The briefing lasted forty minutes.
Yoon-seo spent the first five of them learning how to sit like Chae-won. Not slumped — never slumped — but with a particular kind of deliberate stillness that communicated she was present only because she had chosen to be, and could just as easily have chosen not to be. She'd seen it in the fragments of Chae-won's memories. The posture of someone who had been trained since childhood to take up space without appearing to try.
It was, she had to admit, a useful thing to have inherited.
Kwon Si-jun ran the briefing the way she imagined he ran dungeons: efficiently, with no wasted motion. New gate, Sector 7, twelve kilometers outside the city. Class B, preliminary scans showed three floors, standard monster distribution with one anomaly on the second level that the advance team hadn't been able to identify before the gate destabilized. Forty-eight hour window before the gate reached critical pressure. Standard formation, standard gear, depart at six tomorrow morning.
He mentioned Chae-won once, near the end, in the way you'd mention a line item in a budget report.
"Kang-ssi will handle equipment procurement as usual. Ha-eun, coordinate with her on the revised supply list."
Ha-eun nodded without looking up from her notes. Min-seok was drawing something on the corner of his map that Yoon-seo strongly suspected was not tactical. Park Jun-ho typed steadily on his tablet. Nobody asked Chae-won a question. Nobody looked at her expecting input.
The role was clear: sit, fund, don't interfere.
Meanwhile, the second track running in Yoon-seo's head was significantly louder.
Sector 7. Class B. Second floor anomaly.
She knew this dungeon. Not because she'd been there — she'd been Han Yoon-seo, office worker, until approximately eighteen hours ago — but because she'd read it. Chapter nineteen. The team goes in clean, clears the first floor without incident, and then on the second floor Ha-eun steps on a pressure plate hidden under a false section of flooring and the whole corridor floods with a paralytic gas. Nobody dies. But Ha-eun's left shoulder takes damage from the fall, and the team loses four hours backtracking to find another route.
It was a minor scene. The author had used it mostly to give Min-seok a moment to be useful. Yoon-seo remembered it because she had been eating dinner while reading and the detail about the false floor had made her look up from her food.
She looked at Ha-eun — who was still writing notes, left shoulder slightly rolled forward the way people held themselves when they were right-handed and tired — and made a decision.
"The anomaly on the second floor," Yoon-seo said.
Five heads turned.
She kept her voice flat — Chae-won's voice, which had learned somewhere along the way to deliver information as though it were slightly beneath her to be saying it out loud. "There's a pressure plate system in the eastern corridor. False flooring, roughly three meters from the junction. The gas it releases isn't lethal but it's disorienting enough to be a problem in an enclosed space."
Silence.
Si-jun's expression didn't change, but something in his attention sharpened. "How do you know that."
Not a question. A statement with the shape of one.
Good question. Excellent question. I know it because I read about it at my desk while eating leftover rice at eleven PM.
"The Kang family has been funding advance scouting teams for Sector 7 development for the past year," she said instead. "Some of that information doesn't make it into official reports." She paused one beat — not long enough to seem like she was inventing, just long enough to seem like she was choosing what to share. "I read the raw data."
Ha-eun and Min-seok exchanged a look. Park Jun-ho made a note on his tablet. Si-jun held her gaze for a moment longer than comfortable, then turned back to the map.
"We'll flag it for tomorrow. Ha-eun, adjust the approach route for the eastern corridor."
"Got it."
The briefing resumed. Nobody thanked her. Nobody pushed back. The information had simply been absorbed and redistributed, the way useful things were, without ceremony.
Yoon-seo looked back down at the table.
That was fine. That was exactly fine. She hadn't said it for the credit.
She had said it because Ha-eun's shoulder would have hurt for two weeks, and the author had mentioned it in passing and moved on, and Yoon-seo had spent too much of her previous life watching small preventable things happen to people while everyone looked away.
She wasn't going to do that again.
She became aware, around this point, that she was being watched.
Not obviously. Not with any of the open curiosity the others had shown when she spoke. This was quieter than that — a peripheral pressure, the kind you felt before you could locate it. She didn't turn her head. She finished noting down the supply list Ha-eun slid across the table toward her, kept her pen moving, and let her gaze drift in what she hoped looked like absent consideration of the map on the wall.
Kwon Si-woo was looking at her.
He hadn't spoken once during the briefing. He stood slightly apart from the table — present, accounted for, and somehow managing to seem like he was attending a completely different meeting from everyone else. But he was looking at her now, and it was not the indifferent one-second assessment from earlier. This was slower. More deliberate.
The look of someone revising a calculation.
Don't react. Don't look directly at him. You're Chae-won, and Chae-won doesn't get flustered by being looked at.
She turned a page on the supply list that didn't need turning.
---
The briefing ended. The room emptied in the efficient way of people who had somewhere else to be — Ha-eun and Min-seok already arguing quietly about something equipment-related before they'd fully cleared the door, Si-jun pausing to say something to Park Jun-ho in the hallway, their voices fading down the corridor.
Yoon-seo stayed seated.
She waited until the footsteps had fully faded before she let herself exhale — a controlled thing, not quite a sigh, barely audible. She had held Chae-won's posture for forty minutes and her back was beginning to register a complaint. She pressed two fingers to the bridge of her nose and ran quickly through everything she'd just committed to: supply procurement, revised list, Ha-eun's coordination, six AM departure.
Fine. Manageable. Step one: observe, step two: don't die. So far, neither step had been violated.
She reached for her folder.
"Where did Kang-ssi get the information about Sector 7."
She did not drop the folder. She considered this a significant personal achievement.
Kwon Si-woo was still in the room. Standing at the far end of the table, rolling up the tactical map with the unhurried focus of someone who had simply not left yet — had perhaps never intended to leave at the same time as everyone else. He didn't look up while he spoke. His voice was even, conversational, the kind of tone that asked a question while sounding like it had already begun forming theories about the answer.
"Kang family scouts," she said. The same answer she'd given before. Smooth, consistent.
"The Kang family's Sector 7 contracts were suspended eight months ago." He finished rolling the map, set it aside. Still didn't look at her. "I checked them last week. The data you described — pressure plate layout, gas composition — that's not in any advance report I've seen. And I've seen most of them."
Yoon-seo said nothing.
The silence lasted approximately four seconds, which felt considerably longer.
"The information was accurate," she said finally. Not a defense. Just a fact.
"Yes," Si-woo said. "It was."
He picked up the map and moved toward the door. She watched him in her peripheral vision — the same unhurried pace, no visible tension, nothing in his posture to suggest this conversation had been anything other than a minor administrative inquiry.
He stopped at the threshold.
Didn't turn around.
"Chae-won-ssi has changed," he said, the way he might observe that the weather had changed. Mild. Factual. Leaving no obvious opening to disagree with or agree to. "It's interesting."
Then he was gone.
Yoon-seo sat alone in the empty briefing room for a long moment, folder still in her hands, looking at the doorway he had just walked through.
He noticed.
She had been in this body for less than twenty-four hours. She had said one thing — one careful, calibrated thing — and Kwon Si-woo, who according to the system profile had an undetermined true objective and a five-star threat level, had immediately pulled on the thread.
This, she thought, is going to be considerably more complicated than I planned.
