The notification arrived three days before the deadline.
Liora was at her workstation when it came through — not the soft blue of a wellness communication, not the clinical white of a system directive, but the pale gold that EIDOLON reserved for civic milestone events. The color of things that were supposed to feel celebratory. She had designed none of this color scheme but had absorbed it, over years of working in a system that communicated everything through color, until the pale gold produced in her the same automatic response it produced in most citizens: a small, reflexive lift of anticipation.
She suppressed it before it could fully form and read the message.
*Formal Compatibility Bonding Ceremony: Venn, L. / Voss, I. Scheduled: three days from today, 14:00, Sector 3 Civil Registration Center. Attendance is expected for both parties. This milestone has been optimized for both individuals' long-term wellbeing indices. We look forward to celebrating with you.*
Beside it on her screen, in the case management system: the Orison file, with its forty-hour countdown and its Priority Red border and the authorization code that she had not yet entered.
She looked at both of them for a long moment.
Two different kinds of deadline, arriving in the same hour, sitting on the same screen. EIDOLON's particular talent for simultaneity — the management of multiple lives across multiple timelines, everything coordinated, nothing accidental.
She closed both windows and went back to work.
---
The Sector 3 Civil Registration Center was a building she had passed many times without entering: clean lines, pale stone, the civic architecture that EIDOLON favored for institutions meant to feel permanent and reassuring. Inside, it was warmer than she expected — not in temperature, which was precisely calibrated as always, but in the quality of the lighting, which was slightly softer than the Institute's clinical whites, the color of something that was trying to feel like afternoon sun.
Thirty people were already assembled when she arrived.
She recognized none of them as people she would have chosen to have at a significant moment in her life. She recognized all of them as people who had been assigned to her social network through the optimization process — colleagues of colleagues, neighbors from her residential block, the carefully constructed web of connections that EIDOLON maintained around each citizen to ensure adequate social integration scores. They were pleasant people. Several of them smiled at her when she entered. She smiled back.
Ilyan was at the front of the room, by the registration interface. He turned when she came in, and his expression was — careful. Not strained, not performed. Careful, in the way he had been careful with her for the past two weeks: aware that something was different, choosing to hold that awareness lightly rather than press it.
He looked well. He always looked well. The system had selected him with considerable precision and he exemplified what precision could produce: steady, kind, competent, good. Everything measurable about him was excellent.
She walked toward him.
---
The ceremony was simple by design — EIDOLON's research had determined that elaborate ritual introduced unnecessary complexity into what was, at its core, a data registration event. There was a brief statement of compatibility scores and projected wellbeing outcomes, read by the ceremony official in the calm voice of someone who had read it many times. There was a formal confirmation of intent, entered through the registration interface by both parties. There was a small reception afterward, food and conversation, the social consolidation of the new status.
Liora stood at the interface and looked at the confirmation screen.
*By entering your biometric confirmation, you acknowledge and accept the formal compatibility bonding between yourself and the assigned individual. This registration has been optimized for both parties' wellbeing outcomes. Confirm: Y/N.*
She raised her hand.
And saw Kael in the back of the room.
---
He should not have been there. There was no technical justification for his presence — no assigned social connection to either her or Ilyan, no professional overlap that would have placed him in this building at this hour. He had come anyway, through whatever gap in the surveillance his knowledge of the outer districts had taught him to find, and he was standing near the rear wall in the dark jacket she had seen wet from real rain, watching.
Not with urgency. Not with demand. The way he watched everything: completely, without performing anything, leaving whatever she decided entirely to her.
She looked at him for one second.
Then she looked at the screen in front of her, with its *Confirm: Y/N*, and she thought about what she would be confirming. Not just the bonding — she had been moving away from that for weeks, and both she and Ilyan understood it, and the confirmation would have been a falsehood large enough that the system's own data would eventually surface it. She thought about what *Y* meant in the context of everything she had found in the past three weeks: the apartment, the coat, the papers, the recording, the anchor that grew when threatened, the memory in the service corridor, the forty-three seconds, the real rain.
She thought about choosing.
She lowered her hand.
---
The ceremony official looked at her with the particular expression of someone managing an unexpected deviation from a scheduled event.
Ilyan looked at her too.
His expression was not the expression of a man who was surprised. It was the expression of a man who had been carrying a quiet knowledge for some time and was now watching it become the official version of events. Something in it was painful — genuinely, specifically painful, the pain of a person who had done nothing wrong and for whom the outcome was nonetheless loss. She did not look away from it. He deserved to be seen clearly.
"I'm sorry," she said. Quietly, so only he could hear it. "I'm genuinely sorry."
"I know," he said.
Then he reached across and placed her raised hand gently back at her side — a small gesture, unhurried, the particular gentleness of someone who had decided on a kind of dignity and was maintaining it.
He turned to the ceremony official. "We need a moment," he said. "Please give us a moment."
The official stepped back.
The assembled social network stood in their careful formation, unsure of the appropriate response to an unoptimized outcome.
Ilyan looked at Liora. His eyes were clear. Whatever he was feeling — and she could see that he was feeling it, the real version, not the managed version — he was choosing to feel it clearly rather than let it be suppressed or rerouted.
"Go," he said. Very quietly.
She went.
---
She did not look for Kael in the room. She walked to the exit and through it, into the Sector 3 afternoon, and she stood on the walkway outside the pale stone building and breathed.
The city moved around her in its ordinary way: transit, pedestrians, the managed rhythm of an afternoon. A notification pulsed on her personal display — the ceremony official, almost certainly, beginning the documentation of an incomplete event.
She turned the display off.
She stood in the afternoon and did not perform anything for anyone, and what she felt was not triumph and not relief but something more complicated and more honest: the particular weight of a door that had been closed gently instead of slammed, the specific quiet of a choice that had cost something real.
She thought about Ilyan's hand placing hers at her side. The dignity of it.
She thought: he is going to be all right. Not immediately. But he is the kind of person who becomes all right, because he knows how to feel things clearly and then decide what to do with them. The system didn't give him that. He built it himself, in the conversation at her table and the one before that and the decision he had made in the ceremony room just now.
She thought: that was love. Not the compatibility score. That.
She put her display back on and began walking.
She had forty hours. She had a file to read and a plan to make and a man who was standing somewhere in this city waiting to find out what she had decided.
She had decided.
She walked toward the transit station and the afternoon held her and she did not look back.
