The supermarket had been called Mega Mart, which was the kind of name that suggested its designers had wanted to convey scale without specificity, and it occupied the ground and basement floors of a commercial block three streets west of the Finance Center. Before the Reality Glitch it had sold everything a large urban supermarket sells: food and cleaning products and seasonal items and the small domestic objects that people bought while buying food because they were there and the price was acceptable.
Now it sold, primarily, risk.
Min-woo had identified it on day three through a combination of screenplay knowledge and minimap analysis — it was the location he had written as the group's first major resupply opportunity, positioned at the narrative point where the ensemble needed to demonstrate its collective capability before the escalation of the Gyeongbok arc. He had left it alone until the group was large enough and stable enough to raid it effectively, which it now was.
Chae-won briefed the plan at six in the morning. The group had grown to twenty-six people — three more arrivals in the last two days — and the briefing had the quality of a system that had learned itself: people knew their roles, knew the communication protocols, knew Chae-won's shorthand for retreat and advance and hold. Min-woo had built this over five days through the small adjustments of someone who understood how groups worked; she had built it by being someone people naturally organized themselves around.
Both things were true. Neither of them had done it alone.
---
The first forty minutes of the raid went precisely as planned.
The ground floor had six creature contacts, all within the expected parameters, all handled efficiently by the three combat-capable team members Chae-won had positioned at the flanks. Min-woo navigated from the back of the group, the Director's Cut running warm and accurate, the minimap giving him creature positions three seconds ahead of contact. The scene panel noted this was a standard resupply sequence — narrative function: resource acquisition, group bonding — and predicted a clean extraction with minor complications.
The minor complications arrived in the form of the ceiling.
The section above aisle seven had been partially compromised by whatever force had transformed the building's upper floors into the dungeon-adjacent space they now were, and the weight of the shelving unit that had been resting against the wall for six days found, in the vibration of the combat sequence in the adjacent aisle, the precise threshold it had been approaching. Min-woo saw it happen in the minimap data — a structural signature shifting from *stable* to *critical* in under three seconds — and he was already moving when it went.
The ceiling section came down with the particular violence of things that have been waiting to fall.
He was beside her. He was beside her because he had been beside her for the last twenty minutes, navigating from her position, and he was beside her because the Director's Cut had shown him the structural signature and his body had processed it three seconds before his conscious mind had, and the result was that when the section came down he was already there.
He pushed her.
Not elegantly — there was no elegant version of two people and a falling ceiling. He got his hands on her shoulders and drove her sideways and to the left with everything he had, and they went down together, and the ceiling section hit the floor exactly where she had been standing with a sound like a decision.
For a moment they were both on the floor in aisle seven, and the dust was settling, and Min-woo was half over her with one hand on the cold linoleum and the other braced against the shelf unit they had hit, and the space between them was less than it had ever been.
She was looking up at him.
He was looking down at her.
The Affection Gauge appeared and disappeared so quickly he wasn't certain he had seen it.
*"Your glasses,"* she said.
He became aware, at this point, of two things: that his glasses were not on his face, and that there was a specific quality in the way she said *your glasses* that was not the same as the way she said most things. It had a different register. He couldn't identify it precisely, which was unusual.
He found his glasses on the floor beside them — one lens cracked, hairline fracture running corner to corner. He put them on. The world through the right lens was divided into two slightly offset versions of itself.
*"Still functional,"* he said.
*"They're cracked,"* she said.
*"Cracked is still functional. As long as I can see."*
She looked at him through the cracked lens, or rather she looked at him and he looked at her through the cracked lens, and the moment lasted slightly longer than the situation required. She was close enough that he could see the fine detail of her expression, which was doing something he didn't have a category for: not the assessment look, not the armor, not the almost-smile he had filed away from day two. Something newer. Something that had not been there in any of their previous encounters.
He got up first. She was already pushing herself upright as he moved, and he did not offer his hand because she did not require it, and they both stood in the dust of aisle seven and the ceiling that had been above them was now beside them and neither of them said anything about the eleven seconds on the floor.
---
The raid continued.
This was the thing about Chae-won: she did not let things interrupt operations. Whatever was happening internally — and Min-woo, without the Affection Gauge, without the scene panel, using only his own observation — got the sense that something was happening — it did not surface. She led the second half of the raid with the same quality of attention she brought to everything, and the hidden storage room they found in the sub-basement was a genuine Easter Egg, and the elite creature guarding it was a genuine threat, and the standoff at the end of the aisle was a genuine decision point.
He was aware of her watching him. Not tracking — *watching.* The pattern-recognition mode that the Affection Gauge had reported, but manifesting differently now, with a quality of attention that was less analytical and more something else he was having difficulty categorizing. She watched him the way you watch something you are deciding about, and he watched her watch him and said nothing.
The elite creature required both of them.
