Liora was already at the table when Wren surfaced from distributed-rest.
Not reading — working. The research notebook was open and spread with additional sheets, the ones she used when a problem required more lateral space than the notebook's standard pages allowed. Ink on three separate surfaces. The compressed handwriting of someone who had been at this for a while.
Wren looked at her from the bed and thought: this is different from the research sessions in Karath. Different from the Halveth research sessions before the crisis. In those, the subject of the research had been Wren, which meant there was always an asymmetry built into the dynamic — researcher and subject, however much the subject had agency in the conversation. Now the subject of the research was Wren's decision, which was not the same thing. The data was about Wren. The ownership of what to do with it was entirely Wren's.
She thought: that's the distinction she was trying to make in the conversation yesterday. Helping me understand what I'm deciding about. Not deciding for me.
She thought: this is what that looks like.
Liora looked up. "You're awake."
"For a while."
"How long?"
"Long enough to watch you work."
Something in Liora's expression — not the fourth expression, something adjacent to it. The expression of someone who has been observed doing something they care about and is registering the observation without deflecting it. "I started pulling the case data," she said. "Sync Level trajectories across all four confirmed cases. I wanted to have the full comparative picture before we talked."
"Is it useful?"
"Very." She looked at the spread of papers. "There are patterns I hadn't seen clearly before, because I hadn't been looking at all four cases side by side."
Wren got up. Both bodies, the standard morning sequence. "Show me after breakfast," she said.
"After breakfast," Liora agreed. She didn't close the notebook. She went back to work.
---
After breakfast they set up at the table properly — the inn's furniture rearranged slightly to give them working room, Liora's papers organized into a sequence that made the information legible rather than just present.
Wren sat across from her and looked at the data.
It was the first time she had looked at her own Sync Level progression as data rather than as a thing that was happening to her. The System gave her the current number when she asked. Liora had the case records, the trajectory documentation, the framework for understanding what the numbers meant. Put together, they were a picture.
"Walk me through it," Wren said.
Liora walked her through it.
The four cases varied in their starting conditions and contexts — different worlds, different iterations of the class, different circumstances of activation. But the trajectory patterns were consistent enough to allow comparison. This was, Wren realized, the work Liora had been building toward for three years — not just knowing that Twinsoul existed, not just documenting a specimen, but understanding the mechanism well enough to actually map what it required. The case documentation was the life's work made navigable.
She thought: she built this. The whole framework. So that when the actual person was in the room, there would be something to stand on.
She thought: and then the actual person arrived and complicated everything. Case One: incomplete records, trajectory inferred from endpoint data. Case Two: the one that ended badly, which had left enough documentation to understand what had gone wrong. Case Three: the survival case from eighty years prior. Case Four: the new confirmation, the one that had changed the model.
"What made Case Three's rate different?" Wren said.
"Interpersonal Sync triggers," Liora said. "The documentation is explicit about this — the research team noted that proximity with consistent mutual attention was the primary advancement factor. Not combat, not skill use, not System-directed activities. Sustained mutual presence."
Wren thought: I've known this since the System first described it. *Sustained mutual attention without agenda.* But knowing it abstractly and looking at it in comparative data were different experiences.
"And my rate?" she said.
Liora showed her.
The numbers were laid out simply: Sync Level at each checkpoint since activation. Zero at Ch.1. Fourteen at Ch.8, when she'd arrived in Karath. Eighteen at Ch.19, after the mutual declaration. Nineteen at Ch.25, after Careveth, after Halveth arrival.
"Rate calculation," Liora said. "Approximately one percent per day on average, with significant variance. Higher during high-interpersonal-contact periods, lower during travel-heavy or threat-heavy periods where attention was distributed differently."
Wren did the math. Nineteen percent now. Threshold at twenty-eight. Nine points remaining.
"At average rate," she said.
"Approximately thirteen to fourteen days if conditions remain consistent."
Wren looked at the number.
She thought: that's not abstract anymore.
She thought: two weeks. Give or take.
She thought: I need to sit with that.
---
"There's a variable I haven't modeled yet," Liora said.
Wren looked at her.
"Or rather — I've observed it in the data but I wanted to confirm it before I told you." She arranged the papers to show the trajectory chart she'd constructed — Sync Level over time, the curve of it, the acceleration points visible as upward spikes. "Look at the inflection points. Where the rate increases noticeably."
Wren looked.
The spikes were visible. Ch.19 — the mutual declaration. Ch.21 — [Partial Soul Sync] unlock. Ch.24 — love declaration, Halveth. And then — she looked more carefully — a spike at Ch.28-29.
"The crisis," she said.
"Yes."
"Sync Level advanced during the crisis."
"Yes."
Wren looked at the chart. "That seems — counterintuitive."
"It did to me as well, initially." Liora's pen moved briefly — a notation. "But when I looked at what the Accord's theoretical framework says Sync Level actually tracks — not closeness, not time spent together, but genuine mutual integration — it becomes more coherent."
