The first thing Wren learned about controlling a body that wasn't quite hers was that it had opinions.
Not thoughts, exactly. Not a separate voice in her head arguing for different decisions. More like a current — a persistent directional pull, the way a river has a preferred direction even when you're trying to paddle sideways. Ira wanted to move forward. Ira wanted to close distance. Ira's entire physical architecture had been designed around the premise that the correct response to a threat was to go toward it, and Wren, who had spent twenty-two years in a body that defaulted to backing away from confrontation, found herself piloting something that was already halfway to the demon before she'd consciously decided to move.
"Okay," she said, through Ira's mouth, which produced a slightly different voice than she was used to — lower, with an edge that hadn't been there before. "Okay. We're doing this."
Ten feet to her right, Sera stood absolutely still.
This was the thing no one had warned her about — though, to be fair, no one had warned her about anything, and the entity responsible for her current situation had specifically declined to explain the downsides before sending her through. Sera was her. Wren was Sera, in the same way she was Ira, in the same way she was the general concept of a person standing in the ruins of a Dwarf village at what appeared to be approximately two in the morning by a pair of mismatched moons. But Sera was also idle, the way a computer is idle — present, running background processes, technically operational, and doing absolutely nothing useful because Wren's focus was elsewhere.
The System had called it a Dual Control Penalty.
What it looked like in practice was: one of her bodies was fighting and the other one was just standing there, in the middle of a demon attack, looking like an invitation.
The demon noticed.
It was the largest of the three — the one that had stepped out of the trees first, the one with the bored surveying expression of something that had been doing this for a long time and found the novelty had worn off several centuries ago. It looked at Ira, who was moving, who was clearly going to be a problem. Then it looked at Sera, who was not moving, who was standing very still with her arms slightly out from her sides and her eyes slightly unfocused in a way that probably read, from a demon's perspective, as either a threat display or a free hit.
It chose Sera.
The calculation was reasonable. Wren would have made the same one.
What happened next was less a decision and more a response — the kind of thing that bypasses the deliberating parts of the brain entirely and goes straight from perception to action with no paperwork in between. She felt the demon lunge toward Sera, felt it across the ten feet of nighttime air between her two bodies like a pull on something she hadn't known was there, and Ira was already moving before Wren had finished the thought *no.*
She hit the demon from the side.
Not gracefully. Not with any particular technique. Ira's body had STR 14 and VIT 13 and apparently a deep and abiding enthusiasm for physical impact, and what it did was slam into the demon's shoulder with the kind of commitment usually associated with people who have stopped thinking about consequences. The demon stumbled. Wren stumbled. They ended up approximately two feet apart, both surprised, in the narrow alley between two collapsed stone buildings.
The demon recovered first. It was bigger and had been doing this longer.
Wren recovered second, which meant she had about half a second to make a tactical assessment of her situation: Ira was bleeding from a scrape along her forearm where the demon's hide had caught her on the way in; Sera was now standing directly behind both of them, still idle, now somehow even more exposed than before; and the demon was looking at Wren with the revised attention of something that had just been inconvenienced and was updating its threat assessment accordingly.
"Great," Wren said. "Great start. This is fine."
The demon swung.
She ducked — or rather, Ira ducked, because Ira's body knew how to do that in a way Wren's original body had never particularly developed, and the swing passed over her head close enough that she felt the air displacement — and then she was inside the demon's guard and Ira's arms were doing something and the demon was making a sound that suggested the something had landed.
This was the other thing no one had warned her about: Ira knew how to fight.
Not in the way Wren knew how to do things — consciously, with effort, with the ongoing awareness that she was performing a skill she'd learned. Ira fought the way Wren breathed, or the way she'd caught herself humming songs she didn't remember choosing. The muscle memory was there, pre-loaded, part of whatever the class assignment had built into this body when it made it, and if Wren stopped trying to control every movement and just — let it — the results were substantially better than when she micromanaged.
She stopped micromanaging.
The first demon went down in approximately forty seconds, which was less impressive than it sounds given that forty seconds of sustained physical exertion is a very long time when someone is actively trying to break your bones, but also more impressive than Wren had expected given that she'd been a Nephilim for about four minutes.
She was still processing this when the other two demons walked out of the trees.
---
They came from different directions, which she suspected was intentional.
