She left at seven forty-two.
He knew this because he looked at his watch after the door closed and the corridor had been quiet for a moment and it was seven forty-two. He stood at the window for a while — Edinburgh outside, the dark and the streetlamps and the wet stone, the city doing its patient February thing — and held everything that had been in the room in the twenty-seven minutes between her arrival and her departure.
She had said: *I thought I was the complication, and that removing the complication would be something I could do for you.*
She had said: *I know that's wound logic.*
She had said: *I haven't submitted it.*
He had said: *I don't want you to go.*
He had said: *I need to think.*
He stood at the window and thought about the shape of what had happened in those twenty-seven minutes. He had come to the room with the Henderson conversation — with *the paper is what it is* and with having said it to Henderson's face, with the wound present and not winning. He had told her about it first. He had wanted her to know before anything else that the wound had been there and had not spoken for him.
She had come to the room with twelve days.
He thought about *twelve days.* He turned the number over. Twelve days she had been carrying London and not saying it, in the same two weeks that he had been carrying distance and not saying it, in the same two weeks that *thank you* without her name had become the register of their texts and Tuesday had become slightly off and neither of them had named the thing that was slightly off. Two people operating from wounds. Two people creating distance and telling themselves it was something other than what it was.
He thought about the structure of it — the specific symmetry. She had withheld London because the wound said: *protect him by removing yourself, silence until you have a decision.* He had withheld direct conversation because the wound said: *wait, give her space, don't push, the distance is not your fault.* Both silences had been about the other person. Both had bypassed the other person. Both had produced the same two weeks of functional professional exchanges and *thank you* without warmth and Aiko noticing the absence.
He sat at his desk. He did not open the viva preparation materials.
---
He went home at nine.
The walk was Edinburgh in February — the incremental lengthening of the days not yet arrived at a visible point, the cold still certain of itself, the city moving through its evening with the specific quality of a city that had been doing this for a long time and would continue doing it. He had walked this route hundreds of times. He walked it now thinking about twelve days and about *wound logic* and about *I haven't submitted it* and about the specific architecture of what she had done and what he had done and what it had produced.
She had done, he thought, what the wound told her to do. For twelve days. She had been right about what the wound told her: *you are the complication, leaving is how you protect him, silence until you have a decision is appropriate.* She had been right that this was the wound's logic. She had named it as the wound's logic in the room. And she had not submitted the application.
He thought about what he had done in the same two weeks. He had received Henderson's word *optics* and had felt the wound activate and had managed not to let it speak for him on the day of the Henderson conversation — had said *the paper is what it is* — and had then come back to the flat and not texted her and had let the distance continue accumulating. He had been giving her space. He had been being uncertain. He had been doing, in his own way, what the wound told him to do, which was: *wait, don't push, the distance is not your fault, you can't know what she's thinking.*
Both of them: operating from wounds. Both creating the specific quality of a silence that was not honest but felt like caution.
He reached his flat. He sat at the desk. He did not text her.
He did not text her not because he was withdrawing but because he had said *I need to think* and he was thinking and he did not yet have the thing he needed to say. The *I don't want you to go* had been true and he had said it. What came after it — the fuller thing, the *and here is what I want to say about London and about the questions and about what I actually think should happen* — he did not yet have that. He was not going to say it until he had it.
He sat at the desk. Edinburgh outside the window. He thought.
He thought about what *I need to think* meant from the outside — from her position, in her flat, with the portal and the deadline and her wound. *People leave.* He had come to understand this wound of hers, had understood it from the twelve days and the draft application and the logic of *removing the complication.* He had not, until just now, fully applied the understanding. She was sitting in her flat with *I need to think* and her wound, and the wound was saying: *this is what it sounds like before someone finds a way to say that leaving is the right thing.* She had said she could wait with the right information. *I need to think* was not information. It was a pause in the direction of information.
He knew this. He was not yet ready. He was still working toward ready.
---
The thinking took the form of: what did she actually say, and what is the wound's interpretation of what she said, and are those two things the same?
She had said: I thought about leaving to protect you.
Wound's interpretation: *she considered leaving. She wrote the draft. She thought about it for twelve days. Even with everything that has happened, leaving was a real option she was computing.*
What she actually said: *I know it's wound logic. I know you didn't ask for that protection. Making that decision without telling you would have been the same structure as the email four years ago.* And: *I haven't submitted it.*
He held these two things. The wound's version and the accurate version. He had spent months learning to distinguish between them — had gotten better at it, had made progress, had been less controlled by the wound's version of events than he had been at twenty-four. He was applying the same work now.
The wound's version said: *she nearly left. You are the complication she was computing.* The accurate version said: *she recognized the wound logic, named it as wound logic, came to tell you before making any decision, and has not submitted.* These were not the same statement. The wound's version used accurate information — she had written the draft, the application existed — and produced a conclusion that bypassed the actual person.
He knew this. He was holding onto it. He thought about the conversation, about her face when she said *I know what that is* about withholding the Dr. Osei conversation — the specific quality of someone owning a failure without flinching. He thought about *I haven't submitted it* said at the door, turning back, the specific form of information offered as a gift, no expectation attached.
He thought: she gave me more than she had to. She did not have to name the wound logic. She did not have to come tonight. She did not have to turn back at the door.
