Three nights, Alaric had said. She had not agreed to a single hour of it.
Valeria spent the days leading up to the full moon watching him retreat, degree by careful degree, into something colder than the man who had shared his table with her these past two weeks. He took his meals alone now, or claimed to have no appetite when a servant brought a tray to his study. He stopped seeking her out in the evenings. When their paths crossed in the corridors, he offered her nothing but a terse nod before continuing on, his jaw set in the particular rigid line she had already learned to recognize as a man bracing himself against something he refused to name aloud.
She understood the withdrawal, even as it irritated her more than she expected. He was protecting her from the version of himself he feared most, the same instinct that had kept him chained in the deepest cell for six years rather than risk what his hands might do to someone standing too close. She simply did not agree that protection built on distance was protection at all. She had spent twelve years learning that isolation rarely protected anyone -- it only made the suffering quieter, easier for everyone else to ignore, easier for the sufferer to convince himself that solitude was simply the natural shape of his existence rather than a wound someone had carved into him deliberately.
She recognized the pattern because she had lived a version of it herself, in the years before Alaric's men broke down the door of her chamber. The physicians of the Crimson Empire had never chained her for her own protection, precisely, but they had isolated her just as thoroughly -- kept her apart from the other prisoners, apart from any servant who might have grown fond enough of her to intervene on her behalf, apart from anything that might have complicated the clean, clinical distance required to use her the way they wished. Isolation, she had learned early, was rarely about protecting the isolated. It was about protecting everyone else from the discomfort of witnessing what was being done to them.
She did not intend to let Alaric build that same architecture around his own suffering, not while she had breath enough to argue against it.
"You're avoiding me," she said, catching him in the armory two days before the moon's peak, where he had gone, she suspected, specifically because he assumed she would not follow him there.
"I'm preparing." He did not look up from the chain he was inspecting, thick iron links designed, she understood without needing to ask, for a body considerably larger and stronger than the one currently holding them. "There's a difference."
"Is there. Because from where I'm standing, it looks a great deal like a man trying to disappear before anyone can watch him fail to."
His hands stilled on the chain. When he finally looked at her, something raw flickered behind the careful control in his eyes. "I have hurt people before, Valeria. I told you this. I don't intend to add you to that list simply because you find my absence inconvenient."
"I'm not asking you to spare my feelings. I'm asking you to stop deciding on my behalf what risks I'm willing to take." She crossed the room toward him, and though he did not step back, she saw the effort it cost him to hold still. "You keep speaking as though I have no say in what happens to my own body. I've spent twelve years having that decision made for me by men who thought they understood the danger better than I did. I would ask you not to become one more name on that particular list."
"This isn't the same."
"Isn't it? You intend to lock me in my chamber for three nights, against my will, because you've decided you know better than I do what I can survive." She held his gaze, unflinching. "That is precisely the same architecture, my lord, regardless of how gently you intend to enforce it."
Something in his expression cracked, briefly, the raw uncertainty beneath his authority showing through before he mastered it again. "I'm not trying to control you. I'm trying to keep you alive."
"You've kept plenty of people alive by locking them away for their own protection before, I imagine. Kaelen, perhaps, in the early years, before he grew strong enough to make his own choices about what danger he was willing to stand near. I wonder if he thanked you for the confinement, or simply endured it until he was permitted a say in the matter."
Alaric's jaw tightened, the reference clearly landing closer to old history than she had anticipated. "That's not the same situation, and you know it."
"I know that every powerful man I've ever met has believed, sincerely, that his particular cage was different from all the others -- built out of care rather than control, kindness rather than convenience." She did not soften the words, though she watched them cost him something regardless. "I don't doubt that you believe that of yourself right now, my lord. I simply don't share the belief."
"Then trust me to make that calculation myself. I understand poison and its costs better than anyone else in this citadel, including your physician. If I decide the risk is worth taking, that decision belongs to me, not to you."
He set down the chain, finally, and studied her with an intensity that made the old scar at her wrist ache beneath her sleeve. "And if I refuse to let you take that risk regardless?"
"Then you'll discover, my lord, that locked doors have never once stopped me from getting exactly where I intend to go."
He did not answer immediately, and in the silence that followed, she watched something shift behind his eyes -- not quite surrender, but the reluctant recognition of a man realizing he had already lost an argument he had not fully understood himself to be having. "You're the most stubborn creature I have ever had the misfortune to bargain with," he said finally, and there was, buried beneath the exhaustion in his voice, something that might almost have been reluctant affection.
