The distance had been accumulating for four days.
She was tracking it the way she tracked most things — not with drama, not with overt acknowledgment, but with the accumulated attention of someone who had been paying close attention to a particular system and had noticed that the system was behaving differently. Thursday had happened. The methodology discussion had been good — the work always remained good, this was one of the things she had come to understand about them — but the register of the space around the work had been off in the way it had been off on Tuesday, and they had not walked home together after, and there had been no text that evening, and she had not texted either.
She was in the Whitmore lab. Marcus was at the far end, working. Aiko was beside her, working. Edinburgh February outside, the light beginning its imperceptible lengthening. She was working on the protein interaction dataset, which was progressing, which would form a significant part of her second-year review, which represented the visible output of the Edinburgh year that was not the paper and not the shared document and not the Thursday discussions and not the specific series of things that had accumulated since September.
She opened the London email. March 15. Twelve days.
She closed it.
She had been opening and closing the London email for five days now, the way you moved a book from one side of a desk to the other without reading it — not avoiding the content exactly, but not yet ready to act on it. The content she knew. UCL, Marchetti lab, three years, Dr. Osei's careful word *simplify.* The decision she did not know. The decision was waiting on something that had not yet arrived.
She thought: the something that has not yet arrived is him.
She thought: and I have not given him the information he would need to arrive.
She thought about what it meant that she was waiting for him to give her something she had not told him about. She was waiting for him to bridge the distance, to re-establish the register, to say the thing that would tell her what she needed to know before she said what she needed to say. And he was presumably doing something equivalent — waiting for her, in his own parallel flat, with his own parallel wound. They were both waiting for the other person to move first. The gap between them was not geography. It was information withheld and silence maintained and two people who had both learned, separately, to wait rather than to ask.
She returned to the dataset.
---
Aiko said: "What's going on?"
Not aggressively. Just: Aiko, taking a break, sitting back from her screen, asking in the direct way that Aiko asked things — without buildup, without management, just the question itself.
She looked up. "Nothing."
"You didn't go to the Henderson lab yesterday," Aiko said.
A beat. She had not gone to the Henderson lab yesterday. She had had reasons — technically true reasons — and she had also not gone because going to the Henderson lab meant sitting at the secondary desk and being in the space that had been, for six weeks, the space where she was most fully herself in Edinburgh, and being in that space with the current quality of things felt like confirmation of something she was not ready to have confirmed.
"I was busy," she said.
Aiko looked at her for a moment with the expression of someone who had heard both the stated and the unstated. Aiko did not push. Aiko returned to her screen.
She sat with the echo of *you didn't go to the Henderson lab yesterday.*
She thought about the pattern of her Henderson lab visits — how they had developed over six weeks from irregular to twice-weekly to the specific Tuesday pattern that had emerged without announcement, how the absence yesterday was the first break in the pattern since the pattern had established itself. Aiko had noticed. Aiko had not been counting, had not been tracking — Aiko was simply someone who paid attention to the people around her, and the pattern had been visible enough that its absence was visible.
She thought: if Aiko noticed, he noticed.
She thought: and he did not text about it.
She thought: which is either because he is also withdrawing, or because he is giving her space, or because he noticed and was uncertain, the same way she was uncertain, and they are now both uncertain in parallel, in separate flats in Edinburgh, not texting, the distance accumulating.
She thought: this is how four years happened last time. Not dramatically. Incrementally. Two people who stopped moving toward each other and started creating just enough space that eventually the space became the whole thing.
She thought about the word *incrementally.* She had not thought about four years ago in these terms before — not as a process, not as an accumulation, but as a decision, a letter, a door. Thinking of it as incremental was different. It meant: this could be something other than a decision. It could be the accumulation of small non-decisions, of texts not sent and visits not made and conversations deferred until the deferral became the answer.
She did not want the deferral to become the answer.
She opened the dataset. She worked.
---
The UCL reminder arrived at eleven.
*Reminder: Application deadline March 15. Your application is incomplete. Please log in to complete your submission.*
She stared at the email. She had not started an application. She had created an account, had looked at the portal, had closed it. The system had sent a reminder anyway, which was the system doing what systems did — tracking the gap between interest and action and attempting to bridge it.
She thought about the gap between interest and action. She thought about London as a research opportunity, which it was, and about London as an exit, which it also was, and about the specific way that these two readings had been sitting in her for a week without her being able to fully separate them. The Marchetti lab was genuinely good. Dr. Osei's recommendation was genuine. If she went to London for the right reasons, she would be building toward something excellent.
She was not currently going to London for the right reasons.
She was thinking about London because *simplify* and because *optics* and because she had watched him frame the Tuesday session slightly differently since Henderson's conversation and because the register of their exchanges had shifted in ways she had been cataloguing without naming. She was thinking about London because the wound said: *if you leave before something costs you, you still have something. If you stay and it costs you, you have nothing.*
She knew this was the wound.
She also could not fully dismiss it, which was the specific difficulty of a wound with partial grounding — it used real information, real pattern, real things she had observed, and translated them into a conclusion that bypassed the actual person.
She closed the reminder.
---
His text arrived at three in the afternoon: *Paper corrections. Section 3.4 has a question from the examiner. Can I send it to you?*
She looked at the text.
