The text arrived at eight forty-three in the morning: *I'm here.*
He read it at his desk in the Henderson lab. He had been here since seven, working on viva preparation, or attempting to work on viva preparation — the preparation that kept happening at one level while the thinking about *how* continued happening at another, the two processes running in parallel for three days without fully resolving into each other.
*I'm here.* Two words. The same two he had sent from Taipei airport at five in the morning: *Back.* Both meaning the same thing, in the register they had built over six months: I am in the same place as you. I am not going anywhere. Whatever happens next, I am still here for it to happen to.
He sat with the message for a moment.
He thought: I have been thinking for three days. I know what I want to say. I am not going to say it by text.
He closed his laptop. He put on his coat. He left the Henderson lab.
---
Edinburgh in February moving toward March: the air that was still cold but had something underneath the cold now, something that was the approach of a different season. The light arriving slightly earlier than it had been. The stone still wet from overnight rain but drying at the edges as the morning progressed. He had walked through this city in this season enough times to have opinions about it — to know that late February in Edinburgh meant this quality of air, this quality of light, this specific stage of the city's long annual emergence from winter.
He walked toward Marchmont.
He had never been to her flat. He knew the neighborhood — Marchmont was fifteen minutes from the Ashworth Building, the direction she walked when she left, the general area she had mentioned in the context of *I walked home through Edinburgh rain* and *I looked out the window at Edinburgh and thought.* He had a street address from the department directory. He was walking to it.
He thought about this as he walked — about the specific meaning of going to her flat rather than texting, rather than calling, rather than proposing to meet in the conference room or the café or the Henderson lab. The Henderson lab was his space. The conference room was shared space. The café was their space. The Marchmont flat was hers. He was going to her space, on her ground, because this conversation was not about summoning her to a professional context. It was about arriving.
He thought about what he was going to say. He had been thinking about it for three days. He had it now — not as a speech, not as a prepared thing, but as the full picture of what was true, arranged in the order it needed to be said. He had thought about the difference between *I don't want you to go* as a preference statement and *I want you here* as something more complete. He had thought about what more complete looked like and what it required of him to say.
He reached Marchmont. He found the building. He rang the bell.
---
She answered the door in the way she did most things — with the specific quality of someone who was fully present in the moment and not performing presence. She looked at him. She looked at the fact that he was at her door at nine in the morning without announcement. She registered this.
"I've finished thinking," he said. "Can I come in?"
She stepped back from the door.
He came in.
The flat had the quality of a space that was fully inhabited — the desk by the window with Edinburgh beyond it, the stack of papers beside the laptop, the two cups near the kettle, the specific accumulated character of a space that someone had been living in and working in for six months. He thought about her sitting at that desk with the London portal open, with Edinburgh outside the window, writing a research statement she did not want to write. He thought about *I'm here* sent from that desk last night.
She closed the door. They stood in the small entrance. He looked at her and she looked at him and neither of them performed the beginning of the conversation.
"Sit down?" she said.
They sat — her on the chair by the desk, him on the small sofa that faced the window. Edinburgh outside. The morning light.
---
He had thought about how to begin and had decided: not with preamble. The direct thing.
"I want to tell you what I actually want," he said. "Not *I don't want you to go* as a preference — which is true, but incomplete. What I've been thinking for three days is how to tell you the fuller thing."
She looked at him steadily. She had her listening face — fully attending, not performing attention, the face he had been reading for six months.
"Edinburgh," he said. "The postdoc. The next two years. The paper that's traveling and the viva that's in two weeks and Henderson's concern about optics. All of that is real. I'm not pretending it isn't complicated. But what I've been thinking is: none of it is a reason not to want something."
He paused. He looked at Edinburgh outside the window, then back at her.
"I've spent four and a half years in this city building something. I have four and a half years of thinking that went into the thesis, into the paper, into the argument that the work was worth doing. And in the last six months, some of what I've been building has been — " he stopped, found the accurate word " — alongside you. Not separate from the work. Alongside it. The same way the paper is alongside the thesis. Both real, both in the record, both part of what Edinburgh has been."
She was still. He continued.
"The London opportunity is good. I know that. The Marchetti lab is genuinely good. You would do excellent work there." He held her gaze. "I'm not asking you to turn down something good for me. I want to be clear about that. What I'm asking is different."
---
He thought about the shape of what came next. He had been working toward this for three days, and it was here now, and he was going to say it directly.
"I want you here," he said. "Not because I'm afraid of what it means if you go. Not because I need you to stay to manage some institutional situation. Because what I've been building in Edinburgh, and specifically what I've been building since September — the work, the paper, the Thursday discussions, the things we've argued about and the things we've said and the specific quality of what's been between us — I want to keep building it. With you here."
He paused.
"I spent years not believing I was allowed to want things alongside the work. I told you about that. I named it in the conference room and I named it again in Henderson's office when I said the paper is what it is. What I'm doing now is the same thing I did then: saying the real thing instead of managing a version of it."