Standing in the aisle with the creature between them and the storage room door, Min-woo ran the geometry. The door opened inward. The creature's attack pattern favored a forward press with the right side dominant. The approach required someone to draw the right-side strike and someone to approach from the left rear quadrant, and the person drawing the strike would be in the direct attack vector.
*"I'll take the right side,"* Chae-won said.
*"I'll do it,"* Min-woo said.
She looked at him. *"You don't have combat stats."*
*"I have three seconds."*
*"If the timing is off—"*
*"It won't be,"* he said, and she stopped, and the thing that stopped her was not the words — the words were the same words he had used in the chapter three encounter, the same assertion of precision. What stopped her was something in his face, which he was aware of being unable to control in that moment, something that was more than tactical confidence and which she read in the specific way she read him.
She let him take the position.
He did not examine what it meant that she let him.
The creature fell in forty seconds. The storage room had enough supplies to double their current inventory. Chae-won cataloged the contents with the methodical attention of someone who found logistics genuinely satisfying, and Min-woo leaned against the storage room wall and watched the Director's Cut note that the scene had been completed without NPC casualty and updated the probability assessments accordingly, and he thought that the update in the probabilities should feel more significant than it did.
What he was actually thinking about was the eleven seconds in aisle seven.
---
The group extracted without further incident.
The walk back to the Finance Center took twenty minutes, and Min-woo spent it at the back of the group as usual, and Chae-won spent it at the front as usual, and the usual arrangement had a different texture today that he was careful not to examine too closely.
He was three steps into the Finance Center lobby when she appeared beside him.
Not from the front of the group — she had moved back through the crowd with the efficiency of someone who had decided something and was implementing it before she reconsidered. She was holding something: a pair of glasses in a thin, wire frame, the kind he wore but uncleaned, the right lens clear.
*"There was an optical shop on the second block of the return route,"* she said. *"I sent someone in while you were helping with the heavy crates."*
Min-woo looked at the glasses. Looked at her. *"How did you know my prescription?"*
*"I pay attention,"* she said. A pause. *"You were reading the patrol map at a distance of approximately forty centimeters yesterday, and you tilted it to your left eye. Mild astigmatism, right side. The frame style is what you prefer — you've adjusted the ones you have three times since I've known you, the right arm specifically."*
He had adjusted the right arm of his current pair. He had done it automatically, a habit, the gesture he used when thinking. He had not been aware anyone had noticed.
*"You've been paying attention,"* he said.
*"I said that."*
*"To my glasses."*
*"To patterns,"* she said, and there was something in the word — not quite deflection, not quite acknowledgment, the exact middle ground she occupied when she was being honest in a way that maintained deniability. *"You have a number of patterns. Your glasses are one of them."*
He took the glasses from her hand. The frame was cold from being carried in her jacket pocket. He put them on — clean lens, correct frame, the right arm at exactly the angle he would have adjusted it to — and the world resolved into a single sharp image without offset.
*"Thank you,"* he said.
She was already turning to go. *"The patrol update will need revision by tonight. The route data we collected changes the eastern perimeter assessment."*
*"I'll have it done by eight."*
She nodded and walked toward the stairwell. He watched her go the way you watch something that has just done something unexpected — not stopped by it, but noting it, filing it in the part of him that was outside the screenplay.
---
That evening, alone in the corner of the conference room that had become his workspace, Min-woo updated the patrol routes and supply inventory and five other items that needed updating, and then sat with the completed work in front of him and the new glasses on his face and thought about what it meant that she had noticed the way he adjusted the right arm.
He thought about this for approximately twelve minutes.
Then he opened the Affection Gauge.
He had told himself earlier in the day that he was done opening it — that it was a tool for assessing threats and assets and the reading of it was distorting his judgment in ways that were becoming functionally significant. He had told himself this and he had meant it.
He opened it anyway.
**AFFECTION GAUGE — HAN CHAE-WON** **Current State: UNCLASSIFIED [TRANSITIONAL]** **Psychological note: Subject has moved beyond standard threat/asset assessment. New category required. System recalibrating categorization framework.** **Emotional valence: POSITIVE — confirmed, direction established** **Trust threshold: MET**
He read *trust threshold: met* twice.
Five days. Five days from *unknown* to *trust threshold met.* The screenplay had put this moment at chapter twelve, had written the trust establishment as a slow process built through crisis and shared experience and the accumulated weight of proved reliability. He had budgeted twelve chapters for it and she had done it in five days, and he did not know what to do with that.
He did not know what to do with any of it.
*UNCLASSIFIED [TRANSITIONAL].* The system needed a new category for what she was doing. He thought that was accurate. He did not have a category for it either.
He closed the Affection Gauge.
He sat in the conference room with the new glasses on his face and the patrol map in front of him and the supply list to his left and thought: *this is a problem,* in the tone of voice he used internally for problems that were actually very large and had not yet decided to announce themselves fully.
Then he picked up the patrol map and went back to work, because work was a thing he understood and could finish, and the other thing was neither of those.
