By the end of the week, it had become a pattern.
Not an announced one — nothing about Kwon Si-woo was announced, and she had learned not to expect it. But on the days she brought lunchboxes, he came to the common table and ate the seventh container there, and on the days she didn't bring lunchboxes, he didn't ask, and that was the whole of the arrangement. No discussion, no acknowledgment, no negotiation of terms. Just: the container was there, and he sat down, and that was what happened now.
Ha-eun had noticed. She knew this because Ha-eun noticed everything and because on Tuesday Ha-eun had looked up from her tablet at exactly the moment Si-woo sat down and had then immediately and pointedly looked back at her tablet in the way of someone exercising a deliberate decision not to comment. Yoon-seo appreciated this more than she could easily have explained.
Min-seok had not noticed, or had noticed and was processing it at the rate that Min-seok processed most interpersonal developments, which was: eventually, and loudly, when the moment had passed and the observation was technically accurate but no longer timely. She was not concerned about this.
Park Jun-ho had noticed and was not going to say anything because Park Jun-ho did not say things that weren't his to say, which she had understood about him from approximately week two and which she found genuinely admirable.
She had, without deciding to, adjusted the recipes.
---
She caught herself doing it on Thursday, portioning the seasoning into the egg dish and realizing partway through that she was using less than the recipe called for. She stopped and thought about why. The answer arrived before she'd finished the thought: in the third week, she had watched Si-woo leave about a third of the egg portion in his container, and she had, without filing it anywhere consciously, retained the information.
Less salt. No chili in the egg. She had made these adjustments without a decision point, the way she had made most of the adjustments of the past eleven weeks — not as choices but as responses, the natural output of paying attention.
Rule three, she thought, with something that was not quite amusement and not quite resignation. Identify and respond to his stated and unstated needs. She had written it as a strategy and it had been, from the beginning, just a description of what she was already doing.
She packed the containers and went to base.
---
The morning was unremarkable in the specific, particular way that mornings had become unremarkable — which was to say that things happened in it that would have been remarkable eight weeks ago and were now simply the texture of the day.
Ha-eun asked about the dungeon schedule for the following week. Si-woo, without looking up from the equipment he was cleaning, said there was a Class A gate projected for Thursday that would likely require full team. Ha-eun noted this. The conversation moved on.
Yoon-seo wrote down the Thursday gate and kept working.
She was aware of him with the awareness she had stopped trying to manage — present, in the peripheral way, the same way she was aware of the room's light level or the building's ambient sound. Not monitoring. Just knowing where he was, the way you knew where the walls were.
He finished the lunchbox and returned the container and went back to his work and she watched none of this directly and registered all of it anyway, and this was fine, and she had stopped pretending it was anything other than what it was.
In the afternoon, she was alone in the workroom when the system appeared.
---
[ Mission Status Update ] Target engagement level: significant increase detected Previous completion probability: 34% Current completion probability: 61% Trajector assessment: on track No action required. Continue current approach.
She read it once. Then again.
Sixty-one percent. More than halfway. On track.
She had been at thirty-four percent for what felt like most of the past month — the system had updated once in the early weeks to move her from its initial assessment, and then nothing, a long plateau during which she had been uncertain whether the mission was progressing or stalled or whether the metric the system was using bore any relationship to the actual state of things. Thirty-four percent had felt like a number assigned to her situation by something that didn't fully understand what her situation was.
Sixty-one percent felt — different.
She looked at it and waited for what she expected to feel, which was relief. The appropriate response to good news, to evidence of progress, to confirmation that the penalty clause was moving further away. She had been working toward this number for eleven weeks. She had a reason to want it to be high and a reason to want it to keep climbing and none of those reasons had changed.
What she felt instead was something adjacent to dread.
Not large — not the acute fear of the early weeks, when the system had been new and the penalty had been immediate and vivid. Something quieter than that. The particular unease of a question she hadn't been asking and was now, involuntarily, asking.
What does one hundred percent look like?
She did not know. The system had given her a mission and a penalty and a metric and had not, at any point, specified what completion looked like from the inside. Was it a moment — a specific exchange, a declaration, something she would know when it happened? Was it a threshold the system measured in some internal way she couldn't access? Would she feel it when it crossed? Would she know?
And after — what happened after?
She had not thought about this carefully. She had been thinking about survival — about not failing, about keeping the number moving in the right direction, about the penalty clause and what it meant and how to avoid it. She had not, with any real attention, thought about what came after the mission was complete.
The system had said: a new life, free and happy. That had been the reward. She remembered reading it on the first morning, in the mirror, in the shock of the new body and the new world and the notification that had not left her room for interpretation.
She had not asked what that meant for him.
The workroom was very quiet. Through the door she could hear the building's afternoon sounds — Ha-eun's voice, distant, something about equipment; Min-seok's response, louder. The normal sounds of a place she had been coming to for eleven weeks and which had, without her planning it, become somewhere she knew.
She closed the system notification.
Sixty-one percent. On track. No action required.
She sat with the closed notification and the question she hadn't been asking and understood, with the clarity that came from things you had been avoiding becoming unavoidable, what the dread was.
She had spent eleven weeks afraid of failing. The number had moved to sixty-one percent and she had discovered that she was also afraid of succeeding — specifically, in the way that success was defined by a system that had assigned her a mission and a penalty and had not, at any point, asked her what she wanted the outcome to be.
She knew what she wanted the outcome to be. She had known for some time. The problem was that it was not the outcome the system was measuring.
She picked up her pen. She opened the manifest she'd been working on before the notification. The columns were very clear. The numbers were very specific.
She worked through them and did not resolve anything and let the afternoon continue around her, the way afternoons did, regardless.