"I've had a great deal of practice," Valeria said. "Stubbornness is simply survival, worn long enough to become a personality."

Malakor found her later that same afternoon, in the narrow corridor outside the small chamber that had become, over the past weeks, something closer to a study than a cell. His expression carried none of its usual careful deference, and she understood immediately that whatever he had come to say, he had chosen this moment specifically because Alaric was elsewhere.
"A word, Lady Valeria." He did not wait for her permission before continuing, his voice pitched low with the particular urgency of a man who believed he was delivering an unwelcome but necessary truth. "I understand his lordship intends to lock you away during the transformation. I would encourage you to accept that confinement without argument, for reasons that have nothing to do with your safety and everything to do with his."
"Explain."
"The compound in your blood grows more potent each time it's administered -- I've studied the samples extensively, with his lordship's reluctant permission." Malakor's eyes carried the same hungry fascination she had catalogued the very first day she met him, though he kept it carefully banked now beneath a mask of professional concern. He produced, from within his robes, a small leather notebook filled with dense, cramped handwriting, and opened it to a page marked with a strip of ribbon, as though he had prepared this particular argument in advance. "There is a risk, Lady Valeria, that repeated close exposure during the peak of his transformation could accelerate his body's demand for it. He may become dependent in ways that compromise his judgment entirely -- and a compromised Beast of Frostfell, unable to distinguish need from desire, poses a danger to this entire citadel far greater than the curse alone ever has."
"You've documented all of this."
"I document everything, Lady Valeria. It is the whole of my purpose here." He closed the notebook with a small, satisfied snap, as though the mere existence of his research settled the matter beyond further argument. "I would think a woman who spent twelve years being studied herself might appreciate the value of careful observation over sentiment."
"I appreciate careful observation a great deal, Malakor. What I distrust is careful observation dressed up as concern for someone else's welfare, when the observer's own interests happen to align so neatly with the conclusion he's arguing for." She studied him with the same clinical attention she had once reserved for identifying which physician in the Crimson Empire's employ posed the greatest threat on any given day.
Valeria studied him for a long moment, weighing the shape of the warning against everything else she had already learned about the man delivering it. "If I stay away from him during the transformation, you become the only remaining source of relief his body has left to draw on. Your compounds. Your tinctures. Your careful documentation of exactly how much of each substance his body requires to function. That arrangement makes you considerably more valuable to this citadel than you currently are, does it not?"
Something flickered across Malakor's face -- not quite guilt, but adjacent to it, the particular discomfort of a man who had not expected his reasoning to be dismantled so precisely. "You mistake ambition for malice, Lady Valeria. I have served this citadel faithfully for eleven years. I have watched his lordship suffer through every cycle of this curse with nothing but inadequate remedies to offer him. If my research happens to benefit from careful management of the variables involved, I hardly think that disqualifies the underlying concern."
"Perhaps not. But it does mean I'll be weighing your advice against your incentives from this point forward, rather than accepting either at face value."
Malakor's expression flickered, and she understood she had struck closer to the truth than he intended to admit. "I want him kept safe, Lady Valeria. My methods for accomplishing that are simply more thorough than sentiment allows for."
"Your methods, as I understand them, involve wanting my blood on a schedule you control rather than one I choose." She held his gaze without flinching. "I'll consider your concerns, Malakor. I won't pretend I trust the source of them."
She left him standing in the corridor and did not look back, though she felt his eyes on her the entire length of the hall, cataloguing her the way he catalogued everything -- a specimen whose full value he had not yet finished calculating.
*
Kaelen intercepted her outside the entrance to the lower cells on the final evening before the moon reached its peak, his expression carrying the particular weariness of a man who had already fought this argument once and expected to lose it again.
"He asked me to make certain you stayed in the east wing tonight," Kaelen said. "I told him I'd do what I could. I'm telling you now, plainly, because I've learned these past weeks that plain speaking works better with you than orders."
"I appreciate the honesty, Captain. It changes absolutely nothing about my intentions tonight, but I appreciate it regardless."
"I assumed as much." He studied her for a long moment, something almost like reluctant respect settling into his features -- the particular expression, she had come to recognize, of a man revising his assessment of someone in real time and finding the revision uncomfortable regardless of how necessary it had become. "I watched what the curse does to him once, years ago, before I understood how to keep my distance in time. It isn't a gentle thing to witness, Lady Valeria. Whatever affection has grown between the two of you these past weeks, I'd ask you to consider whether you're prepared for what you'll actually see tonight, not simply what you imagine it will look like."
