The letter arrived on a Wednesday.
Seraphine saw it on the entrance hall table when she came downstairs — addressed to Lord Ardent, from the Halewick Institute for Luminological Studies, the formal letterhead she recognized from one of the research documents she had found in the east wing cabinet. She did not touch it. She went to breakfast.
Cassian was already there, reading the letter with the contained expression he wore when processing information that required management. Lady Maribel was at the sideboard. Rowan had not yet come down.
"Halewick is requesting a visit," Cassian said, without looking up, which meant he had heard her come in. "Day after tomorrow. He describes it as a collegial review of the restoration progress."
"Are you going to allow it?"
"Refusing will generate questions I'm not ready to answer publicly." He set the letter down. "I'll allow the visit and use it to observe what he's attempting to learn."
Seraphine sat down and poured her tea. "He'll want to speak with me."
"Yes."
"I'll meet with him." She looked at the letter on the table. "In the library. I'll bring my work materials. Nothing from the east wing, nothing from Evelise's box."
Cassian looked at her with the expression he wore when she had arrived at the correct tactical conclusion before he had finished working toward it himself. It was not quite surprise and not quite satisfaction but something between the two.
"Rowan should stay in the conservatory," she said. "Visible. Working. It normalizes the situation."
"Agreed."
Lady Maribel turned from the sideboard. "I will be unavailable," she said, which from Maribel constituted both a statement and a strategy. Her unavailability would prevent Halewick from having the conversation with her that he would undoubtedly want to have, the conversation that had been building since his letter the previous week.
Halewick arrived at ten o'clock on Friday morning.
Seraphine watched him come up the drive from the conservatory window. He walked the way he always moved — with the ease of someone who had learned long ago that appearing at ease was the most effective form of armor. His coat was excellent. His posture was the posture of a man who had been taken seriously his entire professional life and had internalized the posture of a man who expected to continue to be taken seriously.
Cassian greeted him in the entrance hall. Seraphine heard their voices — formal, professional, the vocabulary of colleagues who had a complicated history being managed in a small space. She waited in the library until she heard Cassian's step in the corridor and then his knock at the library door.
"He's ready to speak with you."
She had arranged the library carefully. Her work materials were on the table — the legitimate ones, the botanical assessment notes and the restoration timeline and the specimen catalogues. The room looked like the workspace of someone engaged in exactly the work she had been contracted to do. Nothing extraordinary. Nothing hidden. Just work.
Halewick entered with the specific quality of a man entering a space he had been in before and was now seeing differently, filtered through the lens of the person currently occupying it.
"Miss Vale." The warmth was genuine. This was one of the things about him she had identified at the gala and had not stopped finding important: he genuinely liked her, or genuinely liked the idea of her — the daughter of a man he had admired, someone who shared the capacity her father had possessed, someone who represented the continuation of work he believed in. His regard was real. That was what made it complicated.
"Dr. Halewick." She gestured to the chair across from her work materials. "Please."
He sat with the ease of someone who sat in other people's workspaces comfortably. He looked at the materials on the table with the practiced assessment of a researcher reviewing a colleague's work. She watched him assess and noted what his eyes moved to first: not the botanical specimens, not the restoration timeline. The map of the conservatory's planting system. The notation in its margins.
He recognized the notation. Of course he did — he had helped develop it.
"The restoration is progressing well," he said. "From what I was able to see this morning, the main botanical systems are responding."
"We're approximately on schedule," she said. "The root systems in the central section required more intervention than the initial survey suggested, but we've addressed that."
"And the light-retention specimens?"
"Stable," she said. "Responding normally to the seasonal light changes."
He nodded, assessing. "I noticed the cross-pollination setup in the northeastern section. Your father's hybrid protocol?"
She looked at him steadily. "Yes."
Something moved in his expression — something that was genuinely moved, genuinely responsive to the idea of her father's work continuing. She filed this. The emotion was real. The things built on top of the real emotion were the problem.
He spoke about her father for twenty minutes with the fluency of someone who had spent years in proximity to a person and had absorbed them. The stories were specific. The admiration was not manufactured. She listened and collected and gave back as much as was appropriate for someone who was being offered legitimate tribute to a parent she had loved.
Then he made the offer.
He framed it well — he always framed things well. The incomplete manuscript, the unfinished theoretical framework, the legacy that deserved completion. His institute. His resources. His commitment to ensuring that Professor Elian Vale's name was attached to the work that bore his contribution.
She let him finish.
"I don't have the final manuscript," she said.
His expression absorbed this without showing what it was absorbing. "You mentioned at the gala that you have access to his notebooks."
"I have some of his working notebooks. Not the final manuscript. I'm not certain the final manuscript exists as a completed document — his notes suggest he was still working on a core theoretical problem when he died." All of this was true. "If I find it in the course of this restoration, I'll of course be thinking about the best way to ensure his work is properly attributed."
"Of course," he said. And smiled the smile of someone who had heard an answer that was not yes but was not no and had decided to treat it as a negotiation rather than a refusal.
After another few minutes of professional exchange, he rose to leave. She walked him to the library door and shook his hand with the correct warmth and watched him move toward the entrance hall where Cassian was waiting.
At the door to the conservatory — the glass door that looked into the central section, where Rowan was visible in the upper housing and the seventeen specimens were visible in their rows — Halewick stopped.
He stood at the glass and looked in.
Seraphine was several feet behind him, and from her angle she could see his face reflected faintly in the glass — that slight reflection that glass produced when the light was right. And she could see in it what she could not have seen if she had been standing in front of him: the thing beneath the warmth and the professional manner and the genuine conviction, the thing that lived under all of it.
Patience.
Not the patience of someone who was waiting for a conversation to conclude. The patience of someone who had been working toward something for a very long time and had learned that the long game was the only game that mattered. The patience of someone who had decided, some years ago, what he was going to do and had simply been waiting for the conditions to align.
He was calculating. The conservatory, its current state, the people in it, the timeline of the restoration. She was one of the variables in the calculation. She could see it.
He turned and she had her expression ready — attentive, professional, giving nothing.
"The conservatory looks well," he said. "Your father would have been pleased."
"I hope so," she said.
He left.
She waited until the carriage had gone down the drive before she moved, and then she went to find Cassian, who was in his study with the door open — waiting, she understood, for exactly this.
"He's very good," she said.
"Yes."
"He says the true things about the parts that are true. That's what makes the other parts dangerous." She sat down across from him. "He's not going to stop. He thinks the restoration is bringing the system back to operational capacity, and he's right, and he's going to want to use that capacity when it's ready."
"I know."
"We need to move faster than he is."
Cassian looked at her for a moment with the grey eyes that had the quality, in this light, of someone who had been making calculations of their own. "The Royal Ethics Committee," he said. "Evelise's documentation plus the collection logs plus the gear modification. If we compile the full case —"
"It needs to go by the end of the month," she said. "Before the system reaches the threshold Rowan identified in the gear modification timing."
"Three weeks."
"Three weeks," she confirmed.
They looked at each other across the study in the particular way they had developed — the way of two people who were thinking about the same problem from complementary angles and had learned to trust the intersection of those angles.
"All right," he said.
"All right," she agreed.
Outside the study window, the conservatory sat in the afternoon light, its glass panels catching the low autumn sun and doing what they had always done: holding it, in their particular way, longer than the sun itself stayed.
