He came to find her three days later.
She was in the library in the late afternoon, working on the compiled evidence package — organizing the photographs, the copied documents, the gear modification report Rowan had prepared in his precise engineering language, the collection logs, Evelise's letter. She was building the submission the way she built botanical assessments: systematically, with attention to what could be proven versus what could be inferred, making the distinction clearly so that the reviewing body could follow the logic without being asked to accept conclusions that the evidence didn't directly support.
Cassian came in and said: "I think it's time to go into the east wing properly."
She looked up. He had the key in his hand — not her copy, his copy, the original. He was wearing the same expression he wore when he had made a decision and was acting on it rather than announcing it — purposeful, settled, the expression that meant the calculation had been completed some time before this moment.
"Now?" she said.
"Before I change my mind," he said. Which was honest in a way she had learned to value — the specific honesty of a man who knew his own patterns well enough to account for them.
She put down the evidence files and went with him.
The east wing in the afternoon light was different from the east wing at midnight — she had seen both now, had been in it twice before this, but this was the first time in full afternoon light with both of them standing there without urgency or crisis, simply looking.
The first thing she noticed was the sound. Or rather: the quality of the absence of sound. The main conservatory had its ambient acoustic character — the slight resonance of glass-enclosed space, the occasional tick of metal contracting in temperature change, the distant presence of the sea. The east wing had something different: a quality of stillness that was not absence but presence, the way certain rooms felt inhabited by something that was not a person but was also not nothing.
The seventeen specimens in the main conservatory glowed faintly. The east wing's specimens glowed differently — more steadily, more directionally, as though the accumulated charge of the space was organizing itself rather than simply existing.
"It's been running longer," she said.
"Six years since the last formal maintenance. Two years since I closed it." He stood just inside the door, looking at the space with the quality she had seen from him in the main conservatory — the look of someone in a long relationship with a place. "Before I closed it, this section was what the whole system was meant to become. The most advanced implementation of the botanical-photonic integration. The place where everything the research had developed actually worked."
She moved deeper into the space, doing what she always did: looking before touching, mapping before intervening. The specimens along the north wall were species she had catalogued in the main section but older — the same varieties but with the additional depth of longer exposure, the cellular integration of light-retention that her father had described as needing decades to fully develop.
The mirror system was as she had seen it at midnight, but in daylight she could study its engineering in a way the darkness hadn't permitted. It was more complex than the main section's array — more mirrors, finer adjustments, a degree of control over the light's direction and quality that would have required considerable expertise to design. She traced the sight lines with her eye and understood, with the slow satisfaction of a hypothesis confirmed, how the system worked in its intended form: the mirrors gathered and refined the incoming light, the treated glass panels distributed it through the space, and the botanical specimens both received and amplified it in a feedback loop that was — in its undamaged, unmeddled-with state — elegantly self-sustaining.
Halewick had not broken this. He had parasitized it.
She came to the central plinth.
The glass panels she had seen at midnight were here in daylight — their flat surfaces catching the afternoon light that came through the east-facing windows and refracting it into the interior of the collection. She understood now, looking at them in full light, what she had understood intellectually before but not viscerally: these were not simply storage media. Each panel had been treated with botanical compounds specific to an individual — the oils and extracts that her father had identified as the biological key to individual resonance. Each panel was tuned to a specific person's emotional frequency.
She picked up the nearest panel and looked at it.
The warmth came through her hands as it always did — and she understood this warmth now, after weeks of study, as something other than physical warmth. It was the warmth of stored presence, of accumulated attention, of the slow photonic residue of someone's inner life concentrated over months of sustained exposure.
She put the panel down.
"Whose was this one?" she said.
He came to stand beside her and looked at the panel. On its frame, in the notation system: a date and an identifier code. He translated the code without hesitation. "One of the early research participants. A volunteer, from the original program, before Halewick shifted the methodology. This one consented."
She looked at the others. The dates. The identifiers. She began to count the ones whose dates fell in the period of Lady Oriane's light therapy sessions.
There were eleven.
Eleven panels, collected over nine months, from a woman who had been told she was receiving treatment.
"Cassian," she said.
He was already looking at the eleven panels. She could see in his face the thing she had seen when she told him his mother had not been sick — but larger now, more specific, because this was not an abstraction. This was a count. This was the material evidence of a number of sessions, a number of extractions, a number of times his mother had sat in this space believing she was being helped.
"He took eleven sessions from her," he said.
"Over nine months," she said. "Before the symptoms became severe enough that even he couldn't continue."
He looked at the panels for a long moment.
Then he turned away from the plinth — the movement she had seen before, the movement of needing not to be facing something directly while he held it — and went to the eastern wall of the wing, where the glass panels gave a view of the sea cliff and the water beyond. The sea was grey-green in the afternoon light, permanent and enormous and entirely indifferent to what had been done in this room.
She came to stand beside him. Not speaking. Just beside.
After a while he said, to the sea: "She would have been embarrassed by this. By the idea that someone could take something from her without her knowing. She was —" he paused, working for the word "— proud, in the good sense. Precise about what she was and wasn't willing to give."
"I know," Seraphine said. She did not know Lady Oriane. But she knew the glass panel she had held, and she knew what she had felt through it, and she knew that the woman who had produced that specific quality of emotional resonance — the tired, faithful, loving quality she had read in the glass — was not a woman who had consented to be reduced to an extraction.
"She deserved better," he said.
"Yes," she said. "She did."
They stood at the glass together and looked at the sea.
After a long time, he said: "There's a panel over here. In the corner."
She turned and followed him to the far corner of the east wing, where a single panel stood apart from the others — not on the central plinth but on a separate small shelf, its frame slightly different from the others, newer.
She looked at the identifier on the frame. The date: within the last year.
"That's not your mother's," she said.
"No," he said. "It's not from any period of formal access." He looked at it. "Someone collected this recently. Without authorization. Without — without anyone in this house knowing."
She looked at the panel. The glass had the same depth as the others, the same treated quality. But it was new, and it had been placed here deliberately, and it meant that Halewick or Voss had been in this room since Cassian had closed it, had been conducting the same extraction protocol that had been conducted on Lady Oriane, and had done it to someone who had been here within the last year.
"Who has been in this house in the last year?" she said.
He looked at the panel and she could see him reviewing the question — guest lists, visits, the ordinary traffic of a household. And then she watched him arrive at the same conclusion she was arriving at simultaneously, through slightly different paths.
"The identifier," she said. "Can you read it?"
He looked at the code on the frame. He was quiet for a moment.
"It's Maribel's," he said.
