Her editor's request came with a laugh in her voice, half-joking, though something in the specific phrasing suggested she wasn't entirely kidding.
"So," she said, near the end of what was supposed to be a routine editing call, "I have to ask — is there any chance I could meet this mysterious inspiration of yours? Purely professional curiosity. I've been editing your books for four years and I've never seen you write anything with this much genuine feeling in it. I'd love to shake the hand of the man responsible."
Zoey laughed, though a small flutter of nerves accompanied the request. "I could probably arrange something," she said. "Nothing formal. Just coffee, maybe."
"Perfect. I'll be in the city next week for another meeting anyway."
The visit, when it arrived, felt considerably more significant than the casual coffee Zoey had promised — she found herself cleaning her apartment with unusual thoroughness the morning of, straightening books, wiping down surfaces that didn't particularly need wiping, the specific nervous energy of someone preparing to introduce two important parts of her life to each other for the first time.
She didn't think, in all her tidying, to examine the bookshelf near her window too closely — the one where a certain black leather notebook, retrieved months ago from a bag mix-up and never quite disposed of, had sat quietly gathering dust for weeks, a forgotten artifact of a misunderstanding long since resolved.
Leo arrived a little before her editor, freshly showered, slightly nervous in the specific way of someone meeting a person important to their partner for the first time. "Should I have brought something?" he asked, glancing around Zoey's apartment. "Wine? Flowers? I feel like there's a protocol I'm missing."
"You're fine," Zoey said, smoothing down his collar affectionately. "She's not scary. Just — enthusiastic. About books. And apparently about you, now, by extension."
Her editor arrived precisely on time, warm and immediately likable, and the initial awkwardness Zoey had half-expected dissolved almost instantly into easy, comfortable conversation — Leo's natural charm on full display, the editor clearly delighted by both his warmth and his visible, obvious devotion to Zoey.
"So you're the famous inspiration," she said, settling onto Zoey's couch with the coffee Zoey had prepared. "I have to say, the book does not do justice to how charming you actually are in person. Or maybe it does, and I just didn't expect it to translate quite this well off the page."
"I'm going to need context for what exactly is in this book," Leo said, glancing at Zoey with amused curiosity.
"You'll see when it's published," Zoey said, quickly, feeling color rise in her cheeks. "It's a surprise."
"A surprise," Leo repeated, eyebrows raised, clearly intrigued despite her deflection.
The conversation continued easily for the better part of an hour, her editor peppering Leo with genuinely curious questions about his work, delighted by his descriptions of the clay animation process, occasionally shooting Zoey knowing, pleased glances that suggested she was rapidly becoming as charmed by him in person as she'd apparently been by his fictionalized counterpart on the page.
It was during a brief lull in conversation, while Zoey stepped into the kitchen to refill the coffee, that her editor's attention drifted, idly, toward the bookshelf near the window — and landed, with visible curiosity, on the black leather notebook still sitting there, slightly out of place among Zoey's usual paperbacks.
"Oh, is this a research prop?" she asked, reaching for it before Zoey could return from the kitchen to intervene. "For the original thriller concept, maybe? It looks properly ominous."
Leo, still seated across from her, glanced over, something flickering briefly across his face — recognition, perhaps, or simple curiosity at seeing the old notebook again after so many months.
Her editor flipped it open before either of them could say anything, scanning the first page with the practiced, quick attention of someone who read professionally for a living, and her expression shifted almost immediately from casual curiosity into something much more animated.
"Wait," she said, sitting up straighter, flipping forward through several more pages with growing excitement. "Wait, I recognize this. This is the storyboard script for Sunny Meadow Friends — the wolf redemption arc, isn't it? I watched an episode with my niece last week, this is exactly the same sequence." She looked up, delighted. "This is amazing, is this an original prop from the show? Did you write this?" She looked directly at Leo now, clearly putting the pieces together. "You're the writer? The one everyone's been talking about online lately?"
Zoey, returning from the kitchen with the coffee pot in hand, stopped dead in the doorway, watching the scene unfold with a sudden, dizzying sense of vertigo — the notebook, the one that had started everything, now sitting open in her editor's hands, its true, entirely mundane identity finally, casually revealed after months of forgotten obscurity on a bookshelf she hadn't thought to clear before company arrived.
"Yeah," Leo said, a little bemused by the sudden enthusiasm, glancing at Zoey with visible confusion at her frozen expression. "That's — that's my early draft for that sequence, actually. I didn't realize Zoey still had it."
Zoey felt something in her chest go very still, the coffee pot suddenly heavy in her hand, as an entire, forgotten timeline began reassembling itself in her mind with startling, vertiginous clarity — the cafe, the mixed-up bags, the red ink she'd once been so convinced belonged to a killer, all of it suddenly, undeniably connected to the ordinary, unremarkable notebook now being admired by her delighted editor.
"You two know each other from before the neighbor thing?" her editor asked, glancing between them, sensing, perhaps, some undercurrent she couldn't quite place.
"It's a long story," Zoey managed, voice coming out strange and distant even to her own ears, the coffee pot trembling slightly as she finally set it down.
Leo was watching her now too, something in his expression shifting from confusion into a dawning, careful concern, clearly registering that something significant had just happened, even if he didn't yet understand exactly what.
"Zoey?" he asked, quiet, searching her face. "You okay?"
Zoey looked at the notebook still open in her editor's hands — the same pages, the same red ink, the same absurd, world-ending misunderstanding that had started an entire relationship on a foundation she'd never fully examined the strangeness of until this exact moment — and felt the ground beneath months of careful, hard-won trust begin, very quietly, to shift.
"I need to talk to you," she said to Leo, voice tight, "after she leaves."
