The Elisian royal court was exactly as Min-woo had written it and almost entirely unlike what he had imagined.
The architecture was correct — the medieval-adjacent fantasy aesthetic, the scale that communicated the weight of institutional history, the specific organization of space that existed in places where power had been exercised for long enough that the space had adapted to the exercise. He had written *[Elisian court: medieval-adjacent fantasy aesthetic, political intrigue, royal hierarchy]* and had been accurately descriptive of the surfaces.
He had not written the air.
The air in the Elisian royal court carried information the way the Spirit Tribe territory's air carried information — not obviously, not as data the Director's Cut could parse with clean labels, but as something you absorbed through proximity, the accumulated weight of countless significant things having happened in this space. The court's history was in the air. You breathed it and you knew, without knowing specifically, that you were in a place where a great deal had been decided.
Min-woo breathed it and thought: *I wrote this place in a day. A single working day, the worldbuilding session where I roughed out the political landscape. I gave it a paragraph.*
He thought: *a paragraph.*
He thought: *I understand now why revision exists.*
---
Chae-won moved through the court with the precision of someone who had spent twenty-two years in rooms that operated on the same principles as this one — different vocabulary, same grammar. The grammar was: power moved through specific channels and was communicated through specific signals and the signals were legible to anyone who had been taught to read them. She had been taught to read them since before she could read language.
Min-woo had not been taught to read them.
He read the room instead.
This was different from reading the grammar — the grammar was the institutional language, the learned behavior of people operating within a specific power system. The room was the people in the system and what they were actually doing underneath the grammar, which was different and more informative. He had been reading rooms since before the Reality Glitch, since before the screenplay, since he had understood that the most useful skill a writer could develop was not the ability to construct a scene but the ability to understand one.
The court's reception of the Saint's party communicated several things simultaneously, which was how formal political spaces always communicated: the Spirit Tribe's recognition was acknowledged with the specific weight it carried in Elisian legal hierarchy, which was considerable; Park Sung-jin's alliance shifted and recalibrated visibly in response to that acknowledgment; the court's neutral parties assessed the incoming party for information about the balance of the current political situation.
Min-woo read all of this in approximately ninety seconds.
Chae-won, he was certain, had read it in thirty.
---
Park Sung-jin's opening move came forty minutes into the formal reception period.
It was correct. Min-woo would acknowledge this — the move was the correct move in the situation, the one that Elisian court protocol provided for and that a person who had studied the protocol would use. A formal request for the Saint to acknowledge the pending claim before the full court, delivered through the court's procedural machinery, requiring acknowledgment or default.
Min-woo was watching Park Sung-jin deliver it.
He was also watching Chae-won receive it.
And he was watching the full court receive the moment of watching Chae-won receive it, which was the more informative observation: the court's assessment of a person could be read in how they responded to a challenge in public, and what the court was currently reading in Chae-won's response was something that had nothing to do with the Hanseong name or the Saint's designation or the Spirit Tribe's sanction.
It was reading: *this is someone who has encountered many rooms like this one and is not surprised by any of them.*
Chae-won responded.
He watched her respond and thought: *I wrote her as a strong female lead with political acumen and a complicated relationship to institutional power. I wrote her as someone who would perform well in this kind of setting.*
He thought: *performing well and doing what she is doing are different things.*
What she was doing was not performing — was not even primarily strategic, though the strategy was there and it was correct. What she was doing was the thing she did in every significant room she entered: she understood the system at the level of its principles, not its surface rules, and operated from the principles. Park Sung-jin had studied the rules. She had understood why the rules existed and was using that understanding.
She was better at this than he was.
He had written her as better at this than he was. He was glad the writing had been accurate.
---
The formal closing of the claim happened at the two-hour mark.
The court recorder's voice in Elisian formal register, which the Director's Cut translated with the full fluency it had been building for four days of Elisian immersion: *The Saint Han Chae-won, present before this court, acknowledges the pending claim filed by the noble Park Sung-jin and responds as follows...*
And then the response, which Chae-won delivered in Elisian — not perfectly, her Elisian was two weeks old, but with the correct formal register and the specific legal phrasing the Spirit Tribe's advisors had provided before the court appearance, and with the authority of someone who had been speaking in institutional rooms for most of her adult life.
The response closed the claim.
Not challenged it — closed it, through the specific legal mechanism that Elisian court procedure allowed for: a recognized Saint with Spirit Tribe sanction and established standing declining a claim filed against an unrecognized status. The claim required the Saint to lack standing. She had standing. The claim had no basis.
And then, at the end of the legal response, the part that required the court recorder to acknowledge:
*The Saint's recognized companion, sanctioned by the Spirit Tribe of Elisia, is herein entered into court record: Kang Min-woo.*
The court recorder said his name.
Min-woo stood in the Elisian royal court and heard his name said in formal Elisian register and was entered into the court's record in the role the Spirit Tribe's recognition had established.
He had never had a title before.
He thought about how he had expected that to feel — the weight of it, the significance of it, the specific quality of a person who has spent their whole life being a nobody in whatever room they were in having their name entered into a formal record as something.
It felt, he discovered, like accuracy.
