Zoey finished the manuscript on a Tuesday evening, the final sentence arriving with none of the fanfare she'd once imagined a completed novel might deserve — just her, alone at her desk, cursor blinking after a period she'd typed with hands that trembled slightly from the sheer accumulated weight of everything the story had asked of her to write.
She'd changed the ending twice already, unsatisfied with versions that felt too neat, too tidy for a story that had, in real life, been considerably messier and more honest than fiction usually allowed. The final version, she thought, reading back through it one more time, finally captured something true — not a perfect resolution, but an honest one, complete with fire alarms and closet hiding spots and a locked door finally, courageously opened.
She reached the chapter about the workshop last, the one she'd been avoiding writing for days, and found, typing it out, that her hands genuinely shook translating that particular memory onto the page — the shelves of lonely figures, Leo's voice cracking over his father's cruelty, the ridiculous, lumpy clay creature she'd made and set beside his careful fox.
She didn't embellish it. She didn't need to. The moment, exactly as it had happened, carried more weight than anything she could have invented.
By the time she reached the final page, she sat back in her chair, exhausted and strangely emotional, feeling as though she'd just relived the entire relationship in miniature, compressed into several hundred pages that somehow still failed to capture the full, overwhelming reality of falling in love with the wrong suspect.
She thought, for a long moment, about whether to show Leo the manuscript before sending it to her editor — whether he deserved to see himself rendered so completely on the page before the world did.
She decided, in the end, against it. Not out of secrecy or deception, but because some part of her wanted this particular gift to arrive complete, unspoiled by advance nerves or self-consciousness — a surprise, delivered whole, the way the best declarations of love sometimes were.
She opened a new document instead, typing out a dedication page, something she'd never bothered with in her previous books, and found the words came easily, simply, exactly as true as everything else she'd written.
For L. — who taught me that some doors are worth waiting to be opened, and some suspects are worth being entirely, hopelessly wrong about.
She read it back several times, smiling, before attaching it to the front of the completed manuscript and sending the entire file to her editor with a brief, simple email: Here's the rest. I think this might be the best thing I've ever written.
The response came faster than she expected, and considerably more enthusiastic.
"Zoey." Her editor's voice, when she called an hour later, carried none of the careful professional restraint of their earlier conversations. "I read the whole thing in one sitting. I have not done that in years. This is — Zoey, this is genuinely special. I want to fast-track this. I think we could have it out within four months if we move quickly."
"Four months?" Zoey felt something bright and nervous flutter in her chest. "That's — that's really fast."
"It's really good," her editor countered. "The kind of good that doesn't happen often. I don't want to sit on it. Can you handle a quick turnaround on final edits?"
Zoey agreed, hanging up in a daze of excitement and nerves, and sat for a long moment simply absorbing the reality of what she'd just set in motion — a book, written entirely in truth, about the man she loved, headed now toward publication faster than she'd ever imagined possible.
She thought about the dedication page again, about the moment Leo would eventually read it — not today, not for months yet, but eventually, when the finished book landed in his hands and he found his own name, disguised only thinly, immortalized in the words she'd written about falling in love with him.
She smiled, imagining his face in that future moment, and felt a fresh wave of nervous anticipation settle warmly in her chest.
She didn't tell him about the call that night. She simply crossed the hall, as she often did now, and found him in his workshop, working on a new figure — something small and round, not for the show, judging by its lack of resemblance to any established character.
"What's this one?" she asked, settling onto her usual stool beside his workbench.
"Don't laugh," Leo said, though he was already smiling, clearly anticipating exactly the reaction he claimed to want to avoid. "It's a woman holding a very small, very confused notebook. I'm still working out the proportions."
Zoey laughed, delighted, leaning in to examine the tiny, half-finished figure — clearly meant to be her, clumsy sketch of a notebook clutched in oversized clay hands, an expression on the small face that managed, somehow, to convey both fierce determination and complete cluelessness.
"This is extremely accurate," she said, grinning.
"I thought so too," Leo agreed, pleased with himself. "I'm calling her Detective Nobody, since her case file never actually had any real evidence in it."
"I resent that title deeply," Zoey said, though she was laughing too hard for the protest to carry any real weight. "I had extensive evidence. A knife. A hand gesture. A cutting board."
"All completely innocent," Leo reminded her, grinning.
"In retrospect," Zoey conceded. "At the time, deeply suspicious."
They spent the rest of the evening in the workshop together, Leo carefully refining Detective Nobody's proportions while Zoey watched, occasionally offering unhelpful suggestions about accessory choices, both of them entirely unaware that somewhere in the near future, a very different notebook — the actual black leather one still sitting, forgotten, on a shelf in Zoey's living room — was about to become considerably more relevant than either of them currently anticipated.
