Seren comes to the archive at mid-morning.
I hear the door — the particular sound it makes, which I have catalogued as thoroughly as everything else here — and look up, and it's her. She does a brief scan of the room with the same light environmental awareness she had in the market, registers both of us, and directs herself toward Kael's table with the directional confidence of someone who knows where they need to go.
Not toward me. Not to check in, not to continue the conversation from the market. Kael is the relevant person for whatever she needs, and Seren, I'm learning, is very efficient about these things. She goes to where she needs to go.
I go back to my records.
I am very focused on my records.
She greets Kael with the ease of someone who has been greeting him for a long time — not formal, not overly familiar, the specific register of two people who know each other well enough that the greeting doesn't require much. He looks up and they exchange a few quiet words. She has a question about a community meeting — something about the eastern well access during the winter months, a dispute between two families that apparently needs mediation, the kind of local governance issue that falls under Kael's remit as the person who runs this place.
I am very focused on my records. I am reading the same line for the third time.
Kael is explaining something. I can hear the cadence of it without making out most of the words — he's gone into the patient, measured explanation mode that means he's laying out context for someone who needs the full picture before they can understand the specific answer. He's thorough. He's clear. He takes his time.
I put down the record I've been not-reading and pick up a different one.
---
The thing is — and I note this as a fact, not a judgment — Kael explains things differently to Seren than he explains them to me.
I notice this the way I notice most things about him now: not by looking, not by deciding to pay attention, but by the accumulation of small observations that happen anyway because I've been in this room with him long enough that my awareness of him has become ambient. The way weather is ambient. You don't choose to know what the temperature is; you know because you're standing in it.
With me he is precise and efficient. Short sentences, clean information, the assumption that I will understand the first time and ask if I don't. He doesn't over-explain. He doesn't add context I haven't asked for. He treats my comprehension as a given and adjusts only when I indicate otherwise.
With Seren he's doing something I can hear even without the specific words: he's building from the ground up. Starting with context. Laying in the framework before the specific answer. Not because Seren is less capable — she is clearly not less capable, she is a person who notices when her friends are carrying something and tells you things are true without loading it with significance. She's doing this because she doesn't have the same context I have, and Kael is adjusting to that.
He adjusts to people. I wrote that quality into him deliberately — the thing where he reads a person and gives them what they actually need rather than what he would prefer to give. I wrote it as a character trait that would make his eventual sacrifice more meaningful: *of course he dies for the people he cares about, this is how he loves them, in attentive small adjustments.*
I wrote it. It is happening in front of me. I am watching him do the thing I gave him and I am — doing something I am going to need to examine later, in a room by myself, when I have more data and fewer witnesses.
I pick up a third record.
This one I actually read.
---
Seren leaves after about fifteen minutes. A brief exchange at the door — she says something that makes Kael's expression shift slightly in the way it does when someone has said something that lands, not comic but true. He nods. She goes.
The door closes.
Kael returns to his table and sits down and opens his file and reads.
I watch him for a moment — one moment, not sustained, the brief look of someone confirming something — and I notice that there's no transition in his manner. He moves from the Seren conversation back to his work with the same seamlessness he moves between everything, no visible adjustment, no settling-in period. Some people need a moment to change modes. He doesn't. The Seren conversation and the file he's reading exist in the same continuum of his attention, equally present, equally processed.
I wrote him with focus like that. I wrote it as efficiency, as the product of someone who has been doing multiple things simultaneously for long enough that the switching cost has dropped to zero. It seemed like a useful quality for a border lord to have.
He turns a page.
I continue with the eastern supply corrections.
The silence has the texture it usually has — shared space, parallel work, the comfortable rhythm of people who have been doing this long enough that the absence of conversation is not an absence of anything. It usually feels like a full room even when nothing is being said.
Today it feels like a full room in which I am aware of one specific object.
I work through another set of records. My corrections are accurate. My cross-referencing is thorough. My handwriting is slightly more precise than usual, the kind of precision that happens when you're paying close attention to the physical act of writing because you're trying not to pay attention to something else.
At noon I go to get lunch from the provisions seller near the market and walk back through the settlement in the thin autumn sun, and I think about the morning.