"Explain."
"Sync Level advances when both consciousness streams are genuinely engaged with the same reality," Liora said. "Not performing engagement. Not parallel-but-separate processing. Actual shared reality. The mutual declaration in Ch.19 advanced it because both of us were genuinely present for the same moment. The [Partial Soul Sync] unlock in Ch.21 advanced it because I was receiving new information about your experience and actually integrating it." She paused. "The crisis advanced it because it was the first time we both had the same full picture of what had happened and were genuinely reckoning with it together. Not separately. Together."
Wren sat with this.
"Crisis events advance Sync Level," she said.
"Significant ones. Ones where genuine knowing happens." Liora looked at the chart. "Not conflict for its own sake. Not difficulty. Genuine mutual knowing — including the difficult kind."
Wren thought about Ch.29. About the conversation in the bookshop, after Maren had left. About the specific quality of both of them being present for the same accurate thing. She thought about how it had felt — not warm, not easy, but real in a way that was different from the warmth. The particular texture of two people not pretending.
"The genuine relationship is the mechanism," she said.
"Yes." Liora said it simply. "Not proximity. Not performed closeness. Actual mutual knowing, at whatever register it comes in."
"Including the hardest registers."
"Including those."
Wren looked at the chart for a long moment.
She thought: Liora just told me this. Immediately. Without calculating whether it would frighten me or change how I related to the crisis or do anything other than give me accurate information. She just told me.
She thought: that's the condition. That's what "tell me anyway" looked like in practice.
"You could have held this," Wren said.
"Yes."
"For the same reason as the threshold data."
"Yes." Liora looked at her steadily. "I noticed that. I told you anyway."
"I know," Wren said. "Thank you."
---
"I want to understand the implication," Wren said.
"Which one specifically?"
"If crisis events advance Sync Level — and Sync Level advancing approaches threshold — then the path to threshold runs through the genuine relationship. Including the difficult parts."
"Yes."
"Not through anything I could manufacture or accelerate artificially."
"No. The Accord tried that in Case Two, actually. Artificially induced high-stress conditions, attempting to accelerate advancement. It advanced Sync Level at an unsustainable rate and destabilized the integration." Liora's voice was even. "Case Two is the one that ended badly."
Wren thought: I wasn't told that detail before. She's telling me now.
"So the only path," she said, "is the one we're already on."
"The only reliable one. Yes."
Wren was quiet for a moment. She thought about the bench in Halveth where she'd sat alone and asked herself the questions. She thought about the first question — *if I knew I'd survive* — and how the answer had been probably yes. She thought about the second question and how she'd known it was too large.
She thought: I have one more question.
"If we separate," she said. "If I went one direction and you went another — what happens to the rate?"
Liora was quiet for a moment. Not reluctant — considering. "The advancement would slow significantly or stop. Skills already unlocked persist. But the interpersonal Sync triggers that have been the primary advancement factor — those require sustained proximity and mutual attention." She looked at the chart. "Distance doesn't reverse what's there. But it prevents what's coming."
"Threshold becomes unreachable."
"Much more difficult. Over an extended period of separation, possibly — yes."
Wren looked at the chart.
She thought: the threshold requires the relationship. Not as instrument. As genuine thing. The relationship has to be real for the mechanism to work. Which means the mechanism is entirely contingent on something that isn't the mechanism at all.
She thought: D said *be a variable.* The variable isn't the class mechanics. The variable is the specific quality of what's happening between two people who are genuinely knowing each other.
She thought: that's interesting. That's important.
She said: "I need to tell you something."
Liora looked at her.
"I don't want to separate," Wren said. "That's not because of the trajectory data. That's true independent of the trajectory data — it was true before I knew what the data showed, and it's still true now that I do." She paused. "I want you to know that I know what it means. That staying with you means advancing toward threshold, and threshold means Convergence, and Convergence means the mechanism, and the mechanism means the diminishment. I know the full chain. I'm not confused about it."
Liora was very still.
"And I still don't want to separate," Wren said. "I'm telling you this so that you have the complete picture. The same way I asked you to give me the complete picture."
Liora looked at her for a long moment.
Wren watched her receive this. She saw the thing happen that she'd been watching happen for thirty-two days — the precision machine taking in information and running it and coming out with an accurate response. But there was something different about it now. Less guarded in the processing. More directly present.
"I understand," she said.
"Do you have anything to say to that?"
"I have several things." She looked at her hands. "The first is: I'm glad you told me. The second is: I've known this was coming, in the sense that I knew my staying here was going to advance your Sync Level and I knew that was going to make this conversation necessary. I've been waiting for you to have enough information to have it." A pause. "The third is: I want to stay too. That hasn't changed in the past few days. It's gotten — more certain, actually. The crisis made it more certain."
"How?" Wren said.
