She woke up the next morning and lay in Chae-won's bed staring at Chae-won's ceiling and did not know what to do.
This was a new experience. She had arrived in this world with a mission and a plot summary and a set of frameworks for navigating both, and even as those frameworks had become progressively less reliable, she had always had something to do next: the supply run, the dungeon, the manifest, the lunchbox. The work was real. The work was always there. The work had been, for seven weeks, the thing she reached for when everything else was uncertain.
The work was still there. She had a full manifest to review and a supply projection that needed updating and a report for the Kang family's procurement office due by end of week.
She did not reach for any of it. She lay in bed and looked at the ceiling and thought about a parking structure at seven in the evening and the sound of something exhaling.
He had used everything he knew about her to try to end this. She had not been hurt by it — she had been, in the way of someone who had spent seven weeks learning to read a very specific person, clarified by it. The precision of the aim was the evidence. You didn't know where to aim at someone you hadn't been paying attention to.
And she did not know what came next. She had no plan. She had, she realized, not had a real plan since approximately day three, when the plan had been overtaken by the reality of actually being here, actually being in rooms with actual people who did not behave like characters on a page.
She got up and went to the kitchen.
---
She made the lunchboxes the way she had been making them for ten weeks — seven containers, the seventh set aside — and only noticed partway through that she was cooking with more attention than usual. The rice was measured carefully. The eggs were given the full time they needed rather than being pulled slightly early. She found a container of sesame spinach in the back of the refrigerator that she'd blanched two days ago and portioned it into each box in small, careful amounts.
She looked at the finished containers on the counter.
Better than usual, she thought. Not because she had tried harder. Because her hands had been doing this long enough to know how, and today her hands had had nothing else to think about.
She packed them and went to base.
---
Ha-eun arrived first, as she often did, took a container without ceremony, and looked at it for a moment before looking at Yoon-seo. "The rice is right today," she said, which was Ha-eun's version of an extended compliment.
"I had time this morning," Yoon-seo said.
Ha-eun accepted this and went to her desk, and Yoon-seo watched her go and thought about how Ha-eun never asked more than what was offered and how that had, over ten weeks, become one of the things she valued most about being in this room.
Min-seok arrived with the uncomplicated enthusiasm he brought to most food-adjacent situations, took a container, said something appreciative about the spinach, and went to bother Ha-eun about something equipment-related. Park Jun-ho arrived, took a container, said thank you with the quiet sincerity she had come to expect, and settled at his desk. Si-jun assessed the table with his usual two-second evaluation and took a container without comment.
Yoon-seo sat down with the manifest and opened it to the first page.
She was reading. Actually reading — the numbers resolving into meaning, the columns making sense, her attention distributed appropriately across the data. She had her pen in her hand. She was making notes. This was functional work happening in real time, which was — fine. This was fine. She was fine. The parking structure was last night and this was this morning and both things existed in the same timeline and she was managing the transition between them adequately.
She heard the elevator at ten past ten.
---
She did not look up.
She had been practicing this — not as performance, but as discipline, the deliberate maintenance of her own attention in the face of the particular pull that his arrivals had been exerting on her peripheral awareness for weeks. She kept her eyes on the manifest and her pen moving and tracked his entrance through sound: the elevator doors, the footsteps she knew, the pause at the threshold that she had catalogued enough times to map precisely.
He came in. She kept reading.
She heard him move across the room — not toward the equipment table, which was where he usually went first. She registered the deviation without changing anything about how she was sitting or where she was looking. The footsteps moved to her left, toward the common table where the lunchboxes were. She heard the sound of a container being lifted.
The seventh container, she noted from the sound — the slight extra second it took to locate it at its usual position slightly apart from the others.
And then: a chair.
Not the equipment table. Not the far end of the room. A chair at the common table, which was the table she was sitting at, on the far side of it, at the distance of someone sitting down to eat rather than sitting down to work.
She kept her eyes on the manifest.
The sound of a container being opened. The quiet sounds of someone eating — unhurried, the way he did everything, without the self-consciousness of someone performing an action and the ease of someone simply doing one. She heard him set his chopsticks down once, briefly, and then pick them up again.
She turned a page.
Ten weeks, she thought. He had been taking the seventh container for ten weeks. She had watched it disappear from supply tables and equipment racks and folding tables in parking structures, always when she wasn't looking, always after she'd given up expecting it. She had noted each disappearance with the careful neutrality of someone not drawing conclusions and had drawn every conclusion anyway, privately, in the part of her that had stopped pretending not to know what was happening.
And now he was sitting across the table eating it. In front of her. At ten fifteen on a Wednesday morning, after a parking structure conversation that had not gone the way he'd planned, like a person who had run out of the particular kind of energy that avoidance required and had arrived, on the other side of it, at something simpler.
She made a note in the manifest margin. A real note — she'd caught an inconsistency in the consumables tracking that needed to be addressed before the end of the month.
He ate. She worked. Ha-eun was at her desk doing something on her tablet, which Yoon-seo could hear but not see. The building ran its mid-morning sounds around them.
Nobody said anything.
Nobody needed to.
---
He finished before she did — she heard the container close, the small domestic sound of someone wrapping up a meal, and then his chair pushed back. She looked up as he stood, because not looking up would have been its own kind of statement, and she had stopped making statements through deliberate absence.
He was carrying his container to the recycling. She watched him cross the room, deposit it with the same unhurried precision he brought to everything, and turn toward the equipment table.
He didn't look at her.
She looked back at the manifest.
This is not a large thing, she told herself. He ate a lunchbox. At a table. In a room where other people also eat lunchboxes at tables. This is not a declaration. This is not a turning point. This is not —
She stopped the thought.
It was the largest thing that had happened in ten weeks. She was allowed to know that and not say it out loud, and she was allowed to keep sitting at the table with the manifest in front of her and the pen in her hand and let the morning continue around her without making the moment carry more than it already did.
It already carried enough.
She finished the page. She started the next one. Outside the window, the city went about its Wednesday, indifferent and continuous, the way it always did.
At the equipment table, she could hear him working.
It sounded, she thought, exactly like every other morning. And nothing like any of them.
