The afternoon after Maribel's conversation with Seraphine, Cassian found her in the library and said nothing for a moment — just stood in the doorway with the quality of a man who had been told something and was still in the process of becoming a person who knew it.
She had told him about Maribel's statement. Not everything — she had told him the shape of it, the key facts, the confirmation of what the east wing panel had already suggested. She had told him his aunt had authorized the sessions in good faith. She had told him Maribel was prepared to give a full witness statement.
She had not tried to soften it, because softening it would have been an insult to his ability to hold what was real. She had told him clearly and she had let him be quiet and she had done the work of remaining present through the quiet.
Now, the afternoon after, he appeared in the library doorway and said: "Come for a walk."
She came.
The path to the cliff edge was one she had walked before — the narrow track along the boundary of the Luminara Hall property, where the maintained grounds gave way to the rougher grass that grew right up to the edge of the rock. The sea was below and the sky was above and between them the coast of Elyndor extended in both directions, grey and enormous and beautiful in the particular way of things that were indifferent to human concerns and therefore restful to look at.
Cassian walked without speaking for the first several minutes. She walked beside him and did not require conversation — she had learned his silences by type, and this one was the working silence, the silence of someone with something to say who had not yet arrived at the form it needed.
They reached the place where a natural outcrop provided a level sitting surface, a place she had noticed before for its view and its shelter from the worst of the wind. He sat. She sat. The sea moved below them with its permanent argument.
"Maribel spoke with you," he said.
"Yesterday morning."
"She told me last night." He looked at the sea. "She was — thorough. She didn't excuse herself."
"No."
"I've been angry with her for three years," he said. "Not explicitly. Not consciously. But there has been something — a distance, since my mother died, that I attributed to grief but was also — was also something else. A suspicion I hadn't allowed myself to form into a specific thought." He paused. "I think I knew, on some level, that something was not right about how my mother's condition developed. And I think I knew that Maribel had access to information I didn't. And I was — I chose not to press it. Because pressing it would have required me to face something I wasn't ready to face."
"We all had things we chose not to know," she said.
"Yes." He was quiet for a moment. "She authorized sessions with a man who was conducting unauthorized experiments on her sister. She didn't know the full extent of it. But she chose — at a certain point — to give him the benefit of doubt that the evidence no longer supported."
"She was grieving too," Seraphine said. "People in grief are — permeable to a certain kind of persuasion. They want the version that hurts less. That's not weakness. It's what grief does."
He looked at her. The afternoon light on the cliff was the gold light of late autumn, the specific quality of light that came in low and warm and made everything look more real than usual — not warmer exactly, but more visible, more specific.
"I don't love Evelise," he said.
The words arrived without preamble, which meant they had been building for some time and had simply reached the point at which they needed to be said.
"I know," she said.
"I mean — I didn't love her. When she was alive." He looked back at the sea. "We were suited in practical ways. Our families had a long business association. We understood each other's situations. But there was no — there was nothing there that was real in the way that love is supposed to be real. We both knew it. We were both — proceeding because the arrangement made sense and because neither of us had a reason at the time that seemed sufficient to undo it."
"She knew that too," Seraphine said. "It's in her letter. She describes the engagement as practical."
"Yes." A pause. "She was a good person. Better than most. She saw something wrong and she tried to stop it, and she died trying to stop it, and I carry that. Not as grief, exactly. As — as the weight of someone who did something genuinely brave while I was still choosing not to look." He turned to face her directly. "I carry it because it's mine to carry. But I want you to understand that what I carry is guilt, not loss. And I want you to understand the difference because — "
He stopped.
She looked at him on the cliff in the gold afternoon light — this man who had been explaining himself to her, who had been giving her the specific shape of his interior, who was very carefully not completing that sentence but who had begun it, which was itself a completion of something.
"I know the difference," she said.
His expression changed. Not dramatically — a small change, the specific change of someone who has been understood accurately and is absorbing it.
"You don't seem frightened of this house," he said.
"I'm frightened of a number of things here." She looked out at the sea. "I'm not frightened of you."
The sea moved below them. The gold light moved across the cliff grass. A pair of birds flew past, below them, which meant they were sitting higher than the birds were flying, which gave the moment a particular quality of exposure — visible from all directions, sheltered by nothing except the open air.
"I have something to show you," he said. "Tomorrow. A document — the one about your father that I told you about on the cliff before. I'm ready to show it to you."
"All right," she said.
"It's — it's not easy," he said. "What it contains. It confirms what you already understand, but confirmation is different from knowing in theory."
"Yes," she said. "It is."
They sat for a while longer in the gold light on the cliff, watching the sea, and she thought about her father and about confirmation and about the specific weight of things that were true regardless of whether you looked at them. She thought about Cassian beside her, who had just told her the shape of something interior, who had been doing that slowly and carefully over the course of a month and was now doing it directly.
She thought about the thing that had been building since she arrived — the accumulation of small true things that had been adding to each other in the specific way of things that were becoming something larger and more real than any of them individually.
She did not name it.
But she sat in it, in the gold afternoon light on the cliff edge with the sea below and the house behind and this man beside her who was not her father and was not Elyndor and was not the conservatory but was, somehow, inextricably present in all of her understanding of this place and what it meant — and she let it be what it was, real and unfinished, the way the best things often were.
"Tomorrow," she said.
"Tomorrow," he said.
They stood when the light began to fade and walked back toward the house in the growing dusk, and the sea continued its conversation with the cliffs, and the conservatory's glass panels held the last of the afternoon light in the way they always held things — longer than expected, more faithfully than you'd think possible, giving back warmth even after the source of it had gone.
