The maintenance check was routine.
He ran them every four days — a systematic verification of the Director's Cut's operational status, a review of the system's component functions, a confirmation that the rest protocol was producing the recovery the projections had indicated. The checks were brief and practical and he had been running them since day three without particular emotional investment in their results.
The check on the morning of day twenty-five began like all the others.
He verified the Editing Mind threshold — restricted, stable, the rest protocol holding. He verified the spatial analysis functions — passive collection only, operating within parameters. He verified the scene panel access — dormant, which was where he had put it and where he intended to keep it for the next two days. He verified the Affection Gauge.
The Affection Gauge returned:
**AFFECTION GAUGE — HAN CHAE-WON** **Status: REDACTED**
Not UNKNOWN. Not RECALIBRATING. Not the reading he had been watching grow for twenty-five days through the successive states of cautious interest and pattern recognition and trust threshold and unclassified transitional and all the other clinical language the system had used to describe something that was not, he understood now, a clinical thing.
REDACTED.
He tested the gauge on Jin-hyuk: normal reading, immediate population.
On Kim, the team member who had been with them at the containment chamber: normal reading.
On Chae-won again: REDACTED.
The diagnostic he ran in response returned a note that he read three times:
**[DIAGNOSTIC NOTE: Affection Gauge for designated subject HAN CHAE-WON has been redacted by subject's own emotional architecture. This is not a system malfunction. The subject's emotional state has reached a configuration that exceeds the gauge's classification parameters. The gauge cannot categorize what it is reading because the reading does not correspond to any existing category in the system's framework. This has not occurred before in this system's operational history.]**
He sat with this for a long time.
---
The Affection Gauge, he understood now, had been built on a particular assumption: that emotional states were classifiable. That what a person felt could be read as data — cautious interest, pattern recognition, trust, positive valence, approaching threshold, transitional — and that data could be processed and reported. The gauge had been doing this for twenty-five days. It had been doing it imperfectly, incompletely, through UNKNOWN and RECALIBRATING and the readings he had closed before they finished because he was not ready for what they said, but it had been doing it.
It had stopped doing it.
Not because he had closed it. Not because the system was degraded — he was at eighty-three percent capacity and the gauge had been running at lower capacity than this and had still produced readings. It had stopped because what Chae-won was carrying had become something the gauge did not have a framework for.
He thought about what the gauge's framework had been built for. He had written the Affection Gauge into the screenplay as a game-mechanic — a system that measured romantic progress in the way that games measured relationship stats, producing numerical outputs that corresponded to stages of affection. He had written it as a tool for knowing.
He thought about the supply corridor. About *I love you too.* About the divided equipment list and the specific gravity of *your call* and the morning routines that had the same shape as always and a different weight.
He thought that what Chae-won was carrying was not a stage of affection. It was not progress toward a threshold. It was not classifiable in the terms the gauge had been designed to use.
The gauge could not read it.
This was, he recognized, correct.
---
He found her at midday — the noon patrol brief he had been scheduled to give on the cache defense parameters, which had been an operational meeting twenty-four hours ago and was still an operational meeting, because the supply network still needed defending and the parameters still needed briefing.
She was in the sixth-floor conference room with the security team's assignment list and the eastern cache schematic, which she had sourced from the Finance Center's documents and annotated in the precise way she annotated things: specific, efficient, no wasted markings.
He briefed the cache defense parameters. She asked three targeted questions. He answered them. The team assignments were confirmed. The operational meeting was operational.
When the team cleared out, she stayed.
*"What is it?"* she asked, in the tone she used when she had registered that he was carrying something and was creating space for it without requiring it.
He considered the maintenance check results.
*"The Affection Gauge,"* he said. *"For you. I ran the maintenance check this morning."*
*"What did it show?"*
*"Nothing."* He paused. *"Not nothing-error. Nothing-redacted. The system returned a diagnostic note saying your emotional state has exceeded the gauge's classification parameters. It can't read you anymore."*
She looked at him. *"Is that a problem?"*
He thought about this. He thought about the twenty-five days of using the gauge as information, as certainty, as the mechanism by which he had known things he was not ready to simply feel. He thought about the week since he had stopped opening it. He thought about whether the absence of the gauge had cost him anything.
