She did not go to him that night.
She went to her room and sat at her writing desk and did not write in her notebook and did not read and did not sleep until very late, and when she slept she woke twice from dreams she did not remember but that left her with the specific physical heaviness of dreams that had required something.
In the morning she did the work. The submission needed to go out and it was going out today and the personal circumstances of the people submitting it were not a variable in the timeline. She went to the documentation room and completed the final checks and handed the compiled package to Cassian, who had engaged a courier through a solicitor in Mirrowen — someone independent, someone with no connection to Luminara Hall or to any party in the case. The submission was sent at ten in the morning.
Rowan made tea and they sat in the kitchen and did not say very much, which was correct.
At midday Seraphine went to the conservatory.
She had not been to the conservatory that morning — the first morning since her arrival that she had not been in the conservatory before nine. The space received her with its usual quality: the light, the warmth, the specimens, the specific compound note that she had been breathing for more than a month and had become as familiar as the nursery's smell, as her own hands.
She stood in the middle of the central path and looked at the hybrid specimen.
It was fully open now. The flower her father's protocol had specified, realized in the specific conditions she had prepared, in the conservatory he had worked in and the soil she had tended. It was exactly what the protocol had promised. It was genuinely beautiful, in the modest specific way of botanical achievement rather than the showy way of decorative horticulture — a flower that was beautiful because it was correct, because it was what it was supposed to be, because everything had been done right.
She heard him come in.
He did not say anything immediately. He stood at the entrance to the central path and she stood at the other end, with the specimen between them, and the conservatory held them both in its usual patient way.
"Say what you need to say," he said.
She turned to face him.
He was standing with his weight even, his hands at his sides, his face open in the specific way she had come to recognize as him being deliberately unguarded — the conscious effort of removing the glass, of standing in front of something without the protection of his management. He had decided to receive this without deflection.
She said it clearly.
"You lied to me about when you received the document."
"I told you I received it after your father's death."
"You allowed me to understand that. You knew the implication and you allowed me to receive the wrong implication without correcting it."
"Yes."
"And you held the document for three years knowing that it contained evidence that my father was at risk, and you did not contact him, and you did not warn him, and you did not act on the information the document contained." She kept her voice even. Even was the voice she used when something was serious, when she needed the words to land clearly and not be obscured by the emotion that was also present. "And then my father died in a fire. And then you brought me here. His daughter. To do his work. Knowing all of that."
"Yes," he said. "All of that is true."
"Was bringing me here — " She stopped. The question had more than one version and she needed to ask the right one. "When you invited me here. What did you want?"
"To finish what the research had started," he said. "To restore the conservatory. To — " He stopped. "To be in proximity to someone who understood what this place was. Who would look at it with the quality of attention it deserved. Who would — " He stopped again.
"Who would bring something you needed."
"Yes."
"And the fact that I was his daughter. That I had been left without him. That I had been living for three years with an incomplete version of what had happened and why. Was that — convenient? Was that part of what made me the right choice?"
He looked at her with the expression of a man who had been asked a question he had been asking himself and had not fully answered.
"I don't know," he said. "I have asked myself that question. I don't know how to separate the answer I can give from the answer I might give if I were more honest than I've been able to be."
This was, she thought, the most honest thing he could have said. It would have been easier to say no. It would have been easier to say his motives had been simple and good. The fact that he had not said these things was information.
"I trusted you," she said. Not loudly. Not as an accusation — as a statement of fact that had consequences. "I came here and I did the work and I trusted you more than I've trusted anyone in three years. And part of the basis of that trust was my belief that you had been honest with me about the things that mattered most."
"I have been," he said. "Within the constraint of what I could manage. Which was not sufficient. I know it was not sufficient."
"Within the constraint of what you could manage," she repeated. "That is the problem. The constraint is yours. The harm is not only yours."
He received this without speaking. The conservatory received it too — the specimens in their rows, the colored light from the glass panels, the hybrid flower between them, fully open, real.
"I can't decide this tonight," she said. "Whether what you did — whether the gap between what you knew and what you told me — whether that is something I can — " She did not finish the sentence because she did not know its ending.
"I know," he said.
"I need time."
"Yes."
She looked at him for a long moment in the conservatory light. She thought about Rowan's observation: *real things are worth the difficulty.* She thought about the two separate problems and whether she had been keeping them separate or had allowed them to merge. She thought about her father's addendum — the accounting of his own failure, the specific honesty of a man who had decided that records mattered even when they did not reflect well on the person making them.
She thought about whether she was doing what her father had failed to do — looking at something clearly, even when it was harder than not looking.
She was trying. She did not know yet if she was succeeding.
"Tomorrow is the activation," she said.
"Yes."
"I'll be there for that."
"I know."
She left the conservatory and went to her room and sat at the desk where her two-column notebook page was still open, the left side written and the right side waiting, and she picked up her pen.
She wrote on the right side for a long time.
Not conclusions. Not resolutions. Just what was true, as clearly and specifically as she could write it, the way her father had written his addendum — the honest accounting of where she was, including the parts that did not reflect well on how certain she had been, how much she had given, how frightened she was of what she had allowed herself to want.
