The notebook Mira had started keeping for Corin Albrecht specifically was not her research notebook. It was a smaller, separate book -- the kind she kept for field observations that had not yet declared themselves as evidence, things she had seen and heard and noticed that she was accumulating because they might matter, even though she did not yet know how.
She had started it on the fourth day, the Thursday when she had watched him work through the window of the Bellmaker's Row building and had asked about the metal brace technique and had registered, in the precise categorizing part of her mind that ran below conscious thought, two distinct kinds of answer. One was the kind that came from the body: immediate, certain, no visible calculation. The other was the kind that came from somewhere else: accurate, detailed, technically correct, but with a quality of distance that the first kind did not have.
She had written that night: Two types of knowledge. Type 1 -- immediate, total, comes from hands. Type 2 -- accurate but constructed, comes from elsewhere. He does not appear to experience them as different. But they are different.
By the end of the second week she had seven pages in the observation notebook.
She ran her first deliberate test on the Tuesday of week three.
It presented itself naturally, which she had been waiting for. Corin came into the reading room at ten in the morning carrying a piece of hardware from the Bellmaker's Row assessment -- a metal lock from one of the original door fixtures, the mechanism intact but the casing showing the surface rust of a hundred and thirty years in a damp stone building. He set it on the table to examine before logging it in the assessment record. She watched him examine it.
He turned it over in his hands. He held it up to the light from the reading room windows. He did something with his thumb at the pivot point of the mechanism. He set it down, picked it up again, and performed three more specific movements that she could not name from her position but which had the quality of a conversation rather than an inspection -- the quality of someone who was receiving information rather than looking for it.
"That's from the iron period of the collection," she said, keeping her voice the neutral tone she used for straightforward professional observations. "Same technique you were using on the brace last Thursday?"
"Similar." He did not look up. "Same decade, same workshop probably. You can see the tooling marks on the casing are consistent -- the same hand, or the same training." He identified three more technical specifics in the next forty seconds, each one particular enough that she could verify it against the reference texts: the alloy composition, the heat treatment indicated by the surface color change pattern, the approximate date of the pivot replacement which was clearly later than the original manufacture.
She wrote nothing immediately. She recorded the exchange in her head, where she had good retention.
She waited a day and a half.
On Wednesday afternoon -- she had counted from the beginning of what she had tentatively labeled the metalwork cycle -- she introduced the second part of the test.
"The lock you were examining yesterday," she said, during a pause in the reading room's working quiet. "The adjustment you made at the pivot. I'd like to understand that technique for the assessment notes. Would you walk me through it?"
He looked up. He looked at the lock, which she had left on the table between them since the previous day. He picked it up.
His hands placed themselves correctly. She could see this -- the fingers went to the right positions, the body remembered where to go. He applied the pressure. The mechanism did not give in the way it had the previous day. He adjusted slightly. Tried again. Set it down with the particular care of someone who is setting down an object and also setting down the intention to try again.
"I can walk you through the mechanical principle," he said.
"Please," she said, and opened her notebook.
He described every step of the adjustment accurately and in correct sequence. The description was a perfect account of what she had watched him do the previous day. His hands, during the description, lay quietly on the table. They did not demonstrate. They knew they could not demonstrate, and so they waited.
She wrote while he talked, and her handwriting was very neat, and she did not look up, and when he finished she said: "Thank you, that's helpful," in the voice that meant what it said and also meant more than it said.
In the observation notebook that evening she wrote: Tuesday, metalwork cycle active -- total execution competence. Wednesday, day after observed cycle shift -- declarative competence intact, motor competence absent. Not partial retention. Not degraded performance. Complete absence of executive function with complete retention of descriptive function. This is not how skill loss works. This is something else.
She put that notebook down and picked up the hypothesis notebook and wrote: Seven-day cycle of complete competence in specific domain followed by transition to complete competence in different domain. Working hypothesis: the shift happens at consistent intervals. Mechanism: unknown, but proximity to Halvern mine plausible based on guild records.
She looked at what she had written. She drew a box around the word cycle.
---
The afternoon of the same day she had watched him replace a window screw at Tessa's request.
It had taken four minutes and twelve seconds, which she had timed unobtrusively by looking at her watch when he began and again when he finished. She had watched his hands. The screwdriver, the specific angle of approach to the stripped slot, the way he read the resistance in the screw and compensated with the exact degree of additional pressure needed. Not thinking about it. Not deciding. The body simply knowing.