"Because I know now that you'll tell me when something is wrong," Liora said. "And I know I'll tell you. Even when it's difficult. Even when I'm afraid of what you'll do with the information." She looked at Wren. "I know what the relationship is now, in a way I didn't before. And knowing it makes me want it more, not less."
Wren looked at her.
She thought about the Thessavane bench. About eleven cities and the departure mechanism and the specific loneliness of moving through the world with the insulation you'd installed yourself. She thought about what it had taken to get from that to this room — not just the distance traveled, but the distance traversed internally. The notebooks. The word found looking at Halveth from a rise. The one-second answer.
She thought: she got here. Through the crisis and the naming and the pattern fired and the pattern broken. She got here.
She thought: that's a specific kind of love. Not the easy version that survives on good conditions. The version that looks at the difficult thing and says: I see you. I still want this.
She thought: that's what I believe about her.
She thought: that's what I feel about her.
She said: "Okay."
"Okay," Liora said.
---
They worked through the afternoon.
Liora presented the remaining information — what the diminishment period looked like in practice for Case Three, what support the Accord had provided and could provide, what the recovery trajectory typically looked like and where the uncertainty was in the model. She presented it clearly, without softening the difficult parts and without dramatizing them. Just: information, offered to someone who was going to use it to make a decision.
Wren received it the same way. She asked follow-up questions. She noted things she wanted to think about more. She did not make the decision.
What she noticed, as the afternoon went on: the quality of the work. This was not the research sessions of early Karath — not the specimen and the researcher. This was closer to the lateral sessions on the road, when they'd both been working on the same problem from different angles. Except now the problem was explicitly hers and Liora was explicitly assisting rather than claiming co-ownership of the investigation.
She thought: she's giving me the research. Not keeping it as hers and sharing conclusions. Actually giving me the underlying data and letting me work with it myself.
She thought: that's what I needed.
She thought: that's what she was always capable of doing. The fear was the thing that prevented it.
She thought: I understand the fear better now than I did three days ago. I understand it because I've been watching what it looks like when someone actively works against their own protective pattern. What it costs. How many times you have to notice and choose differently before the noticing becomes the default.
At some point in the mid-afternoon, Liora said: "I want to note something for the record."
Wren looked at her. "What?"
"The condition you set yesterday. *If you encounter information that's relevant to my decision and you're tempted to hold it, tell me anyway.*" She looked at her notes. "I've encountered three pieces of information today that I noticed myself considering whether to present in full or soften. I told you all three in full."
Wren looked at her. She thought about the crisis data. The Case Two detail. The separation implications stated clearly and without minimization. Three opportunities. Three times told.
"I noticed," Wren said.
"I wanted you to know I noticed too." Liora closed the research notebook. "I'm tracking myself. I thought you should know that I'm doing that."
Wren looked at her for a moment. She thought about: the threshold information, held for weeks. The recovery timeline, held slightly less long. And now this — three pieces today, three times not held. The same category of information, different behavior.
She thought: patterns change. Not overnight, not easily, not without the pattern first firing and being named and the person deciding they want to stop running it. But they change.
She thought: I'm watching it change in real time.
She thought: that's also something I'm going to need to sit with — what it means to be with someone whose wound has overlap with mine. Someone who is learning to tell me things at the same time as I'm learning to receive them. Two people with adjacent wounds, both healing, both having to be careful with each other and also honest with each other.
She thought: that's not simple.
She thought: but it's real.
She thought: that's the behavior of someone who means it.
"Thank you," Wren said.
"You don't have to—"
"I know I don't have to. I'm saying it because it's true."
Liora looked at her with something that was quieter than the fourth expression — something that had been through a crisis and come out the other side with more weight but more clarity. Something that was, in the specific way of things that have survived difficulty, stronger.
"Okay," she said.
The afternoon wound down. The Halveth light went to its late-day quality, making everything look exactly like itself. Two more days here, Maren had said. Then a direction.
Wren thought: I'll have one by then.
She thought: I can feel the edges of it.
She thought: tomorrow is day thirty-one. The day after is day thirty-two. Maren said two more days defensible. That's the window.
She thought: the window is enough. I'll have what I need by then.
She thought: both of her. Both of her sitting in this room with the data and the decision and the person and the lamp going on as the afternoon light faded and all of it, every piece of it, being held.
She thought: I've been learning to hold larger things. That's been true since the first night in the ruined village, when the System told her the tutorial was unavailable and she had to figure out how to be a person with two bodies in real time.
She thought: this is the largest one yet. And I'm holding it. Both of her.
She thought: that's enough for today. That's more than enough.
You've reached the end of this chapter
Liora was already at the table when Wren surfaced from distributed-rest.
Not reading — working. The research notebook was open and spread with additional sheets, the ones she used when a problem required more lateral space than the notebook's standard pages allowed. Ink on three separate surfaces. The compressed handwriting of someone who had been at this for a while.
