The moon had begun to swell again, and Shadowfall Citadel felt the change in it before Valeria ever saw the shape of it in the sky.
She noticed the shift first in the servants -- a slight tightening around the eyes, a quickening in the pace of everyone's footsteps, as though the whole fortress had begun quietly bracing itself for something it never spoke of aloud in daylight. She noticed it second in the kitchens, where the meals sent to Alaric's private hall grew heartier, richer in iron and blood-red root vegetables, as though someone were trying to fortify him against a hunger no ordinary food could satisfy. And she noticed it, most of all, in Alaric himself.
There was, she had come to realize over her first two weeks in the citadel, an entire silent language spoken here around the subject of the moon -- a language of averted eyes and quietly rearranged schedules, of guards who requested reassignment away from the lower cells during certain nights without ever stating why, of a physician who kept careful ledgers of tinctures and compounds that all, ultimately, failed to matter once the true transformation began. No one spoke the word curse aloud in the daylight corridors of Shadowfall. They spoke instead in euphemism, in careful silences, in the particular held breath of people who had learned that acknowledging a monster too directly sometimes seemed to invite it closer.
Valeria had never had the luxury of euphemism where her own suffering was concerned. Twelve years of poison had taught her that naming a thing precisely was the only way to ever hope to master it, and she found herself, watching the citadel brace itself for another cycle of dread, growing increasingly impatient with the collective silence surrounding a suffering she suspected no one here had ever truly tried to solve rather than simply survive.
He had begun calling her something other than a designation two days ago -- a small thing, barely worth remarking on, except that she had spent twelve years cataloguing every syllable anyone had ever used to address her, and she noticed the absence of the old cruelty in his voice immediately. "You," he had started saying, when he forgot to use her name outright, spoken with a careful, deliberate respect entirely unlike the flat ownership the old designation had once carried. It was not her name. It was not, either, the cold weight of the ledger entry. It sat somewhere new between the two, and she found herself paying close attention to the shift the way she paid attention to every small change in the men who held power over her -- searching for what it meant, and finding, to her quiet unease, that she was beginning to hope it meant something good.
"You've stopped calling me by the title," she said to him, on the morning she finally decided to test the shape of the change directly. "I noticed two days ago. I've been waiting to see if it was deliberate or simply an oversight."
Alaric did not look up from the letters spread across his desk immediately -- correspondence, she assumed, from the various holds and garrisons scattered across his territory, the tedious machinery of ruling two kingdoms' worth of fear. "It was deliberate," he said finally. "The word never sat right in my mouth, once I understood what it cost you to hear it."
"You could simply use my name."
"I could." He set down the letter he had been reading, and studied her with an expression she could not immediately categorize -- something careful, something almost hesitant, entirely unlike the flat authority he wore in front of everyone else in the citadel. "I find I'm not yet certain I've earned the right to."
The admission startled her more than she let show. "You gave me the name back. That's a stranger currency to spend than earning the right to use it."
"Giving something back and earning the right to claim it as familiar are not the same transaction," he said. "I would rather wait until you offer it freely than take it simply because I have the power to."
She studied him for a long moment, weighing the words against every calculation she had learned to run automatically whenever someone offered her something that looked, on its surface, like kindness. She could not locate the trap in this one either, and the absence of it unsettled her more than its presence would have.
"You're a strange kind of tyrant," she said finally, the observation slipping out with more warmth in it than she had intended to allow herself.
"So I've been told, by precisely one person in six long, careful years." Something in his mouth curved, not quite a smile, but close enough to its shadow that she felt the shift of it somewhere behind her ribs. "I find I don't entirely mind hearing it from her."
*
She pressed him about the curse that afternoon, in the low northern light of his private study, because she had decided, somewhere in the past few days, that understanding the shape of his suffering mattered to her beyond the simple mechanics of keeping him useful to whatever bargain kept her fed and warm.
"Tell me what happens," she said, "when the moon is full. Not the parts you've already told me. The rest of it. I've been treating your curse like a puzzle since the day I arrived, and I find I can't solve a puzzle I only have half the pieces to."
Something in his expression closed, briefly, the old guardedness she recognized from their first conversations resurfacing like a tide pulling back before a larger wave. "You don't need the rest of it. Knowing the mechanism doesn't change what you'll be asked to do when the night comes."
