Chapter 3: First Drop
The first thing Arthur did after securing the previous night's makeshift filter repair was kneel beside the dome and look for the moss.
He'd started calling it that in his own notes, though GAIA's official designation remained a string of taxonomic identifiers — Lichen-01, cross-referenced against a seed bank classification he only half understood. Whatever its proper name, it had, sometime in the night, produced the faintest visible green, a scattering of pinprick growths no larger than grains of sand, clustered along the damper edge of the silicate bed where his rationed water had pooled slightly before soaking in.
He stayed crouched there longer than the observation strictly required, close enough that his breath fogged faintly against the inside of his visor.
"GAIA. Confirm visual."
"Confirmed. Lichen-01 has produced early thalli — first visible growth stage. Biomass Index has increased from 0.1% to 0.3%. This represents measurable, sustained biological expansion, independent of the metabolic trace activity previously logged."
Arthur allowed himself exactly one breath of something like satisfaction before turning his attention to the day's actual problem. Thirty milliliters from a rock hollow, once, was not a strategy. It was an anecdote. What he needed was a system — something that ran every night, without him standing over it, without costing him a four-hour round trip and a torn suit each time.
He ran a hand along the dome's outer seam, checking again for stress fractures from the previous night's temperature swing, and found none. Whatever else remained uncertain, the dome itself had proven more durable than he'd expected from a structure built out of adhesive and scavenged glass. He allowed himself to hope, cautiously, that the same might eventually be said of everything else he was cobbling together out here.
He also noted, with the same detached precision he applied to every other observation, that checking on the moss before checking his own vital signs or the suit's overnight diagnostic readout was, strictly speaking, out of priority order. He corrected the oversight by running both checks immediately afterward — suit integrity nominal, no new damage overnight, hydration slightly below optimal but within tolerance — and did not examine too closely why the moss had come first.
He spent the morning inventorying every reflective or metallic scrap salvaged from the escape pod, laying them out on a flattened section of glass like a surgeon arranging instruments. Most of it was structural — hull plating, seat framing, the housing from instruments too damaged to repair. But two pieces caught his attention: a curved panel from the pod's exterior skin, polished to a dull mirror finish on its inner face, and a length of thin, flexible film that had once lined the craft's thermal insulation, reflective on one side.
The principle was simple enough, and he'd used variations of it before, on Earth, in far gentler conditions. A radiative cooling surface — angled to face the night sky, shielded from residual ground heat — would lose thermal energy fast enough, in a world with air this dry and nights this cold, to drop below the local dew point and pull moisture directly out of whatever humidity existed in the atmosphere. It wasn't much. Glass Wastes air held next to nothing in the way of water vapor. But next to nothing, collected patiently and repeatedly, was still more than the nothing he currently had.
He built the frame first — a shallow angled trough from salvaged hull plating, tilted at roughly thirty degrees, lined with the polished panel to maximize the radiative surface. He ran a groove along the lowest edge to channel any condensation toward a collection point, mirroring the design instinct that had served him at the rock hollow, then paused, frowning at the reflective film in his hands.
The angle mattered more than he'd first assumed. Too shallow, and the surface would face too much of the horizon, picking up residual heat radiating off the surrounding glass long after sunset. Too steep, and it would lose collection area for no thermal benefit. He tested three different mounts before settling on thirty degrees, checking each against a small level improvised from a half-filled vial and a strip of clear polymer — not elegant, but accurate enough for his purposes.
The first attempt to line the trough's underside with the insulating film failed within minutes — the material, salvaged and already stressed by the crash, tore along an old seam the moment he tried to stretch it taut. He swore under his breath, a rare enough occurrence that the sound of his own voice startled him slightly, and set the ruined strip aside.
"GAIA, alternative insulating materials in current inventory."
"No dedicated insulating material remains undamaged. Suggest exploring underside airgap design instead of material substitution — a sealed air layer beneath the collection surface would provide comparable thermal isolation from ground heat without requiring intact insulating film."
An air gap. Arthur turned the idea over, then nodded slowly to himself. He didn't need the film at all if he could simply suspend the trough above the ground on short standoffs, letting a still layer of air do the insulating work air always did, given the chance. It meant more structural fabrication and less material efficiency, but it solved the actual problem rather than working around a shortage of the wrong solution.
He appreciated, in the quiet, private way he appreciated most elegant solutions, that GAIA's suggestion hadn't been to find a substitute material at all, but to question whether the material had ever been necessary in the first place. It was a habit of thought he recognized in himself, usually applied to soil chemistry or resource allocation rather than architecture, and it occurred to him that whoever had built GAIA's reasoning core had trained it on something closer to his own discipline than he'd assumed from its flat, procedural voice.
