She found Seraphine in the conservatory on a Thursday morning, between the second and third specimen rows, where Seraphine was doing the final documentation of the cross-pollination outcome — the hybrid protocol had taken, the evidence visible in the new growth emerging from the junction of the two parent specimens, small and precise and undeniably there.
Lady Maribel stood at the entrance to the row and looked at Seraphine working and said, in a voice that was her usual voice but with something different running under it: "I need to speak with you."
Seraphine looked up.
"Not about the work," Maribel said.
Seraphine put down her tools.
They sat on the stone bench at the end of the specimen row — the bench that was technically there for the botanical work, for moments when you needed to sit and look at what you were doing from a slight distance — and Maribel sat with her hands in her lap and her back straight and her face containing the specific quality Seraphine had occasionally observed from her and had never quite been able to categorize until now: the quality of someone who had been a very private person for a very long time and was about to stop.
Not from weakness. From decision.
"About Oriane," Maribel said.
She said the name with the ease of someone who had been saying it privately for thirty years and had not had sufficient occasion to say it aloud. Oriane. Not *Lady Oriane.* Not *Cassian's mother.* The name of a person she had known before they were either of those things.
"My sister," she said, in case Seraphine needed the clarification. Seraphine did not need the clarification but she was glad Maribel said it.
The story came in the way stories came from people who had been carrying them for a long time — not in perfect order, not with the structured coherence of someone who had prepared it, but in the order that things arrived when you finally allowed them to. Maribel told her about the year after Lord Alistair died, about Oriane's grief, which had been the grief of someone who had organized their life around a person and was now required to reorganize it around an absence. About the symptoms that had emerged gradually — the disorientation, the confusion about time, the conversations with people who were not present.
"I believed Halewick when he said it was pathological grief," Maribel said. "He presented it as a recognized condition. He had references, studies, institutional affiliation. He was not a person who seemed to be lying, because he was not lying about the parts I could verify." She looked at her hands. "He said the light therapy would help regulate the neurological symptoms. He said it had been used in similar cases."
"Did he tell you what it involved?" Seraphine asked.
"He described it as passive light exposure. Controlled frequencies, botanical aromatics, a regulated session duration. It sounded — " She paused. "It sounded like something Oriane would have been willing to try. She had always responded to the conservatory. She had always found it calming. He was not wrong about that part."
"He was using the true parts to move the false parts," Seraphine said.
"Yes." The word was flat and final. "I understand that now."
She continued. Oriane's sessions — twice a week, forty minutes each, in the east wing with Halewick present. The improvement that had seemed real in the first month — the calmness, the clearer periods, the moments of genuine presence. The way the improvement had plateaued and then declined. The way the symptoms had worsened, not into the original grief but into something different — something more disconnected, more internally focused, as though Oriane was increasingly absorbed in something interior that no one else could see.
"I asked him about the decline," Maribel said. "He said it was the condition progressing. He said more sessions were needed. I — " She stopped. "I authorized more sessions."
Seraphine was quiet.
"Evelise came to me," Maribel said. "Six weeks before she died. She had been — she had been documenting things. She showed me a portion of what she had found. Not the notebook — she hadn't completed it yet. But the gear modifications, the collection panels, what she understood about the process." A pause. "I asked her to wait. I told her I needed time to speak with Halewick myself, to confront him directly, to give him the opportunity to — "
"To give him the opportunity to explain it in a way that made it acceptable," Seraphine said. Not unkindly. The observation of someone who had recognized a pattern.
Maribel looked at her. "Yes," she said. "That is accurate. I was not ready to believe that I had consented to something that harmed Oriane. I wanted him to give me a reason not to believe it."
"And Evelise agreed to wait."
"She was — patient with me. More patient than she needed to be." A long pause. "She went into the east wing three weeks later, alone, while Cassian was away. I believe she had found evidence she thought would be sufficient and she needed one more piece to make it conclusive."
"The collection logs," Seraphine said. "She needed the collection logs."
"Yes. She told me that was the last piece." Maribel looked at the conservatory's glass ceiling. "I was preparing to go to Halewick that same week. I thought I had time. I was wrong about how much time I had."
The conservatory was very quiet. The hybrid specimen in the second row was doing what it was doing — growing, in the patient way of things that had been given the right conditions, not quickly but steadily.
"He contacted you last week," Seraphine said. "About access to the east wing."
"Yes."
"What did he offer you?"
Maribel was silent for a moment. "He said — he said that the collection includes a record of Oriane's presence that could be accessed. That what had been taken from her was preserved and could be — reexperienced. That he could give me a session with what remained of her." She said this with the particular flatness of a person quoting something that had moved them in a way they are ashamed of having been moved by. "He knew exactly what to offer."
"He always knows exactly what to offer," Seraphine said.
"Yes." A pause. "A part of me wanted to accept. A very specific, very real part of me. The part that has been in this house for three years and has sat with Cassian at dinner and seen what the loss of Oriane did to him and thought — if there is any way, any way at all — "
"That's not weakness," Seraphine said. "That's grief. He's been using grief as a mechanism for years. Yours, Cassian's, his research subjects'. He's very good at identifying what specific form grief takes in a specific person and positioning himself at exactly that point."
Maribel looked at her. Something moved in the older woman's expression — not gratitude, exactly, but the response of someone who has been seen accurately and has found that being seen accurately, even in a difficult thing, was better than not being seen.
"He needs to be stopped," Maribel said.
"Yes."
"I will provide a statement. Whatever you need from me — what I witnessed, what I permitted, what I understood and what I didn't. All of it." She said this with the decisiveness of someone who had been calculating this decision for some time and had reached it. "Even the parts that reflect poorly on me."
"Especially those parts," Seraphine said. "Those are the ones the committee will need."
Maribel nodded. "I know."
They sat for a moment in the conservatory's morning light, the two of them on the stone bench among the specimens, and Seraphine thought about the structure of the case against Halewick and where Maribel's witness statement fit in it, and she thought about the thing Maribel had said about wanting to believe — the part of you that wanted the answer you knew wasn't true to turn out to be true.
"He would have given you a session," Seraphine said. "But it wouldn't have been Oriane. The trace in the panels — it's a residue, not a person. It's the quality of her presence in a moment, stored. It can be felt. But it isn't her. It can't be her."
"I know," Maribel said. And then, after a pause: "I knew. I think I knew and I was choosing not to know."
"That's the most dangerous thing he does," Seraphine said. "He gives you something to choose not to know. Something you want to choose not to know."
She thought of Cassian, standing in the study while she told him his mother had not been sick. She thought of the specific cost of choosing to know the things you have been choosing not to know.
"Cassian needs to hear this from you," she said. "Not from me."
Maribel was quiet for a long moment. "I know," she said finally. "That is why I spoke with you first. I needed — I needed to say it once, before saying it to him." She looked at her hands. "He will be angry. He has the right to be angry."
"He might be," Seraphine said. "And then he might not be. He understands complicated things."
"He understands too much," Maribel said. "He always has. It has always been his particular difficulty."
She stood. She straightened her dress with the habitual gesture Seraphine had seen hundreds of times — the preparation for re-entering the world as the person she presented as.
At the end of the specimen row she stopped. "He contacted me again yesterday," she said. "Halewick. He wants an answer."
"Tell him you need more time," Seraphine said. "A week."
"And in a week?"
"In a week we'll be ready."
Maribel nodded. She left the conservatory with the walk of someone who had put something down that they had been carrying a long time — not light, not unburdened, but different. The specific different of someone who had decided to act.
