He was perhaps fifty meters from the crater rim when GAIA's voice broke the silence with a different tone than its usual flat delivery — not alarm, exactly, but something closer to genuine anomaly flagging.

"Unscheduled sensor event. A weak energy signature has been detected approximately sixty meters south of current position, embedded within the silicate substrate. Composition does not match any cataloged debris from the escape pod or standard planetary geology. Recommend caution."

Arthur stopped walking and looked south, toward a stretch of glass that looked, to his eyes, identical to every other stretch of glass in every direction.

"Define 'does not match,'" he said.

"Insufficient data for full classification. The signature is faint, stable, and non-radioactive. It does not correspond to any known energy source in my database, including residual signatures from the Ancient Conflict era referenced in regional geological strata."

Arthur weighed the thirty milliliters of water in his hand, the failing filter counting down somewhere behind his ribs, the dome waiting unattended four hundred meters back, and the pull of an unexplained anomaly sixty meters in the wrong direction.

"Log the coordinates," he said. "I'll come back for it when I'm not running on borrowed time."

He turned north, back toward the crater, back toward the dome, and did not look toward the anomaly again — though the coordinates sat logged in his HUD for the rest of the walk home, a small, unresolved question mark trailing behind every other, more urgent one.

The walk back felt longer than the walk out, the way return journeys always did when the body had already spent its reserves and the mind knew it. Arthur nodded to no one, filed the number, and began, by the last of the daylight, disassembling a section of the suit's redundant filtration housing to see whether anything salvageable could be repurposed to extend the membrane's life even slightly. It was not a solution. It was a delay. Out here, that was still worth an evening's work.

The stars, when he finally allowed himself to look up again, had shifted their positions imperceptibly against the horizon — a reminder, if he'd needed one, that the planet beneath him was still turning, still keeping its own indifferent schedule regardless of what he did or didn't manage to solve before it. He found that thought oddly steadying rather than bleak. The universe did not require him to succeed. It only required him to keep trying, for as long as trying remained possible, and record what happened either way.
