She woke up with *not whether, but how* in her mind.
This was different from the previous two mornings, which she had woken up with the London portal and the deadline and the accumulating weight of information that was not yet being addressed. *Not whether, but how* was not a weight. It was a direction.
She lay looking at the Marchmont flat ceiling for a while. Edinburgh February outside — the light arriving slightly earlier than it had been, the city beginning its turn toward spring. She had been in Edinburgh for six months and one week. She could feel the season changing in the quality of the morning.
She thought about the phone call. His voice. *I'm still thinking. What I'm thinking about is not whether. It's how.* She had said *okay* because it was accurate and because she had not had anything else ready, and he had said *I wanted you to know before five days became four,* which was: I know what the deadline is, I am accounting for it, I am not leaving you to manage it alone.
She thought: *not whether* contains a full sentence. The sentence is: I have not been thinking about whether. The implication being: whether was never actually the question. The question was always how.
She thought: I should probably know what I think the answer to *how* is before he tells me what he thinks.
She thought about what she already knew. She knew what she wanted — had known it yesterday, sitting in Marchmont after the conversation, watching Edinburgh. She had closed the portal last night and had known. She had said *I'm here* and had meant: here, in Edinburgh, in this, in whatever we build next. She had known.
She got up. She made tea. She sat at the desk.
---
She opened the London portal.
She had been opening and closing it for two weeks. This time she opened it with different intent — not to decide, not to defer, but to look at what was there. The draft research statement: two pages, saved, complete, not submitted. The Marchetti lab details. The UCL department. The deadline counter.
She read the research statement.
She had written it in forty minutes in the Whitmore lab with her phone face-down and Aiko and Marcus present and the wound operating at full volume. She had written it accurately — had not lied, had not fabricated, had drawn on her actual research and her actual thinking about network dynamics methodology and her actual sense of what the Marchetti lab represented as a research environment.
The research statement was accurate. It was also missing the full picture.
It was missing: she had written it because of *simplify,* not because she wanted to go to London. It was missing: she had written it while he was in Henderson's office saying *the paper is what it is.* It was missing: she had been carrying London for twelve days while he had been carrying the distance and the corrections and the institutional questions, and the parallel withholding had produced *thank you* without her name and Aiko noticing the absence and Edinburgh in February feeling, for the first time, wrong.
She read the statement to the end. She closed it.
She sat with the question she had been avoiding for two weeks, in the form she had been avoiding it: *Do I want to go to London?*
Not: *Should I go to London to simplify things?* Not: *Would London be better for him?* Not: *What does the wound tell me to do?* Just: *Do I want to go?*
She sat with this for a long time. She looked at the Edinburgh February morning outside the window. She thought about the Marchetti lab — about its reputation, about the research direction, about what three years of that environment would produce. She thought about these things as things to be evaluated on their own terms.
She thought: if I had received this email in September, before Edinburgh had become what Edinburgh is, I would have applied without hesitation. The Marchetti lab is excellent. The research direction is good. The funding is confirmed.
She thought: I am not in September.
She thought: Do I want to go to London?
The answer was: no.
---
She sat with the answer for a moment to make sure it was true. She tested it the way she tested things she wanted to be sure about: she looked for the version of the answer that would come from the wound and compared it to what she was actually finding.
The wound's answer would be: *no, I don't want to go, but I should go, because going is how I protect him.* The wound's answer contained *should.* It contained a logic about him that bypassed him.
What she was actually finding was simpler: she did not want to go to London. She wanted to be in Edinburgh, in the Whitmore lab, doing the protein interaction dataset, continuing the work that had been going well since September. She wanted to be in Edinburgh because Edinburgh had become — over six months and one week of Thursdays and shared documents and conference rooms and coffee and a Tuesday in January and *relationship* at seven in the evening — the place she intended to be.
She wanted the research direction here. She wanted the relationship here. She wanted Edinburgh.
The London draft had been written by the wound. It was accurate about her research and inaccurate about her wanting. She had known this when she wrote it. She had known it more clearly when she read it just now.
She sat with this for another moment. She thought about the difference between knowing something and being ready to act on the knowing — the gap she had been living in for two weeks, the gap between *I should tell him* and the twelve days it had taken her to actually tell him. She had closed that gap last night by going to the Henderson lab and saying the real thing. She was closing it now by naming, clearly and to herself, what she actually wanted.
She wanted to stay.
She closed the laptop.
She thought about what it meant to want something and know you want it and not yet have it — not because you are waiting for permission but because the thing is in process, moving toward you, and the movement has its own timing. She had wanted to be in Edinburgh and had not known, in September, whether Edinburgh would want her back in the way she was beginning to want it. She knew now. Edinburgh had accumulated around her the way places accumulated when you spent long enough in them: not all at once, but incrementally, until one day you looked up and the city knew your name.
She wanted to stay. That was the answer. Everything else was a question about how.
---
She walked to the Ashworth Building through Edinburgh morning. The air had a different quality from a month ago — still cold, but with something else underneath it, something that was not warmth exactly but was the approach of warmth. She had been walking this route since September. She knew its specific qualities by season now.
She thought about *not whether, but how* and about what *how* might mean — about what questions he was thinking through, about what he wanted to say that he was not yet ready to say. She thought about him in Henderson's office saying *the paper is what it is.* She thought about the call. She thought about *before five days became four* as a form of: I am accounting for the deadline, I know it is real, I am not leaving you to manage it alone.
