The court summons arrived through Elisian formal channels at 7:09 in the morning, delivered by a Spirit Tribe border messenger who had been handed it at the zone's eastern boundary — which meant Park Sung-jin had been waiting for them to enter the scriptless zone before serving it, either because he had known they were going there or because he had been patient enough to wait until the moment most inconvenient for the service.
Min-woo read it through the Director's Cut's translation function and summarized it to the group in approximately forty seconds: formal Elisian court summons for the Saint, issued through the noble alliance, required response within five days, filed under the standing claim Park Sung-jin had entered after the kidnapping attempt. The court appearance it required would take one day travel to the court, one day of formal proceedings, one day return. Three days, minimum.
Three days from a window that had four to nine days remaining.
Combined with the three days to the Narrative Lock.
The margin existed but it was not comfortable.
*"Can we ignore it?"* Jin-hyuk asked. He asked this with the tone of someone who knew the answer and was asking anyway because the question deserved to be asked.
*"An unanswered summons becomes a default judgment,"* Chae-won said. *"In Elisian law, default judgment would give Park Sung-jin's claim formal standing. That's worse than appearing."*
*"So we appear,"* Jin-hyuk said.
*"We appear,"* she confirmed. She looked at the summons — at the formal Elisian script the Director's Cut had translated, at the specific phrasing that communicated Park Sung-jin's continued position in the court's proceedings. Then she looked at Min-woo. *"Are you ready for that?"*
He understood what she was asking. Not the tactical readiness — whether the court appearance itself was manageable. The other kind of readiness: the public acknowledgment, the formal entering of his name into the court record in the specific role the Spirit Tribe's recognition had established. The institutional version of the joined hands in the trial clearing.
*"Are you?"* he asked back.
---
She thought about it.
He watched her think about it — the specific process, not the armor's deflection but the genuine consideration of the question he had returned to her. He had asked it because it was correct to ask it: he had made assumptions about her readiness before, had managed her decisions under the assumption that he understood what she was prepared for, and had been wrong enough times that the assumption had lost its credibility.
Her readiness was not his to calculate.
*"Yes,"* she said. *"I've been ready for it longer than I've been willing to admit."*
*"When did that change?"*
She thought about this. *"The court room,"* she said. *"The Hanseong meeting. When I understood that the things I was not willing to admit were things I was not admitting because I was still operating from the assumption that people left — that admitting them would give them something to take with them when they went."* She paused. *"I stopped operating from that assumption some time ago. I just hadn't updated my behavior to match."*
*"Then,"* he said, *"we appear at court before the Lock. In the window."*
*"The timing is tight."*
*"Ours to manage."*
She looked at him — the expression that was specifically for the moments when he said back to her something she had said to him at an earlier point, the one that registered the callback and the reason for the callback and the fact that he had been listening that carefully. He had thirty-four entries in the catalog. This was the expression he had filed most often in the past week because she had been saying things worth hearing and he had been hearing them and using them.
*"Ours to manage,"* she confirmed.
---
Jin-hyuk organized the court approach in twenty minutes, which was how long Jin-hyuk took to organize things that required the kind of direct-action efficiency that was his specific competence. The route, the timing, the supply requirements, the formation for navigating through territory where the court's authority ran and where Park Sung-jin might attempt an intervention before the formal proceedings.
*"You two figure out what you're wearing,"* Jin-hyuk said, at the end of the twenty minutes. He said it with the real smile.
Min-woo looked at his jacket — the one with the Elisian thread at the shoulder, stronger than the original, courtesy of day seventeen and someone who noticed things and attended to them quietly. The rest of it was in reasonable condition. The rest of him was in less reasonable condition for formal Elisian court: wrong clothes, wrong presentation for the specific role the Spirit Tribe's sanction had assigned him.
*"I don't have appropriate court attire,"* he said.
*"I know,"* Chae-won said. *"I've been thinking about that."*
This was, he realized, not a new thought for her. She had been thinking about the court appearance since the Spirit Tribe's recognition — which meant she had been thinking about him appearing at court as her recognized companion, in the public-record sense, in the institutional-acknowledgment sense, for at least two days.
He thought about what that meant and filed it.
---
The solution she had been thinking about was practical and Elisian and had been sourced through the Spirit Tribe's settlement network before they left.
He put it on in the camp's private space — not the Finance Center's worn jacket and the Seoul dungeon's accumulated practical modifications, but something that belonged to the place they were in: Elisian textile, the kind that responded to its wearer's presence rather than simply covering it, cut in the formal register that the recognized companion of a Saint required for court appearance. It fit with the specific precision of something that had been made for a person who had been described to the maker in enough detail that the description was accurate.
