She woke before Liora.
This was not unusual — she often surfaced from the distributed-rest state earlier, the dual-body configuration requiring a different kind of maintenance than single-body sleep, which meant she was frequently awake in the specific pre-dawn grey that belonged to no one in particular. What was different this morning was what she did with it.
She lay still and took inventory.
Not the threat-assessment inventory — the other kind. The kind that required checking what was actually present rather than what was approaching. She did this methodically, the way she did most things: starting with what she knew for certain, moving to what she thought was probably true, ending with what she hadn't yet determined.
What she knew: mechanism is internal. Convergence threshold approximately twenty-eight percent. Her current Sync Level is nineteen. Survivability: diminishment, not death. Forty to sixty percent reduction. Recovery over fifteen to twenty years. The conditions advancing her toward threshold are the conditions of the past thirty days. Those conditions are, at least in part, in the room with her.
What she thought was probably true: Liora was telling her everything now. The pattern had fired and been named and was being actively interrupted. The one-second answer was real. The leaf was real. The third notebook was real.
What she hadn't yet determined: whether she wanted to do this. Whether the work was hers to do. What diminishment would actually feel like from the inside, not as a category but as a life. Whether she would recognize herself in it.
She looked at both ceilings, which were the same ceiling, and thought: there is a lot being held right now. This is what it feels like to hold a lot. It's not crushing. It's just heavy, and heavy things require more care in how you carry them.
Across the room, Liora's breathing had the specific quality of actual sleep — not the road-rest pattern, not the inn-room-alertness she'd had in new places early in the journey. Proper sleep. Even. Unhurried.
She had slept well. After yesterday.
Wren thought: that says something. Not what it would have said two months ago — it wasn't the sleep of someone who had handled a difficult thing and moved past it. It was the sleep of someone who had said the accurate thing and received an accurate response and was now resting in the specific way of people who have been honest.
She thought: I believe that. I believe her.
She thought: I also haven't forgiven her.
She thought: both of those are true and I'm holding both.
---
Liora woke with her usual efficiency — the immediate orientation, the eyes-open assessment. She looked at the room. She looked at Wren.
"Did you sleep?" she said.
"Some."
"Because?"
"I was thinking."
Liora sat up. She didn't reach for either notebook, which Wren noticed. The morning mode since Careveth had been: no notebooks immediately, let the morning be the morning. Even today. Even after yesterday.
"About the mechanism or about us?" Liora asked.
Wren looked at her. "Both. They're connected."
"Yes," Liora said. "They are."
A moment — the specific moment of two people taking the measure of where they were. Not awkward. Not warm, the way it had been warming steadily through the Halveth days. Something more honest than warmth: the temperature of two people who were not pretending to be somewhere other than where they were.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Liora said.
"Not yet. I need more time with it."
"Okay." No elaboration. No hurt visible in the word. Just: received, acknowledged, space given.
Wren looked at her. She thought: that's the right response. Not performing absence of curiosity — she was clearly curious. But holding the curiosity in the way that didn't press.
She thought: that's what she does when she's not afraid. When she's not running the pattern.
She thought: this is what it looks like.
---
Maren wanted a morning meeting.
Not a continuation of yesterday's emotional terrain — operational briefing. The Accord's current positioning in the eastern corridor. Lyssandria's search patterns following Wren's departure from Karath. What the intelligence picture looked like for Halveth specifically, and how long it was reasonable to stay before the risk profile changed.
They went to the bookshop. Casven brought tea. Maren was already there with a different notebook than yesterday — this one was maps and movement data rather than case documentation. The shift was legible. This was the other part of the work.
Wren listened.
She listened differently than she had in Karath, when the context had been: stranger with information, uncertain what she was walking into. She listened differently than she had in the early Halveth days, when the context had been: approaching something that would require a decision. Now the information was landing in a different register — not threat-assessment primary, not decision-prep anxiety. Something more like: data being gathered by someone who was figuring out what they wanted to do with it.
She thought: this is what agency feels like from the inside. Not the absence of information or pressure. The presence of the sense that the information and the pressure are mine to work with rather than things happening to me.
Liora was making notes in the research notebook — efficiently, the compressed handwriting, the cross-references. She was also contributing: adding clarifying questions at two points, correcting one of Maren's assumptions about Accord communication routes based on something she'd read in Casven's library. The collaboration was lateral. Natural.
Wren watched this and thought: she's not managing me. She's doing her work, in my presence, and occasionally it intersects with mine. That's the right kind of parallel.
After an hour, Maren closed the operational notebook. "Three more days here is defensible," she said. "After that the risk profile starts to shift. I'd recommend having a direction in mind by then."
Wren thought: three days. That's reasonable.
She thought: I'll know more in three days.
