The submission package was complete by late afternoon.
Seraphine sat in the documentation room — the space Isolde had prepared, a long table cleared and lit, the materials organized in the order of their submission — and reviewed the full package from beginning to end with the attention she brought to anything that needed to be right the first time. The botanical evidence. The technical documentation. Maribel's statement. The witness testimony from the researcher Cassian had contacted. The photographs of the basement. Evelise's letter and notebook pages, reproduced in authenticated copy.
It was sufficient. It was more than sufficient. She had been building cases from limited evidence for three years — the nursery's financial arguments to its creditors, the advocacy letters for botanical preservation, the careful persuasive documents she had written on behalf of species that no one with institutional power was paying attention to. This was different in scale and consequence but not in kind. The evidence was real. The argument was sound. The documentation was complete.
She was cross-referencing the timeline one last time — the sequence of dates that connected Halewick's unauthorized activities to the specific harms that had resulted — when she noticed the anomaly.
It was small. The kind of thing that would not have mattered in a different document, in a less significant context. A date discrepancy that required only a moment to identify but opened a question she could not close without asking it.
The formal meeting minutes — the document Cassian had given her in the garden — contained an addendum in her father's hand. She had read the addendum. She had been reading the addendum for three days in the background of every other thing she was doing. She knew its content completely.
What she had not closely examined until this moment was the date.
Not the meeting date. The date of the addendum.
The meeting had occurred on a Thursday in late October of the year her father had resigned from the project. The addendum was dated — she looked at it again, closely, in the good light of the documentation room — three weeks later.
Which meant the addendum had been added to the document after the meeting. Her father had gone back to the formal record and added his accounting of his own failure after the fact.
Which meant someone had held the document in the interval — had had access to it while it was still open, while the addendum had not yet been added.
She looked at the document's provenance. Cassian had said he received it three years ago, after her father's death, as part of the estate's research correspondence. But if her father had added the addendum three weeks after the meeting, in the period between the meeting and — she did the arithmetic in her head and arrived at the specific implication that she had been not quite allowing herself to arrive at.
The addendum had been added three weeks after the meeting. Her father had resigned from the project at the meeting. Her father had died — she did the arithmetic again — eight months later.
Cassian could have received the document at any point during those eight months.
She sat with the arithmetic. She sat with it for several minutes, the documentation room quiet around her, the completed submission package waiting on the table.
Then she went to find Cassian.
He was in his study, drafting the cover letter, and he looked up with the expression of someone who had been expecting her to return and had not been certain when.
She sat across from him and placed the meeting minutes on the desk between them.
"The addendum is dated three weeks after the meeting," she said.
He looked at the document.
"My father added it after the fact," she said. "Which means the document was held somewhere between the meeting and the date of the addendum. Someone had it in that interval." She looked at him. "When did you receive this document?"
He was quiet for a moment that was not the calculated pause of someone constructing a response but the stillness of someone who had arrived at something they had known was coming and had been carrying the weight of knowing it was coming.
"I need to check the records," he said.
He went to the filing cabinet that occupied the east wall of his study and retrieved a folder of administrative correspondence. She watched him go through it with a speed that suggested he knew approximately where to look. He returned to the desk and placed a date-stamped receipt in front of her.
The document had been transmitted to Luminara Hall three weeks before her father's death.
She read the date twice.
Three weeks before.
Not after. Before. He had received the document — including the addendum, including her father's explicit statement that he had known about an unauthorized trial and had not reported it, including the implication that Halewick had reason to want her father's silence maintained — three weeks before her father had died in a fire.
She put the date-stamped receipt down carefully.
She looked at it. She looked at the meeting minutes. She looked at the arithmetic that connected one to the other and to a fire in a private laboratory in Mirrowen that had been ruled an accident.
"You had this document," she said. Her voice was level. She was very good at level. "You had this document three weeks before my father died. You read the addendum — you know what it contains — and you saw that my father had documented a specific threat to Halewick's program. And you did not — " She stopped. Started again. "Did you contact my father? Did you warn him?"
The silence that followed was the longest silence she had experienced in this room, and she had experienced several.
"No," he said.
One word. Flat. The honesty of a man who had decided not to obscure.
"Why not?"
He looked at the date-stamped receipt. He looked at the meeting minutes. He looked at the alignment of these two documents that created the specific implication she had just constructed, and she could see in his face that he had made this alignment many times himself, in the three years since, in the particular form of insomnia that comes from a calculation you cannot stop running.
"Because I read the addendum and I told myself the fire at the research laboratory here had been an accident," he said. "I told myself that the addendum documented something administrative — a research ethics failure, not a threat. I told myself your father was safe in Mirrowen, away from the project, away from Halewick. I told myself — " He stopped. Began again, more slowly, with the quality of someone saying something they have been saying to themselves for a long time and are now saying for the first time aloud. "I told myself there was no action required. Because the alternative — that action was required, that I should have reached out to your father, that I should have warned him that this document existed and that it created a specific risk — the alternative required me to accept that what was happening was something I needed to stop rather than something I needed to wait out."
She heard Rowan's voice in her memory: *she's transferring. Make sure you know which feelings belong to which thing.*
She sat with the distinction and found that it was not a clean distinction after all. This was not her grief about her father being redirected onto Cassian. This was about Cassian. This was specific to Cassian. This was the thing she had been working toward without knowing it, the question that the document had been building toward since she first received it in the garden.
"You chose not to know," she said.
His jaw was set. "Yes."
"You chose not to know and my father died."
He did not defend this. He received it with the same quality she had seen from him in the worst moments of the past month — the stillness of someone accepting a weight rather than deflecting it.
"I've been living with that calculation for three years," he said. "I have never found a way to make it come out differently. I've tried."
She looked at him across the desk. She thought about the word *trying* and what it cost and what it didn't change and whether cost and change were the relevant currencies.
"I need to go outside," she said.
She left the study and went into the garden, and the cold air of the Elyndorian coast received her without comment, and she stood in it and looked at the grey sky and tried to figure out which of the things she was feeling were which and found that they were, for the moment, too entangled to separate.
She would sort them. She always sorted them. But not tonight.
Behind her, through the study window she could not see but could feel, she knew Cassian was sitting with his calculation in the room where he kept his records and his guilt and his long, patient grief, and she thought about all the ways people chose not to know things and all the ways that choice eventually cost someone something.
She stood in the cold until she could breathe normally.
Then she went inside.