He looked at her. The expression — the one without a catalog entry, the one that existed outside all the registers he had spent six months learning. She was looking at him with the full quality of her attention and he was looking back.
"I want you here," he said again. "Because Edinburgh is where I'm building something, and you're part of what I'm building, and I'd rather build it with you present than navigate whatever comes next without you."
He stopped. He had said what he came to say. He did not add to it or qualify it or perform a conclusion. He said it and waited.
---
She was quiet for a moment.
He watched her. He had learned to read her silences — had learned that her silence was not absence but presence, that she was thinking and processing and that the thinking and processing were real and would produce something accurate when they were done.
She said: "I don't want to go to London."
Simply. Without drama.
"I knew that before you came," she said. "I've known it since yesterday morning. Maybe longer." She looked at him. "I was waiting for you to say what you needed to say, not because I needed you to say it before I knew what I wanted — I already knew. But because I wanted you to have said it. Because you deserved to say the full thing."
He sat with this.
"You already knew," he said.
"I already knew," she said. "Because it's what I want. Not because I was waiting for permission."
He thought about this — about the specific quality of two people who had arrived at the same place from different directions, who had each done the work of distinguishing between wound logic and actual wanting, who were now sitting in a Marchmont flat in Edinburgh in late February with the same answer.
He thought: this is what it looks like when two people do the thing honestly.
"I wrote the research statement from the wound," she said. "Not from what I actually wanted. The wound said: leave before you're left, simplify things, protect him by removing yourself. And I named it as wound logic when I told you, and I came home the next day and asked myself the actual question, and the actual answer was — " she paused " — Edinburgh. The work. You."
She said it with the same directness she said everything accurate. Not a declaration performed for effect. A statement of fact that happened to also be a statement of feeling.
He looked at her. She looked at him.
Edinburgh outside the window. The morning light advancing. The city doing its patient thing.
---
He said: "The London deadline is the day after tomorrow."
She said: "I know."
A beat.
She said: "I'm not going to submit."
Not dramatic. Not a sacrifice acknowledged or a cost counted. Just: stated. The decision made and named in the register she used for decisions she had made and was certain of.
He looked at her. She looked at him. Something in the room changed — not dramatically, because they were not people who required drama for significant things. Just: the specific quality of a thing that had been unresolved becoming resolved. The London portal existed and the deadline existed and both of them knew both facts, and she was saying: the portal will close without my application in it, and I am at peace with that, and the peace is not resignation but choice.
He thought about what he had said in Henderson's office: *the paper is what it is.* He thought about what she had said: *I don't want to go to London.* Both statements in the same form — here is the real thing, without management, without the wound's version.
He said: "Thank you for waiting."
She said: "You came before you needed to."
He had had until March 15. He had come on March 11. He had not waited until the deadline pressure forced him — had arrived because *I'm here* had told him she was here and he had known: now.
He said: "I'm still going to need to think about Henderson. The questions. The viva."
She said: "I know. So will I." She held his gaze. "But that's a different conversation. Those are things we navigate. This" — she indicated the space between them, the flat, the morning, the Edinburgh outside the window — "is not navigation. This is just what it is."
This is just what it is.
He sat with that. He thought about all the things he had been trying to figure out how to say for three days and about how, in the end, the most important thing was the simplest: *I want you here.* And she had already known that she wanted to stay. Both of them had done the work separately, had arrived at the same place, and were now in the same room saying the real things.
He thought: I have been making some things more complicated than they needed to be.
He thought: this one is not complicated. This one is just true.
---
They sat with it for a while. Edinburgh outside. The morning proceeding. Neither of them rushed the silence because the silence was the good kind — the kind that existed after something had been said and was resting in the room with both of them, the kind that didn't require filling.
At some point she made tea. She brought two cups, and put one on the table beside him without saying anything, and he picked it up without saying anything. The tea ritual — hers, specific to her, the thing she did in labs and kitchens and apparently in Marchmont flats when something had been resolved and the ordinary needed to reassert itself.
He held the cup. He looked at Edinburgh. He thought about the viva in two weeks and about the paper and about Henderson and about all the things that were still real and still complicated and still required navigation. He thought about both things at the same time — the things that were complicated and the thing that was not complicated, and the way they coexisted in the same room in the same morning in the same city.
Both things at the same time. As always. This was how it worked. This was how it had always worked.
She sat beside him, Edinburgh outside her window, tea in hand, and they sat together in the morning and did not perform anything and did not require anything and the room held what it held.
He thought: I am in the right place.
He thought: I have been learning how to know this. I am learning it now.
Edinburgh outside. Late February, the last days before the city fully committed to spring, the specific quality of a morning that was still winter but promising something. He had been in Edinburgh for four and a half years. He was going to be here for at least two more. And here, in a flat in Marchmont with Edinburgh outside the window and a cup of tea in his hand and her beside him, was where he intended to be.