One from the north end of the village — similar build to the first, moving with the unhurried certainty of something that hadn't yet learned to be uncertain. One from the east, smaller but faster, already at a sprint before it fully cleared the treeline.
Two demons. Two bodies. The math was obvious. The execution was, it turned out, substantially harder than the math.
"Okay," Wren said, to herself, to both of herself, to the general situation. "Okay. Split up. You — " she was talking to Sera now, trying to push intention through whatever the connection between them was — "you do the magic thing. The staff. There's a staff."
Sera was holding a staff. Wren hadn't consciously noticed this until now. It was a pale wood staff with a crystal at the top that was currently emitting a faint silver glow that matched the runic marks on their arms, and Sera was holding it with both hands in a way that looked correct, the way someone holds a tool they know how to use.
Wren switched focus.
This was the Switch — the thing the System had listed as an intermediate skill, the ability to move primary control from one body to the other. What it felt like in practice was less like switching inputs on a monitor and more like trying to look at two things at once and choosing which one to bring into sharp focus while the other blurred into peripheral. She pushed her attention into Sera, felt the shift, felt Sera's hands on the staff and Sera's lungs breathing and Sera's eyes tracking the fast-moving demon coming from the east —
And Ira stopped.
Not fell. Not collapsed. Just — stopped. Mid-step, weight forward, arms in a position that suggested she'd been about to do something and had forgotten what. She stood in the middle of the village square looking like a very convincing statue of a person who had recently had thoughts.
The slower demon, the northern one, looked at Ira.
Ira looked back, with the blank expression of a screen in sleep mode.
The demon, demonstrating more tactical intelligence than Wren was prepared for, immediately changed direction toward Ira.
"No — " Wren pushed back into Ira, felt the snap of refocus, felt Ira lurch back into motion — and Sera's concentration broke, and the half-formed cast she'd been building in the staff crystal scattered into sparks, and the eastern demon was now fifteen feet away and closing —
"This," Wren said, through both mouths, at slightly different times, in slightly different tones, "is a design flaw."
*[System note: Dual operation at Sync Level 0% results in significant performance reduction for both active bodies. Recommend: focus control on one body until Sync thresholds are reached.]*
"I know that," she told the System. "I know that, that's what I was doing, and then there were two of them —"
*[Tip: Synchronized operation becomes easier with practice.]*
The eastern demon hit Sera from the side.
Not a killing blow — either because it hadn't intended one or because Sera's WIS-heavy statline gave her some passive defensive buffer Wren hadn't known about, but enough to knock her into the wall of a collapsed building and send the staff skidding across the rubble-strewn ground. Wren felt it in both bodies simultaneously: the impact through Sera's shoulder and the phantom empathy-flinch through Ira. The Soul Pool meter in the corner of her vision ticked down a fraction.
Ira was still engaged with the northern demon, trading blows with the kind of sustained aggression that was winning on points but burning through VIT.
Sera was on the ground with a bruised shoulder and no staff.
The eastern demon was standing over Sera, looking at her with an expression that Wren was rapidly learning to categorize as *threat reassessment in progress.*
What came out of Wren's mouth — out of both mouths, because she'd stopped being careful about which one was active — was a word that would have made her undergraduate academic advisor genuinely disappointed in her.
Then she stopped thinking and started doing.
---
The next three minutes were, in Wren's later and private assessment, the most chaotic she had ever experienced, which was saying something given that the previous four minutes had included dying and being split into two people.
What she did, because there was no other option and the System's suggestions had proven about as useful as a fire extinguisher manual in an active kitchen fire, was stop trying to operate both bodies correctly and start trying to operate both bodies *usefully.*
Ira didn't need direction. Ira needed permission.
What that looked like in practice: she stopped pushing intention at Ira entirely. She let the current run. Ira's body took over its own engagement with the northern demon with the fluid competence of something that had been built for exactly this, and Wren was there in the background, present, able to redirect if needed, but not steering every step. It was less like driving and more like being a very attentive passenger in a vehicle being operated by someone who knew the road better.
For Sera, she did the opposite: instead of trying to manage a complicated spell under pressure, she found the simplest thing the staff could do — a single focused burst of light, the magical equivalent of a flashbang, the kind of thing Sera's INT 15 could execute even half-distracted — and she did only that. Not well. But enough.
The eastern demon recoiled from the light.
Sera picked up the staff.
