Zoey opened the drawer again the following morning, and this time, she didn't hesitate.
She carried the small black notebook to her desk, sat down, and opened it to the very first page — the one she'd written in the frantic, terrified aftermath of that first morning, before she'd known anything real about the man across the street at all.
Subject displays anomalous behavior, the entry read, in the careful, clinical handwriting she'd once used to disguise her own growing fascination as professional diligence. Cat exhibited immediate trust, contrary to established pattern.
She kept reading, moving forward through the months in slow, deliberate order — the entries about the faucet, the pastries, the hedgehog she'd tried so hard to categorize as evidence before finally, helplessly, admitting what it actually was. She found the crossed-out line from weeks ago — subject's smile was unusually — the word she'd never let herself finish writing, though she'd known, even then, exactly what it would have said.
Nice, she thought now, reading the abandoned sentence. His smile was unusually nice. That's what I couldn't let myself write.
She read through the entries documenting his patience — the note she'd made after he'd told her, so plainly, that he'd wait as long as it took for her to catch up to her own feelings. She found the page describing the hedgehog and strawberry figure, her own handwriting noticeably shakier in that entry than any before it, as though even the act of writing about it had overwhelmed her at the time.
She reached the entries from the workshop scene — brief, almost reverent in their brevity, as though she'd understood even then that some experiences resisted full documentation, that certain moments demanded to simply be felt rather than catalogued.
She continued forward, through pages that grew steadily less analytical and steadily more honest, watching her own handwriting slowly abandon its careful clinical detachment in favor of something warmer, more vulnerable, more true — until, by the later entries, the notebook had become less a case file and more a simple, unguarded record of a woman falling in love without quite admitting it to herself.
She reached the final entries — the ones about the workshop, about Leo's tears finally breaking free as she'd held him among his hundreds of careful, lonely figures — and felt her own eyes sting with unexpected tears at the memory, so clear and so recently, devastatingly complicated by everything that had happened since.
She closed the notebook for a moment, holding it against her chest, and let herself simply sit with the accumulated weight of the entire relationship laid bare in her own handwriting — every fear, every small, hard-won moment of trust, every piece of evidence that had, in the end, pointed toward exactly the opposite conclusion from the one she'd originally set out to prove.
He was never dangerous, she thought, the realization arriving with fresh, painful clarity. Not once. Not for a single day of any of this.
And into that thought, unbidden, came another voice entirely — one she hadn't heard clearly in months, though it had clearly been lurking somewhere in the back of her mind this entire time, waiting for exactly this kind of vulnerable moment to resurface.
Do em qua ngay tho thoi, Zoey.
Adrian's voice, calm and reasonable and utterly without remorse, the same voice that had once told her, standing in the wreckage of three years of careful lies, that her only real failing had been believing anyone could actually be as good as they seemed.
She sat with the memory for a long moment, letting it play out in full for what felt like the first time in years — not flinching away from it, not rushing past it toward safer thoughts, but actually examining it clearly, with the same careful attention she'd once brought to a stranger's suspicious notebook.
She remembered, with unusual clarity now, the exact expression on Adrian's face when she'd confronted him — not shame, not guilt, but a kind of weary, condescending patience, as though her hurt were simply an inconvenient overreaction to a situation he considered perfectly reasonable. He'd never once, in that entire final conversation, acknowledged that what he'd done was actually wrong. He'd simply reframed her devastation as her own failure to properly manage expectations.
He was wrong, she realized, slowly, the thought arriving with a clarity that felt almost physical in its impact. Adrian wasn't wrong because I was too trusting. He was wrong because he actually had something to hide. A wife. A child. An entire second life built on deliberate deception.
She thought about Leo — about the locked workshop door, about the months of patient, careful vulnerability it had taken him to finally open it, about the specific, devastating honesty of everything he'd shared with her once he finally trusted her enough to share it at all.
Leo never had a hidden family. He never had a second life. He had a room full of clay figures he was scared to show anyone, because people who were supposed to love him had told him they were worthless. That's not the same thing as Adrian's lies. That's not even close to the same thing.
She thought, too, about the specific difference in how each man had responded when confronted. Adrian had defended himself, had made her feel foolish for being hurt. Leo, when she'd thrown the harshest possible accusation at him, had simply gone quiet, had absorbed the blow without once trying to argue that she was wrong to feel however she felt — a silence she'd read, at the time, as guilt, but which she recognized now, with painful clarity, as something closer to a man who genuinely believed he might deserve every word of it.
She picked up her pen, opened the notebook to its final blank page, and began to write — not about Leo this time, not cataloguing his behavior or building any kind of case, but about herself, plainly, honestly, for what felt like the first time in the entire notebook's existence.
I think I've spent years protecting myself from a wound that already happened, instead of actually healing from it. I built an entire career on suspicion because it felt safer than trust. And when someone finally proved trustworthy — genuinely, consistently, extraordinarily trustworthy — I still found a way to punish him for an old crime someone else committed.
She paused, staring at the words, feeling something in her chest crack open with a fresh, different kind of grief.
Adrian was wrong because he had something real to hide. Leo's only crime was not knowing how to tell me something he barely understood himself — that I'd been scared of him, before I loved him. That's not manipulation. That's the exact same kind of fumbling, imperfect honesty I've been struggling with this entire time too.
She thought about all the times she herself had hesitated to tell Leo the truth of what she felt — the weeks of silence after the elevator confession, the retreat after the hedgehog conversation, every small, defensive pause where fear had won out over honesty. If withholding a difficult truth out of fear made someone comparable to Adrian, she realized with sudden, uncomfortable clarity, then she'd have to condemn herself by the exact same standard.
She closed the notebook slowly, holding it for a long moment, feeling the full weight of what she now understood settle over her — not just the recognition that she'd wronged Leo, but the deeper, more uncomfortable understanding that she'd repeated, almost exactly, the same defensive pattern that had once protected her from Adrian's genuine cruelty, applying it now to someone who had never actually earned that particular armor.
She thought about his face in the hallway — hollow, distant, so unlike the warm, patient man she'd fallen in love with — and felt a fresh wave of guilt and urgency rise in her chest.
I need to fix this, she thought, standing up abruptly, notebook still clutched in one hand. I need to go tell him he was right to trust me, even when I didn't trust myself enough to deserve it.
She moved toward her door, hand already reaching for the handle, before an old, familiar hesitation caught her — the specific, paralyzing fear that had kept her frozen in doorways and behind newspapers and inside locked emotional rooms for years now, the fear that speaking honestly might simply reveal, once and for all, that she'd damaged something too badly to repair.
She stood there for a long moment, hand on the doorknob, notebook clutched to her chest, caught between the clear, urgent knowledge of what she needed to do and the old, exhausting fear that had governed so much of her life until now.
She didn't open the door yet. Not quite yet.
But she stood there longer than she might have a week ago, hand steady on the handle, feeling something in her chest shift, slowly, toward the courage she knew she was going to need.
