thoroughly stained.
Cassian looked at his hands with an expression she couldn't immediately categorize — not dismay, not amusement, something quieter.
"Your father's formula for the solvent is in the notebook," she said. "I'll mix a batch at the work sink."
They went to the conservatory's work sink — a practical stone trough near the house entrance, used for cleaning tools and washing soil from hands. She mixed the solvent from the components she kept in her kit, applied it to her own hands first to demonstrate, then prepared a portion for him.
He applied it and they stood at the sink waiting for it to work, hands in the air in the slightly ridiculous position that the solvent required — surface tension was more effective than friction — and in this small enforced pause she looked at his hands.
The cut from two days ago was healing cleanly. The sap had caught in the creases of his knuckles and the lines of his palm and was waiting for the solvent to release it, and in the amber light from the northeast panel it looked almost ornamental — like the hands of someone who had been doing work that left its mark.
"What do you smell?" she said.
He looked up.
"The sap. It smells different on different people — the temperature of your skin changes the volatilization of the compounds." She raised her own hands slightly. "I smell orange blossom."
He looked at his hands for a moment with the quality she had learned to recognize as genuine consideration rather than social delay. Then he raised them, very slightly, and breathed.
"Pine," he said. "And something older. Amber, maybe — the material, not the color." He lowered his hands. "The resin."
She looked at her own hands. Orange blossom. The smell of the nursery and her father's study and every morning she had checked the soil before anything else. The smell that had arrived unexpectedly in Rowan's tool kit and had undone her. The smell that was so specifically her own that encountering it in a stained hand was less botanical fact and more the shock of recognition.
"Your father's notes on this species," Cassian said — quietly, not quite casually, the tone of someone approaching something from an indirect angle. "Did he write about the olfactory response differential?"
"He noted it. He thought it might be related to the light-retention sensitivity — that people with higher botanical attunement might produce more complex volatile compounds in their skin chemistry." She paused. "He wrote it as a hypothesis, not a conclusion."
"It would fit the theoretical model," Cassian said. "The sensitivity isn't just photonic. It's multisensory. Your father understood that."
The solvent had done its work. She rinsed her hands at the sink and dried them on the work cloth. He did the same. The amber stain was gone, leaving hands that looked like their ordinary selves, with the ordinary evidence of ordinary work.
They sat on the stone edge of the nearest planting bed — not by arrangement, simply because they were both already sitting in the way you sat when work was finished and the next thing hadn't started yet — and the conservatory's late-morning light lay across the floor in its usual colored patterns and everything was quiet in the way it was quiet after concentrated effort.
He was looking at the propagation specimens.
"If this works," he said, "the hybrid will be the first new specimen in this conservatory in six years."
"If it works."
"It will work," he said. Not encouragement — assessment. The tone of a man who had been looking at the same evidence she had and had arrived at the same conclusion.
She looked at him. He was still looking at the specimens with the specific quality of regard she had seen from him before — the regard of someone in relationship with a space, with its history, with what it contained and what it meant.
"Your father was right," he said. Quietly, not looking at her — looking at the flowering specimens, at the white bloom that had been the first thing here to recognize her. "You do know the difference."
She stood, because the moment was becoming something she wasn't ready to hold still inside. She gathered her kit and her notebook and moved toward the door with the deliberateness of a person making a decision about pace.
She was almost at the door when she understood that she was going to carry what he had said the way she carried her father's voice — in the specific cavity below the sternum where the things that were real and weightful lived, where the orange blossom smell lived, where the question mark in the margin of a notebook lived.
She carried it and went inside.
Behind her, in the conservatory, the white flower in the northeastern corner turned its bloom approximately three degrees in the direction she had gone.
No one saw it. It happened anyway.