Ira put the northern demon down.
They turned, both of them, toward the remaining threat: the large one, the first one, the one that had started all of this by deciding to attend the specific ruined village that Wren had been deposited in. It was standing at the edge of the square now, and it was not attacking.
It was watching.
Wren became aware, with a slow cold clarity that had nothing to do with Ira's aggression instinct or Sera's analytical distance, that it had been watching for a while. While she'd been struggling with the Switch. While Sera had gone down. While she'd been swearing at the System. It had been watching and it had been waiting and it had the expression of something that was doing a very specific kind of math.
*It's waiting for me to run out,* she realized. *It knows about the penalty. It knows I'm burning through Soul every time I try to run both at once. It's just going to stand there until I'm too depleted to fight back.*
The Soul Pool meter confirmed this suspicion by ticking down another small fraction — not from damage, just from the ongoing cost of dual operation at minimal sync.
She had, by her estimate, maybe ten minutes before she was in serious trouble.
"Fine," Wren said. She was using Ira's voice because Ira felt like the right one for this sentence. "Fine. We do this on purpose then."
---
The plan was not a good plan.
She was the first to admit this, later, when she had the luxury of retrospect. It relied on the demon behaving predictably, on Sera managing to hold her concentration for longer than she had so far, and on Ira's combat instincts being trustworthy enough to execute a flanking approach without Wren steering every step. Two of these things were uncertain. The third was an opponent she'd known for approximately four minutes.
What she did: she moved Sera forward.
Not aggressively. Not fast. Just — forward, into the demon's line of sight, staff raised, in the posture of someone about to do something significant. A target. A visible, stationary, apparently-preparing-to-cast target, which was the kind of thing that demanded attention and response.
The demon looked at Sera.
Wren pushed into Ira and ran.
Ira went wide, hugging the wall of a collapsed building, moving in the direction that Ira's body instinctively understood as the correct angle — flanking, coming in from the side where the peripheral vision was worst, low and fast and committed. Wren felt the split in her attention like a rubber band being stretched, felt the Soul meter tick faster as she tried to maintain Sera's posture while running Ira on near-autopilot, felt the specific terror of watching through Sera's eyes as the demon's attention narrowed and it began to move toward her —
Ira hit it from the right.
The demon stumbled. Sera cast — not the flashbang this time, something more deliberate, a focused concussive force that caught the demon while it was off-balance and drove it sideways into the wall. Ira followed up with the kind of sustained assault that Ira's STR 14 and VIT 13 had been architected for, and the demon, for the first time since stepping out of the trees, seemed genuinely uncertain about how the next thirty seconds were going to go.
It wasn't clean. Ira took two more hits that she would feel tomorrow. Sera's cast left the staff crystal dark and warm, clearly on some kind of cooldown. The demon got in a strike that sent Wren's Soul meter into the yellow range and made both bodies stagger simultaneously, which was a deeply strange physical experience.
But the demon retreated.
Back to the treeline. Back into the dark. Whether it was tactical withdrawal or actual defeat she couldn't tell, and she found she didn't particularly care. It was gone. The other two were gone. The village square was quiet again, lit by two mismatched moons and the faint glow of cooling embers.
Wren sat down.
Both bodies sat down, which they did at slightly different times because her coordination was apparently the last thing to come back after adrenaline, and she sat there in two places simultaneously and felt the combined weight of two sets of exhausted muscles and one very tired consciousness that had been alive in this world for approximately twenty minutes.
The Soul Pool meter stabilized in the yellow range. Not critical. Recoverable.
The System pinged.
*[Skill unlocked: Rudimentary Dual Control Lv.1]* *[Simultaneous operation now possible with reduced stat penalty. Current penalty reduced from -50% to -35%.]* *[Note: Further reduction requires continued dual operation practice and Soul Sync development.]* *[You are doing better than the average first-night survival rate for Twinsoul class users.]* *[Average first-night survival rate: 23%.]*
Wren looked at this notification for a long moment.
"Twenty-three percent," she said, with Ira's voice, because Sera's was currently busy producing a sound that was somewhere between a laugh and a cough.
*[This statistic is based on a sample size of one, which is you, as you are the only recorded Twinsoul class user. The System acknowledges this renders the statistic technically meaningless.]*
*[You are still alive, which is the relevant outcome.]*
She looked up at the sky. The blue moon had moved. The red one hadn't, or had moved so slowly the difference was imperceptible. The stars continued their alien arrangements, indifferent to the events below them.
