The Spirit Tribe scout who approached him moved differently from the guardians in Gyeongbok Palace.
The guardians had been architectural — present as expression of space rather than as independent entities. The scout was discrete: a figure with the quality of someone who had been practicing presence for a long time and had achieved a version of it that was less like occupying space and more like being recognized by it. The Elisian morning light fell on the scout in the way it fell on the trees, which was to say that both seemed to receive it rather than be illuminated by it.
Min-woo stood still when the scout approached. He had been standing still for what the Director's Cut told him was approximately forty seconds, during which the scout had been conducting an assessment that was not physical and not verbal and was not, as far as he could tell, producing any external indicators of its progress. He was simply being looked at from the inside.
It was not comfortable.
It was not supposed to be comfortable.
He remained still and let the assessment happen and thought: *whatever you're looking for, I hope it's there.* He had meant this more abstractly when he had thought it the previous night. Standing in the Elisian morning with the scout's attention moving through him like light through a room, he meant it specifically: he hoped that what the scout found corresponded to what he understood himself to carry. He hoped the twenty-eight days had changed what was there enough that the contents were not a surprise to him when rendered visible.
The scout finished.
It said something in Elisian that the Director's Cut translated with its usual caveat — *approximate, non-literal rendering:* *"The companion who sees is more complicated than expected."*
The scout withdrew.
Min-woo stood for a moment in the space the scout had occupied and thought about the word *complicated.*
Chae-won, three meters away, was watching him with the expression she used for things she was filing. *"What does that mean?"*
*"I'm not certain,"* he said. Which was accurate. He had a theory about what it meant — that the system's complexity, the layers of knowing and management and chosen honesty and all twenty-eight days of it, had produced a reading that was more intricate than the scouts were accustomed to — but he was not certain.
*"Complicated-good or complicated-concerning?"* she asked.
*"I'll let you know after the trial,"* he said.
She held his gaze for a moment — the look that assessed whether he was managing the information or genuinely uncertain. She determined the latter and moved on.
---
The Director's Cut surfaced the full Author's Curse assessment at 11:17.
This was not a scheduled process. He had been running the system at passive collection — not processing, not projecting, not doing the analysis work — and the assessment had run itself, had reached its conclusions, had queued the results for delivery, and had delivered them in the specific form of a panel that appeared in his peripheral vision with the insistence of something that had decided it would not wait any longer to be read.
He was walking toward the mid-morning rest position when the panel appeared.
He kept walking. He did not stop because stopping would have been visible and he needed a moment with the information before it was visible. He walked to the rest position, sat down, and read the panel.
**[AUTHOR'S CURSE — FULL ASSESSMENT COMPLETE]** **Status: Active. Resolution required for world stability.** **Resolution mechanism: Return of the Director's Cut to Elisian narrative consciousness.** **Method: User must surrender the system voluntarily at the Curse's source point.** **Effect on User: Complete removal of Director's Cut capabilities. Permanent.** **Residual capabilities: Base human perception and pattern recognition. Standard.** **Timeline for resolution: Optimal window — 15-20 days from current date.** **Note: Failure to resolve within optimal window results in progressive world destabilization.**
He read this three times.
Not because the content was unclear — it was the clearest communication the Director's Cut had produced since day one, specific and without hedge. He read it three times because reading it three times was what you did when information changed the shape of the next twenty days in ways that needed to be processed.
The sacrifice was confirmed. The method was confirmed. The timeline was confirmed.
He had known the shape of this for a week. He had not known the specific contours — the fifteen-to-twenty day optimal window, the progressive destabilization consequence of waiting, the permanent nature of the removal. The shape had become a structure.
He sat with the structure.
He was still sitting with it when the Director's Cut added a secondary panel — not a separate process, a continuation of the assessment, the system apparently having more to tell him than he had read:
**[SECONDARY NOTE: The Spirit Tribe's trial assessment process has been initiated by User's territorial entry. The trial will read User's intent through the Director's Cut as conduit. The full Author's Curse assessment will be visible during this process — including the sacrifice requirement and User's psychological relationship to it.]**
*Including User's psychological relationship to it.*
He read this phrase three additional times.
The trial would show not only the sacrifice requirement but his relationship to it — including the weeks of fear, the delayed disclosure, the processing he had been doing alone before telling Chae-won, the parts he had managed rather than shared. All of it.
He was still processing this when the Spirit Tribe assessment activated.
---
It happened without warning and without ceremony — the Spirit Tribe did not announce its timing.
One moment he was sitting at the rest position in the Elisian morning with the full assessment panel in his peripheral vision, and the next moment the assessment was active: the magical reading that the Spirit Tribe deployed for the trial, which was not the preliminary scout assessment but the full version, the version that went deeper.
He had prepared for the trial. He had been preparing for days, had worked through his fear of it, had arrived at a version of himself that was ready to be seen. He was ready for the contents — for the Director's Cut and the screenplay and the twenty-eight days of management and honesty and the supply corridor and the things he carried for Chae-won and the sacrifice and all of it.
