Corin mentioned Rosch on a Wednesday morning, between his preliminary assessment notes and the first box of the day's archive work, in the same matter-of-fact register he had been using for personal information since the kitchen agreement.
"Rosch is coming Thursday," he said. "Monthly check-in."
Mira looked up from the Weavers' records. "Your neurologist."
"Yes." He turned a page in the assessment folder. "He usually does the check-in in the morning and then we go to the hospital in the south for any tests. He'll be back here in the afternoon." A pause. "If you're still here in the afternoon, I'd like to introduce you properly."
She received this. "Not as the researcher working on historical guild records."
"No," he said. "As the researcher who is also working with me directly. He knows about the agreement." He turned another page. "I told him several weeks ago."
She thought about this: that Rosch had known, had known before she had any formal acknowledgment from Corin himself about what they were doing. That the telling of it to Rosch had been a kind of recognition before the recognition existed in the reading room. People told their doctors things before they told anyone else. Or they told their doctors the same things they told the people they trusted, in whatever order the trust developed.
"I'll be here," she said.
---
Rosch arrived at ten Thursday morning. Corin met him in Archive House's ground floor entrance, and Mira heard them from the reading room above: the specific quality of two people greeting each other whose greetings had been abbreviated by long familiarity into something very compact. Then Tessa's voice, briefly. Then footsteps going into Tessa's office, where the check-ins usually happened.
She worked through the morning on the Weavers' records, which she had returned to for the final cross-reference verification. The Weavers' contribution to the cross-guild pattern was the most substantial and the least formally documented -- the guild had kept poor administrative records but unusually rich personal records, and the picture that emerged from the personal accounts was the clearest description of what the Halvern-associated phenomenon had felt like from the inside that she had found in any of the archive's collections.
She had been reading Ada Caslin's green-cover notebook again. The September 1893 entry, the one Corin had directed her to in the earliest days of their collaboration, remained the most lucid primary source. Caslin had written about the week with the specific combination of bewilderment and matter-of-fact observation that Mira had come to recognize as the characteristic tone of people confronting something they had no framework for: describing what had happened as accurately as possible, without the framework to interpret it, trusting the description to carry the meaning even without the interpretation.
She was thinking about this -- about what it meant to experience something without a framework, to have only the description and not the meaning -- when Rosch appeared in the reading room doorway.
He was shorter than she had expected, which she had no particular reason to expect anything about. Compact and alert in the manner of someone who had spent a career paying close attention to things people could not describe clearly. He looked at her with the specific assessment quality of a physician whose assessments had been calibrated on bodies rather than documents, and she had the brief impression of being read.
"Dr. Rosch," she said.
"Dr. Solenne." He came into the reading room and looked at the work spread across the table -- her side, the organized spread of notebooks and boxes and cross-reference sheets that had accumulated over three months. "Corin says you've confirmed the mechanism."
"The historical mechanism, yes." She gestured at the records. "The electromagnetic properties of the Grey Ferrite deposits create conditions for hyper-accelerated procedural learning in people with the right neurological vulnerability, with the specific cost of regular non-retention. The guild records document sixty years of it, in approximately forty individuals."
"And in Corin."
"Yes."
He sat down -- not at Corin's end of the table, at a chair against the wall, the position of someone visiting rather than working. He looked at the records. "What's your conclusion about prognosis? Historically."
"The historical members who left Alderheath appear to have had the cycling stop. The records aren't specific about the timeline. Some suggest it was immediate, some suggest it faded over several months." She paused. "There's no historical documentation of anyone staying indefinitely. Corin is the only case with a long-term record of continuous cycling."
"Seventy-nine cycles," Rosch said. "Almost eighty weeks."
"Yes."
He looked at her steadily. "He's agreed to tell you what it's like."
"He's told me some of it," she said. "He's careful about what he says and when. I think that's appropriate."
Rosch was quiet for a moment. "He's been careful about what he tells everyone since the accident. For good reasons -- the two researchers who came in the early months were interested in the mechanism, not in the person." He looked at the records on the table. "You're interested in both."
She looked at Rosch. "Is that a concern?"
"No," he said. "It's an observation." A pause. "He's doing better recently. I wanted you to know that. Whatever is happening in this room has been good for him."
