Zoey didn't cry when she got home.
She'd expected to, somewhere on the walk back across the hall — a handful of steps that had felt, at the time, both impossibly short and unbearably long — but instead she simply closed her apartment door, locked it, and stood there in the entryway for a long moment, feeling nothing at all.
It was, in its own way, more frightening than tears would have been.
She recognized the sensation, distantly, as an old and familiar one — the specific, deliberate numbness she'd trained herself into years ago, in the aftermath of Adrian, a defensive shutdown so thorough it had once taken her weeks to feel anything again at full intensity. She'd thought, foolishly, that she'd outgrown the need for it. She'd thought, these past months with Leo, that she'd finally learned how to stay present through difficult feelings instead of retreating into cold, analytical distance.
Apparently, she thought, standing motionless in her own entryway, some old habits simply waited, patient and ready, for exactly this kind of crisis to reactivate themselves.
She moved through the following days in a careful, controlled fog. She didn't cry. She didn't call anyone. She turned her phone off entirely on the second day, unable to bear the possibility of a message from Leo — or worse, the silence of no message at all — and busied herself instead with the kind of relentless, joyless productivity that had once defined her entire pre-Leo existence: cleaning surfaces that didn't need cleaning, reorganizing files that didn't require reorganization, anything to keep her hands occupied and her mind safely, deliberately blank.
Her editor called twice, according to the voicemails that eventually accumulated once she finally turned her phone back on — enthusiastic messages about launch timelines and marketing copy that felt, listening to them now, like they belonged to some entirely different, more hopeful version of her life. She didn't call back. She couldn't yet summon the energy to sound excited about a book whose entire emotional core now felt like it might be built on a foundation that had just cracked wide open.
She saw him only once during that stretch of days — a chance encounter in the hallway, both of them apparently timing their trash disposal at the exact same unfortunate moment, and the sight of him nearly broke her carefully maintained composure entirely.
He looked hollowed out. Not angry, not even visibly hurt in any way she could easily categorize — simply empty, his usual warm, expressive face gone strangely flat, eyes carrying none of their familiar light. He nodded at her once, brief and distant, the exact careful, polite gesture of a stranger acknowledging another stranger in a shared space, and continued past her without another word.
Zoey stood frozen for a long moment after he'd gone, something cold and sick settling in her stomach at the sight of him so thoroughly diminished, and then, because some old, well-practiced part of her insisted it was the only safe response available, she straightened her spine, arranged her own expression into something equally distant, and continued on to the trash chute as though nothing at all had happened.
She told herself, walking back to her apartment, that this was fine. That distance was healthy. That she'd been right to protect herself, to draw a firm boundary after discovering something so significant had been kept from her for so long.
She almost believed it, for a few hours.
She spent that evening trying, unsuccessfully, to work on the final round of edits her publisher had sent back — small, minor tweaks to language and pacing that should have taken an hour, tops. Instead, she found herself staring at passages she'd once written with such easy, hopeful conviction — the fire alarm chapter, the hedgehog chapter, the entire, careful arc of a woman learning to trust again — and feeling, now, a nauseating dissonance between the words on the page and whatever had actually just happened between them in real life.
Was any of it even true, she found herself wondering, staring at a paragraph describing Leo's patience in the elevator after the office party, or did I just want it to be true badly enough that I stopped asking the harder questions?
She closed the laptop, unable to continue, and sat in the growing quiet of her apartment instead, replaying the confrontation over and over, examining it now with a distance the initial heat of anger hadn't allowed.
By evening, though, the careful, protective numbness had started to crack, small fissures of doubt working their way through her deliberate composure. She kept seeing his face in the hallway — that particular, hollow blankness, so unlike anything she'd witnessed from him before, even during the darkest days of his fever or his exhaustion over Marcus's ultimatum.
I did that, she thought, sitting alone in her darkened living room, the thought arriving with unwelcome, undeniable clarity. Whatever that emptiness was, in his eyes — I put it there.
She tried to push the thought away, tried to remind herself of the legitimate hurt underlying her own reaction, the real, valid feeling of discovering someone had known something significant about her and chosen silence over honesty.
But underneath that legitimate hurt, something else had started, quietly, insistently, to surface — the uncomfortable, unavoidable echo of her own words, replayed now with a clarity the heat of the argument hadn't allowed.
You and Adrian aren't so different.
She'd said that. To Leo. To the man who had spent months proving, in a hundred small, patient ways, exactly how different he was from anyone who had ever hurt her before.
She thought about all the specific, deliberate acts of care she'd catalogued in her own mind over the past several months — the faucet, fixed without demand for recognition. The pastries, left with no note attached. The hedgehog, made from careful observation rather than any obligation. The night he'd sat with her patience personified, waiting weeks for her to catch up to feelings he'd already named for himself. None of it, she realized now, sitting with the discomfort of the comparison, bore even the faintest resemblance to Adrian's calculated, self-serving patience — the kind that had always, eventually, revealed itself to be in service of something Adrian wanted rather than something he was freely offering.
She sat with the discomfort of that realization for a long time, resisting it, some stubborn, defensive part of her insisting that her anger had been justified, that the comparison, however harsh, had at least contained a kernel of legitimate truth.
But another part of her — quieter, more honest, harder to silence — kept returning to the specific, devastating look on Leo's face in that moment, the way something in him had simply stopped fighting the instant she'd invoked Adrian's name, as though she'd confirmed some deep, old fear he'd been carrying his entire life.
She rose eventually, moved to her desk, and opened the drawer where she kept the small black notebook — the one that had started as a case file on a suspected murderer and slowly, over months, become something else entirely.
She didn't take it out. She simply looked at it, sitting there in the dim light of her desk lamp, and found herself unable to decide whether reading back through its pages would offer clarity or simply deepen the growing, uncomfortable suspicion that she'd made a terrible mistake in a moment of old, unhealed fear.
She closed the drawer, unable to face it yet, and sat instead in the growing dark of her apartment, thinking about Leo's hollow, empty eyes in the hallway, and wondering, with mounting dread, exactly what she'd done.
Outside her window, across the narrow street, Leo's apartment remained dark far earlier than usual, the workshop light that had once glowed so warm and welcoming now nowhere in evidence at all — and Zoey sat there for a long time, watching the empty darkness where his light used to be, feeling, for the first time since the confrontation, the full, cold weight of exactly how much silence now stood between them.