I think about the way Kael's voice sounded when he was explaining things to Seren — patient, careful, the voice of someone who is genuinely invested in the other person understanding. I think about the thing I was doing while I was trying not to think about it.
*It's fine,* I tell myself. *It's completely fine. This is how he is with people he cares about. I wrote him this way. I know exactly why he's this way and I understand the mechanism completely.*
This is an accurate analysis and it is not helping.
---
Before I go back to the records, I stand for a moment in the kitchen doorway eating the bread I bought and thinking about what I'm going to do this afternoon. Not the records — I know what I'm going to do with the records, the records are mapped out, the work is clear. I'm thinking about whether I'm going to do the other thing.
The thing I noticed while I was trying not to notice this morning.
Seren has a problem that has a document attached to it, a document that exists in the archive in the wrong place. I know this because I built the history that produced the document. I could find it if I looked. Whether I should look — whether that's my job, whether that's appropriate, whether I'm getting involved in something that isn't mine to be involved in — is a separate question.
I finish the bread. I stand in the doorway a moment longer, watching the settlement. Somewhere across the way, Mira Voss is probably at her stall. The archive boy Theo is probably running errands. The world is doing what it does, living in the spaces I left blank and the spaces I filled in and all the space between.
I go back inside.
The afternoon work is the eastern supply corrections — a series of records that requires comparing two sets of documentation and identifying the inconsistencies introduced by the notation system I found last week. It's mechanical work that I've gotten good at, and I move through it efficiently, and somewhere in the third hour I find a document I wasn't looking for.
It's in the wrong section — filed under general correspondence when it should be under community records, a mistake made by the same staff member whose notation errors I've been correcting for two weeks. The document is about the eastern well access. The specific dispute that Seren asked about this morning. It has context that isn't in the current records — a previous mediation attempt, ten years ago, the terms that were agreed to then and apparently not adequately documented afterward. Which is why there's a dispute now.
I hold the document and think.
I know this document exists because I wrote the history of it — not the document itself, which is one of the things the world filled in without me, but the event it references. The previous mediation. The agreement that was reached. I made decisions about the settlement's social history when I needed the eastern well to have a complicated relationship with local governance, because complicated relationships produce better character dynamics, and I filed it under *context that produces the world texture I want* and never developed it into a scene.
Seren doesn't know this document exists. Kael might know it exists but hasn't mentioned it. The document would resolve the current dispute before it needs a mediation meeting.
I could put it back where I found it and note the misfiling for the general correction list. That's the archival procedure. That's what the work requires.
I get up and carry it to Kael's table.
---
"Found this in the general correspondence," I say. "It's misfiled — should be community records. But it's relevant to what Seren was asking about."
I put it on the corner of his table. He picks it up without speaking, reads the first page, reads the second, sets it down.
He looks at me.
"Did you know this existed?" he says. "Or did you look for it?"
The question is specific. Not *where did you find this* or *how did you know to look here* — did you *know* or did you *look.* The distinction matters. Knowing it exists would mean it was already in my mental inventory. Looking means I chose to find it.
"I looked for it," I say.
He's looking at me with the quality of attention that means he's taking the information seriously. Not the reading-look, not the strategic assessment — the full-presence look.
"For Seren," he says.
Not a question. He's already arrived at the answer; he's just confirming the path.
"Yes," I say.
Kael is quiet for a moment. I am aware of the archive around us — the amber light, the shelves, the particular quality of the air in a room full of old paper that has become as familiar as my own room. I am aware of the distance between us, which is not large.
"Good," he says.
One word. Same register as everything else he says that is simply true — no emphasis, no loading, no performance of approval. Just a statement of evaluation.
He picks up the document and adds it to the relevant stack.
I go back to my table.
*Good.*
I think about that word for the rest of the afternoon. Not the document — the document is straightforward, useful, the world providing something that will make a real person's situation easier. I'm glad I found it. That's not the complicated part.
The complicated part is the *good* — the specific quality of it. He wasn't saying *useful* or *helpful* or *well done.* He was saying something about the act itself, about the choice that produced it. About the fact that I chose to look rather than filed the misfiling and moved on.
He noticed I had a choice. He noticed I made one. He said *good.*
I work through the rest of the afternoon records.
---
Evening. The window. The gate.
