The east wing temperature had risen six degrees in forty minutes.
This was not, as Cassian explained while they were moving through the conservatory toward the east wing doors, immediately dangerous to the botanical specimens — they were adapted to a wider temperature range than standard plants. But it was not normal, and it was not the gradual, seasonal change that a heating system would produce. It was the specific temperature profile of the light-retention system approaching a threshold output state.
"The photonic activity is amplifying," he said, unlocking the east wing doors. "When the system approaches full capacity, it generates its own heat as a byproduct of the internal light-loop. It's one of the indicators my father used to measure the system's state."
"Like a fever," she said.
"Like a fever," he agreed.
They went in.
The east wing at this hour — shortly before midnight — was different from the east wing in the afternoon. The specimens were not simply glowing. They were producing something that was less like light and more like luminance — a quality of illumination that seemed to come from within the space itself rather than from any directional source, the botanical equivalent of bioluminescence but steadier, more architectural, organized rather than ambient.
She moved to the mirror array and looked at it. The mirrors were still. The gear system was in its standard position — the modification that created the midnight activation had not yet engaged. She looked at the clock on the east wing wall: eleven fifty-two.
"Eight minutes," she said.
"Wait here," he said.
He went to the documentation cabinet and took out the measurement instruments — the photonic output meter, the temperature sensors, the spectrum analyzer that she had seen catalogued in the east wing equipment list but never seen in use. He set them up with practiced efficiency, the motions of someone who had operated this equipment before, and she positioned herself near the central plinth and watched.
At eleven fifty-eight the temperature climbed another half degree.
At eleven fifty-nine the mirrors shifted.
Not dramatically. The movement was slow and precisely controlled — the gear system engaging its modified sequence, the mirror array beginning its rotation to the locked angle. She watched the movement with the attention she brought to things she had studied theoretically and was now seeing in practice, and she understood viscerally what the drawings and descriptions had only conveyed abstractly: the system was elegant. It was genuinely, extraordinarily elegant. Even in its compromised, parasitized state, the elegance of the original design was visible — the way the components worked together, the economy of the mechanism, the precision of the angles.
Her father had worked on this.
Midnight.
The moonlight that entered through the east-facing panels — thin, cold, silver-grey in quality — struck the primary mirror and began its passage through the array. She watched it move through the sequence of reflections, each mirror refining the frequency and direction slightly, the light losing its cold moonlight quality and gaining something warmer, more specific, something that she could see was not simply reflected moonlight but moonlight that had been transformed by its passage through glass that had been holding other light for years.
The light reached the central plinth and the collection panels.
And then something happened that she had understood intellectually and had not understood in any other way until this moment.
The panels responded.
Not passively — not the way a mirror reflected, not the way a lens refracted. They responded, the way a living system responded, the way a plant responded to the specific frequency of light it was adapted to receive. The accumulated trace in each panel — the stored presence, the emotional residue of years of sustained feeling — resonated with the incoming light and released a fraction of itself back into the space. Not the whole. Just a fraction. But the fraction was specific and real and she could feel it in the air of the room the same way she could feel it through the glass when she placed her palm against a panel directly.
The east wing was full of the feeling of people who had been here.
She stood in it and breathed it and thought: *this is what he wanted to amplify. This is what he wanted to extract and transfer. Not just data. Not just light. This.*
"What's the output reading?" she said.
Cassian read the meter without taking his eyes fully off the array. "Forty-two percent of the threshold Rowan identified in the gear modification timing. And rising."
"How fast?"
"At this rate — " He was calculating. "Fourteen days to reach the threshold. Possibly less, if the nightly activation is compounding the stored output."
She looked at the clock. Eleven minutes since midnight. The array was still locked in position, the light still moving through its refined passage, the panels still responding in their slow, complete way.
"He doesn't need to be here to run it," she said. "The modification made it automatic. He set it and it runs every night without him."
"Without anyone," Cassian said.
"Until it reaches threshold. And then—"
"And then it would require a receiver," he said. "Someone with the biological capacity to accept the transfer. Someone whose nervous system is compatible with the accumulated trace." He looked at her. "Someone like you."
The twelve-minute mark.
The light in the east wing had reached its maximum expression — the panels bright, the botanical specimens at full luminescence, the air of the space thick with the specific quality of compressed presence. Eleven minutes and forty-two seconds, and then the array shifted back to its standard position and the moonlight became only moonlight and the panels dimmed and the temperature in the room began its slow return to normal.
She stood in the aftermath and thought about what she had just witnessed.
Not the mechanism — she had understood the mechanism before tonight. What she had not understood, not fully, was the *why* of it. Not Halewick's why — she had understood his motivation from the beginning. The other why. The why that had driven her father to spend years developing the notation system, the botanical protocol, the theoretical framework. The why that had kept Lady Oriane coming to the conservatory every day during the darkest months of her grief. The why that had driven Evelise into the east wing at midnight in a storm.
The system, when it worked as it was intended to work, was not extractive. It was cumulative. It preserved something — the residue of sustained human presence, the trace of attention and feeling in a space — not to be taken out and used but simply to be present, to be part of the texture of the place, to make the space more itself over time.
Halewick had taken that and made it into a resource. A thing to be extracted, concentrated, transferred, used.
The difference between those two things was the difference between a garden and a mine.
"We need the witness," she said. "And we need the Maribel panel timeline. And we need to move in fourteen days."
"Twelve," Cassian said. "I want two days of margin."
"Twelve days," she agreed.
They stood in the east wing in the aftermath of midnight, and the space around them was quieter now but not empty — still carrying the residue of what had just happened, the trace of the activated panels, the warmth that would take hours to fully dissipate.
"He thought I was the key," she said. "He positioned me here because he needed someone with the biological capacity to receive the transfer. But he doesn't understand what my father understood."
"What's that?"
"My father didn't build this system to create a receiver," she said. "He built it to understand the relationship between light and living systems. The capacity — what I have, what he had — it's not a target. It's a form of listening." She looked at the quiescent panels. "And you can't force listening."
Cassian looked at her for a long moment.
"No," he said. "You can't."
They left the east wing and locked the doors and went back through the dark conservatory into the house, and she thought about twelve days and a witness and fourteen years of work that had been turned into something it was never meant to be, and she thought about what it would take to turn it back.