She thought: I know what I want. I want Edinburgh. I want the work. I want him. These are not competing desires. They are the same desire, arranged differently. She had been treating them as though one of them might need to be sacrificed for the others. That was wound logic. The wound said: want less, protect yourself, make the exit before someone makes it for you. Her wanting was not in competition with itself. It was just wanting, which was what it had always been, which was what she had been trying not to fully acknowledge since the London email arrived.
She had acknowledged it now.
She thought about the parallel she had named to him last night — both of them operating from wounds in the same two weeks. She thought about what it meant that both of them had named it. That the naming had happened in the same room. That they had said *wound logic* and *I know what that is* and *I haven't submitted it* and *I don't want you to go* and *I need to think* and *not whether, but how.* The naming was not the resolution, but it was the precondition of resolution. You could not address something you had not named.
She went to the Whitmore lab. She worked.
---
Aiko and Marcus were there. The day was ordinary — the dataset, the notes, the incremental progress of research in a particular direction. She was good at ordinary days. She had been good at them since September, when Edinburgh had been a place she was building reference points in without needing them to last, and ordinary days had been the texture of the building.
She was still good at ordinary days. She was also, now, someone for whom ordinary days had a different weight — the weight of accumulated context, of twenty-six Thursdays and a shared document with eighty-seven entries and a paper with two names at the top and a Tuesday in January and the specific quality of having been in the same building as someone for six months and having come to know the grammar of them.
At midday an email arrived from UCL: final reminder. Deadline March 15. Four days. Application incomplete.
She read it. She thought: four days. Four days until the portal closes and the question closes with it.
She thought: he has four days too.
She thought: this is not a pressure on him. This is a fact. The fact is real and the conversation needs to happen within it. He said *not whether, but how.* He said he wasn't ready yet. He called to say it. He accounted for the deadline.
She trusted this.
She thought about the word *trust* and what it meant in the specific context. She had spent months learning to trust that he did things he said he would do — had watched him disclose to Henderson proactively rather than reactively, had watched him say *relationship* when she asked what he called it, had watched him cross six feet of lab space on a Tuesday because he simply wanted to. *Not whether, but how* was the same person doing the same thing: accounting for the situation and choosing to do the real thing rather than defer it.
She trusted it. She went back to work.
She thought, working, about what the next few days would look like. He was thinking. She was here. The deadline was in four days. At some point in the next four days he would be ready to say what he wanted to say, and she would receive it, and then both of them would know the full picture and could make decisions from the full picture. That was the sequence. It was not comfortable. It was honest.
She had spent two weeks being afraid that honest would cost her something. She had spent the past twenty-four hours discovering that honest was the only way to have the thing she actually wanted. The two weeks had cost her something too — the distance, the *thank you* without warmth, Aiko noticing, the quality of Edinburgh feeling wrong. Honest cost less. It just felt, in the moment before it was said, like it would cost more.
---
The afternoon passed. Dataset, notes, Edinburgh outside the Whitmore lab windows. At four she made tea and sat with it and thought about the question she had been looking at from different angles all day: what do I want?
She had asked it the way she asked research questions — without predetermined answer, with genuine openness to the evidence. The evidence had been consistent: she did not want London. She wanted Edinburgh. She wanted the work she was doing. She wanted the relationship that had accumulated over six months.
She thought about wounds and their specific mechanism: they took real information and produced conclusions that bypassed the actual person. Her wound had taken *questions being asked, Dr. Osei saying simplify, register shift in their texts* — all real, all accurate — and had concluded *leaving is the answer.* The conclusions were not accurate. They were the wound's translation.
She thought: I have been letting the wound answer questions that have better answers when I answer them.
The better answer was: I want to stay.
Not because staying is the self-sacrificing option, not because staying is what she ought to want, not because the wound's conclusion about leaving is wrong and therefore she should do the opposite. Because she had sat with the question honestly, had tested the answer against the wound's version, had found that what she actually wanted was Edinburgh, and Edinburgh meant staying.
---
She walked home at six. Edinburgh February, the incremental change in the light, the city proceeding. She thought about tomorrow and the next day and the day after that, and about March 15 as a specific date in a specific week, and about what would happen between now and then.
She did not know. She had her answer. He was working toward his.
She reached Marchmont. She made tea. She sat at the desk.
She opened her laptop. She opened the London portal. Deadline: March 15. Four days.
She looked at the research statement. She looked at the deadline. She looked at Edinburgh outside the window.
She thought about *not whether, but how* and about what *how* would require her to say when the conversation happened. She thought about the shared document — about eighty-seven entries and the specific register of what they had built in that document and about what the document represented as a record of two people building something together, in a language that was partly professional and partly not.
She closed the portal. Not submit. Not delete.
She sat for a moment with Edinburgh and with the tea and with the clarity she had arrived at today. She had not submitted. She knew what she wanted. She was waiting for him to say *how,* not because she didn't have her own version of *how* but because he had asked for the time and she had given it and she trusted that the time was being used well.
She picked up her phone.
She typed: *I'm here.*
She sent it. She put the phone down. She looked at Edinburgh.
Two words. Not explanation, not pressure, not question. Just: I'm here, in this city, in this situation, in whatever comes next. The same two words he had sent when he landed in Taipei. *Back.* Both meaning the same thing: I am in the same place as you. Whatever happens next, happens from here.
She sat with Edinburgh and with the tea and waited for what came next.
You've reached the end of this chapter
