Zoey sat down at her desk on the seventh day of Leo's frantic work sprint, opened the manuscript she'd been avoiding for weeks, and made a decision that felt, in the moment, considerably more terrifying than anything she'd once imagined about a stranger's notebook full of red ink.
She was going to write the truth.
Not the truth disguised as fiction, not scenes lifted wholesale from memory with the names barely changed, but something more honest still — a book that admitted, openly, what it had quietly become weeks ago without her permission: a story about a woman who thought she was hunting a monster and found, instead, someone worth trusting.
She deleted the opening chapter first — the one about a killer's journal, the one that had started this whole strange, wonderful mess — and stared at the blank page for a long moment before typing, slowly, a new first line.
Zoey had built an entire career out of imagining the worst possible thing that could happen to a person, and yet somehow, she had never once imagined this.
It felt strange, writing herself directly onto the page rather than hiding behind a thin veil of fictional names. But it also felt, for the first time in longer than she could remember, entirely true — the words coming easier than they had in months, the story unspooling not from some manufactured plot device but from actual memory, actual feeling, actual love she'd been too afraid to examine directly until it had already become undeniable.
She wrote through the morning, then the afternoon, pausing only to bring coffee across the hall and sit with Leo for an hour before returning to her own desk, energized rather than depleted by the visit. She wrote about the wrong bag, the notebook, the murder mime. She wrote about hiding in a closet with a cat, about fire safety inspections that fooled no one, about a hedgehog holding a strawberry and a rabbit with a cracked magnifying glass.
By evening, she had produced more genuine pages than she had in the previous six weeks combined. She found, somewhere around the fifth hour of writing, that she'd stopped worrying about whether the tone was consistent, whether the genre made sense, whether her editor would understand what had happened to the grim, visceral thriller they'd originally agreed on. She simply wrote what had actually happened, trusting, for the first time in her career, that the truth of it might carry more weight than anything she could have invented.
She paused once, deep into the afternoon, staring at a half-finished sentence about the moment Leo had first opened his workshop door to her — the ancient, unrenovated version of that scene that still hadn't happened yet, though she could feel it coming, some quiet certainty settling in her chest that it wouldn't be much longer now before he let her all the way in. She left the sentence unfinished, a placeholder for something she hadn't lived yet, and moved on to safer ground.
Her editor's response, when she finally sent the first three chapters two days later, came faster than usual, and considerably more excited.
"Zoey." The voice on the phone carried none of the careful, bewildered caution from their last conversation. "This is — okay, this is not remotely the book we discussed, but I need you to keep going exactly like this."
"You're not upset?" Zoey asked, cautiously.
"Upset? Zoey, this is the best thing you've ever written. It's funny, it's tender, it's completely unhinged in the specific way that actually good romantic comedy needs to be. I laughed out loud twice reading the closet scene. Twice." A pause. "Is this — I have to ask again, is this based on something real?"
Zoey looked across the street, where Leo's light glowed steady in the evening dark, his silhouette bent once more over his workbench, still working too hard, still carrying more than he should alone, but slightly less frantic than he'd been a week ago.
"Loosely," she said, which felt, all things considered, like an almost comical understatement.
"Well, whatever inspired it, keep it coming. This isn't a thriller anymore, obviously, but I think it might actually be something better. What genre are we even calling this now?"
"I have absolutely no idea," Zoey admitted, laughing despite herself. "Romantic comedy with light property damage, maybe."
"I'll workshop the back cover copy," her editor said, dry but clearly delighted. "Can you have the rest of the draft to me in six weeks?"
Zoey agreed, hung up, and sat for a long moment in the quiet of her apartment, feeling something loosen in her chest that had been tight for longer than just this past week — the old, exhausting pressure to prove herself capable of writing something dark and serious, replaced, unexpectedly, by the simple relief of writing something true instead.
She thought about the working title she'd scribbled to herself weeks ago — I don't know what this book is anymore, but I think I finally know what it's actually about — and opened a fresh document to type something more permanent in its place.
She sat with the cursor blinking for a long moment before she typed, tentatively: The Wrong Suspect.
She looked at it for a while, smiling slightly at the double meaning buried in it — a woman who'd spent weeks certain she'd found a dangerous man, only to discover she'd been wrong about exactly the right person to fall for. She thought, too, about how strange it was that the title could be read two ways at once: the wrong suspect for a crime that never happened, and the wrong suspect for the kind of caution she'd built her whole life around, only to discover that caution itself had misjudged him entirely.
It felt, she decided, exactly right.
She spent the rest of that evening drafting the next chapter — the one about the fire alarm, the almost-confession, the smoke still hanging faintly in the kitchen air when the moment passed without either of them managing to say the thing they'd both clearly wanted to — and found, writing it, that she understood something about her own feelings with a clarity the actual moment hadn't quite allowed.
She loved him. She'd known it, on some level, for weeks now — since the hedgehog, maybe, or even earlier, buried somewhere in a fire safety excuse in a dark closet with a sleeping cat pinning her legs in place. But writing it down, watching the words settle onto the page in black and white, made the feeling solid in a way it hadn't quite been before.
She didn't send that chapter to her editor yet. Some things, she decided, needed to be said out loud to the person they were actually about before they went anywhere else.
She sat back in her chair, rereading the paragraph one more time, and found herself smiling at her own reflection faintly visible in the dark laptop screen — a woman who had once built her entire identity around suspicion and control, now sitting in her apartment at midnight, hopelessly, happily certain that the bravest thing left to do wasn't to investigate anything at all, but simply to say something true out loud and see what happened next.
She glanced once more across the street, where Leo's light still burned late into the night, and thought, closing her laptop, that soon — very soon now — she was going to find the courage to finish the sentence the smoke alarm had once interrupted.
Not in a manuscript. Not in a case file. Just to him, plainly, the way he'd been patient enough to wait for all along.