---
Dinner was at the small restaurant near the river where Corin ate on Fridays -- he had been going there long enough that the owner knew his order. They sat at a corner table, the three of them, in the particular intimacy of a small restaurant on a weeknight when most tables were empty. Mira had the specific experience of being at a table with two people who knew each other well and one of whom she was developing her own knowledge of, and finding that the configuration was more comfortable than she had expected.
Corin was different in Rosch's presence than he was in the archive. Not more relaxed exactly -- he was, in the reading room, more relaxed than she had ever seen him in the first weeks. Different, in the way people were different with people who had known them before a significant event versus after it. Rosch had known Corin before the accident and since, had a longitudinal knowledge of him that she could not have, and the relationship between them showed this in the quality of its ease.
Rosch asked Mira about her research with the directness of someone who had been briefed and wanted to verify the briefing. She answered directly. He asked good questions -- not the questions of someone assessing a methodology but the questions of someone who had been sitting with the phenomenon from a clinical angle for a year and a half and was curious what the historical angle added.
"The guild committee," he said, at one point. "The 1897 decision to monitor without documenting individual cases. Do you think that was the right decision?"
She considered it. "It was the right institutional decision. They didn't have the framework to document it accurately, and inaccurate documentation would have been worse than none." She paused. "Whether it was the right decision for the individuals involved is a different question. Some of them clearly needed to talk to someone."
"Merrin kept his own record," Rosch said.
"Merrin kept his own record," she agreed.
Corin, who had been listening to this exchange without participating, said: "Merrin also chaired the committee that decided not to document."
Both Rosch and Mira looked at him.
"He made both decisions," Corin said. "The institutional one and the personal one. He understood why the institution should not document, and he also understood that someone needed to write it down anyway, even if only for themselves."
Rosch looked at Corin with the expression of someone hearing a thing that had been in the vicinity for some time and had just been stated precisely. "That sounds like something you understand."
"I understand it now," Corin said. "I didn't for a long time."
He looked at Mira when he said the second sentence.
She looked back.
Rosch looked at both of them with the clinical patience of a man who had learned to observe carefully without announcing his observations. He picked up his glass.
"Well," he said, in the tone of someone who had confirmed what they had come to confirm. "The research sounds thorough."
---
Rosch left after dinner, heading south to the hospital for an early morning. He said goodbye to Mira in the lane outside the restaurant with the specific economy of someone whose goodbyes were managed in the same way as everything else.
"He told Tessa something similar," he said, quietly, while Corin went back inside to retrieve his coat. "About you. Before the agreement."
She looked at him. "What did he say?"
"That you were observing carefully and treating what you found with appropriate care." Rosch looked at the lane, the lamplight on the cobblestones. "He doesn't say that about most people." He looked back at her. "He doesn't say most things to most people."
Corin came out with his coat and the three of them said the final goodbyes and Rosch walked to his car. Mira and Corin stood in the lane while the car pulled away.
"He thinks you're good at this," Corin said.
"The research?"
He looked at her. "All of it," he said, and turned toward the workshop.
She walked south to the guesthouse carrying that sentence, which was small and specific and contained considerably more than its surface, and thinking about what all of it was and whether she was, in fact, good at it, and what good meant in that context when it was harder and harder to say where the research ended and everything else began.
She had not thought much about what it would feel like to meet Rosch. He was a fixture in the architecture of Corin's life the same way the archive was and the workshop was and Tessa was -- someone who had been present through the long months of the condition and had remained, which was its own kind of statement. She had known about him as she knew about the other constants: from the Ledger, from Corin's occasional mentions, from the medical-framework language that showed up in certain of Corin's descriptions of his own experience.
Meeting him was different from knowing about him, which was a thing she had been learning repeatedly in Alderheath.
The check-in had lasted three hours. She had been in the reading room for most of it, working on the final cross-reference layer of the Weavers' documentation. Occasionally she had heard the specific quality of the conversation below -- not words, but tone. The low even exchange of two people working through something they had worked through many times before, the cadence of a relationship that had established its own efficient language.
She thought about what it was like to have one person in the world who knew everything. Not most things. Everything.
She had had her father, once. Before the paper. Before she had understood what knowing everything about her research had meant to him and what it had cost her. She had revised, after that, the way she thought about disclosure. Had learned to hold things more carefully, to be more cautious about who she told what and when. She had been in the field for five years since, and she had good colleagues and excellent professional relationships and nobody who knew everything.
Rosch's visit reminded her that this was a specific kind of loneliness. Not the dramatic kind. The steady, ambient kind that you became so accustomed to that you stopped registering it as loneliness and simply registered it as the texture of being yourself.