"It changes how prepared I am to do it well." She held his gaze, steady, refusing the deflection. "I've survived twelve years of poison by understanding exactly what each compound does to a body before it's ever administered. I don't intend to walk into your curse blind simply because the details are uncomfortable to speak aloud."
He was quiet for a long moment, and when he finally answered, his voice had dropped into something rougher, stripped of its usual careful control. "My body changes shape. Not metaphorically. The skin splits and blackens across my chest and arms. My nails grow into something closer to claws. I lose most of my capacity for language, and with it, most of my capacity to recognize the difference between a threat and someone simply standing too close to me at the wrong moment." His jaw tightened. "I have hurt people before, Valeria. Not strangers. Men who had served this citadel for years, who happened to be nearby when the transformation took hold too quickly for anyone to clear the room in time. I don't intend to let that happen again if I can help it, which is the entire reason I keep myself chained in the deepest cell on nights like the one approaching."
Valeria absorbed this without flinching, though something in her chest tightened at the image of him alone in the dark, bound in iron, waiting to become something he feared more than any enemy he had ever faced on a battlefield. "And the chains hold you. Every time."
"Every time so far." His voice had gone very quiet. "I don't know what happens the night they don't. I've been told, by the one physician who understands the mechanism even partially, that the curse worsens the longer it goes unchecked. That eventually the man inside the monster stops coming back at all."
"That won't happen," Valeria said, more sharply than she intended, the words leaving her before she had fully examined why they mattered so much to say aloud.
Alaric looked at her, something raw and startled flickering behind his amber eyes. "You can't know that."
"I know the mechanics of poison and antidote better than any physician in either of our kingdoms," she said. "I know that a compound this precise, this deliberately calibrated to control rather than simply kill, was built with an antidote in mind, even if your uncle never intended anyone to find it. Curses built by men are rarely as absolute as the men who build them believe. There is always a mechanism. I intend to find it."
"Why," he asked, and the single word carried more weight than she expected, a genuine question rather than a rhetorical one. "Why does it matter to you whether I find a cure or simply continue managing the symptoms until the day the chains finally fail?"
She considered the question honestly, turning it over with the same care she gave every dangerous truth she had ever needed to examine before speaking it aloud. "Because I've spent twelve years being told that some conditions simply have to be managed rather than cured, that some cages are permanent regardless of how much a person might wish otherwise. I stopped believing that a very long time ago, somewhere around the point I realized believing it was simply another way of giving up before anyone had actually tried hard enough to prove it true." She met his eyes. "I don't intend to watch you accept a cage as permanent, my lord, when I haven't yet exhausted every possibility that it isn't."
Something shifted in his expression -- not quite hope, not yet, but the fragile beginning of something adjacent to it, a man allowing himself, however briefly, to consider a future he had long since stopped expecting to have.
*
She noticed the first true symptom of the coming moon two days later, in the middle of an otherwise unremarkable afternoon.
Alaric had been reviewing correspondence at his desk when she entered to return a book he had lent her, and she noticed it before he did -- the faint tremor in his hand as he set down his quill, the sudden sheen of sweat along his hairline despite the perpetual cold of the northern stone around them. His breathing had changed too, grown shallower, quicker, and when he finally looked up at her, his eyes carried the first thin edge of red bleeding into the amber, the pupils narrowing by a fraction too small for most people to notice.
She noticed. She had spent twelve years noticing exactly this kind of change in her own body, and she recognized the early architecture of transformation the way she recognized the early architecture of any poison taking hold.
"It's starting," she said, setting the book down without ceremony and crossing the room toward him.
"It's manageable." His voice had roughened, the words costing him more effort than they should have. "Three days yet before it matters."
"It matters now, if it's already costing you this much control over your own hands." She reached him and, without asking permission this time, pressed her palm flat against his chest the way she had once before, feeling the frantic, wrong rhythm beneath his ribs pulse harder against her palm than it had the first time she'd tested it. "Sit still. Let me see what the scent alone does before we decide whether it's enough."
He obeyed, which surprised her more than she let show, and she watched, with the same clinical focus she gave everything, as his breathing slowly evened beneath her palm, the faint red bleeding back out of his eyes by careful degrees.
"Better," he admitted, quietly, some of the tension easing from his shoulders. "It works faster now than it did the first time."
"Because your body has learned to recognize the compound. That's simply how tolerance and response work, whether the substance is a poison or its opposite." She did not remove her hand immediately, watching instead the slow, visible relief settle into the lines of his face, and found herself, against every careful instinct she had built over twelve years, reluctant to step back and break the contact entirely. "How long does the scent alone typically hold, this close to the full moon?"
