The Class A gate in the northern district had been open for six hours by the time the team arrived, which meant the interior had had time to fully pressurize and the mob density on the first floor was already higher than the pre-entry scan had suggested.
Yoon-seo adjusted her assessment within the first ten minutes and did not share this adjustment with anyone, because the team was already moving and the adjustment was simply: this is going to be longer than expected, and saying so would not change that.
She healed Ha-eun's left side at the twenty-minute mark, a glancing hit from something that moved faster than it should have for its size. Minor. She healed Min-seok's shoulder at forty minutes — he'd taken a hit protecting Park Jun-ho from a flanking attack, which was what Min-seok did and which he was good at but which had a cost. She topped up Si-jun's reserves at the first floor junction, a preventive measure rather than a response to injury, because his structural ability was going to be needed on the floors above and she could see in his energy signature that he was running leaner than optimal.
Her own reserves were running leaner than optimal too, but that was a different category of problem.
Healers triage, she told herself. Everyone else first, then yourself, then reassess. That's the protocol. That's always been the protocol.
She followed the team to the second floor and kept going.
---
The second floor was worse. Not catastrophically — nobody died, nobody was incapacitated, the team adapted with the practiced efficiency of people who had been in bad rooms before — but the mob density had increased again and there were three simultaneous engagements in the span of an hour that each required her full attention in sequence with not enough time between them. By the time they reached the second floor junction her hands were steady and her face was composed and she was running on approximately forty percent of her starting reserves, which she was aware was a number that had implications for the floor above.
She healed what needed healing and recalculated on the move and did not mention the forty percent.
---
The boss room on the third floor was wrong from the moment they entered it.
Not wrong in the way of a dungeon she remembered differently — she had checked this gate against her divergence map and found only one entry, a minor one, nothing that suggested the third floor would be significantly altered. Wrong in the way of a space that had decided to be something other than its designation: the room was larger than Class A boss rooms typically were, the ceiling higher, and the thing waiting at the far end had a quality to its energy signature that she hadn't encountered before and didn't have a category for.
This is divergence, she realized. This is what it looks like when the story has changed enough that the details stop matching. I don't know this fight.
She took her position at the rear and prepared to adapt.
The fight went well for eleven minutes, which she would later identify as the point at which it stopped going well. The boss had a standard attack pattern for the first phase — large, slow, telegraphed, the kind of thing the team handled without difficulty — and then, with no visible transition, it switched to something different. An area effect, expanding outward from the boss's center in a wave that moved faster than the first pattern had suggested it could.
She saw it coming. She processed it. She was in the middle of directing a heal toward Ha-eun, who had taken a hit in the preceding exchange and whose left side was showing stress again, and she made the calculation in the available time: finish the heal, take the hit, or drop the heal and shield herself.
She finished the heal.
The wave caught her left arm at the edge of its radius — not the full force, she had been moving as she healed and the angle was not direct, but enough. The impact knocked her back two steps and she caught herself against the wall and stood very still for a moment assessing the damage with the focused, clinical attention she applied to other people's injuries and found, when she applied it to herself, considerably less comfortable.
Left forearm. A clean injury, no structural damage, the kind that would be straightforward to heal under normal circumstances. Under current circumstances — forty percent reserves, active combat, two floors of prior expenditure — it was going to cost more than it should.
Across the room, Ha-eun was back on her feet. The heal had landed. The team was handling the second phase.
Yoon-seo adjusted her grip on her medikit, kept her left arm at a slightly different angle than usual, and went back to work.
---
The post-combat assessment happened in the room's relative quiet after the boss went down, the team running through the standard checks with the tired efficiency of people who had learned that the ten minutes after a fight ended were when you found out what the fight had actually cost.
She was in the middle of re-evaluating Ha-eun's left side — fully healed, no residual stress, she was satisfied with how it had gone — when she became aware that someone had come to stand beside her.
Not Ha-eun. Ha-eun was in front of her.
She looked to her left.
Si-woo was standing close enough that she could see the detail of his expression, which was the expression he used when he was looking at something and processing what he saw without deciding yet what to do about it. His gaze was on her left arm — the one she had been holding at a slightly different angle for the past twenty minutes, the adjustment so small she had been confident no one would notice.
He noticed.
"Show me," he said.
Not a question. She looked at him for a moment — the flat, even face, the eyes that were doing the thing where they were more attentive than his expression suggested — and then she pushed her sleeve up to the elbow.
The injury was visible now: a linear mark running along the outer forearm, reddened at the edges, not severe but unambiguous. The kind of thing that was easy to overlook in a fight and easy to dismiss afterward and that she had been, in fact, doing both of those things.
Si-woo looked at it for a moment. Then he looked at her.
She had learned, over the past weeks, to read the variations in his silences — the ones that were processing, the ones that were deciding, the ones that were simply existing. This one was none of those. This was the silence of someone who had noticed something he didn't like and was holding it without expressing it, the way you held something that was too hot to put down and too hot to keep holding.
"It's manageable," she said.
"I know," he said. Which meant he had already assessed it and reached the same conclusion, and was not asking about manageability.
She pulled her reserves together — what remained of them, which was less than she would have chosen — and directed them at her own forearm. It was a strange sensation, healing yourself: too immediate, too direct, without the usual intermediary of another person's need to organize the response around. It took longer than it should have and cost more than she had wanted it to cost, and Si-woo stood beside her the entire time without moving, without speaking, his presence in that space neither intrusive nor performative, simply — there.
When she was done she pulled her sleeve back down and flexed her fingers once to confirm the result.
"Good," he said, the same way he said most things — mild, even, pitched for the space between them and no further.
He turned and walked back toward the rest of the team and the post-combat routine that still needed completing. She watched him go in the way she had developed the habit of watching him go — cataloguing the movement, the pace, the particular quality of a person who occupied space without announcing it.
He paused at the edge of her hearing range. Not quite a stop — just a fraction of a second's reduction in pace, the kind that might have been nothing.
"Healers need healing too," he said, to approximately the middle distance.
He kept walking.
Yoon-seo stood in the boss room of a Class A dungeon with the post-combat quiet settling around her and her forearm healed and her reserves nearly empty and looked at the space he had just left.
Four words, she thought. That's all it was. A practical observation. An obvious thing to say.
She was unconvinced by this argument but she made it anyway, because the alternative was acknowledging that Kwon Si-woo had crossed a room specifically to check on her, had stood beside her without being asked while she healed herself, and had said the most ordinary possible thing in a voice that sounded like he meant considerably more than the words contained.
She picked up her medikit and went to finish the post-combat checks.
She did not, at any point, manage to stop thinking about it.