"I've spent twelve years being tested with things designed specifically to unmake a person from the inside," Valeria said quietly. "I don't imagine there's much left in this world capable of surprising me into retreat, Captain. Not even this."
"You say that with a great deal of certainty for someone who hasn't seen it."
"I say it with the certainty of someone who has spent her entire life being told, by men far more powerful than either of us, exactly what she would and would not be able to endure." Something in her voice sharpened, not with anger at him specifically, but with the accumulated weight of every previous man who had made that same assumption about her limits. "I've endured all of it, Captain. Every prediction of my breaking point has proven wrong so far. I don't intend to let tonight be the first exception simply because it frightens people more comfortable imagining me fragile than acknowledging what I've actually survived."
Kaelen said nothing for a long moment, and when he finally spoke again, his voice had lost its earlier caution. "For what it's worth, Lady Valeria -- and I say this as a man who spent the first two weeks of your presence here certain you'd prove to be exactly the threat I feared -- I no longer believe fragility was ever the correct word for you."
"No," she agreed quietly, the certainty in her own voice settling something restless in her chest. "It rarely has been, and I doubt it ever will be again."
Something in his expression shifted, and he stepped aside from the corridor without further argument, though the concern in his eyes did not fully fade. He glanced once more toward the iron door at the bottom of the distant stairwell before adding, more quietly than before, "For what it's worth, I hope whatever you're walking toward tonight proves worth the risk you're so determined to take. I've spent enough years standing guard over grief in this citadel to recognize when someone's decided it's worth outrunning anyway."
"Then I won't stand in your way tonight. But I'll be close, in case either of you needs someone who isn't compromised by what's happening between you."
She thanked him with a nod and continued past, and found, standing alone at last outside the heavy iron door that led down toward the deepest cells of Shadowfall Citadel, that her hands had begun, very faintly, to tremble -- not from fear of what waited on the other side, but from the strange, unfamiliar weight of choosing, deliberately and without coercion, to walk toward someone rather than away from danger.
She had spent twelve years learning that proximity to power always cost her something. She did not yet know what tonight would cost her. But for the first time in longer than she could remember, she found she was willing to pay whatever price it demanded, simply for the chance to prove that not every cage in this world had to remain permanent. She pressed her thumb briefly against the old scar at her wrist, the familiar gesture grounding her the way it always had, and reminded herself, with the same clinical steadiness she had used to survive every trial before this one, that fear was simply information about what mattered most, and that she had never once let information alone stop her from finishing what she had started.
The stairwell down toward the cells grew colder with every step, the northern stone radiating a chill that had nothing to do with the season and everything to do, she suspected, with whatever ancient dread had settled permanently into these walls over generations of use for exactly this purpose. Torches guttered low along the passage, casting more shadow than light, and she found herself cataloguing the architecture out of long habit even now -- the narrowness of the stairs, the absence of any second exit, the particular quality of silence that told her this space had been built deliberately to contain something no one wished to acknowledge existed above ground.
She thought, descending, of every locked door she had ever stood before in her life, and understood that this one, unlike all the others, she was choosing to open herself. No guard had dragged her here. No physician had ordered her presence. She had simply decided, somewhere in the accumulated weight of the past two weeks, that whatever waited beyond this door mattered enough to her to risk whatever it might cost, and the strangeness of that decision -- of choosing danger deliberately, rather than having it chosen for her -- sat in her chest with a weight she had not fully anticipated.
The first low, pained sound reached her through the stone before she had even finished descending the final stairwell -- a sound that was not quite human and not yet fully monster, caught somewhere agonizing in between, and Valeria did not slow her pace at the sound of it.
She had come too far, and decided too much, to turn back now.
The iron door at the bottom of the stairs stood before her, cold beneath her palm when she finally reached it, and beyond it she could hear the low rattle of chains straining against stone, the ragged, desperate rhythm of breathing no longer fully belonging to the man she had come to know across a dozen quiet evenings. She thought, one final time, of every door she had ever stood before in her life -- the iron door of her chamber in the Crimson Empire, closing behind her at six years old; the shattered door Alaric had broken through the night the palace fell; and now this one, the last of them, waiting to be opened not by force, but by her own deliberate choice.
She pressed her hand flat against the door and pushed.