What he had not prepared for was the simultaneous activation.
The Spirit Tribe's assessment and the full Author's Curse analysis and the ninety-four-percent system running at maximum conduit capacity and the information he had been processing since 11:17 and the emotional weight of twenty-eight days all arrived in the same moment, all requiring the same processing capacity, all demanding the Director's Cut's full attention at the same instant.
The overload warning went from green to amber to orange to red in the time it took him to register it.
Then it went past red.
There was a moment — brief, specific, the kind of moment that is later described as *everything went white* but is actually more like *everything stopped being organized* — and then the Director's Cut was not running at ninety-four percent or at any percent.
It was not running.
Min-woo hit the ground.
---
He was aware of the ground, and then not aware of anything.
And then there was sound — far away, then closer, the ambient sound of the Spirit Tribe territory and people moving and someone's voice in a register he recognized as Jin-hyuk's operational register, calm and directing and managing a situation.
And closer than that, much closer, the specific quality of someone's presence that he recognized without the Director's Cut, without the Affection Gauge, without anything but the twenty-eight days of learning what her presence felt like.
She was beside him.
He knew this before he knew anything else — before the status of the system, before the status of the trial, before any of the operational picture. She was beside him. This was the first information he had and it was sufficient for a moment before the rest arrived.
The rest arrived.
System: offline. Director's Cut: in emergency recovery state. Estimated recovery time: unknown. The assessment: interrupted, incomplete, the Spirit Tribe's trial reading paused at the point of the overload. The rest of the party: stable. The territory: stable. The immediate threat level: zero.
Him: on the ground, conscious at the level of being aware of the ground and the territory and the presence beside him, not conscious at the level of being able to do anything about any of it.
He was aware of Chae-won's hand on his shoulder — not the practical medical assessment gesture, not the *check the patient* gesture. The staying gesture. The one that said: *I am here and I am not leaving.*
He was not leaving either.
He let the system run its recovery process and did not try to hurry it and thought, with the part of his mind that was still organizing information: *the trial did not complete. The Spirit Tribe saw something. I don't know what they saw. I don't know what Chae-won saw before the overload.*
He thought: *whatever they saw, they saw.*
He thought: *good.*
He thought nothing else for a while.
---
The camp the group established in Spirit Tribe territory had the quality of things built by people who have had practice at establishing camps quickly and under uncertain conditions. Jin-hyuk organized it. Min-woo was aware of this in the background — the sound of people moving with purpose, the specific efficient sounds of a camp being created — and was aware that it was being handled and that he did not need to manage it and that this was correct.
Chae-won did not leave his side.
He was aware of this with the clarity that unconscious people apparently had about the presences beside them — the warmth and the specific weight of her attention, which was not the clinical attention of medical assessment but something more sustained and more personal. She was there. She was going to remain there. He knew this the way he had learned to know her, in the direct perception that existed below the system's data.
The Spirit Tribe scouts appeared twice in the hours after — Min-woo was aware of them at the edges of his consciousness, the territory's magical attention shifting when they came and settling when they withdrew. They were observing. Not intervening. The permission to remain in the territory was holding.
Night arrived.
The party settled into the watches that camping in uncertain territory required. Jin-hyuk took the first. Two of his team members took the second and third. Chae-won remained where she was.
At some point — the Director's Cut was not running, he had no time data — she began to talk.
Not loudly. Not with the operational precision she brought to briefings, or the careful honesty she brought to the hard conversations, or the specific directness of the direct look. She talked the way people talked when they thought no one was measuring what they said — in the quiet voice of private things, offered to the Elisian night and to him and to no one and everyone all at once.
She talked about the architecture she would have built. About the structural survey textbooks she had read in the Hanseong compound after midnight, the chapters on adaptive reuse that she had memorized because she was going to need them and then had not been allowed to need them. She talked about what day four had looked like from her side — the trigger zone, finding the item in her pack, the way she had looked at his shoulder and understood something she had not been ready to name yet.
She talked about small things: the glasses. The way he adjusted them. The specific quality of the patrol maps that had always been on the corner table, which she had been pretending to read while thinking about other things. The thirty-seven expressions she had cataloged on his face while he was unconscious, of which the one at hour six was her favorite.
*"You looked like someone who had put something down and forgotten how heavy it was,"* she said.
He was not conscious at the level of responding. He was conscious at the level of hearing.
She talked for a while longer — the equation, what she had found the equation to look like, the specific answer to the question he had asked in the supply corridor on night eleven. *It looks like this,* she said. *Like Elisian territory and Jin-hyuk twenty feet away pretending not to hear me. Like twenty-seven days that I wouldn't remove. Even the ones you managed wrong.*
She paused.
*"That's what the equation looks like,"* she said. *"I wanted you to know."*
He lay in the Elisian night and heard all of it and thought that this was the most honest thing either of them had said to each other, in the specific way that things said in the dark when you think you're alone were always the most honest, and that he was going to have to decide what to do with having heard it.
He already knew what he was going to do.
He was going to tell her.
