The Spirit Tribe territory announced itself through the ground before the eye.
Min-woo felt the change in the path's texture as the crossing party moved northeast from the Finance Center — not a dramatic transition, not the palace's architectural integration or the Gate's visible portal. A gradual shift in how the earth received weight: more deliberately, as though the ground had opinions about who walked on it and was taking its time forming them.
The Director's Cut was flagging the territorial boundary through a new data type it had been developing since the hybrid city's merger: the Elisian magical signature reader, which processed the continent's ambient informational field the way the Seoul dungeon's minimap had processed creature movement. Different data, different quality. The Seoul data had been certain and directional. This was suggestive and layered, like reading a room by the way the light fell rather than by where people were standing.
He had been learning to read it for three days.
The party was six people: Jin-hyuk, his three team members, Min-woo, Chae-won. The same core team that had entered Gyeongbok Palace, that had come through the Gate, that had been operating as a unit through twenty-six days of increasingly complex territory. They had the specific cohesion of people who had survived things together and had stopped performing readiness because readiness had become simply the state they existed in.
Chae-won was at his left. Jin-hyuk was at his right. The party moved through the Elisian morning, which was warm and attentive, and the Spirit Tribe territory received them.
---
The Director's Cut update arrived at 9:23.
**[SPIRIT TRIBE TERRITORY — ACTIVE]** **Saint's party recognized: entry confirmed** **Trial requirement: triggered** **Timeline: 24-48 hours after territorial entry** **System status: 94% capacity — within acceptable threshold for trial conduit function**
He read the ninety-four percent with relief he had not anticipated feeling.
Three days of the rest protocol — three days of passive collection and minimum Editing Mind use and Chae-won managing the active threat response while he ran on direct observation and pattern recognition — had produced a system that was nearly at full capacity. Nearly. Not the hundred percent of day one, not the damaged eighty-three percent of the coma's aftermath. Ninety-four percent, which was sufficient, which was the word the Director's Cut used for things that were not perfect and were adequate.
He would take adequate. Adequate was what he had available.
He told the group about the trial in the clearing they reached at mid-morning — the full version, not the summary. *The Spirit Tribe will assess the intent of everyone accompanying the Saint. The assessment is magical: it reads psychological state and motivation. The results will be visible to the full party.* He looked at each of them in turn. *Anyone who doesn't want their intent visible should leave the territory now.*
No one left.
Jin-hyuk, to his right, was looking at the clearing's edge with the expression of someone who had already made this decision and was not revisiting it.
---
Jin-hyuk found him during the midday rest.
The party had established a temporary position in a Spirit Tribe clearing — the scouts had appeared twice, assessing them with the magical attention Min-woo had encountered once before, brief and thorough and followed by withdrawal. The assessment was ongoing. The trial was not yet. In the interval, people ate and rested and occupied themselves with the practical tasks of people waiting for something significant.
Jin-hyuk sat down beside Min-woo with the ease he brought to all spaces and the quality of attention that meant this was not a casual proximity.
*"Your intent is going to be visible,"* Jin-hyuk said.
*"Yes."*
*"And you're okay with that."*
Min-woo thought about this genuinely — the specific question of whether he was okay with it, which was not the same as being ready for it, which was not the same as having resolved everything the trial would make visible. The Director's Cut, the screenplay, the twenty-eight days of management and chosen honesty and the things he had said and not said and finally said in a supply corridor the day before yesterday. All of it.
*"Yes,"* he said. *"I think I am."*
Jin-hyuk looked at him. *"What changed?"*
*"The things I'm afraid of having visible — I've already said them. To her. Not everything, not all the history, but the — the essential things."* He paused. *"The trial will show the history. She already has the essential things. I think those are the things that matter."*
*"And the history?"*
*"She can decide what to do with it,"* he said. *"I'd rather she had it than not have it."*
Jin-hyuk was quiet for a moment. *"That's different from how you've been operating."*
*"Yes,"* Min-woo said. *"I know."*
---
They were quiet for a while, in the way they had learned to be quiet together — the specific quality of two people who had found an unexpected understanding and were not performing it.
Then Jin-hyuk said: *"I've been thinking about what I want the trial to show about me."*
Min-woo waited.
*"And I've been thinking about whether what I want it to show is what's actually there."* He was looking at the clearing's edge — at the Elisian trees that had the quality of things that had been growing for a very long time and were not going to be hurried. *"I think they're the same. What I want it to show is what's there."*
*"What do you want it to show?"*
*"Someone who's been choosing correctly,"* Jin-hyuk said. *"And needs to keep choosing."*
The words landed with the weight of something that had been thought through carefully and was being offered without decoration. Not the performance of heroism — the plain statement of a person who had been doing the work of character in the specific and unglamorous way that character actually worked: one decision at a time, each decision independent of the one before, the pattern only visible in retrospect.
*"What does correctly mean for you?"* Min-woo asked.
Jin-hyuk was quiet for a moment — the real quiet, not the performative pause. *"It means I've been aware of the gravity,"* he said. *"The pull toward — the original positions. The places the script wanted me to be. I've been feeling it for a long time."* He paused. *"And stepping out of it. Not because I don't feel it. Because what I feel when I step out of it is more like myself than what I feel when I follow it."*
Min-woo listened to this carefully. There was something in it that was more personal than anything Jin-hyuk had said to him before — not the operational confidence or the generous directness or the easy warmth, but something underneath all of those, the person who had been making difficult choices in the specific quiet of his own interior and was, for the first time, saying so.