I have been in my room for about an hour, sitting at the narrow table with the candle and the history book open to a page I'm not reading, and I have been circling something and not landing on it and finally, because I have found that the best approach to things I'm avoiding is to simply look at them directly, I look at it directly.
I felt jealous this morning.
Not dramatically. Not in the way jealousy appears in stories, which usually involves people doing things or saying things or making decisions they wouldn't otherwise make. This was quieter than that — a specific awareness, a texture in the room that changed when Seren was in it, a thing I noticed in myself the way you notice you've been holding your breath: suddenly and without being sure how long it's been happening.
I felt jealous of — not Seren. Not Kael's attention to Seren, exactly. More like: the ease of it. The way he is with her because she needs him in a way that has a clear shape — she needs the well mediation, he knows how to help with the well mediation, the need and the help align and the interaction is clean. I know everything about him, I have twenty-seven days of his presence in archive amber light, I have a room with a window facing his gate, and there is nothing clean about the shape of what I need from him or what he might need from me.
Which is fine. That's not a complaint. It's just — I noticed.
But here's the thing I keep arriving at when I try to think about this clearly:
I don't have the right to be jealous.
Kael doesn't belong to me. Seren isn't doing anything wrong. They have a history I didn't write, a friendship that grew in the margins of my manuscript while I was writing other things, a dynamic that is theirs entirely. And even if I set all of that aside — even if I try to think about it purely in terms of what I feel rather than what I'm entitled to feel — I run into the same wall.
I wrote this.
I wrote Kael with the quality of care he shows Seren. I wrote it deliberately, as a character choice, because I needed him to be the kind of person who adjusts to what people need, who gives them what will actually help rather than what's expedient. I made that decision at my desk at 2 a.m. and I was proud of it because it felt true to the character and it served the narrative.
I cannot be jealous of something I authored.
I cannot be jealous of a quality I chose to give him because it would make his death more meaningful.
I sit with this logic for a while. It is internally consistent. It is also — I notice — not actually making the feeling go away, which suggests that either the logic is incomplete or feelings do not respond to logic the way I would prefer them to.
Probably the second one.
There's another thing I keep running into, underneath the logic: I didn't write myself into this story. Reverie Marlowe, the unnamed woman from chapter three, the person in borrowed clothes who cross-references supply records and drinks dark tea and has a room with an east-facing window — I didn't write her. She arrived when I arrived. Whatever I feel is not something I authored. It's not something I can file under *craft decision* or *character trait serving the narrative.* It's just mine, for better or for worse, without the external justification of having been written that way.
This doesn't make the logic wrong. Kael still doesn't belong to me, Seren still isn't doing anything wrong, I still wrote him with those qualities and can't retroactively be jealous of my own choices.
It just adds a layer. The feelings are mine, the feelings aren't scripted, and the logic is still the logic.
The gate arch is dark at this hour. The settlement has gone to its evening version of itself. Somewhere in those buildings, Kael is doing whatever Kael does in the evenings — walking the perimeter, reviewing patrol reports, reading when the work allows it.
From the room's small quiet comes a thread of sound, almost too faint to catch:
*— the way he said good —*
*— she's starting to move —*
*— I'm so here for this —*
I close the history book.
If I don't have the right to be jealous — what right do I have?
The question sits in the room with me, patient, in the way of questions that already have answers and are waiting for the person to be ready to hear them. I am twenty-eight days into living in a story I wrote and I have been honest, lately, about a number of things I spent the first weeks avoiding. The list has been getting shorter.
This is the next one.
I know the answer. I'm not saying it tonight. But I'm sitting with the question rather than the avoidance, and that, at this point, counts as progress.
The candle burns down. I let it.
Tomorrow there are more supply records to correct, and Seren will have her document about the eastern well, and Kael will be at his table in the amber light, and I will have one fewer thing I'm pretending not to know.
That seems like enough.
I blow out the candle. I sit in the dark for a moment with the question still in the room — *if not the right to be jealous, what right do I have* — and I let it be unanswered for one more night.
Some questions earn their answers through patience rather than speed. I've learned that much, at least, in twenty-eight days of living in a story I wrote.
I wrote many things. I'm still figuring out which of them are true.
