Min-woo had a system for the nights.
The days were manageable — the days had structure, had the creature data and supply logistics and group management and the ongoing project of steering events along a path that would keep everyone alive long enough for Jin-hyuk to arrive and the Gyeongbok arc to begin. The days had things to do, and he was good at having things to do. He had been good at it since he was twenty-two and discovered that having things to do was a highly effective substitute for having things to feel.
The nights were different.
The group slept in shifts — two people awake at all times for perimeter monitoring, the rest arranged across the conference level in the improvised sleeping arrangements of people who had accepted that comfort was a suspended category. Min-woo kept the late watch, two to six in the morning, because it gave him time to run the Director's Cut through its nightly diagnostics, update the scene projections, recalibrate the minimap against the day's creature movement data. Work, in other words. The kind of work that required all of his attention and left none over for anything else.
This had been working well.
On the ninth night, it stopped working.
---
The problem was chapter four.
He had found it at 1:47 in the morning, running a systematic cross-reference between the screenplay's projected events and the current deviation map he had been building since day one. The deviation map tracked every point where the story had drifted from its original trajectory — his survival through chapter three, the food cache timing, the trust development that was running eight chapters ahead of schedule — and assigned each deviation a probability weight for downstream consequences.
Chapter four of the screenplay was the Gyeongbok Gate sequence.
He had written chapter four with a specific catalyst: a Hanseong-level threat, large enough to require the full ensemble's capabilities, that would serve as the first real test of the group's cohesion and Chae-won and Jin-hyuk's joint effectiveness. The threat was a scripted event — a dungeon-generated phenomenon tied to the Gyeongbok narrative — but the conditions for its activation were environmental rather than character-specific. They were already present. Had been present for three days.
Which meant the Gyeongbok threat was not waiting for Jin-hyuk's arrival. It was waiting for the dungeon's internal clock, which the Director's Cut was now giving him:
**GYEONGBOK GATE EVENT: INITIATION PROJECTED** **ETA: 36-48 hours** **Note: This event requires Jin-hyuk for original scripted resolution. Jin-hyuk arrival: 72+ hours. Gap: 24-36 hours.**
He read the gap twice.
A twenty-four to thirty-six hour window during which a dungeon event he had written to require Jin-hyuk would occur without Jin-hyuk. He had written the event to be survivable only with the specific capability set the Original Male Lead brought to it. Without that capability set, the survival probability for the current group was significantly lower than the screenplay's intent.
This was the thought he was holding, at 1:47 in the morning, in the low red light of the conference room, when Chae-won appeared.
---
She did not announce herself. She rarely did — she moved through spaces with the quality of someone who had grown up in environments where drawing attention to yourself was a liability, and this extended to entrances and exits. One moment the chair beside him was empty. Then it wasn't.
*"You're not on watch,"* he said.
*"Couldn't sleep,"* she said. She sat with her legs crossed and her back straight, the posture she maintained even in informal contexts, and looked at him with the particular alertness of someone who has been lying awake for an hour and has given up on the pretense of rest.
Then she looked at his expression.
He was aware that his expression was doing something it should not be doing, which was communicating. He had spent a significant portion of his adult life developing a face that did not communicate — the baseline flatness of someone who observed and recorded and did not react — and it had served him well for years. What he was currently experiencing, at 1:47 in the morning with a twenty-four-to-thirty-six-hour problem in front of him and Chae-won sitting close enough that he could see the precise quality of her attention, was the face failing.
*"What did you find?"* she asked.
Not *are you okay.* Not *what's wrong.* Straight to the information, because she had read his face and understood that the information was the thing that mattered.
He considered his options for approximately four seconds.
*"A gap,"* he said. *"In the timeline. Something is going to happen before we're ready for it."*
*"How long do we have?"*
*"Thirty-six hours at the outside. Possibly as few as twenty-four."*
She was quiet, processing. *"What is it?"*
*"A dungeon event. Larger than what we've handled so far. It will be centered on the Gyeongbok Palace area."* He paused. *"We're not at full capacity for it."*
*"What capacity are we missing?"*
This was the question. The one he had been avoiding since 1:47, because the honest answer was *the Original Male Lead,* which was not something he could say, and the next honest answer was *someone with Jin-hyuk's specific power set,* which would require explaining how he knew that.
*"A heavy combat specialist,"* he said. *"Someone who can anchor the front line and absorb sustained pressure while the rest of us manage flanks and support. Chae-won,"* — he used her name deliberately, which he did not often do, and she registered it — *"the encounter is designed around a specific power distribution. We don't have it."*
She was quiet for a moment. *"And you've known this was coming."*
Not a question. A statement of what she had already concluded.
