Zoey decided, somewhere around the third sleepless night of turning the name Nancy over in her mind, that she was not going to do what she once would have done. She was not going to investigate. She was not going to search his name alongside hers online, was not going to corner him with questions he clearly wasn't ready to answer, was not going to treat his silence as evidence of anything except what it plainly was — a wound he hadn't yet decided he trusted her enough to show her.
Instead, she brought coffee.
Not as a cover story this time, not disguised as a fire safety concern or a discount bakery sale. Just coffee, made simply, carried across the hall on a Tuesday evening when she noticed his light still on later than usual, and a quiet knock that asked for nothing beyond permission to sit somewhere nearby.
"Hey," Leo said, opening the door, something in his face still carrying the faint, careful strain she'd noticed since Marcus's last visit. "You didn't have to—"
"I know," Zoey said, holding out one of the mugs. "I wanted to."
He let her in without further protest, and she settled onto the worn couch in his living room while he returned to his workbench, sketching out storyboard panels with the particular, absent focus of someone using work as a place to hide. Mochi wound around her ankles once before settling into his usual spot beside her, and for a long while, neither of them spoke — Zoey simply present, sipping her coffee, watching him work, offering nothing beyond quiet company.
She'd learned this, she realized, from him. This exact, patient presence, undemanding, unhurried — she'd watched him do it for her more times than she could count, waiting outside locked doors of her own making without ever once trying to force them open. It occurred to her, sitting there, that this might be the truest thing she'd ever learned about love: not the grand gestures, not the dramatic declarations, but this — the willingness to simply stay in a room with someone's silence, without demanding it become anything else before it was ready.
The first evening, they barely spoke at all beyond small, ordinary things — a funny complaint about a storyboard revision, a brief exchange about whether Mochi had gained weight again. She left before it got too late, kissed him softly at the door, and made her way back across the hall without either of them having said anything about Nancy or Marcus at all.
The second evening went much the same way, though Leo seemed, if anything, slightly more relaxed — his shoulders less rigid over the workbench, his jokes landing with a bit more of their usual ease. Zoey noticed, and said nothing about noticing, simply let the quiet do whatever work it needed to do.
It took two more evenings like this — coffee, quiet, no questions — before Leo finally set down his tools, rubbed a hand over his face, and spoke without her prompting him at all.
"Her name was Nancy," he said, quietly, not looking up from the half-finished figure in his hands. "We were together almost two years. Marcus knew her — they used to work together, before he moved up. That's part of why he brings her up. He likes reminding me she left."
Zoey stayed very still, giving him room to keep going if he wanted to, saying nothing that might close the door he'd only just cracked open.
"She told me I wasn't realistic enough," Leo continued, voice careful, like he was handling something fragile. "That I was — chasing something that wasn't ever going to be a real career. Not grown up enough to build an actual life around clay figures and children's television." A short, humorless laugh. "She wasn't wrong, exactly, about how it looked from the outside. It's a strange thing to stake a whole life on."
"It's not strange," Zoey said, quietly, unable to hold the words back any longer. "It's the thing you're good at. It's the thing that makes you you."
Leo looked up at her then, something raw and uncertain in his expression, like he wasn't quite sure yet whether he believed her, or whether he was simply relieved someone had said it out loud.
"There's more to it," he added, after a moment, voice quieter still. "My family, mostly. It's — a whole thing. Nancy wasn't wrong that I've spent a long time hearing that I've made the wrong choice. I'm not ready to get into all of it tonight. But I wanted you to at least know her name. Know that Marcus wasn't making something up to be cruel, even if that's exactly why he brought it up."
"I don't need to know everything tonight," Zoey said, setting her mug down, crossing the small space between them to sit on the stool beside his workbench. She reached for his hand, the gesture simple, steady, deliberately unhurried. "I'm not asking you to tell me the whole story right now. I just need to know you're not keeping it from me because you don't trust me. Because I think I understand, better than almost anyone, what it feels like to be scared someone will look at you differently once they know the whole thing."
Leo turned his hand over beneath hers, lacing their fingers together, something in his shoulders easing for the first time in days.
"She was wrong," Zoey added, softer now. "About you not being realistic. About you not being grown up enough. Whatever she saw, she wasn't looking closely enough to see what was actually there."
For a long moment, Leo simply looked at her, something in his face open in a way she hadn't seen before — not the easy warmth he wore for the world, not even the careful tenderness he'd shown her in a dozen small kindnesses over the past two months, but something more unguarded than either of those, something that looked, unmistakably, like a man finally letting himself be seen exactly as he was.
"Thank you," he said, quietly, "for not asking for more than I could give tonight."
"You never asked more of me than I could give," Zoey said. "Seemed only fair."
He brought her hand to his mouth then, pressing a soft, unhurried kiss to her knuckles, and Zoey felt something settle deep in her chest — not the frantic, uncertain fluttering of earlier weeks, but something steadier, surer, the particular calm of two people who had each, in their own careful way, finally begun trusting the other with the parts of themselves they'd spent years keeping locked away.
They sat together a while longer after that, the conversation drifting into easier territory — his work, her stalled manuscript, the absurdity of Mochi's ongoing vendetta against the vacuum cleaner — but something had shifted underneath the ordinary chatter, some quiet threshold crossed that neither of them needed to name out loud.
Neither of them said anything else that night about Nancy, or Marcus, or the locked room down the hall that still held whatever remained of that old wound, waiting for its own moment to be opened.
But Zoey left that evening with the quiet, certain sense that whatever came next, they would face it together — and that the distance she'd feared growing between them had, instead, just closed a little further, one small, patient truth at a time.
Walking back across the hall, she found herself thinking, with a clarity that surprised her, that she no longer felt like a woman investigating a stranger, or even a woman falling for someone new. She felt, simply, like someone who had found a person worth being patient for — and who was, for the first time in longer than she could remember, entirely unafraid of what patience might eventually reveal.