She had asked afterward: "How long have you been working on this kind of repair?"
He paused. Not a long pause -- most people would not have registered it. She registered it because she had been watching for it.
"A while," he said.
"Here in Alderheath or before?"
"Both."
"Is it teachable? The technique."
Another pause. "The principle is teachable," he said. "The execution takes time."
He picked up his bag and left the reading room. She wrote in the observation notebook: When asked about duration of training, the pause comes before the approximate answer. He knows the duration. He is calculating how much to say. The accurate answer would require explaining context that he is not currently prepared to explain.
She sat with this for a while, and then she read back through the seven pages of the observation notebook from the beginning.
The pattern was consistent. When his current cycle's skills were relevant to the question, his answers were immediate. When the question required him to account for skills from previous cycles, a pause appeared and the answer shifted to the approximate, the qualified, the gestured-at. He was not lying. He was answering truthfully within constraints that she did not yet fully understand.
She turned to the back of the observation notebook and wrote the formal hypothesis for the first time, in the careful language she used when she was trying to be precise rather than fast:
Working hypothesis: C.A.'s professional competence operates in cycles of approximately seven days, during which he has complete competence in one domain followed by transition to complete competence in a different domain. He is aware of this pattern and manages it carefully. He has not explained it to me and has deflected all direct approaches. Likely connection to Halvern mine and the Halvern-associated members documented in guild records from 1890s.
Below that, in smaller writing: He is doing what the committee did in 1897. Managing without documenting. Monitoring without explaining.
She thought about the crossed-out fifth term in the working protocol.
She thought about what it must be like to keep this managed, week after week, for as long as he had been doing it. The constant calibration of what to say and what not to say. The care required to appear consistent when you were not.
She was not angry about being managed. She understood why a person would manage this carefully and she respected the management even as she worked around it. She was also aware -- she was always aware, when she got to this point in a research problem -- that understanding the shape of something was not the same as understanding the thing itself. She had the shape. She did not yet have the thing.
The Merrin records were on the archive shelf. She had requested them for Thursday.
She closed the observation notebook. Opened the research notebook to the page where she had been building the cross-guild membership timeline. Returned to the guild records with the specific quality of attention she brought to things she knew were important, which was her best quality of attention -- steady, thorough, not impatient, willing to sit with the incomplete until it became complete.
The river was audible through the guesthouse window. Outside, Alderheath was settling into its February evening. Somewhere on the northern edge of town, she imagined, the workshop lamp was on and Corin Albrecht was writing in a notebook of his own, keeping his own record of the week, tracking whatever it was he tracked.
She found that she hoped he had good records.
Good records were what made it possible, eventually, to understand what had happened.
The Merrin personal records were scheduled for Thursday. Before Thursday arrived there was Wednesday evening and the specific quality of Wednesday evenings in the guesthouse room, which had become, in three weeks, a room that Mira associated with thinking rather than only with sleeping -- the space where the research notebook and the observation notebook and the hypothesis notebook came together on the small desk by the window, and where she sat in the lamplight with Alderheath quiet outside and tried to build the picture from what she had.
She spread everything she had on Corin Albrecht across the desk.
The observation notebook: seven pages of field notes, dating from day four to the present day. The research notebook: three pages of cross-references between his known working periods and the guild records timeline, which she had been building carefully and which did not yet have enough data to conclude anything but which had a shape that she found consistent. The hypothesis notebook: the boxed word cycle, the working hypothesis, the note about the committee from 1897 and their management-without-explanation approach.
She read through the observation notes from the beginning.
What struck her, reading them in order, was the texture of his management. It was not defensive -- she had encountered defensive management of inconvenient information in her professional life, the way researchers sometimes managed subjects who had secrets, and it looked different from what she was seeing with Corin. Defensive management had a quality of pressure behind it, of resistance that gave away the shape of the thing being defended. His management had none of that pressure. It had the quality of precision, of care, of someone who had thought carefully about what was needed and was providing exactly that without excess.
He was not hiding. He was managing the disclosure rate.
She wrote this in the observation notebook. Then she looked at it for a while.
Managing disclosure rate implied that disclosure was intended, eventually. That the rate was the variable, not the outcome. She had worked with sources who never intended to tell her what they knew -- people who managed information permanently, who were managing it toward indefinite deferral rather than toward a considered moment of release. He did not feel like that. He felt like someone who was waiting for a condition to be met.