*"I identified the probability two days ago,"* he said. *"The certainty came tonight."*
*"And you were managing it."*
*"I was working on solutions."*
*"That's not what I said."*
He met her eyes. The conference room was very quiet — the kind of quiet that only existed in the hours before dawn, when even the creatures seemed to pause between movements. She was looking at him with an expression that was not accusation and not disappointment, something more like the look she wore when she had reached the end of her patience with a thing and was deciding to name it directly.
*"You're managing me,"* she said.
*"Yes,"* he said.
The admission surprised him as he made it. He had expected to deflect — had prepared several deflections — and instead had said yes, because she was sitting a meter away in the middle of the night looking at him with the directness of someone who had earned the truth, and the deflections felt like a further failure of something he was already failing at.
*"Because the full picture would change how you act,"* he continued, *"and how you act affects the outcome."*
*"And you've already decided what the outcome should be."*
*"I've decided what the outcome needs to be."*
A silence. Not hostile — the silence of two people sitting with an honest exchange and not rushing to cover it with the next thing.
*"And what does the outcome need to be?"* she asked.
*"Everyone survives the Gyeongbok event."* A pause. *"And then the things that come after it."*
*"That's a large outcome to be managing."*
*"It's the only one I'm interested in."*
Another silence. She looked at the table — at the patrol maps and supply lists and the accumulated paper evidence of nine days of careful navigation — and then back at him.
*"Tell me everything,"* she said. *"Not the managed version. The actual version."*
---
He told her most of it.
Not all of it — not the screenplay, not the Director's Cut, not *I am a character in a story I wrote and I should have died six days ago.* Those were truths he would need longer to approach, from different angles, and this was not the moment for them.
But he told her what he knew about how he knew things: that he had access to information about this world that he could not fully explain, that it had come to him at the same moment the Reality Glitch hit, that it manifested as pattern recognition and predictive modeling that was more accurate than standard analysis would allow. He told her he was not psychic and not simply very good at logistics. He told her the information had limits — that they were already past some of them, that the further they moved from the original scenario the less reliable his foreknowledge became.
He told her about the Gyeongbok event. About the gap. About what the gap required.
She listened in the way she listened to tactical briefings: completely, without interrupting, the kind of attention that is building a structure as it receives information. When he finished she was quiet for a moment.
*"So you're not a genius,"* she said.
*"No."*
*"You're someone who did his homework."*
*"In a specific and unusual way."*
*"But homework."* She looked at him. Not surprised — she had already decided he was not what he appeared to be, and what he had told her was within the range of what she had been prepared for. *"I can work with that."*
He looked at her. *"That's all you have to say about it?"*
*"What would you like me to say?"*
*"Most people would—"*
*"I'm not most people,"* she said, without any particular emphasis, the way you state a fact that doesn't require emphasis. *"You have information. The information is accurate — I've verified it against observable reality for nine days. The method by which you obtained it is unusual. The method doesn't change the accuracy."* A pause. *"What I want to know is what we do about the gap."*
Min-woo looked at her for a long moment.
In seven years of writing scripts, he had written this scene a dozen times in a dozen variations: the moment of revelation, the confrontation, the reaction. He had written it as anger and as betrayal and as relief and as the opening of something new. He had always, in every version, written the revelation as a thing that made the room feel different — more charged, more complicated, the air heavier with new information.
The room did not feel heavier. It felt, if anything, lighter — the specific lightness of a weight that has been set down.
She was looking at the patrol maps. *"Tell me the gap requirements. What does the front line anchor need to do?"*
He told her. They worked until four in the morning.
---
When she finally left to take the morning watch, Min-woo sat alone and opened the screenplay in his mind one more time.
He looked at today. Looked for this scene — the 1:47 confession, the managed version, the not-quite-all-of-it truth — in the text he had written.
Nothing.
He was so far outside the screenplay now that there was no scene to look at. He was navigating without a map, in the most literal sense, and the Gyeongbok event was ahead of him and the gap was real and Jin-hyuk was still three days out and he did not know, for the first time since the Reality Glitch, what the next page said.
He wrote in the margin:
*She took the truth better than any version I wrote.*
Then, below it:
*I've been writing for other people for so long I forgot what it felt like to say a true thing to a real person.*
He looked at what he had written for a while.
Then he went to take over the morning watch, and the sun came up wrong over the wrong Seoul, and he thought that even the wrong version was, in some of its angles, very beautiful.
