Zoey noticed the absence before she noticed anything else — the particular, wrong quality of a window that should have shown movement by nine in the morning and instead showed only stillness, curtains still drawn, no light on despite the gray, overcast day outside.
She told herself it meant nothing. Leo had earned a late morning after the week he'd had; there was no reason to read anything into a single quiet window.
By eleven, the stillness had started to feel less like rest and more like something else entirely. She texted him — a casual, unassuming morning! how's the prep going — and received nothing in return, not even the customary quick reply he usually managed even mid-crisis.
By noon, the low, persistent unease in her chest had become something she could no longer talk herself out of.
She crossed the hall and knocked, twice, firmly, and when no answer came, she found herself standing in front of his door with the spare key he'd given her weeks ago — not for any dramatic reason, just practicality, in case Mochi ever needed feeding while Leo traveled for work, a small, domestic gesture of trust that had felt, at the time, entirely unremarkable.
It felt considerably more significant now, key trembling slightly in her hand as she let herself in.
"Leo?"
The apartment was dim, curtains drawn, and it took her eyes a moment to adjust before she found him — collapsed on the living room couch rather than his bed, still fully dressed in yesterday's clothes, one arm flung over his eyes, his skin, when she crossed the room and pressed the back of her hand to his forehead, alarmingly hot.
"Leo." She said his name more urgently this time, and he stirred, groaning softly, eyes cracking open with visible effort, glassy and unfocused.
"Zoey?" His voice came out rough, disoriented. "What time is it? I need to—" He tried to push himself upright and immediately swayed, color draining further from an already pale face, and Zoey caught his shoulder, pressing him firmly back down.
"You need to lie down," she said, and heard the sharp edge of real fear in her own voice. "You're burning up. When did this start?"
"I'm fine," Leo mumbled, the protest weaker than any version of it she'd heard from him before, undermined completely by the way his eyes kept sliding shut against his will. "Just — tired. I have the presentation to finish, I can't—"
"Leo, you have a fever. You are not finishing a presentation right now."
"I have to." His voice cracked slightly, something desperate bleeding through the exhaustion. "If I don't have something ready, if I show up unprepared, they'll—"
"They'll what?" Zoey asked, gently, sitting on the edge of the couch beside him, smoothing damp hair back from his forehead.
"They'll know I'm not good enough," Leo said, so quietly she almost missed it, eyes still closed, voice thin with fever and exhaustion both. "Everyone will know."
Something in Zoey's chest cracked at the raw, unguarded honesty of it — words he never would have said out loud in his right mind, stripped bare now by fever and depletion, revealing a fear so much larger than a single work deadline that she understood, with sudden clarity, exactly how long he must have been carrying it.
"You're sick," she said, softly, "and you need to rest. The presentation isn't happening today. I'm going to take care of that."
"You can't just—"
"I can, actually," Zoey said, already pulling out her phone, texting the studio's production coordinator a brief, firm message explaining that Leo was ill and would need to reschedule, before Leo could summon the strength to argue further. "There. Handled."
He mumbled something that might have been protest or might have been gratitude, already sinking back into a fitful, feverish doze, and Zoey sat with him for a long moment, watching his chest rise and fall unevenly, feeling the particular helpless tenderness of loving someone who had run themselves completely into the ground trying to prove they deserved to exist.
She got him water first, coaxing a few sips past cracked, dry lips, then found a thermometer in his bathroom cabinet — 102.4, high enough to worry her seriously — and spent the next hour alternating between damp cloths pressed to his forehead and quiet, useless reassurances that he probably couldn't fully hear.
Mochi, sensing something wrong in the particular way animals often did, abandoned his usual afternoon nap spot to curl protectively against Leo's side, and Zoey found herself grateful for the small, warm weight of him, some silent, four-legged solidarity in the long hours of watching Leo drift in and out of uneasy sleep.
It was somewhere around evening, the fever apparently peaking, that Leo began talking — not fully awake, not entirely lucid, mumbling fragments in a voice thinner and more frightened than she'd ever heard from him.
"—not enough," he murmured, restless, turning his face against the couch cushion. "Dad's right. Not — not a real job. Nancy's right too. Everyone's—"
"Leo." Zoey pressed the cool cloth gently against his cheek, voice soft but urgent. "Leo, you're dreaming. I'm here."
"—going to disappoint them," he continued, barely coherent, some deep, old wound clearly surfacing without the usual defenses to hold it back. "Always disappointing someone. Can't ever be—" His voice broke slightly, fever-thin and raw. "Can't ever just be enough, as I am."
Zoey felt tears sting unexpectedly at her own eyes, watching him suffer through whatever old, familiar nightmare his exhausted mind had conjured up, wishing desperately that she could simply reach into his fevered thoughts and pull the wound out by its roots.
"You are enough," she said instead, quiet and fierce, taking his hand in both of hers. "You hear me? You are so much more than enough, Leo. I don't know how to make you believe that when you're awake, but I need you to hear it now, even half-conscious and feverish and not entirely sure it's real. You are enough exactly as you are."
He didn't respond, not directly, but something in his expression eased slightly, his breathing evening out marginally, and Zoey stayed there beside him for the rest of the evening, holding his hand, murmuring quiet reassurances every time his sleep grew restless, watching the fever slowly, gradually begin to break sometime after midnight.
She didn't leave. She curled up in the armchair beside the couch, exhausted herself but unwilling to risk him waking alone and frightened, and drifted eventually into a light, uneasy sleep of her own, one hand still loosely tangled with his.
She woke twice in the night to check his temperature, relief flooding through her each time the numbers ticked steadily lower, and by the pale gray hour just before dawn, his fever had finally settled into something more manageable, his sleep deepening into something that finally looked like genuine, restorative rest rather than fevered exhaustion.
She sat there in the growing morning light, watching him sleep peacefully for the first time in what felt like weeks, and thought, with a clarity that startled her, about how far they'd both come from a stranger's mistaken bag and a notebook full of red ink — from a woman who once built elaborate cases against a man's supposed danger, to a woman who would now sit up all night simply making sure he knew, in whatever fevered corner of his mind still needed to hear it, that he was safe, and loved, and entirely enough.
She didn't know yet what the coming days would bring — whether Marcus's ultimatum would end in triumph or disappointment, whether Leo's fragile confidence would hold under the pressure still awaiting him. But sitting there in the quiet dawn, his hand still loosely held in hers, she felt something settle in her own chest with absolute certainty.
Whatever happened next, she wasn't going anywhere.