*"No,"* he said. *"I don't think it is."*
*"Then why are you telling me?"*
*"Because we agreed on the honest ones,"* he said. *"And this is one."*
She looked at him. The direct look, complete, no armor visible. *"What does it mean — that it can't read me?"*
He thought about the diagnostic note. About *exceeds the gauge's classification parameters.* About the category that did not exist in the system's framework.
*"I think it means,"* he said, *"that what you feel has become something the system isn't designed to measure. The gauge was built to track — stages. Progress toward something. Classifiable emotional states with defined parameters."* He held her gaze. *"What you're carrying is not a stage. It's not progress toward a threshold. The gauge doesn't have a word for it."*
She was quiet for a moment.
*"And you?"* she said. *"Do you have a word for it?"*
*"No,"* he said. *"But I know it when I see it. I've been seeing it for about twenty-five days."*
---
The corner of her mouth.
Not the almost-smile — the real one, the supply-corridor one, small and private and belonging entirely to this conversation.
*"So you're going to have to read me the old-fashioned way,"* she said.
*"Yes."*
*"How's that going?"*
He thought about the thirty-seven expressions Jin-hyuk had mentioned she had cataloged. He thought about the equipment list and the almost-smile that had become a real one and the *good* and the *your call* and the way she had taken the active threat management with the specific efficiency of someone who had decided what the next two days looked like.
*"Better than the system ever did,"* he said.
She held his gaze. The expression on her face was the one he had twenty-five days of data on — not the armor, not the almost-smile, the third one, the specific one that he had been cataloging since the supply corridor and that the gauge had apparently been correctly unable to classify. He did not need a classification. He knew what it was.
*"The gauge,"* she said. *"What do you do with it now?"*
*"Close it,"* he said. *"For the last time. It doesn't have anything for me anymore."*
*"When?"*
*"Now,"* he said.
He opened the Affection Gauge panel — not to read it, because it had nothing to read, but to close it properly, with intention, in the way you close a door when you are leaving a room and do not intend to return. He looked at REDACTED for a moment.
Then he closed it.
Not with the quick dismissal he had been using for twenty-five days — the close that was a not-looking, a deferral, a *not yet.* With the finality of something completed. The Affection Gauge panel disappeared from his interface, and the Director's Cut's information architecture reorganized slightly around its absence, and the space where it had been was — not empty. The same space, without the gauge in it.
Better that way.
*"Done,"* he said.
Chae-won looked at him with the uncategorizable expression. *"How does it feel?"*
*"Like I can see more clearly,"* he said. *"Strange as that sounds."*
*"It doesn't sound strange,"* she said. *"It sounds like what happens when you stop looking at the map and look at the territory."*
He thought about this. *"That's accurate."*
*"Architects know about that,"* she said. *"The drawings are necessary. They're not the building."*
---
That night, Min-woo sat at the corner table in the specific quiet of a Finance Center that had been through twenty-five days of crisis and had become, in that time, something recognizable as a home — not comfortable exactly, not the home of before, but the home of people who have organized themselves around survival and found, in the organization, something more than they were looking for.
The Director's Cut was on passive. The Affection Gauge was closed permanently. The rest protocol was holding.
He opened the Spirit Tribe section of the Director's Cut's Elisia data — not to process it, just to look at what was there. The trial section, which he had been avoiding because his notes for it were sparse.
*[Trial sequence — develop later.]*
Later was now. He had been knowing this for some time.
He thought about intent. About what the trial would show when it rendered his intent visible to the Spirit Tribe and to the party and to Chae-won, who was somewhere in the Finance Center in the direction of the dormitory level, who had read structural textbooks after midnight in the Hanseong compound and had wanted to build things that earned their shape and had spent twenty-five days becoming the most clearly-seen person he had ever known.
He thought: *the trial is going to show what I carry. What I carry is this. Whatever this is — the thing the gauge couldn't classify, the thing that the supply corridor named and that both of us know the name of now.*
He thought: *I don't think the Spirit Tribe is going to have any trouble reading it.*
He thought: *I don't think she is either.*
He thought about the honest ones. About the twenty-five days of them, the accumulation, the slow revelation that had been going on since a corridor stairwell on day one when a woman he had written had looked at a person he had never expected to be and asked: *who are you?*
He thought he had been answering that question ever since.
He thought he knew the answer now.
He closed the Director's Cut, and the Finance Center was quiet, and the Elisian light did what the Elisian light did, and the trial was tomorrow, and Kang Min-woo sat in the room he had been living in for twenty-five days and was, for the first time, entirely in it.
