The problem with having two bodies, Wren discovered on the morning of her first full day alive, was that everything came in pairs.
This seemed obvious in retrospect. She'd known, intellectually, since the moment the System panel had split into two floating windows in her dual field of vision, that she was now operating twice the standard allocation of human — or human-adjacent — biological machinery. What she hadn't fully processed was what that meant at the level of basic logistics.
Hunger: doubled. Not twice as urgent in a way that could be averaged out, but two separate and distinct experiences of hunger happening simultaneously, each demanding independent resolution. Ira's hunger was a low animal urgency, uncomplicated, the kind of sensation that came with a clear behavioral prescription attached. Sera's hunger was more diffuse, easier to ignore, the kind that would quietly undermine concentration for hours before announcing itself as a problem.
Thirst: also doubled, and more immediately pressing because the combat the previous night had burned through fluids in ways Wren was only now cataloguing.
Feet: four. Four feet with four subtly different natural gaits, because Ira's body had a slightly longer stride and a tendency to lead with the left shoulder, and Sera's body had a habit of placing its feet more carefully, picking paths rather than committing to them. Walking in parallel, which seemed like the obvious approach, produced the visual effect of two people who had met on a path and were now engaged in the specific social awkwardness of being headed in the same direction without being quite sure whether they were walking together or separately.
Wren had spent the first hour of the morning trying to find a configuration that felt natural.
She had not found one yet.
"We're the same person," she told both bodies, which was both true and increasingly the kind of statement that fell apart the more she examined it. "Just — walk."
Ira walked, with the ground-covering efficiency of a body that had been built for sustained movement.
Sera walked, picking her way around a root that Ira had stepped directly over without noticing.
Neither of them commented on this, because Wren was both of them and she was choosing not to comment on it. She kept moving east-southeast, following the red line on the map that Sera had tucked into her jacket's inside pocket, and she thought about breakfast.
The landscape was not immediately helpful on the subject of breakfast. The forest through which the road — such as it was, more of a track, a deliberate absence of trees rather than an intentional construction — wound was old-growth in a way that suggested the local ecology had been doing what it wanted for a very long time without particular regard for human convenience. There were plants she didn't recognize and couldn't assess for edibility, and mushrooms that might have been nutritious or might have been the last thing she ever ate, and at one point a cluster of berries in a color that didn't exist in any foraging guide from her previous world and therefore couldn't be evaluated on any prior knowledge.
She left the berries alone.
The stream she found approximately forty minutes into the morning walk was, by contrast, exactly what she needed. It was clear, cold, running over stones in the manner of water that had not been exposed to whatever had turned the village into ruins, and Wren knelt both bodies at the bank and drank with the unself-conscious urgency of someone who had been awake for approximately twelve hours, had fought three demons, and had walked several miles on an empty stomach.
The water was cold enough to ache. She didn't care.
She was still drinking — Ira had finished and was looking upstream with the alert scanning expression of a body that treated every quiet moment as potential threat intelligence, while Sera cupped water into her hands for a third time — when the System chimed.
*[Soul Pool threshold reached: 87% — Full interface access now available.]* *[Recommend reviewing class parameters prior to next engagement.]* *[Tutorial content has been queued since initialization. Display now?]*
Wren sat back on her heels, both sets of them, and looked at the notification.
"Yes," she said. "Absolutely yes. Where was this twelve hours ago."
*[Tutorial was unavailable during active demonic incursion. System apologizes for the inconvenience.]*
*[Beginning Class Overview: Twinsoul — Wrath & Wisdom.]*
---
The class description was long.
This was the first thing she noticed — that whoever had written the System documentation for Twinsoul had apparently anticipated that the user would have questions, because the entry ran to something approximating several pages if she were reading it on a screen, scrolling through layers of text that expanded when she focused her attention on particular sections. She read it sitting at the edge of the stream with both bodies in configurations that were comfortable rather than tactical, which felt like progress.
The mechanical summary she more or less already knew: Soul Pool, the shared resource that both bodies drew from. Dual Control Penalty, currently at −35% down from −50% after last night's unlock. Sync Level, the underlying metric that governed how efficiently the two bodies could operate together, currently listed as 3% which was apparently enough to have unlocked the one skill she'd managed so far. Distance Strain, which began accruing additional Soul costs at approximately fifty meters of separation and scaled upward from there.