He did not text her.
---
The following day he worked on the viva preparation. The thinking was still happening underneath the work — he had not resolved anything, had not arrived at the thing he wanted to say — but the work was real and needed doing and he could do both. Edinburgh outside, February, the light beginning to shift.
He thought, working, about what the complete thing he wanted to say would contain. He wanted to say something about the London opportunity specifically — not *don't go* as a demand, not *I'd rather you stayed* as a preference, but something more precise about what London represented and what Edinburgh represented and what he thought about the questions being asked and the institutional pressure and what he wanted their situation to be. He wanted to say it with the precision it deserved. He was not yet there.
He also wanted to say something about the future — about the postdoc starting in spring, about the viva, about the two years ahead, about what he envisioned for those two years. He wanted to say it in a way that invited her response rather than assuming it. He had been learning, over six months, that the correct way to communicate important things was to say them as they were rather than managing them into shapes that minimized the response required. He was applying that learning here.
At seven in the evening he called Wei-Lin.
Not text. Call. There was a difference between a text conversation and a voice conversation, and he needed the latter.
"You've been quiet," Wei-Lin said, when she picked up.
"I know."
"Tell me."
He told her. Not everything — not the full six months, which Wei-Lin knew in outline — but the recent weeks: Henderson, the journal query, the paper defense, the conversation last night with *twelve days* and *wound logic* and *I don't want you to go* and *I need to think.* He told it the way he told things: accurately, without editorializing, letting Wei-Lin assemble the picture from the information.
Wei-Lin listened. He had known Wei-Lin for nine years. She listened in a specific way — not performing interest, actually following, the same quality of attention he had come to recognize in Yutong and that he associated with people who took information seriously.
When he finished, Wei-Lin was quiet for a moment.
"She told you she hadn't submitted," Wei-Lin said.
"Yes."
"She came to tell you before making the decision."
"Yes."
A pause. Then: "You were silent last time and it cost four years. You're being silent now. How long is this silence going to be?"
He sat with that.
"I'm thinking," he said.
"I know," Wei-Lin said. "I'm asking how long." A pause. "She said she knew it was wound logic. She said she hasn't submitted. She's waiting for you. You're giving her — what, exactly? Time to doubt whether she was right to wait?"
He sat with *time to doubt whether she was right to wait.*
"She can wait," he said. "She said —"
"She said she could wait with the right information," Wei-Lin said. "You gave her *I need to think.* That's not information. That's a pause. The deadline is when?"
"March 15."
"When is that?"
"Five days."
Wei-Lin did not say anything else. She did not need to.
---
He sat with *five days* after the call ended.
He thought about the email four years ago. He thought about *I need to think* as a silence, as a deferral, as another version of the mechanism that had produced the email. Not the same — the email had been a closing, a decision made alone without the conversation. *I need to think* had followed a conversation. But the silence after had the same structure as the silence before the email: one person waiting for the other, not knowing what was coming, filling the space with whatever the wound told them to fill it with.
He thought about her wound. *People leave.* He had come to understand this — had understood it from the conversation in the Henderson lab, had understood it from the twelve days and the draft application and the logic of *removing the complication.* Her wound said: *people leave, I'd rather leave first, protect yourself by being the one who exits.* And for the past twenty-seven hours — since he had said *I need to think* and she had walked out — she had been in her flat with that wound and a portal open to March 15, waiting.
He thought: I am the person currently determining whether her wound's prediction is correct.
He thought: that is not what I want to be.
He thought about what he had said to Henderson: *the paper is what it is.* He had been ready to say that. He had thought it through. He was ready.
He was not fully ready on the larger thing — was not ready with the full architecture of what he wanted to say about London and about the future and about what he thought should happen. He was still thinking. He would be thinking for a while.
But he could say what he had. He could say the not-yet-complete version. He could say: *I am still thinking, but I want you to know what I am thinking about.* That was not the email. That was not a door closing from the inside. That was: I am here, I am doing the work, here is what I have so far.
He picked up his phone.
He called her.
---
She answered on the second ring.
"Hey," she said. The register was careful — not cold, not distant, just: she did not know what this was yet, and she was not going to fill the space before she knew.
"I'm still thinking," he said. "I want you to know that what I'm thinking about is not whether. It's how."
A silence. He let it exist.
"Not whether," she said.
"Not whether."
He heard her breathing. He thought about her in the Marchmont flat, Edinburgh outside, the portal either open or closed — he didn't know — and the deadline five days away, and herself, waiting with the right information, as she had said.
"The London thing," he said. "The questions. The paper. I have things I want to say about all of it. I'm not ready to say them yet. But I want you to know that *I need to think* is not the same as the email. It's not a door closing."
Another silence. Shorter.
"Okay," she said.
"I wanted you to know," he said. "Before five days became four."
She was quiet for a moment. He waited.
"Thank you for calling," she said.
He put the phone down. He looked at Edinburgh. The February dark, the streetlamps, the city that had been doing this long before he arrived and would continue after.
He was not done thinking. He would need more than tonight. But he had said what he had — *not whether, but how* — and the wound had not spoken for him in this silence either.
He thought: this is what it looks like when you do the thing rather than defer it.
It was not comfortable. It was correct.
He went back to work.
You've reached the end of this chapter
