The evening after the east wing was quieter than most evenings.
Dinner was the four of them — Seraphine, Rowan, Cassian, Lady Maribel — and the particular quality of the meal was shaped by the fact that two of the four people at the table were carrying knowledge about the third that the third did not know they carried. Seraphine ate her soup and watched Lady Maribel with the careful peripheral attention she maintained for important things and thought about what it meant that the panel in the corner of the east wing bore Maribel's identifier.
It did not mean Maribel had been complicit. She had been deliberate about this conclusion, had reached it slowly and from both directions to make sure it held. Maribel had been a victim of the same methodology as Oriane — targeted, probably, for the same reason Oriane had been targeted: proximity to the conservatory, sustained presence in the house, the emotional resonance of someone who had loved the people in this space over a long period. Halewick had collected Maribel the same way he had collected Oriane, without her knowledge, without her consent.
The difference was that Maribel's panel was recent. Which meant it was still happening.
She looked at Lady Maribel — the precise posture, the controlled face, the woman who had told her this morning that Halewick had contacted her and that a part of her still wanted to believe he could give her back something she had lost. And she understood, in the particular way of understanding that arrived all at once rather than by accumulation: Halewick was using the longing. He was offering something real — the possibility of accessing what had been stored from Oriane, of feeling close to her again — and extracting something in exchange, from Maribel's grief, without her knowledge.
It was so specific and so cruel that it almost required admiration for the precision of it.
Rowan, across the table, caught her eye briefly. He had not been told about the east wing visit. She had not decided yet when to tell him — she needed to process it with Cassian first, needed to be clear on the implications before bringing another person into it. Rowan looked at her with the amber eyes that always knew when something was happening and trusted her to tell him when she was ready. She gave him a small nod.
After dinner, Rowan went to his room with the architectural drawing she had given him to review. Lady Maribel retired with the headache she sometimes cited when she needed to leave a social situation before it required more of her. Cassian said he had correspondence to attend to.
Seraphine went to the library and spread her evidence files on the table and stared at them.
The case against Halewick was close. Three weeks, she had said, and she had meant it — the timeline of the system's approach to the activation threshold that Rowan had identified was not negotiable. But close was not complete, and complete was what the Royal Ethics Committee would require. She had Evelise's notebook and letter, the collection logs, the gear modification report. She still needed two things: a clear accounting of the Maribel panel's timeline, which required access to records she had not yet fully analyzed, and a witness statement from someone who had been present during the original research program. Someone who was still alive and willing to speak.
She was organizing the files by category when she heard the door.
Cassian came in with the two cups of tea that had become, over the past several weeks, his particular form of arrival announcement — not the knock, not the courtesy of formal entry, but the practical provision of something useful that said: I am here, I thought you might want this, I intend to stay for a while.
He set one cup beside her files without comment and carried his to the other side of the table. He looked at the arrangement of documents — the same careful look he always gave to things she was working on, the reading-before-speaking quality.
She let him look.
"You're still two items short," he said.
"Yes." She wrapped her hands around the cup. "The Maribel panel's timeline. And a live witness."
"The panel's timeline I can establish from the conservatory maintenance records — cross-referencing the photonic output levels with the date of the panel's placement. It will take a day."
"And the witness?"
He was quiet for a moment. "There is one. A researcher who was present during the original program and who was peripherally aware of Halewick's shift in methodology. He left voluntarily before the program ended. He has never spoken publicly about it because — " He paused. "Because he was afraid. He had professional reasons to stay silent."
"Can you reach him?"
"I've been in contact with him over the years. He owes me nothing. But I think — if I approach him directly, with the documentation we have — he might decide the time for silence is past."
"Will you try?"
"Yes," he said. "This week."
She nodded. She returned to the files. He remained at the other side of the table and she could hear him working — papers, the soft sounds of a pen, the occasional small sound of someone in sustained focused work. It was a particular quality of shared silence, the silence of two people working in the same space, and she had stopped registering it as unusual several days ago, which itself said something.
At some point in the evening she looked up and found that she had been staring at the same file page for several minutes without reading it, and that the reason was the specific quality of the silence in the room, which had the particular warmth of something that was not silence at all but the very specific compound of two people's sustained presence in the same small space.
She looked at the document again and read it this time.
She was connecting the chronology of the collection log dates to the notation system's measurement records when she became aware that the room had changed — not the physical room, the quality of the attention in it. She looked up.
Cassian was not working. He was looking at her.
Not with the assessment quality of his usual looking. With the quality she had catalogued from the waltz, from the conservatory at midnight, from the cliff edge — the quality of a man who had been doing something else and had stopped doing it and was now doing this instead, and had not quite made the decision but was not not making it.
She held the file in her hands and held his gaze.
He stood.
Not quickly. Not with urgency. With the quality of a man doing something he had been moving toward for some time and was now simply arriving at the moment of it. He came around the end of the table — not a long distance — and stopped in front of her.
She looked up at him. The lamp was between them and slightly to the left, which meant the light on his face was warm and not perfectly even, which meant she could see both the calculation and the thing beneath the calculation — the thing that was doing the actual work of bringing him here, the thing that had been doing that work for longer than either of them had been naming it.
He looked at her with the expression of someone who had decided.
She set the file down.
He reached out and took one of her hands — not decisively, not dramatically, with the specific deliberateness of someone doing something for the first time that they want to do correctly. His hand was warm and dry and entirely still around hers. She did not look at their hands. She looked at him.
He leaned forward, very slowly, very carefully, the way he did everything that required him to be sure — and in the fraction of a second before—
The conservatory alarm sounded.
The high, clear bell of the east wing temperature monitor, the same alarm that had rung when the system had activated two weeks ago, the alarm she had told herself was simply the temperature differential of the evening — but this was louder. More sustained. The alarm did not settle after the first pulse the way it had before.
Cassian straightened immediately — the shift in his attention was total, the calculation complete in a fraction of a second. His hand released hers. "East wing," he said, the words already in motion before the sentence was finished. "Temperature spike. The system is accelerating."
She was already moving.
They left the library together, moving through the house toward the conservatory, and behind them the library held the abandoned files and the two cups of tea and the space between where they had been standing, and the lamp burned on in the empty room as though it was still necessary, as though it was still keeping watch over something that had not quite happened yet but was very close.