*"The trial is going to show that,"* Jin-hyuk said. *"I think I'm ready for it to show that."*
*"You should be,"* Min-woo said.
Jin-hyuk looked at him.
*"You've been making the harder choice every time,"* Min-woo said. *"Not the easy one, not the heroic one. The harder one — the one that costs you something and is right anyway."* He paused. *"The trial is going to show someone who deserves to be recognized for that. I think you know that."*
Jin-hyuk was quiet for a moment. Not the performer's quiet — the real one, the kind that appears when someone receives something they didn't expect and are deciding what to do with it.
*"Thank you,"* he said. The two words, offered simply, without performance. Then: *"Can I ask you something?"*
*"Yes."*
*"When this is done — the trial, the Author's Curse, all of it — what do you want?"*
Min-woo thought about this. He had been thinking about variations of this question since the supply corridor, since the completion of the incomplete sentence, since the understanding that the honest ones had been accumulating toward something specific. What did he want. Not what the screenplay had originally given him. Not what survival required. What he actually wanted.
*"Something ordinary,"* he said. *"Specific ordinary things. Coffee in the morning without a threat assessment running. A room that isn't a Finance Center conference space. Time that isn't organized around survival."* He paused. *"Her,"* he said. *"In all of it. The ordinary things and the non-ordinary things. Her."*
Jin-hyuk smiled. The real one. *"That sounds like a complete answer."*
*"What about you?"* Min-woo asked.
---
Jin-hyuk was quiet for a longer time than the question seemed to require. Min-woo waited — had learned, over twenty-eight days, that Jin-hyuk's pauses were never absence of thought. They were presence of thought, the time it took to find the honest version of something.
*"To write the next part myself,"* Jin-hyuk said. *"Not the part the script assigned me. The part I choose."* He looked at the Elisian trees. *"I've been the Son of the War God since I was sixteen. I've been very good at it. I think I'd like to find out what I'm like when I'm something else."*
*"You of all people understand that,"* he added, looking at Min-woo.
*"Yes,"* Min-woo said. *"I do."*
*"The screenplay you were writing,"* Jin-hyuk said. *"The one you hadn't finished. Is it different now?"*
Min-woo thought about the screenplay he had been keeping in his head for three years — the one about a person who spent their whole life writing other people's stories and ended up in one by accident. About the part he had not finished. About the last page he had not written.
*"The ending,"* he said. *"I think I know what happens now."*
*"Does it end well?"*
*"Yes,"* he said. *"I think it does. But not because I wrote it that way. Because the people in it chose it."*
Jin-hyuk nodded. *"That's the best kind."*
---
That evening, as the Spirit Tribe territory settled into its warm and attentive night, Min-woo sat outside the camp perimeter and opened the Director's Cut to the Spirit Tribe section.
Three paragraphs. A sketch. *[Trial sequence — develop later.]*
He looked at those three words for a long time.
He had written them in a room in Seoul at a desk at eleven at night, working through the Elisia sections quickly because the Elisia sections were where his interest had flagged and he had planned to come back to them in revision. He had written *develop later* as a professional placeholder — the kind of note that meant *this matters but I don't know how yet.*
Later was tomorrow.
He thought about what the trial would show. The full picture — the Director's Cut and the screenplay and the twenty-eight days of management and deflection and chosen honesty and the things he had been afraid of and the things he had said anyway. The redirections. The gauze in the pocket. The shelf with her name on it. The coma. The vigil he had heard from the inside. The sacrifice he had been preparing for while being afraid of it.
All of it, visible.
He thought about Chae-won seeing all of it.
He was aware that this had been the thing he was most afraid of for twenty-eight days — not the trial's magical mechanics, not the Spirit Tribe's judgment, not the Author's Curse and its implications. The specific possibility of Chae-won seeing everything and deciding that the everything was too complicated, too managed, too much a product of a person who had started by seeing her as a character and had been learning, imperfectly and with significant delays, to see her as a person.
He sat with this fear in the Elisian night and examined it.
He thought about the supply corridor. About *I love you too.* About *I've known since day four. I was watching it become itself.* About the things she had said in the vigil that she did not know he had heard, which she had said anyway because they were true and she had wanted them said, and about the fact that when he had told her he had heard them she had said *good.*
He thought: *she has been seeing me for twenty-eight days. Not the character I was written to be. Me. The person who didn't know what to do with silence and ran past overload warnings and couldn't finish sentences and prepared things for her while pretending it was tactical.*
He thought: *she's already decided. The trial is not going to change what she's already decided.*
He thought: *then what am I afraid of?*
He sat with the question until it answered itself: nothing, now. He was not afraid of it anymore. He had been afraid of it for twenty-eight days and he had worked through the fear one honest conversation at a time and what was left on the other side of it was not the absence of fear but something that had more weight than fear and was pointing forward rather than backward.
He closed the Director's Cut.
He looked at the Elisian sky, which was full and warm and very far, and felt, for the first time since a contract signing at three in the morning in a different world, that he was exactly where he was supposed to be.
Not the script's supposed to be.
His own.
You've reached the end of this chapter