The progression section was where it got interesting.
*[Sync Level increase: Twinsoul Sync Level does not increase through combat experience alone. Sync Level reflects the degree of integration between the user's two physical instantiations and advances through shared experience milestones — activities performed simultaneously by both bodies that require coordination, mutual awareness, or parallel engagement with a common stimulus.]*
*[Examples of Sync-positive activities: synchronized locomotion, shared sensory focus, parallel task completion, combat in coordinated roles, extended co-presence without divergent focus.]*
*[Note: Sync Level advancement is not linear. Early levels advance quickly through basic coordination milestones. Later levels require sustained integration across multiple domains of experience — physical, cognitive, and interpersonal. The System cannot define 'interpersonal' Sync triggers in advance; these emerge from the specific context of the user's existence.]*
Wren read this last paragraph twice.
*Interpersonal Sync triggers.* The System couldn't define them in advance. They emerged from context.
She filed this under things to think about later and kept reading.
The skill tree was displayed as a branching structure, more organic than she'd expected — less a grid of unlockable boxes and more a map of possibilities that radiated outward from a central point. The central point was labeled *[Core: Shared Consciousness]* and was already filled in, because apparently existing as a Twinsoul at all was the prerequisite. From it, branches spread in three directions.
The first branch was labeled *Physical Integration.* It ran: Ambulation Sync → Reflex Sharing → Combat Resonance → Dual Cognition → and then a locked node she couldn't read yet, its label obscured.
The second branch was *Sensory Integration:* Peripheral Awareness → Soul Resonance Reading → and several locked nodes beyond.
The third branch was *Cognitive Integration,* which contained skills she didn't fully understand yet, with names like *Parallel Processing* and *Echo Memory* and one called simply *[Convergence]* at the very end, which the System declined to describe further at this stage.
She noticed that Soul Resonance Reading was already unlocked — it had appeared in her skills last night, after the combat, after Liora—
After nothing. There was no Liora yet. She'd unlocked it in combat, when Ira had been grabbed and she'd felt something from the demon. She'd just, for a moment, been thinking about something that hadn't happened yet.
She shook both heads slightly and kept reading.
The note about Soul Resonance was in a subsection at the end of the class overview, under a heading that read *Passive Effects.*
*[Soul Resonance (passive, Lv.1 — active): At current Sync Level, this skill operates passively during sustained physical contact. At higher Sync Levels, the range of perception may increase beyond contact range. The user will perceive emotional states as a secondary overlay on standard sensory input — not precise emotion identification, but a general impression of affective state. This effect cannot be disabled. Users are advised to develop discretion regarding the information this skill provides.]*
*[Note: The System does not consider emotional perception to be an invasion of privacy in the context of the Twinsoul class function. The System acknowledges that affected individuals may disagree.]*
Wren stared at this notification for a long time.
"Users are advised to develop discretion," she repeated, to the stream, which continued flowing without offering an opinion.
She thought about what that meant. Someone she touched — or who touched her, or who made sustained contact with either body — and she'd get an impression of how they were feeling. Not words. Not specific thoughts. Just a sense of the emotional weather. Without their knowledge or consent. Without any way to turn it off.
The System's note that affected individuals might disagree was doing a remarkable amount of heavy lifting in that paragraph.
"Great," said Wren. "That's a completely normal thing to just have. Totally fine."
She closed the class overview and stood both bodies up.
---
The ambulation problem, she decided, could be solved scientifically.
The skill was called *[Ambulation Sync]* and its unlock condition was listed as: *[Two bodies maintain coordinated locomotion for a cumulative distance sufficient to establish motor pattern recognition across the Shared Consciousness interface.]*
Which translated, as best she could interpret, to: walk together until it feels natural.
She started trying to synchronize consciously, which immediately made it worse in the way that trying to consciously regulate breathing makes breathing feel strange and effortful. She focused on Ira's stride. Ira's stride was fine; Ira's stride was confident and ground-covering. She tried to make Sera match it, and Sera's body resisted in the way that bodies resist being asked to walk at a pace that doesn't match their natural cadence.
She tried the other direction: matching Ira to Sera's more careful pace. Ira found this deeply unsatisfying in a way that communicated itself as a low-level restlessness, an itch in the legs that wasn't quite discomfort but wasn't quite not-discomfort.