---
"I need to go alone for a while," Wren said, when they were back on the street.
Liora looked at her. The same look as yesterday's *okay* — not absence of feeling, but presence of the right kind of space.
"All right," she said.
"An hour. Maybe slightly more. Meet at the lunch place."
"I'll be there."
Wren looked at her for a moment. She thought: I'm leaving and she's not running the departure calculation. She's not beginning the two-weeks-in-advance withdrawal because she can tell that this is Wren needing space to think, not Wren going. She knows the difference.
She thought: that's also something.
She went.
---
Halveth alone had a different texture.
[Peripheral Awareness] ran its continuous spatial tracking. [Partial Soul Sync] maintained the ambient Ira-signal in the background. The threat-profile was manageable — she had the Accord intelligence from this morning, knew which routes were cleaner, knew approximately what Lyssandria's current sweep pattern looked like. She was not in immediate danger.
She was just: thinking. Walking and thinking, the way she'd discovered in Karath that walking helped — something about the forward motion requiring enough background processing that the deliberate thinking became more focused rather than circular.
She thought about *do you want this.*
Not as abstraction. As: if you knew you would survive intact, would you do this. If Convergence carried no cost, if the threshold were tomorrow, if the mechanism application were guaranteed to work and you'd wake up on the other side with everything you had — would you do it.
She thought about the ruined village. The first night, the System informing her that the tutorial was unavailable due to active demonic incursion. She'd thought at the time: this is the world I've been dropped into. She'd been learning, since then, what it actually was — not just ruined villages, not just demon incursions, but the background radiation of two divine factions running a self-perpetuating war that produced these effects as a byproduct. The cost wasn't just Wren's life. The cost was ongoing, distributed across everyone who lived in this world.
She thought about Liora. Expelled because her research approached something that someone with power had decided shouldn't be approached. Three years and eleven cities, building toward a solution to something that had been running for centuries.
She thought: if I knew I'd survive, the answer is probably yes.
Then she thought about the second question.
If you knew you wouldn't survive — if Convergence carried an unsurvivable cost, if diminishment meant something more permanent — would you still.
She sat with that one for a long time.
She didn't have the answer. It was too large and she hadn't carried it long enough.
But she noticed something: the question didn't feel like a wall. It felt like a question she could actually look at, which was different from how it would have felt two weeks ago when survivability was still an abstraction.
She thought: I can hold this question. I don't have the answer yet. But I can hold it without it becoming the only thing.
She thought about what holding it required. In Pennsylvania she would not have been able to do this — she would have converted the question into a smaller, more manageable version, something that didn't require sitting with full uncertainty. Something like: *well I'll deal with it when it comes.* The Pennsylvania avoidance was efficient. It let her function. It also meant she'd spent years not asking the real questions because the real questions were too large.
She thought: I've been learning to hold larger things.
She thought: this is the largest one yet. But I have practice now.
She found a bench. Not the garden — just a public bench in a plaza with the ordinary Halveth late-morning around it. She sat.
She thought: the answer to the first question is probably yes. The answer to the second question I don't know. The actual situation is somewhere in between — survivable diminishment, long recovery, uncertain variables. Not the easy version and not the worst version.
She thought: I need more information. Not more from Maren — she has what Maren has. Information from the process of moving toward it.
She thought: I need to know what the Sync Level trajectory looks like. How fast I'm actually advancing. What the realistic timeline is. Whether the conditions that have been advancing it are stable or whether they're contingent on things she can't guarantee. Whether there's anything about how she lives in the next several months that would make the difference between two years and five.
She thought: those are questions that require someone with access to the research and willingness to share it accurately.
She thought: Liora could help me figure that out.
She thought: I'm going to ask her.
She sat for a while longer on the bench in the ordinary Halveth plaza. Ira was tracking a vendor across the square who was having an involved negotiation with a customer. Sera was watching the light on the building opposite. Both of her, in the same space, doing the same thinking from two different angles.
She thought: this is what I'd lose. Not the two bodies — those persist. The integration. The ambient parallel that had become the texture of existing. The radio station at the edge of reception that told her where Ira was without having to look.
She thought: fifteen to twenty years of that going intermittent rather than continuous.
She thought: I'd still be myself. Reduced but myself.
She thought: I don't know yet if that's acceptable. But I can ask the question without it flattening me.
She thought: that's progress. That's real progress, not the performed kind.
---
Liora was already at the lunch place when Wren arrived, which was what she'd said she would be. Third notebook in hand, not the research one — she was writing something about the plaza she'd been sitting in, probably, the specific quality of the light or the way the buildings caught it.
She looked up when Wren came in. Not with the searching expression of someone who had been waiting anxiously. With the expression of someone who had been doing their own thing and was now noting the arrival.
"On time," she said.