He spent the remainder of the afternoon on it — cutting standoffs from scrap tubing, testing the trough's stability, adjusting the collection channel's slope by increments too small to matter individually but that, together, would determine whether water pooled usefully or simply evaporated before he could collect it. His hands, already sore from the previous day's digging, protested through most of it. He worked anyway, pausing only when GAIA's power warning could no longer be ignored.
Twice during the afternoon a gust of wind kicked up fine grit that threatened to scratch the trough's polished collection surface, and both times he threw his own body between the wind and the metal without fully deciding to, an instinct that struck him afterward as faintly absurd — the trough was replaceable, in theory, given enough scrap and enough time. He was less certain the same could be said of the hours he'd already invested in getting the angle right, and perhaps that was the actual calculation his body had made faster than his mind could articulate it.
"Battery reserve at twenty-two percent," the unit reported, midafternoon. "Recommend limiting non-essential scans to preserve capacity for critical monitoring functions."
Arthur weighed the trade-off with the same care he gave every resource decision. He wanted a full spectral analysis of the trough's collection surface once assembled, to confirm the radiative properties matched his calculations rather than his optimism. That would cost power he might need later for something he couldn't yet anticipate — a medical scan, an unexpected hazard, a genuine emergency GAIA's diagnostic functions could help him survive.
"Hold the scan," he said. "I'll validate empirically instead. If the design fails, I'll know by morning regardless of what a spectral analysis tells me tonight."
It was, he recognized, a decision made partly on data and partly on something closer to instinct — a willingness to trust his own reasoning over instrumentation, which was not a trade he made often or comfortably. He filed the discomfort alongside everything else and kept working.
He was aware, distantly, that the calculation carried a second layer he hadn't stated aloud even to himself: that conserving power tonight meant GAIA's core systems would remain available tomorrow, and the day after, for longer than they would if he spent the reserve chasing a confirmation his own eyes could provide for free by morning. He had, in the space of two days, begun rationing not just water and battery charge but his own certainty — spending it only where the return justified the cost, the same way he'd once budgeted trust.
The wind picked up again in the late afternoon, milder than the gust that had torn his sleeve the previous day, but steady enough to coat every exposed surface in a fine, gritty haze within minutes. He used the lull that followed to run a final integrity check on the trough's mounting, tightening two standoffs that had shifted slightly in the shifting sand, and to clear accumulated dust from the collection channel with the edge of a glove. Small maintenance, the kind that would need repeating daily if the design was going to survive longer than a single cycle. He added it, without complaint, to the growing list of tasks that now constituted his actual life.
By the time the sun began its rapid slide toward the horizon — nights here arrived with almost no warning, the transition from blistering day to killing cold compressed into a window of perhaps forty minutes — the trough stood finished, propped at its angle, collection channel running toward a small sealed vial nestled in a shielded pocket beneath the frame.
He should have slept. His schedule, the one he'd built and enforced on himself with the same discipline he applied to every other resource, called for six hours of rest beginning at full dark, non-negotiable except in active emergencies. Tonight was not, by any strict definition, an emergency.
He stayed awake anyway.
He told himself it was necessary observation — that an unmonitored first trial risked missing some critical failure mode he could otherwise correct before repeating the experiment. That was true, technically. It was also not the whole of it, and he knew that too, sitting with his back against the crater wall, watching a shallow metal trough do absolutely nothing visible in the dark for hour after hour, when he could have been sensibly, efficiently, correctly asleep.
Somewhere in the third hour of watching condensation fail to visibly accumulate on a piece of scavenged hull plating, his mind wandered somewhere warmer than the desert around him.
He remembered a night at the Atacama analog site, years before any of this, when the site's primary irrigation pump had failed at two in the morning during a critical drought-stress trial that couldn't be paused without losing three weeks of data. He and Mira had been the only two awake in the whole compound, flashlights in their teeth, elbow-deep in a housing full of grit and stripped gaskets, swearing at a valve that refused to seat properly. She'd gotten a smear of hydraulic grease across her cheek at some point and hadn't noticed for an hour, and when he'd finally pointed it out, she'd retaliated by wiping her hand across his jaw instead of her own face, and they'd both laughed — genuinely, uselessly, the kind of laughter that had nothing to do with the actual crisis they were meant to be solving — under a sky considerably kinder than the one above him now.
They'd fixed the pump by four. He remembered that less clearly than he remembered the grease on her cheek, and the sound of her laughing at two in the morning over a mechanical failure that, in the moment, had felt like the end of the world and had turned out, like most things, not to be.