She tried not thinking about it, which worked until she started thinking about not thinking about it.
The forest continued, patient and indifferent.
She was approximately twenty minutes into this experiment, making reasonable if not spectacular progress on the ambulation problem, when it happened: a stretch of flat path, even footing, no roots or rocks requiring navigation, and both bodies found a rhythm without being directed to. Not Ira's rhythm or Sera's rhythm but something in between — a pace that neither body was perfectly designed for but both bodies could sustain comfortably, a shared compromise that felt, for fifteen or twenty steps, genuinely effortless.
The Sync meter ticked upward by a sliver.
*[Ambulation Sync: 1%]* *[Progress toward Lv.1 milestone: 12%]*
Wren stopped, which broke the rhythm immediately, but she needed a moment to process what had just happened.
It was such a small thing. A fraction of a percent. Fifteen steps in a forest on the first full day of her second life. And yet the sensation that accompanied it had been — she searched for the right word and found that she didn't quite have one from her existing vocabulary. The closest she could get was *coherent.* For fifteen steps, she had been coherent in a way she hadn't been since the world split in two.
Like two instruments that had been playing in the same key but slightly out of tune, and then for a moment had hit the same note exactly.
She stood there on the path, Ira and Sera both still, both breathing, and she thought: *so that's what it's supposed to feel like.*
Then she started walking again, and paid attention to the rhythm instead of trying to force it, and found that it came back faster than it had the first time.
---
The mutant deer appeared in the late afternoon, and Wren had been expecting something like it.
Not the deer specifically — she hadn't been expecting a cervid the size of a small horse with supplementary antlers growing from what appeared to be its shoulder blades, which was an evolutionary choice she had many questions about. But she'd been walking through a world that had clearly decided standard animal morphology was a suggestion rather than a requirement, and the surliness of the local demon population suggested that the ambient whatever-made-things-like-this-happen was running high.
The deer was standing in the middle of the path.
It looked at Ira first. Then it looked at Sera. Then it looked at Ira again, with the careful re-examination of an animal that had a specific model of what predators looked like and was finding that its data required updating.
Ira had gone very still, in the particular way of a body that contained predator instincts and was currently deciding whether to act on them. The hunger that had been a background presence all day sharpened into something more specific and directional. Ira's hands, Wren noticed, had shifted position slightly without her consciously directing them to.
Sera, meanwhile, had stopped walking and was looking at the deer with the expression of someone who had found something interesting and was trying to observe without disturbing it. Wren felt, through Sera's sensory input, a kind of detached fascination — the shoulder antlers, the unusual joint structure in the deer's hindquarters that suggested a different range of motion than standard ungulate design, the way the animal's eyes tracked both bodies with evident confusion about whether it was looking at one threat or two.
Wren was in the middle of this: hungry enough that Ira's assessment of the situation had a certain practical appeal, intellectually interested enough that she understood Sera's reluctance to interrupt an observation, and aware that the deer itself was currently doing its own calculations.
The deer made its decision before she made hers.
It looked at Sera one final time — at the staff, maybe, or at the silver glow of the runic marks, or perhaps just at the general quality of Sera's attention, which was the kind of focus that deer had probably learned to associate with trouble — and bolted. Not toward Ira, not away from Ira, but sideways off the path and into the undergrowth with a crashing of branches that faded quickly into distance.
Ira's predator instincts subsided, leaving behind a mild sense of opportunity lost.
Sera watched the place where the deer had disappeared for a moment, and Wren felt the detached fascination shift into something that was either disappointment or simple completion — the end of an observation, the way a sentence ends.
"Well," Wren said, to the path, to both of herself, to the deer that was no longer present to hear it. "That's probably fine."
---
She found the campsite by working backwards from requirements.
She needed shelter from potential rain — the clouds coming in from the west had the look of clouds that had opinions about precipitation. She needed a defensible position, or something approximating one, because the night had taught her that the local demon population operated primarily after dark and she would prefer not to repeat the experience of being surrounded. She needed to be close enough to the path to hear traffic, because the map suggested she was within a day or two of the town and there might be other travelers.
The rock formation she found an hour before sunset checked most of these boxes: a broad shelf of stone that jutted from the hillside above the path, high enough to provide a view of the approach from two directions, with an overhang sufficient to provide cover against rain if she positioned herself correctly. The climb to it was manageable for Ira and manageable for Sera by different methods, which she found interesting — Ira went up quickly and directly, and Sera found the handholds methodically before committing to each one.