Not elevation. Not arrival at something he had not had before. Accuracy — the specific feeling of a word being applied correctly to a thing it described.
He was the recognized companion. That was what he was. The record was correct.
---
The social period after the formal business had the quality of all social periods after formal business in institutional settings: the protocol relaxed into something that communicated the same information the formal business had communicated, but through different channels — conversation rather than procedure, proximity rather than precedent.
Chae-won navigated it the way she navigated all social spaces: efficiently, with the specific attention of someone who was doing multiple things simultaneously and making each of them appear to be the primary thing.
Min-woo found his position at the edge of the room.
Some things did not change.
She found him there — not at the end of the social period but midway through, carving twenty minutes out of the navigation to stand beside him in the way they stood beside each other, which was different from the way they stood beside other people and was visible as different to anyone paying attention.
*"You've been reading the room,"* she said.
*"I have nothing else here."*
*"That's not nothing."* She looked at the court around them — the politics moving through the social period's channels, the alliances being communicated and the challenges being registered and the old institutional machinery doing what it had been doing for a very long time. *"What do you see?"*
He told her.
The two parties that wanted her attention for different reasons — one that had been neutral and was considering realignment, one that had been Park Sung-jin's ally and was reconsidering its position in light of the claim's closure. The person who was not supposed to be in this room and was, who was from the Hanseong corporate network and was watching rather than approaching, who would report the court appearance's outcome to the family's Elisian representative by nightfall. The fault line in the noble alliance that the claim's closure had widened, which would produce a political realignment in the next two to three weeks that would be manageable.
She listened.
When he finished, she said: *"I've been building the same picture."*
*"Same conclusions?"*
*"Same principals, slightly different emphases."* She paused. *"The person from Hanseong — your read is correct. I've identified two additional ones who are reporting to different family factions. We should compare notes on which faction is most active in Elisia before we leave."*
He thought: *she has three observations I have two of. I have two she hasn't noted yet. Together we have the full picture.*
He thought: *this is what together looks like in an institutional setting.*
He thought: *I want to keep doing this.*
---
The banquet that followed the social period was the formal meal that Elisian court protocol required, which meant he was seated as recognized companion in the position that role occupied in the seating arrangement, which meant he was beside her.
The person to his other side was a Elisian noble of middle rank whose name the Director's Cut provided and whose position in the political landscape Min-woo had noted during the room-reading. The noble attempted conversation in Elisian. Min-woo responded through the Director's Cut's translation assistance — slower than natural conversation, with the specific quality of someone managing the lag between hearing and understanding and responding, which was the quality of someone navigating an unfamiliar language honestly rather than pretending fluency.
The noble found this, apparently, interesting rather than off-putting. They had a functional conversation about the scriptless zone's geography, which the noble had thoughts about, and Min-woo learned three pieces of information about Elisian political geography that the Director's Cut's data hadn't contained.
He would have found the conversation more engaging if he had not been simultaneously aware, in the specific peripheral awareness that came from thirty-four days of learning a person's presence, that Chae-won beside him was not smiling.
She was not smiling the way she specifically chose not to smile when something was making it difficult not to.
He filed this as expression thirty-five.
He continued the conversation with the noble.
He did not acknowledge the not-smiling directly because acknowledging it would make it worse and he had thirty-four days of learning which things to acknowledge and which to let exist in their own space.
Later, when the banquet had concluded and the party was moving toward the night's accommodation that the Spirit Tribe's court liaison had arranged:
*"The noble,"* she said.
*"Yes?"*
*"You were doing very well."*
*"I was managing."*
*"You were doing very well,"* she said. *"And then he asked you about the Spirit Tribe's trial and you explained it in terms of architectural metaphor because you were thinking about the settlement structures we've been studying and the metaphor worked better than the actual description would have."*
*"The metaphor was more accurate,"* he said.
*"It was,"* she agreed. *"That's what expression thirty-five was."*
He looked at her.
*"The not-smiling one,"* she said. *"You knew what it was."*
*"I knew what it was."*
*"I've been counting too,"* she said. *"I told you."*
He thought about the total. About the count going in both directions. About what it meant that she had been filing him in the same way he had been filing her — not through a system, not through an interface, through the direct perception of someone who had decided that a specific person was worth paying that quality of attention to.
*"What's your count?"* he asked.
She thought about it. *"I stopped numbering them,"* she said. *"I keep them differently than you do. You catalog. I just — remember."*
*"All of them?"*
*"All of them."*
He thought about thirty-four days of expressions he had cataloged with numbers and entries and descriptions, and about the alternative methodology of simply remembering, and thought that her approach was probably more accurate than his because the numbers were a structure he had built to contain something that existed before and outside the structure.
*"Tell me one,"* he said.
She thought for a moment.
*"Day one,"* she said. *"The stairwell. You said 'east stairwell, forty seconds' and your voice was completely steady and your hands were shaking and you were being steady on purpose and I noticed the difference."*
He had not known she had noticed that.
He thought about day one and the stairwell and the hands he had been certain were not visibly shaking.
*"I didn't know you saw that,"* he said.
*"Day one,"* she said. *"I've been keeping them since day one."*