He remembered, too, walking back to their shared quarters afterward, both of them filthy and exhausted, and Mira had looped her arm through his without asking, the way she did when she wanted contact but knew he'd overthink a more direct request. He hadn't overthought that one. He had simply let it happen, let her weight lean into his shoulder for the length of a short walk under a sky full of ordinary, familiar stars, and for exactly that duration he had not been thinking about data at all. He sat with that memory longer than he usually permitted himself to sit with any of them. It was, he noted with a kind of clinical surprise, not painful in the way the others had been. It didn't carry the tight, defensive weight of the message he hadn't answered, or the note she'd left on his desk. It simply existed, warm and slightly absurd and entirely hers, a piece of evidence that whatever else had gone wrong between them, there had been something real underneath it — that the capacity to laugh at two in the morning over a broken pump hadn't been a performance, and that some part of him, however deeply buried under logs and schedules and rationed water, was capable of it too.
He wondered, watching a trough that still showed no visible moisture, whether that part of him had actually died, as he'd more or less assumed it had, or whether it had simply gone quiet for lack of anything to answer it. It was not a question he expected to resolve tonight, alone on a planet with no one to test the theory against, but he noted that the question itself had changed — no longer whether he deserved to feel that way again, but whether the capacity remained dormant somewhere, waiting on conditions he hadn't yet provided.
He didn't resolve the question. He rarely resolved any of them. But he let it sit slightly longer, and slightly closer, than he usually allowed, and found that the sky above the Glass Wastes — genuinely spectacular, once he stopped cataloguing it purely as a hazard — was almost bearable to look at while he did.
He must have drifted, at some point past the fourth hour, into something lighter than sleep but heavier than watching, because the shift in ambient light woke him with a start that sent a fresh spike through his ribs. Dawn was breaking, the sky shifting from the deep violet of true night back toward its habitual sick orange.
For a disoriented moment, cold-stiffened and half-convinced he was still in the Atacama compound with a broken pump waiting to be finished, he reached instinctively for a tool bag that wasn't there. The moment passed as quickly as it came, replaced by the familiar, grounding inventory of aches and priorities that told him exactly where and when he actually was. He noted the disorientation without alarm — sleep deprivation, mild, expected given the deliberate breach of his own schedule — and filed it alongside everything else the night had cost him.
He was at the trough before he'd fully finished standing.
The collection vial held perhaps fifteen milliliters — modest, unremarkable by any ordinary measure, and the single most encouraging number he had seen since the crash. Not a rock hollow's one-time yield. A repeatable system, running every night, requiring nothing from him but the discipline to keep emptying and resetting it — and discipline, whatever else the last several years had cost him, remained the one resource he had never once run short of.
"GAIA, confirm."
"Confirmed. Fifteen milliliters collected over an eight-hour cycle, consistent with radiative dew collection under current atmospheric conditions. Extrapolated over thirty days, assuming stable weather patterns and no equipment degradation: approximately four hundred fifty milliliters, supplementing existing reserves. Four hundred fifty milliliters a month from a single trough was not survival on its own. It was, however, the first resource loop he had built on this planet that did not depend on a finite, dwindling supply he'd arrived with. It ran on temperature difference and time, both of which the Glass Wastes provided in essentially unlimited quantity, whether he wanted them or not.
He logged the number, transferred the water with the same careful ritual he'd applied to every drop so far, and allowed himself, for the second time in as many days, a smile no one was present to see.
Four hundred fifty milliliters a month would not, by itself, keep him alive indefinitely. It would not repair a suit, or replace a failing filter, or answer any of the larger questions still stacked unresolved in his logs — the metal fragment logged and left behind two days prior, the unknown scale of whatever catastrophe had glassed an entire world, the eventual, inevitable question of whether anyone was coming for him at all. But it was a system that ran on its own, drawing from a resource the planet would keep providing whether or not he deserved it, and after two days of treating every liter as a countdown, the idea of a number that might, however slowly, start climbing back up instead of down, felt disproportionately, almost embarrassingly, like the best thing that had happened to him in years.
He recorded the final tally for the morning, reset the trough for the coming night's cycle, and turned his attention — with something that, if he'd allowed himself the word, he might have called hope — toward the small dome and the scattering of green now visible without needing to crouch to find it.
The rest of the morning passed in the ordinary rhythm his days had already begun to acquire — feeding the dome's soil a measured trace of moisture, checking the suit's patched seal for signs of strain, recording numbers that meant nothing to anyone but him and, increasingly, felt like they meant everything. It was not the life he had planned. It was, he was beginning to admit, one he could survive inside for longer than forty-eight hours, and possibly, if the trough held and the moss kept spreading, longer than that.
