Henderson's message arrived at eight forty-seven: *Can you come by this morning? Nine-thirty if possible.*
Not unusual. Henderson occasionally requested impromptu meetings — on corrections progress, on viva preparation, on the postdoc research plan. Sicheng replied *Yes, I'll be there* and spent the forty minutes between the message and the meeting reviewing the corrections section he had been working on, the question from the external examiner about section 3.4, the boundary condition argument he had been refining.
He had been working steadily since seven. The viva preparation was going well — better, he thought, than it had been before the Henderson conversation in February, before the wound had been named and he had begun the specific work of not letting it speak for him. He was clearer about the thesis now. Not more confident exactly, but more settled, the way you felt settled about something you had made honestly rather than something you had performed. The thesis was what it was. He had built it. She had helped him build it. The viva would be what it would be.
He walked to Henderson's office at nine twenty-eight.
Henderson had papers on his desk — one of them, Sicheng noticed, was a printed copy of the methodology collaboration paper. Not the thesis. The paper. The journal version, in the typeface of the submission proof.
"Sit down," Henderson said. "Thank you for coming in."
He sat.
Henderson looked at the paper on his desk for a moment before looking at him. "The journal has requested additional methodology clarification," he said. "The editor received a query from a member of the editorial board — someone familiar with both labs, who raised a question about the independence of the dynamic directionality contribution."
He looked at Henderson.
"Standard procedure," Henderson said. "Not an accusation. The editor wants a written response from you — as the thesis author who incorporated the methodology — about the independence of the contribution from the collaboration."
He understood what this meant. Someone in the academic network had assembled enough of the picture to ask the question. The question had been routed through the editorial process, which meant it was now a formal thing, a thing that required a formal answer, a thing that would sit in the paper's editorial file alongside the submission and the reviews and the revisions.
"Who raised the question?" he said.
Henderson considered whether to say. "I don't think the source is the important thing," he said.
He thought: Hartley.
He did not say this. He looked at Henderson and waited for the rest.
---
Henderson's explanation continued. The editorial board member had noted that the collaboration paper listed both a Henderson lab researcher and a Whitmore lab student, and had asked whether the paper's description of the collaboration as *professional collaboration* was accurate and complete given what the board member understood about the working relationship. The editor had forwarded the query to Henderson as the supervising professor. Henderson had held it for three days before deciding to bring Sicheng in.
"I want to be upfront with you," Henderson said. "This is the kind of question that will follow the paper. The paper is drawing attention — which is good, because it's good work — and attention means questions. I think you should consider whether the paper's current description of the collaboration relationship needs to be more explicit."
He was looking at Henderson and listening and, underneath both of those things, tracking what was happening in his chest: the specific activation of the wound, the old language arriving alongside the new situation. *This is what happens when you let it matter.* He recognized it. He let it be there. He did not let it speak for him yet.
"What do you mean by more explicit?" he said.
Henderson chose words carefully. "The paper describes the collaboration as professional. That's accurate, as far as it goes. The question is whether the description should also acknowledge — or explicitly not acknowledge — the broader context. Whether the current framing creates an ambiguity that the editorial board member is flagging."
"The current framing is accurate," he said. "The collaboration was professional. The dynamic directionality revision emerged from methodology discussions between two researchers. That's what the paper says, because that's what happened."
"Yes," Henderson said. "And the question being raised is whether 'professional collaboration' is still the accurate description in light of — the rest."
---
The rest.
He sat with that phrase. *The rest* was the shorthand for the thing Henderson knew but was navigating around — the relationship, the personal history that had run alongside the professional collaboration, the thing he had disclosed to Henderson in February and that Henderson had received with the careful concern he had received it with.
He thought: Henderson is trying to protect me. He is trying to protect the paper and the thesis and the postdoc by suggesting that I create, in the public record, a version of the collaboration that separates the work from the relationship.
He thought: this is what it looks like when someone with professional authority tells you that the correct thing to do is to create distance. This is what the word *optics* produces when it is in operation. This is the logic that says: make the record clean, and clean means separated, and separated means she is the methodology collaborator and not the person I said *relationship* to at seven in the evening in a lab in January.
"Let me make sure I understand," he said. "You're suggesting I revise the paper's description of the collaboration to — what, exactly?"
Henderson considered. "To make clear that the professional collaboration and any personal relationship are separate things. That the contribution stands independently of any personal context."
He looked at Henderson.
"Are you asking me to make the paper look like she had less involvement than she did?" he said.
"I'm asking you to consider how the paper positions the collaboration."
He thought about the paper. He thought about the conclusion they had argued about for forty minutes — *emerge* versus *arise,* the verb that meant *we are part of the process.* He thought about the boundary conditions section that was better because she had challenged it. He thought about the hybrid voice that was neither of theirs specifically but both of theirs together. He thought about *Song Yutong, Lam Sicheng* at the top of the page and about what those names meant on that document.
He thought: I have been in this situation before. I have been in this situation and I have made the wrong choice, and I am not going to make it again.
"Her contribution is what made the paper significant," he said. "The dynamic directionality revision is hers. If I revise the paper to create the appearance that the personal relationship didn't exist, I'm not clarifying the record. I'm creating a misleading version of it."
Henderson was quiet.
"I'm not suggesting you misrepresent the work," he said. "I'm suggesting you think about the optics of how the personal relationship affects the interpretation of the professional contribution."
---
He heard the word *optics* and recognized what it was doing.
He had heard this word before, in this office, and had felt the wound activate and had gone to the Whitmore lab and she had said *the wound knows that too, it just takes longer to catch up.* He had done that work. He had named the wound, had identified it operating, had chosen not to let it speak for him. He had thought he had made progress.