This was the kind of text they had exchanged dozens of times — professional, practical, the ongoing collaboration that existed regardless of everything else. She appreciated this. She appreciated that the work continued. She appreciated that he was asking, which meant he still trusted her assessment of the methodology, which was not nothing.
She also read the text and felt: professional.
Not warm. Not *Yutong* at the beginning. Not the specific register she had come to know as his when he was talking to her rather than talking about a problem. Just: a question about a corrections issue, sent to the person who could best answer it.
*Of course. Send it,* she typed.
He sent the section. She read it. The examiner's question was about the boundary condition treatment — whether the pre-September stability framework adequately justified the dynamic directionality revision or whether the revision introduced assumptions that required additional support. She knew this question. She had been expecting this question since October. She drafted a response.
They exchanged four messages. Each one was accurate. Each one contributed to what was needed. The conversation concluded when the corrections question was resolved.
She looked at the thread when it was done.
*Of course. Send it.* / *[Section 3.4]* / *The examiner is asking about X. The answer is Y because Z.* / *That's clear. I'll incorporate it.* / *Good.* / *Thank you.*
Functional. Complete. The work done. Not a single word that was not about the work.
She thought: we have had hundreds of conversations that were entirely about the work, and those conversations were the foundation of everything else. The work was where they started. The work was how they built the vocabulary. The work was real and important and she did not want to diminish it.
She also thought: this is not how we talk anymore. Or it was not, until this week.
She thought about the shared document — about *Not about the methodology paper* and about *Tuesday. The café* and about *See you next Thursday* and about *See you then.* About the evolution from entirely professional to second-channel to direct. The direction had been outward, toward more. The current direction was inward, toward less.
She sat with this. She did not like it.
She did not text him about it.
---
At seven she walked home.
Edinburgh February, the day's last light just beginning to arrive at a quality different from January's last light, the incremental change that was not yet spring but was the approach of spring. She had been in Edinburgh long enough to know this change. She had been in Edinburgh long enough to have an opinion about Edinburgh weather that was not *it rains* but something more specific, the way you developed opinions about a place when you had been in it through its seasons.
She had four years left. She had planned to spend them here.
She reached Marchmont. She made tea. She sat at the desk.
She thought about the pattern of the last week — the Tuesday session, the slightly off register, the *before September* framing that she had offered and had watched land in him with some displacement she could not name, the Thursday that was good work and not much else, the corrections exchange that afternoon. She thought about the accumulation of these things and about what they added up to.
She thought: I am doing the thing I said I wouldn't do. I am creating distance and then reading the distance as evidence that he is also creating distance, and using that reading to justify creating more distance, and the circuit is closed and both of us are inside it.
She thought: the person who has the information that could break the circuit is me. I have London. He doesn't. The asymmetry is mine to address.
She thought: I know this.
She opened her laptop. She opened the London portal. March 15. Required materials. The research statement would take two days. She could have a complete application in ten days.
She thought about submitting an application. She thought about submitting an application and not telling him, and what that would mean, and what would happen when the deadline passed, and what would happen if she were offered a position. She thought about the version of herself who had arrived in Edinburgh in September building reference points quickly and not needing them to be permanent, and about the version she was now, and about the distance between those two versions.
She thought about what Dr. Osei had said: *I'm making sure you have the full picture.* And she thought about how she was not giving him the full picture. She had received information that concerned him — that directly affected the situation they were both in — and had held it for ten days, and the holding had produced exactly this: the circuit closing, the distance accumulating, two people waiting.
She closed the portal.
She had not applied. She also had not not-applied. She was sitting in the same place she had been sitting for a week — knowing what she should do and not doing it, the wound's mechanism operating exactly as she had named it to him: delay, and the gap between knowing and saying, and the reasons she told herself for why it wasn't time yet.
Her phone lit up at nine: *Corrections look good. Section 3.4 answer is solid.*
She had sent it after his text, after thinking through the examiner's question with the part of her that was always accurate about methodology. It was good work. She had been right about the correction.
He replied: *Thank you.*
She looked at the two words.
*Thank you.* Not *thank you, Yutong.* Not *I'll see you Tuesday.* Not the specific warmth that she had been cataloguing since October and that she had no single catalog entry for but that was present in the way he said things to her — the register that said *I am talking to you specifically, not to the person who can best answer a methodology question.* Just *thank you.* Clean, efficient, complete.
She sat with the two words for a long time.
She thought about *I've been waiting for that for a long time* and about *so do I* and about *relationship* said at seven in the evening in the Henderson lab, and about *thank you* being the closing line of their last exchange.
She thought: this is not who we are. This is who we become when both wounds are active at the same time and neither person says the real thing.
She thought: I have to say the real thing. I have to say it tomorrow. Not because I'm ready — she was not sure she was fully ready — but because tomorrow is ten days before the deadline and the deadline is real and he deserves to know that it exists and what it represents and why I have been sitting with it for ten days without saying anything.
She opened the London portal. Looked at it. March 15.
She closed the laptop.
She lay down and looked at the ceiling and listened to Edinburgh February outside the window and thought: tomorrow I will say something. Tomorrow, regardless of what I think he will say or whether the wound tells me it's not time, I will tell him about London.
She thought this and knew she would have to hold herself to it. The wound's mechanism was delay. The counter to delay was a specific commitment, made to oneself, with a specific time attached.
Tomorrow.