"D," Wren said, with both mouths, the voices emerging at slightly different pitches and staggered by almost exactly half a second, which was the kind of thing she was going to have to work on if she ever wanted to have a conversation without sounding like a broken audio file. "D, I want you to know that I genuinely, sincerely, from the bottom of one shared consciousness currently occupying two separate bodies — I hate you."
No response. She hadn't expected one. D had said he wouldn't be there when she woke up. He had, technically, kept that promise.
She put both sets of hands on both sets of knees and pushed both bodies upright.
---
Dawn came in stages, the way it does when the sky is doing something complicated.
The blue moon set first, sliding below the western treeline while the red one still hung in the east, which meant for about twenty minutes the light had a quality she didn't have a word for — half warm, half cool, the shadows going in two slightly different directions and then collapsing into one as the actual sun appeared above the hills and made both moons irrelevant.
Wren used the time to explore.
She sent Ira through the residential buildings on the northern side — the ones most intact, the ones that looked like they'd been evacuated rather than raided. She took Sera through the public structures in the center: the meeting hall, the forge, the building she'd tentatively identified as some kind of communal storage.
What she found, piece by piece, was a picture.
The storage building had been partially emptied in a systematic way — not ransacked, not looted, but *packed.* The things that remained were the heavy things, the awkward things, the things you leave when you're moving fast and can only take what you can carry. Tools with broken handles. Sacks with torn seams. A barrel of salted fish that was too large and too heavy for one person to move alone.
In one of the residential buildings, Ira found a child's boot, small, left behind near the doorway. Just one. As though it had come off in a hurry and there hadn't been time to go back for it.
In the meeting hall, Sera found the map.
It was nailed to the wall above what had been a large table — a working map, the kind a community uses and adds to over time, with annotations in at least three different handwriting styles and what appeared to be a route marked in red that ran east-southeast from the village toward a cluster of symbols that she tentatively read as *settlement* or *town* or possibly *somewhere with walls.* The map was old. The red line was less old — the ink had a different quality, and when Sera held the glowing staff crystal close, the color was still vivid rather than faded.
Someone had drawn that line recently. Maybe the night of the evacuation.
Wren stood in both bodies for a moment, Ira in the doorway of the residential building with the boot in her hands, Sera in the meeting hall with the map, and she thought about the picture this made.
They hadn't been caught by surprise. Or not entirely. They'd had *some* warning, enough to pack the portable things, enough to move the people — because there were no bodies, no signs of a last stand, just the systematic leaving-behind of everything that wouldn't travel — and someone had drawn a route on the map, which meant someone had known where to go.
There was a town. A town that the Dwarves of this village knew about and had apparently decided was safer than here.
She couldn't tell how far. The scale on the map was marked in symbols she didn't recognize yet, though she suspected the System would help with that once she'd been alive long enough to develop a Language skill or whatever the equivalent was. But there was a direction. East-southeast. Toward whatever the cluster of symbols meant.
Wren took the map off the wall — carefully, because it tore slightly at the corner where one of the nails had gone through the paper — and rolled it up and put it in the inside pocket of Sera's jacket, which turned out to have a useful number of pockets for a garment that looked like it had been assembled from ambient divine energy and good intentions.
She walked both bodies out of their respective buildings and stood them in the square in the growing morning light.
Two sets of eyes. Two sets of lungs, breathing the same smoky post-battle air. One map, one direction, one very approximate plan.
She was going to need to learn how to be two people in a world that had been expecting one. She was going to need to figure out how to walk into a town as a Nephilim — which was, based on everything D had implied, not a category that generated warm welcomes — and find whoever the Dwarves had gone to, and figure out what came next.
She was going to need, at some point, to sleep, which was a logistical problem she was actively not thinking about yet.
But she was alive. Both of her. Twenty minutes into a world that had an average first-night survival rate of twenty-three percent for her class, which was a meaningless statistic based on a sample size of one, but she chose to find it encouraging anyway.
"Okay," said Wren, with both mouths, the timing slightly better than it had been an hour ago. Not synchronized yet. But closer.
She started walking east-southeast.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The first thing Wren learned about controlling a body that wasn't quite hers was that it had opinions.
