The man in the lobby was waiting with the particular stillness of someone who was very good at waiting and wanted you to know it.
Yoon-seo clocked him on her way through the entrance — mid-fifties, suit that cost more than most people's monthly rent, a pin on his lapel that she recognized from three weeks of studying everything she could find about this world's power structures. The Kwon family crest. Stylized, subtle, the kind of emblem that announced itself only to people who already knew what they were looking for.
He stepped forward when she approached the reception desk. "I'm here to see Kwon Si-woo."
"I'm not his scheduler," she said, in Chae-won's flattest register. "You'll need to contact the team manager."
She went upstairs without waiting for his response.
---
The room she used for administrative work on the forty-third floor had a window that faced the building's rear courtyard — a narrow strip of concrete and two trees that existed primarily as a legal green space requirement and saw almost no foot traffic. She had never paid particular attention to it.
Fifteen minutes after she'd arrived upstairs, she looked up from the manifest she was working through and saw Si-woo cross the courtyard below.
He had come from the building's side entrance, which meant he had known the visitor was there and had chosen not to meet him in the lobby. The man from the lobby appeared from the building's main entrance a moment later, adjusting his jacket, and they met in the middle of the courtyard with the particular geometry of two people who had done this before and had established, through repetition, exactly how much distance to keep.
Yoon-seo had not intended to watch. She had a manifest. The manifest needed finishing.
She watched anyway.
---
She couldn't hear anything through the glass. The distance was too great and the window was sealed against the building's climate control system. She had only what she could see: the man's posture, which was the posture of someone delivering a message they had delivered before and expected to deliver again; Si-woo's posture, which was —
Different.
She had catalogued Si-woo's posture extensively by now, in the involuntary way you catalogued the habits of someone you were paying close attention to. She knew the stance he used in dungeons, combat-ready and economical. She knew the stance he used in the base's common spaces, slightly apart, weight distributed for quick movement. She knew the stance at thresholds, and the stance when he was doing something mechanical with his hands, and the stance — rarer, and she was aware she had noticed it — when he was in a room with only her.
This was none of those.
His arms were at his sides. Not crossed — she had never seen him cross his arms, that was a defensive gesture and he didn't bother with defensive gestures, he simply removed himself from situations that required them. Just hanging at his sides, hands loose, nothing held. The man was talking and Si-woo was listening with his head at a slight downward angle that she recognized, after a moment, as the angle of someone who had stopped trying to find a different answer in the speaker's face.
He had heard these words before. Many times. And he had stopped, at some point, believing that this time would be different.
That's not stillness, she thought. That's something else. That's what it looks like when someone has run out of the energy required to react.
The man talked for perhaps four minutes. Si-woo listened. At one point the man made a gesture — small, decisive, the gesture of someone laying out terms — and Si-woo's chin came up slightly, a fractional movement, and then came back down.
That was all.
The man straightened his jacket, said something final, and walked back toward the building's main entrance without looking back. The interaction had the quality of a transaction — complete, recorded, neither party under any illusion about what it had been.
Si-woo stayed where he was.
---
She should have gone back to the manifest. There was no productive reason to continue standing at a window watching someone stand in a courtyard. She had work. She had, technically, a mission that required her to be strategic and calibrated and not emotionally invested in the internal states of the person she was supposed to be methodically conquering.
She stood at the window.
He wasn't doing anything. That was the thing she kept coming back to. He was just standing in the courtyard with the two inadequate trees and the concrete and the fading afternoon light, and he wasn't moving, and there was something about the absolute quality of that stillness that was different from his usual stillness — which was the stillness of someone conserving energy, present and watchful. This was the stillness of someone who had nowhere particular to go next and was, for the moment, simply existing in the space between what had just happened and whatever came after it.
He does this alone, she thought. Whatever this is — the visits from the Kwon family, the weight of them, the aftermath — he does it alone, every time, in whatever empty space is available, and then he puts it away and comes back in and nobody asks and he doesn't tell.
She thought about the dining room in Chae-won's memory. The chair that was slightly too tall. The conversation that moved around a child as though she were furniture.
Different shapes. The same kind of room.
She became aware that she wanted to go downstairs.
Not to say anything useful. Not to help in any way she could have articulated. Just — to be in the same space. To not let him be the only person standing there. It was an impulse with no strategic value and no logical justification and she recognized it for exactly what it was, which was why she stayed at the window instead of moving toward the door.
Si-woo looked up.
She didn't know if he'd sensed her or if it was coincidence — his gaze moving upward for some unrelated reason and landing on the window by chance. His face was still at the angle she'd been watching, and from this distance she couldn't read his expression, only the fact of his attention directed at exactly the place where she was standing.
She stepped back from the window.
Not quickly — not so quickly that it looked like retreat. Just back, to the edge of visibility, and then she turned and sat down at the desk and looked at the manifest that was still open in front of her.
The column headings were very clear. The numbers were very specific. She had been doing this work for three weeks and she knew exactly what each line meant and she could not currently make herself read any of it.
There it is, she thought. There's the problem.
Not the divergence map. Not the unreliable plot. Not even the system mission with its penalty clause and its deadline and its cold blue notifications. Those were all problems, real ones, and she would deal with them.
The problem was that she had just stood at a window watching Kwon Si-woo stand alone in a courtyard and her first coherent thought had not been about mission completion probability or target profile metrics or any of the careful, strategic frameworks she had built over three weeks to keep this manageable.
Her first coherent thought had been: I don't want him to have to do that alone.
She put her pen down. Picked it up again. Looked at the manifest.
Later, she told herself. You can have this problem later. Right now there is work.
She went back to work.
She was not, she noticed, particularly convincing.