She was not sure what she was to Corin at this point. But she was increasingly sure that she was not nobody, and that the not-nobody-ness was moving in a specific direction, and that the direction was one she had been moving in for longer than she had been consciously aware of.
---
Corin came back to the reading room while she was packing up in the late afternoon.
"How was it?" she asked. The check-in, she meant.
"Standard," he said, which was the word he used for cycles that followed the expected pattern. Then: "He says the cycle timing has been stable. The shortening he was tracking last year has leveled off." He set down his bag. "He thinks the stable working environment is contributing to that."
She thought about what a stable working environment meant. The archive, with its consistent demands. The same building, the same colleagues, the same materials. The same reading room and its particular quality of quiet.
"That's good news," she said.
"Yes." He looked at the reading room. "He also thinks the" -- a pause that was not quite the calculating pause and not quite another kind, something between -- "the changed social context may be a factor."
She looked at him.
"His words," Corin said. "Not mine." He looked at the table, at the familiar arrangement of their respective working materials at their respective ends. "He's usually right about these things."
"What would your words be?" she asked.
He was quiet for a moment. Then: "The same thing. Different vocabulary."
She absorbed this. He picked up his bag, checked his folder. She finished packing her notebooks. They left the reading room together and went down the stairs and said good night to Tessa, who said good night back with the specific economy of someone who had just observed two people having a conversation that was mostly not about what it said it was about.
---
She had walked home from the restaurant carrying *all of it* and the particular way he had said it, which she had replayed twice on the ten-minute walk.
What was all of it?
She had been careful, consistently, to define her engagement with Corin's situation as primarily professional. The research was real and important. The documentation she was producing would stand as the most complete record of the Halvern-associated phenomenon in existence. She was doing rigorous, careful work. None of that was false.
But all of it was also something broader than the research, and she knew it, and Rosch knew it, and Corin knew it, which meant everyone who needed to know it knew it, and the question was what happened with the knowing.
She had a hypothesis about what could happen. She had been forming this hypothesis for several weeks. She had not written it in any of her notebooks, because this was the kind of hypothesis that needed to be held rather than recorded until she knew what the evidence was doing.
She sat at the desk and looked at the closed notebooks and the river outside and the particular quality of the March night, which was colder than it looked.
She thought about Merrin, who had chaired the committee and kept his own record. Who had understood both kinds of decision -- the institutional kind and the personal kind -- and had made both. Who had needed someone to know, even if the someone was future.
She thought about what it meant to make both kinds of decisions simultaneously. What it cost. What it protected.
She opened the personal journal and wrote: *Rosch says he's doing better. I believe this. I think I am part of why, in a small but not negligible way. I am not sure how to feel about that except carefully.*
She looked at the word carefully.
She wrote below it: *Carefully is the right word. But I am not sure careful is the same as cautious, and I am not sure cautious is what I am anymore.*
She closed the journal. The river ran outside. In six weeks she would be done with the research. In six weeks she would have to make a decision about whether done with the research and done with Alderheath were the same thing.
She thought they were not. She thought they had stopped being the same thing some time ago.
She went to sleep thinking about timelines and about all of it and about the particular way he had said that Rosch was usually right about these things.
In the morning she arrived at Archive House at the same time as usual, and Corin was already there, and the reading room was the reading room, and the particular quality of it that morning had the something-known-between-them texture that had been developing for weeks and was now present in a way that was no longer new but was not yet ordinary. She thought it might never become ordinary. She was not sure she wanted it to.
She sat down. He said good morning. She said good morning. She opened the Weavers' records and he opened the assessment folder and the working day began in the manner of working days that contained more than their surface, which was the only kind of working day they had now.
She thought: six weeks.
She thought: it is not enough.
She looked at the records in front of her and wrote the cross-reference notation she had been building toward and kept working, because the work was real and the time was finite and she intended to use both of those things as fully as she could manage.
Outside, the March sky had the particular quality of March skies in mountain valleys -- neither fully winter nor fully spring, suspended in a kind of potential that the place had been holding since the season began to shift, waiting for the moment when something would tip it one way or the other. She found it apt. She had always liked suspended things. Things that had not yet declared themselves. The potential in them before the tipping. Though she was also, as she looked at the March sky through the reading room window, aware that she wanted some things to tip. That she was not entirely neutral about the direction.