He was now sitting in Henderson's office again, with the word *optics* in the air again, and the wound was present again with the same urgency and the same language: *this is what it costs. This is the price. The correct thing is to protect the work by creating distance.*
He sat with this for a long moment.
He thought about what he had said to Henderson in February: *I wanted you to know this from me rather than from inference.* He had done that. He had gone to Henderson proactively, had disclosed, had said the real thing rather than managed a version of it. That had been the decision he had made when he decided he was not going to let the wound speak for him.
He thought: the wound is present. The wound is not right.
He thought about the specific difference between the wound being present and the wound being correct. He had spent years not distinguishing between these — had believed, at twenty-four, that the wound's logic was the correct professional logic, that the supervisor's word *distraction* was professional wisdom rather than the wound finding external confirmation. He had spent the past months learning to make the distinction. He was making it now. The wound said: protect the work by protecting yourself. The correct response said: the work does not need protection from her. The work is what it is because of her.
He thought about her. About the specific quality of her contribution — not in the abstract but concretely, in the specific phrases and paragraphs and arguments that were in the paper because she had thought them, challenged them, built them alongside him. About *emerge implies we're part of the process.* About the boundary conditions section that was better because she had pushed back. About the hybrid voice that had no other origin than two people in genuine intellectual friction over months.
He thought about the past week — about the distance that had accumulated, about *thank you* without her name, about the corrections exchange that had been functional and without warmth. He thought about the specific mechanism of what was happening: both of them operating from wounds, both creating distance, neither saying the real thing. He had been letting this continue. He had told himself it was uncertainty. He had been doing what the wound told him to do.
He thought: the paper is what it is because of her. Revising the record to create distance from that is not protecting the work. It's misrepresenting it. And letting the distance continue between us is not giving her space. It's letting the wound run the relationship.
"The collaboration produced the revision," he said. "The revision is the contribution. The personal relationship doesn't change what the work is. It just means two people who were working together were also something else." He paused. "That's not a problem with the paper. That's a fact about the people who wrote it."
Henderson looked at him.
"I'm not going to revise the paper to create distance from her contribution," he said. "The paper is what it is."
Another silence. Longer.
"That's your decision to make," Henderson said.
Not agreement. Not endorsement. Not *I approve* or *I think you're right.* Just: acknowledged. You have made a decision. I have registered it.
He stood. He thanked Henderson. He left the office.
---
The corridor.
He stood in the Ashworth Building's third-floor corridor and thought about what had just happened.
He had been sitting in an office four years ago — not this office, a different city, but the equivalent of this office — when a supervisor had said the word *distraction* and he had heard it and incorporated it into a framework he had already been maintaining, the framework that said *my desire does not have the right to exist alongside my obligation.* He had been twenty-four and he had heard that word and had written an email and had closed a door from the inside.
He had been sitting in Henderson's office just now and Henderson had said *optics* and had asked him to create distance in the public record, and he had said: no. The paper is what it is.
The situations were not identical. Henderson was not his twenty-four-year-old supervisor. The concern was institutional, not personal. The request was about the paper, not about whether the relationship should exist. He had considered the request. He had declined it. He had done something that twenty-four-year-old Sicheng had not known was available: he had looked at the institutional pressure and the professional concern and the word *optics,* and he had said *that's not what I'm going to do.*
He thought: this is what healing looks like. Not the absence of the wound — the wound was present. Not immunity to the old language — the old language had arrived. But: the wound present and not winning. The old language arriving and not being the answer.
He walked back toward the Henderson lab. He thought about the week. About *thank you* without her name. About the absence from the secondary desk. About the corrections exchange that had been entirely functional and entirely without warmth. About *If there's something you need to tell me, I want to know* and *I know* and her not walking through the door he had opened.
He thought: I have been letting the wound create distance and telling myself it was uncertainty. The wound says: wait. Give her space. Don't push. But giving her space is not the same as being present with her. Waiting is not the same as staying.
He thought about four years ago. He had waited. He had been silent. He had given her space by not pursuing. The space had become four years.
He was not going to do that again.
He sat at his desk. He opened his phone.
*Can we talk tonight? Not about corrections. About the other things.*
He sent it. He put the phone down. He returned to the viva preparation. He was not certain what would happen next. He was certain that the silence was going to end today, because he had chosen to end it, and because ending it was the opposite of what the wound would do, and he was learning — imperfectly, incrementally, but learning — to do the opposite of what the wound would do.
He waited for her reply.
He thought about what the reply might be. He had opened the door in a way he had not opened it before — not *if there's something you need to tell me* but *can we talk tonight, not about corrections, about the other things.* He had named the category. He had made explicit that he wanted the conversation that was not about work. He was not certain what she would say. He was not certain what she would bring to the conversation when it happened. He was not certain what the conversation would produce.
He was certain that having it was better than not having it. He was certain that silence was not the same as staying and distance was not the same as giving space, and that the week behind them needed to be ended rather than extended.
He thought about her text from this morning — the one she had sent about the corrections, the one that said the section was solid, the one he had replied to with *thank you,* two words without her name. He had noticed, when he sent it, that it was the wrong register. He had not corrected it. He was correcting it now, in the way he had: by sending a text that was not about corrections, that named the other category, that said: I want to talk about us.
Edinburgh outside the window. February, the lengthening days, the city proceeding with its patient business. He had been in this room, in this building, in this city for four and a half years. He had not always known what staying here cost him and what it gave him. He was beginning to understand both.
