She had her phone face-down on the desk.
This had become a habit over the past week — not dramatic, not deliberate the way deliberate things were deliberate, just the accumulated behavior of someone who had found that fewer notifications made the specific quality of the distance easier to manage. She was not tracking his texts. She was not waiting for his texts. She was working on the protein interaction dataset and making progress, and the progress was real, and the work was good, and she was here.
Aiko was beside her. Marcus was at the far end of the lab. The morning had the quality Edinburgh mornings had in late February — the light arriving earlier than it had been, the particular quality of air that preceded spring without yet being spring, the city beginning to make its long turn toward warmth. She had been in Edinburgh for six months. She would not have been able to name, in September, what Edinburgh late-February felt like. She could name it now. She had learned the city's seasons through her body, through the specific temperature differences and light changes that accumulated into a knowledge you couldn't get from description.
She thought, working: this is what it means to be somewhere long enough. You stop experiencing it as foreign and start experiencing it as home.
She thought: I am doing things right now that are in direct conflict with staying here.
She turned back to the dataset.
She was aware, in the way she was aware of most things, of the London portal tab she had not opened today. March 15. Eight days. She had a draft research statement saved — two pages, written in a burst two days ago, accurate and good and sitting there without having been submitted. She had been carrying the draft the way she had been carrying the London email: present, not acted on, not released.
---
Aiko said: "I need to tell you something."
Not casual. Not the easy register Aiko used for lab-adjacent observations. This was the register Aiko used for things she had been thinking about for a while and had decided needed to be said. She turned.
"There are questions being asked," Aiko said. "About the paper. About you and — about the collaboration."
She looked at Aiko. Aiko held her gaze directly, in the way Aiko held things — not confrontationally, but with the specific steadiness of someone who had decided that being direct was better than being careful.
"Where did you hear this?" she said.
"Marcus heard it from someone in the Henderson lab," Aiko said. "Someone mentioned it to him — not as an accusation, just conversation. But it's circulating. The question about whether the collaboration was — appropriate." A pause. "Your name is in the question."
She was quiet.
She had known this was coming. She had known it since *among others* in the Henderson conversation, since Dr. Osei's careful *simplify,* since the editorial board query that she had not directly heard about but had inferred from the escalating caution of the past weeks. She had known the circles were tightening. She had known her name would be in the questions.
Hearing it confirmed from outside the institutional chain — not from him, not from Dr. Osei, but from Aiko who had heard it from Marcus who had heard it from someone — was different. It was the thing becoming fully visible. It was the thing that had existed in professional corridors and institutional channels and careful conversations arriving, finally, in the ordinary lab where she worked, through the ordinary mechanism of colleagues talking, the way information traveled in buildings where people spent long days together.
"How long have you known?" she said.
"Last week," Aiko said. "I wasn't sure whether to say anything. But — " a pause " — I thought you should know."
"Thank you," she said.
Aiko looked at her for a moment with the expression of someone who had done the thing they needed to do and was not certain it had been right. Then Aiko returned to her screen. She sat facing hers without seeing it.
---
She thought: *he knows.*
He had told her about *among others* after the Henderson conversation. He had told her about *optics.* He had been carrying the professional pressure and the wound activation and the corrections timeline and the viva preparation and all of it simultaneously, and she had been carrying London and had not told him, and the distance between them had accumulated to the specific quality it had now — functional professionally, absent personally — because both of them had been withholding and neither had broken the circuit.
She thought: he is navigating all of this. The journal query, the questions circulating, Henderson's concern. And I am adding to his navigation burden by being the thing the questions are about and not being transparent about what I know.
She thought about the twelve days. She thought about the specific mechanism of what she had been doing: opening the London portal and closing it, drafting a research statement and not submitting it, telling herself the time wasn't right, telling herself she needed to think, telling herself she would do it tomorrow. The wound's mechanism was delay. She had been operating the wound's mechanism for twelve days while he had been carrying everything else.
She thought: Dr. Osei said *simplify.* The questions being asked by the editorial board, circulating through Henderson lab, reaching Aiko through Marcus — they have a source. The source is the relationship. The relationship exists because she is here. If she were not here — not Edinburgh, not Ashworth Building, not Whitmore lab — the questions would be about a paper from a professional collaboration and there would be nothing to ask about.
She knew this was the wound's logic. She knew it used real information. She also could not make it stop feeling correct.
She opened her laptop. She opened the London portal.
---
March 15. Eight days.
The draft research statement was there: two pages, her work, accurate and strong. The Marchetti lab. UCL. Three years of postdoc in a lab that was genuinely good, in a city that was not Edinburgh, building something that was professionally excellent and personally clean.
She thought about *clean.*
She thought about what clean meant in this context. Not morally clean — the relationship wasn't immoral, the work wasn't compromised, nothing had been done that required cleaning. Clean in the sense of uncomplicated. In the sense of: a situation that did not require everyone in it to manage institutional questions and editorial board queries and questions circulating through lab networks via Marcus. Clean in the sense of: the paper standing as a paper without a question attached to it that had to do with the people who wrote it.