He came back to the main camp.
Chae-won looked at him.
He looked at her looking at him.
She said nothing for a moment. Then: *"That works."* In the tone she used for things she had assessed and found correct.
*"You described me to whoever made this,"* he said.
*"The Spirit Tribe settlement has craftspeople,"* she said. *"I gave them the relevant parameters."*
*"Including—"*
*"Including the glasses,"* she said. *"The frame style. They made a case."*
He looked down. There was, in the new jacket's inner pocket, a glasses case — Elisian-made, the same textile, fitted. He opened it. Inside: a spare pair, thin-framed, the correct prescription, the correct right-arm angle.
He stood with this for a moment.
*"Day thirty-four,"* he said.
*"You've been adjusting that arm since day six,"* she said. *"It seemed worth addressing."*
He put the spare pair in the case and the case in the inner pocket and thought about the count — the jacket stitching and the gauze and the original glasses and the briefing document and the shelf and all of it — and thought that the count was not one-directional, had never been one-directional, and that he had been so focused on what he was doing for her that he had not fully understood, until recently, the full scope of what she had been doing for him.
*"Thank you,"* he said.
*"The previous pair has a cracked lens,"* she said. *"You've been managing with it for some time."*
*"I had forgotten about the crack,"* he said.
*"I know,"* she said. *"You tend to manage with things until they're replaced. I've been keeping track."*
---
The evening before the court departure was warm.
They had completed the day's mapping work — Chae-won's structural reading of the scriptless zone's disruption pattern had produced a model of the Narrative Lock's mechanism that was more precise than anything the Director's Cut had generated, which was a specific kind of demonstration that he was still absorbing. She read systems in a way he did not read systems. It was different from his reading. It was also, he was learning, equally accurate. In the overlap between their two kinds of reading there was something more complete than either alone.
He was sitting outside the camp's edge — the position he used for thinking that was not organized around a specific problem — when she came and sat beside him.
Not with space between them.
The adjustment she had been making since the supply corridor, the one that had been gradually changing the geometry of how they occupied shared space, resolved into something simpler in the Elisian evening: she leaned against him.
Not dramatically — the small, specific adjustment of someone who had decided to do a thing and was doing it with the same directness she brought to everything else. Her shoulder against his. Her weight, slightly, redistributed toward him. A thing she had decided to allow.
He adjusted to accommodate her.
Not a big adjustment — the minor shift of someone for whom this was the natural configuration rather than a new one. He made the space she had moved into without making a production of the making.
They sat like this.
The Elisian evening moved through its stages — the light changing quality, the scriptless zone's particular version of the territory settling into its nighttime expression, the camp behind them running on its established routines.
Neither of them spoke.
This was the quiet that was theirs — the one that had been developing since day ten on a rooftop in hybrid Seoul, that had accumulated through twenty-four days of sitting beside each other in corridors and at corner tables and in the specific geography of two people who had stopped performing the distance they had originally maintained. It was the silence of people who had found what they needed to say and had said it and were now in the space that existed after the saying.
At some point Jin-hyuk walked past the camp's edge, registered the configuration, and walked on without comment.
At some point the Elisian night completed its arrival.
At some point she said: *"Tomorrow."*
*"Tomorrow,"* he said.
She straightened and stood with the specific ease of someone who has been where they needed to be and is now returning to the practical requirements. He stood beside her.
*"The court appearance,"* she said. *"Then the Lock."*
*"In the window."*
*"Ours to manage,"* she said, for the third time, and the phrase had become — in its repetitions, in the specific way it had been returned across the distance of several days and several significant conversations — not a tactical assessment but something that belonged to them, the shorthand of two people who had agreed on the most important thing and were reminding each other of it when it was relevant.
*"Ours,"* he said.
She went to prepare for tomorrow.
He stayed at the camp's edge a moment longer, looking at the scriptless zone in the Elisian night — the part of the world that existed outside his writing, that was Elisia's own, that had been here before he arrived and would be here after, and which he had been navigating for three days with nothing but his own sight and had found, in the navigating, sufficient.
The spare glasses case was in the inner pocket of the court jacket.
He thought about what it meant to be with someone who kept track of the cracked lenses and the adjusted arms and the thirty-three expressions and the weight of what was carried and the Elisian thread stronger than the original.
He thought: *the count is not the catalog I've been keeping. The count is both of ours, going in both directions.*
He thought: *I've been counting her. She's been counting me.*
He thought: *the total is larger than I knew.*