She thought about what the condition might be.
She had met him on day three. She had been in Alderheath for three weeks and three days. Twelve percent of her three-month window had elapsed. She had watched him work in metalwork week and woodworking week. She had seen him test badly on the day after a cycle shift and well on the day before. She had heard him describe, in perfect detail, skills that his body could no longer execute. She had seen him look at the Halvern-associated members entry in the guild minutes with an expression that she had classified in the observation notebook as recognition rather than interest.
None of this constituted the condition. None of this had moved him to say: here is what is happening.
The Merrin records were on Thursday. The Merrin records were what she needed to see.
---
The morning was clear for the first time in a week, the clouds having moved east overnight, and the February sun came through the reading room windows at an actual angle rather than diffusing through overcast. It changed the quality of the space: shadows on the table for the first time, the dust in the air becoming visible in the slanted light, the stone walls showing their actual colors rather than their overcast approximations.
Corin was already in the reading room when she arrived. He had the hardware assessment folder open, and he did not look up when she came in, but there was a quality in his stillness that was the stillness of someone who had heard the door below and had registered who it was before deciding how to hold their body.
She settled at her end of the table with her notebooks.
She was aware of him in the way that the reading room had slowly been making her aware of him -- the specific quality of his presence in a shared working space, which was quiet and non-intrusive and nevertheless entirely present. He was not someone you stopped noticing. She had been thinking about why, and had concluded that it was because he was always attending, which meant that when he was nearby she was receiving attention whether or not he was looking at her. It was not uncomfortable. It was simply unmistakeable.
She opened the research notebook and returned to the guild records timeline.
"Thursday," he said, without looking up.
"I'm sorry?"
"The Merrin materials." He turned a page of the assessment folder. "Tessa confirmed they're ready. Thursday morning."
"I know," she said. "She told me yesterday."
"I know she did." He kept reading. "I thought you might want to look at them together."
She looked across the table at him. He was apparently examining a photograph of a door bracket. His expression was entirely neutral. She thought about what it meant that he had offered this -- not as something she had requested or negotiated, not as a condition, but as a simple offer of joint examination. The kind of offer that was, on the surface, professionally reasonable and which had other layers she could see without pressing on.
"All right," she said.
He nodded, still looking at the photograph.
She returned to the guild records.
The rest of the morning was the usual working quiet, pages and pen and the river below and the winter sun doing its slow work across the table. She noted, by midday, that the light on his side of the table had moved from the left of his folder to the right, which meant two hours had passed. She noted this because she had noticed she sometimes lost track of time in this room in a way she did not usually lose track of time at work, which she attributed to the quality of the working quiet, which was different from the working quiet of places she had worked alone.
She added a note to the observation notebook in small letters: Good rooms for thinking are partly made by the people in them. Then she looked at it and capped the pen and put the observation notebook away, because some observations were for herself and not for the record.
Thursday would come. She would read the Merrin notebook. Whatever it said, she would read it carefully.
Whatever Corin knew about what it said -- and she was now almost certain he knew -- she would let him tell her in his own time. The condition, whatever it was, would eventually be met. She was doing the work of meeting it without forcing it, and she thought that was the correct approach, and she was prepared to be patient about it for as long as patience was what was needed.
She turned back to the guild records and found where she had been and resumed the reading.
She finished the guild records for the day at half past four, when the light in the reading room had gone from winter afternoon to winter evening and the room needed the electric lamps to be comfortable. She stacked the boxes in the return pile for Tessa, put her notebooks in order, and looked across the table at Corin, who was finishing a note in his assessment folder with the characteristic small handwriting she had come to recognize at twenty feet.
He looked up.
"Thursday," she said. It was not a question. It was a confirmation of what had been offered and accepted in the morning, turned into a single word.
"Thursday," he said, in the same register.
He closed his folder. She closed her notebook. They filed out of the reading room one after the other, and in the hallway below Tessa was locking the manuscript room and she said good night to both of them in the tone of someone who had noticed something and had decided not to comment on it, which was Tessa's most expressive register.
Outside, the February evening had the particular clarity of nights after clear days in mountain valleys -- cold and absolutely still, the stars beginning to appear above the ridge. Mira walked south toward the guesthouse with her notebooks in the satchel and thought about the Merrin records and about patience and about what kind of condition needed to be met before a careful person told you the truth about something important.
She thought she was getting closer to finding out.