She settled both bodies on the shelf as the sun went down.
The sleeping problem she'd been thinking about since morning turned out to be less of a problem than she'd anticipated, which she attributed partly to the fact that she'd thought about it for long enough to approach it practically rather than anxiously.
Two bodies could not sleep simultaneously, not fully — there was always a background level of awareness in whichever body was resting more lightly, a kind of watchful idling that wasn't quite consciousness but wasn't absence either. What this meant in practice was that she could rest Ira deeply while Sera maintained a passive monitoring state, and then cycle — let Sera descend toward proper sleep while Ira's background awareness held the perimeter.
She'd been worried about this. She wasn't, anymore.
*I will never be completely unguarded,* she thought. It was the kind of thought that could be frightening, about always having some part of yourself awake, never fully letting go. But lying on the rock shelf with two sets of eyes looking up at two moons that had become, over the course of one day, slightly more familiar than they'd been at dawn, it felt less like a constraint and more like a feature. Like having a nightlight, but the nightlight was also her.
She thought about the Sync milestone — the fifteen steps where it had worked. She thought about the skill tree and its unlocked and locked branches, and the note about interpersonal Sync triggers that the System couldn't define in advance. She thought about Soul Resonance Reading and what it would mean to receive that information from someone without their knowledge, and whether there was a way to be ethical about a skill she couldn't disable.
She thought: *I am going to need to figure out how to be a person. Possibly two persons. Definitely at least one.*
She fell asleep — partly, in the distributed way that Twinsoul apparently managed sleep — and the moons moved overhead, and the forest was quiet, and for the first time since dying she had something that resembled rest.
---
Sera heard it first.
The sound came from below and to the left, from the direction of the path — a low, complex sound that resolved, as she came more fully awake, into separate components: wheels on uneven ground; the particular rhythm of hooves at a careful walk; and voices, more than one, speaking in tones that were deliberately quiet in the way of people trying not to be overheard.
Not shouting. Not combat sounds. Human voices, or something close to human, engaged in what sounded like cautious conversation at a volume just above a whisper.
Wren surfaced into fuller consciousness across both bodies, the transition slightly ragged — Ira came awake fast and alert, Sera more gradually, and for a moment she experienced the disorientation of being at two different stages of wakefulness simultaneously.
She crawled to the edge of the rock shelf and looked down.
The path was visible in the moonlight — the red moon was high and generous with its light, the blue one setting behind the western hills. Moving along it, headed east-southeast in the same direction she'd been walking all day, was a small convoy: four wagons of varying sizes, drawn by animals that weren't quite horses but were doing a convincing impression of them, attended by a cluster of figures walking alongside. No torches, no lanterns. Moving in available darkness by available moonlight.
She couldn't make out details at this distance, at this light level. She couldn't tell if they were the Dwarves from the evacuated village or something else entirely. She couldn't tell what they were transporting or where they were going beyond the general agreement with her own direction.
What she could tell: they were not demons. They were using wheels and draft animals and low voices, which were three things demons had shown no inclination toward in her limited sample size. They were moving carefully, in the manner of people who had reasons to be careful. And they were headed toward whatever the cluster of symbols on her map meant.
Ira wanted to go down immediately. The social instinct in that body was not subtle — it expressed itself as a simple directional pull toward other living things, the opposite of the fight-instinct but with similar urgency.
Sera was more cautious. Sera was running probability assessments, or something that felt like probability assessments, a quieter kind of processing.
Wren lay on her stomach on the rock shelf and watched the convoy until it had moved past her position and continued down the path, its sounds fading gradually into the night sounds of the forest.
She thought about D's instruction to be a variable, and about Nephilim not being automatically conscripted into either army, and about the fact that she had been awake in this world for less than twenty-four hours and already needed to make a decision about whether to approach strangers.
She thought: *morning. Wait until morning, when you can see their faces and they can see yours, and everyone can assess the situation in full light and make an informed choice about whether to panic.*
It was, she thought, the most sensible plan she'd had since dying.
She settled back into the distributed half-sleep that was apparently her new normal, and let the forest sounds cover the fading hoofbeats, and waited for her second morning to arrive.
You've reached the end of this chapter