She thought about what it would mean for things to be clean. For the questions circulating through Henderson lab to no longer have an object. For the editorial board query to be a query about a methodology paper from a straightforward professional collaboration between two labs. For *among others* to lose its referent. For the specific quality of his professional situation — the viva approaching, the postdoc starting, the corrections almost done — to exist without the complication that she represented in it.
She thought: this is something I can do for him. He doesn't have to ask. He doesn't have to know I thought about it. I can simplify this by leaving, and the simplification will be real, and he will have the viva and the postdoc and the two years in Edinburgh without the questions following him.
She thought: I know this is wound logic.
She thought: I know he didn't ask for this.
She thought: I know that what he has been asking for — in his way, with *if there's something you need to tell me* and with his absence of texting and his *thank you* without her name — is for her to bridge the distance. Not to leave. To say the real thing.
She thought all of this. She began writing.
---
The draft research statement took forty minutes to finalize. It was good work. She wrote about the protein interaction dataset, about the network dynamics methodology she had developed at Edinburgh, about the ways the Marchetti lab's approach would extend her research direction in ways she had been thinking about for two years. She wrote accurately. She wrote well.
She was writing the document that would send her to London. She knew this. She wrote it anyway.
She thought, as she wrote, about the specific quality of the writing — how it was professional and true and represented her actual research interests and would be read by a committee that had no knowledge of anything except the research. The research statement was not a lie. It was a selection: here is the part of my work, and here is the direction it could go, and here is why this lab. Everything in it was accurate. Everything in it was also missing the context that would change its meaning entirely.
At one point she stopped and looked at what she was doing — at the application portal, at the research statement, at the *submit by March 15* banner at the top of the screen — and thought about him saying *I was closing a door from the inside because I had decided I didn't deserve to have it open.*
She was writing a research statement.
She thought: is there a difference? He closed a door from inside because of a wound that said he didn't deserve the thing on the other side. She was writing a research statement because of a wound that said the thing on the other side would cost him something she could prevent by leaving. Both were choices made alone without telling the actual person. Both bypassed the conversation. Both protected something that the other person hadn't asked to have protected, by removing them from the position of being able to choose.
She saved the draft. She did not submit. She looked at the screen.
She thought: *not yet.*
She thought: there is one thing I have not done. I have not told him. I have been carrying this for twelve days and I have not told him. If I submit this application without telling him, I will have done the same thing he did four years ago, with the same mechanism, for what I will have told myself are different reasons but which have the same structure: protection that the other person didn't ask for, silence that substituted for a conversation.
She thought: I have to tell him first.
She closed the portal. Did not submit.
She picked up her phone.
---
There was a text from him. Timestamped 10:47am. She looked at the clock: 2:47pm. Three hours ago.
*Can we talk tonight? Not about corrections. About the other things.*
She read it.
*Not about corrections. About the other things.*
He had sent this at 10:47am. Three hours ago. While she had been sitting at the secondary desk in the Whitmore lab not looking at her phone, he had sent a text that was the most direct thing he had said to her in two weeks — that named the category, that said I want to talk about us, that opened the door with the name of what was on the other side of it.
And she had spent three hours writing a London research statement.
She sat with that.
She thought about the shared document — about *Not about the methodology paper,* which had been the first thing he ever said to her sideways, the beginning of the second channel. She thought about how far they had come from that entry to *relationship* at seven in the evening. She thought about the specific quality of *not about corrections, about the other things* as a thing said directly, without indirection, the way they had both been learning to say things.
He had said it first. Three hours ago. While she was writing a research statement.
She thought: I told him once that the wound knows too, it just takes longer to catch up with what you know. She had said that to him in the Whitmore lab when he came to her after the Henderson conversation and was carrying the weight of *optics* and she had named the gap between knowing and feeling. She had said: the wound knows. It just takes longer.
She had been right about him. She had not been right about herself.
She thought: the wound is not the same as the knowledge. She had confused them. She had been treating the wound's framing as though it were her complete understanding of the situation — as though *I should leave to protect him* were the same category as *I should tell him about London.* They were not the same category. One was the wound in operation. One was the thing she actually knew.
She actually knew: he had the right to have this conversation. She actually knew: leaving without telling him was the same mechanism as the email four years ago. She actually knew: the distance of the past two weeks was made of exactly this — two people making decisions alone, each operating from their own wound, each bypassing the actual conversation that would give both of them the information they needed.
She had been right about him. She had just taken twelve days to get to being right about herself.
She typed: *Yes. Tonight.*
She sent it. She put her phone down.
She looked at her laptop. The London research statement was saved but not submitted. Eight days until the deadline. She had not submitted. She had not deleted.
She looked at Edinburgh through the Whitmore lab window — the February light, the familiar stone, the city she had been building herself into for six months. She thought about what *tonight* would contain and what she would say and how he would receive it and about the specific quality of not knowing the answer to any of those questions, which was the specific quality she had been trying to avoid for twelve days by not having the conversation.
She had been wrong to avoid it. She knew that now.
She stood up. She closed her laptop. She put on her coat.
Tonight. Everything. The real thing.