"An hour, perhaps two, before the ache returns." He glanced down at her hand still resting against his chest, and something in his expression shifted into a careful, searching kind of attention she had not seen from him before. "You don't have to keep touching me to answer that question. I could simply tell you."
"I'm aware." She did not move her hand. "I find I'd rather verify it myself."
The admission cost her more than she expected it to, some old, deeply buried instinct protesting the honesty of it even as she said the words aloud, and she watched him register the shift in her -- watched the careful, searching attention in his eyes deepen into something quieter, warmer, dangerously close to the shape of understanding.
"Valeria," he said, low, testing the syllables of her name with a care she had not heard him use before, as though the name itself were something fragile enough to require gentle handling.
She did not correct him. She did not, this time, retreat behind the old defensive humor that usually rose to meet moments like this one. She simply stood there, her palm still resting against the frantic, healing rhythm of his heart, and allowed the silence between them to stretch longer than strict necessity required.
*
That evening, as the moon climbed fuller and closer toward its peak, Alaric found her in the corridor outside her chamber, his expression carrying an authority she had not heard directed at her before -- not the careful gentleness of their private conversations, but something closer to command.
"You'll stay away from the lower cells three nights from now," he said. "I mean it, Valeria. Whatever curiosity you've developed about the mechanism of this curse, satisfy it through conversation, not through proximity to the thing itself when it takes hold. I won't have you anywhere near me once the transformation begins."
"You're giving me an order."
"I'm giving you a warning dressed as an order, because I suspect the warning alone won't be sufficient to keep you away." His voice had roughened, and beneath the authority she caught something else -- fear, she realized, though not for himself. "I have hurt people who got too close before, people far more prepared for it than you are. I won't have your death be the price of your curiosity."
Valeria studied him for a long moment, and did not offer him the reassurance he was clearly hoping to hear, because she had never once, in her entire life, been willing to promise obedience she did not actually intend to give.
"I hear what you are saying to me clearly," she said instead, which was, she reflected privately, not remotely the same thing as agreement.
He seemed to recognize the distinction immediately, something sharp flickering across his features. "That's not a yes, is it," he said, his voice carrying an edge of frustration he did not fully bother hiding.
"No," she agreed. "It isn't."
He opened his mouth as though to press the point further, then seemed to think better of it, some older weariness settling over him instead. "Three nights," he said again, quieter now. "I would ask you, if nothing else, to at least consider what it would cost me to hurt you the way I've hurt others before. I don't think I would survive that particular failure, curse or no curse."
The admission landed with more weight than his earlier command had, and Valeria found herself, despite every careful instinct twelve years of survival had built into her, unable to summon the easy defiance she had offered only moments before.
"I'll consider it," she said finally, which was, at least, entirely true.
He left without pressing further, and Valeria stood alone in the corridor for a long while afterward, watching the thin sliver of moonlight fall through the narrow window at the corridor's end, already three-quarters toward its terrible fullness.
She thought of the chains in the lowest cell. She thought of a man alone in the dark, waiting to become something he feared more than any battlefield had ever taught him to fear. She thought, too, of the frantic rhythm beneath her palm that afternoon, the way it had slowed and steadied simply from her nearness, and understood, with a clarity that settled uncomfortably alongside her old survival instincts, that she was no longer entirely certain whether she stayed close to him now purely to study the mechanism of his suffering, or whether some quieter, less clinical part of her had already begun to want to stay close to him regardless of what it cost either of them.
She turned the old scar at her wrist beneath her thumb, the familiar gesture offering less comfort than it once had, and thought of the twelve years she had spent believing that wanting anything beyond simple survival was a luxury she could not afford. She had built an entire life around that belief, brick by careful brick, and she found herself, standing in the cold corridor with the moon climbing steadily toward its peak, unable to locate the same certainty in it that she once had.
She did not know, yet, what she intended to do about the order he had given her. She suspected, with the same quiet, dangerous certainty she reserved for conclusions she had not yet fully examined, that she already knew the answer regardless, and that the examining was simply a formality she was affording herself before admitting it outright.
Three nights, he had told her. Stay away from the lower cells.
She thought of the chains, and the dark, and a man who had spent six years learning to fear his own reflection, and she understood, turning back toward her chamber at last, that whatever answer she gave him when the night finally came, it would not be the obedience he had asked for.