"I said an hour."
"You did." She closed the third notebook. "How was the thinking?"
Wren sat down across from her. "Productive."
"What does productive mean in this context?"
"It means I have a clearer sense of where I am with it." Wren looked at her. "Not a decision. But a direction."
"Do you want to tell me?"
Wren thought about it. She thought: I said I'd tell her the process. That was what she'd offered last night and not yet followed through on. The context felt right now — the lunch place, midday, the operational briefing behind them and the afternoon ahead.
"Yes," she said. "After we eat."
Liora opened the menu with the efficient motion of someone who had already decided what was interesting about it. "All right," she said.
They ate. The conversation was light — not performed lightness, the genuine version of two people who had other things to process and were allowing the meal to be a meal rather than forcing it to carry more than that. Liora mentioned something about the architectural feature visible from their table. Wren noticed something about a pattern in the floor tiles. Neither of them talked about yesterday, or Maren, or the mechanism.
The food was good. The lunch was a lunch.
---
"I think I want to do it," Wren said, when the food was cleared. "That's the direction. Not the decision — I haven't decided. But when I ask myself whether I want to, the answer that's forming is yes."
Liora looked at her.
"The war is real," Wren said. "The cost of it continuing is real. I've seen enough of it to know that. And I'm apparently the specific variable that could end it." She paused. "That's not nothing. I don't want to perform indifference to that because I'm the one who'd be paying the cost."
"No," Liora said. "It's not nothing."
"But I haven't decided the *when.*" Wren looked at her. "And I think the *when* matters more than the *whether* right now. Because I'm at nineteen percent. I'm not at threshold. And the question I actually need to answer is: what does the realistic path to threshold look like, and what do I want my life to look like along that path."
Liora was listening. Pen down — not the flat gesture of making deliberate space, just: not writing, attending.
"I need help figuring out the trajectory," Wren said. "The rate of Sync Level advancement, what factors affect it, whether there's anything that would change the timeline significantly." She looked at Liora. "You know more about the Accord research on this than anyone who's actually willing to tell me. And you have access to case documentation that I don't."
"Yes," Liora said.
"I'm asking you to work on that with me," Wren said. "Not to tell me what to decide. To help me understand what I'm actually deciding about."
Liora looked at her for a long moment. Something in the expression that was not the fourth expression but was close to it — at ease, but with more weight in it. The expression of someone receiving something they weren't certain they'd be offered.
"Yes," she said. "I'll do that."
Wren looked at her. She thought: I just asked the person who withheld information from me to help me understand the information. She thought about whether that was naive.
She thought: no. Because what she withheld was what she was afraid would drive me away. What I'm asking for is what she knows. Those are different categories. The fear was the failure. The knowledge is still the knowledge.
She thought about the research notebook this morning — Maren's briefing, Liora adding clarifying questions, correcting an assumption. The precision that was just her nature, applied to everything she touched. Three years and eleven cities building toward exactly this problem.
She thought: I'm not naive for wanting the best available expert. I'm practical.
She thought: I'm also asking her specifically because she's here and because I want her here. Both of those are also true.
She thought: I'm not setting aside what happened. I'm continuing past it. Those aren't the same thing.
"One condition," Wren said.
"Name it."
"If you encounter any information that's relevant to my decision and you're tempted to hold it because you're afraid of how I'll respond — you tell me anyway."
Liora looked at her. "Yes," she said. Not quickly — not the instant answer. With the deliberate weight of someone making a commitment they intend to keep. "I will."
"Okay," Wren said.
"Okay," Liora said.
The lunch place was doing its midday things around them. Outside, Halveth continued to be Halveth. Three more days here, Maren had said. Three days to figure out the next direction.
Wren thought: we're working on it.
She thought: *we* again. Still present. Still changing shape.
She thought: that's enough for now. More than enough.
Outside, the Halveth afternoon continued. Three more days here. Three days to figure out the next direction.
She thought: I've been afraid of the deciding for weeks. But the deciding is actually — better than the not-knowing. The not-knowing had no edges. The deciding has edges. You can work with edges.
She thought: I'm working with edges now.
She thought: that's a different kind of person than the one who arrived at the ruined village thirty-one days ago.
She thought: both of her. Both of her were working with edges now. That was new. That was real.
She lay back — not sleep, just rest — and let the inn room be the inn room, and let the distance between the two beds be exactly what it was, and let tomorrow be tomorrow. Tomorrow had three more days in it, and then a direction, and that was enough structure for one evening.
You've reached the end of this chapter
She woke before Liora.
This was not unusual — she often surfaced from the distributed-rest state earlier, the dual-body configuration requiring a different kind of maintenance than single-body sleep, which meant she was frequently awake in the specific pre-dawn grey that belonged to no one in particular.
