She was awake at five.
Not because an alarm had gone off — she'd set one, but her body had beaten it by twenty minutes, dragging her out of sleep with the particular efficiency of someone who had spent three years waking up before dawn to get a head start on work that would still be unfinished by midnight. Old habits. Useless in most contexts. Occasionally, apparently, not.
The assembly point was a parking structure two blocks from the Sector 7 perimeter, designated neutral ground between the gate and the city. Departure at six. She had an hour.
Yoon-seo did not spend it on her appearance.
She spent it on a twenty-four-hour pharmacy, a convenience store, and a small rice box shop she found three streets over with its lights already on and steam already rising from the kitchen window. The pharmacist looked mildly surprised to see someone in expensive clothes buying eight rolls of compression bandage and two boxes of electrolyte packets before sunrise. She paid in cash — Chae-won's wallet had contained more of it than Yoon-seo had ever held in her life — and didn't explain.
The rice boxes took longer. The woman at the counter had strong opinions about fillings and Yoon-seo, who had been awake for less than an hour and was operating on borrowed adrenaline, found herself agreeing to things she hadn't planned to order. Seven boxes in the end. Mixed fillings. One with extra pickled vegetables because the woman said it was better for sustained energy and Yoon-seo was in no position to argue with someone who had clearly been making rice boxes since before Yoon-seo was born.
She set six of them out on the folding table at the assembly point alongside the medical supplies. The seventh she set slightly apart, off to the side, next to the equipment rack rather than the food table.
No name on it. No note. Just there.
This is not a strategic move, she told herself firmly. This is just — practical. People fight better when they've eaten. That's a documented fact. This has nothing to do with any specific person.
She began sorting the bandages by size and tried to believe herself.
---
Ha-eun arrived first, at quarter to six, and stopped walking when she saw the table.
Not a dramatic stop. Just a small hesitation — the kind that happened when your eyes registered something that didn't match your existing model of a situation. She looked at the rice boxes, then at the medical supplies arranged in neat rows, then at Yoon-seo, who was crouching beside a crate checking inventory and pretending she hadn't noticed the hesitation.
"Did you —" Ha-eun started.
"Supply run," Yoon-seo said, without looking up. "The kit you had last week was missing half its compression stock. I checked before I left."
A pause. "You checked our kit."
"I'm the one who has to use it if something goes wrong." She moved to the next crate. "Take a box before they get cold."
Ha-eun stood there for another second, visibly recalibrating something. Then she took a box.
Min-seok arrived four minutes later, saw the food, said "oh, nice" with the uncomplicated enthusiasm of someone who had not yet been given reason to read anything into the gesture, and took two boxes before Ha-eun stopped him. Park Jun-ho arrived at six sharp, looked at the table, looked at Yoon-seo, looked back at the table with the careful expression of a man cross-referencing what he was seeing against a fairly extensive mental file on Kang Chae-won, and then quietly took a box without comment.
Si-jun arrived at one minute past six, assessed the situation in approximately two seconds, and said nothing at all. He took a box. He ate it standing up while reviewing the map, the same way he would have reviewed the map without the box, and if he found anything notable about the morning's catering arrangements he did not indicate it.
Yoon-seo kept her attention on the inventory.
She heard the footsteps — slightly different from the others, quieter, the particular gait of someone who had learned to move without announcing themselves — and did not look up.
Kwon Si-woo arrived at six-oh-three. She knew this because she was watching the time on her phone screen while appearing to scroll through the supply checklist, which she had already memorized. She heard him stop. A pause — longer than the others had taken to process the table. She kept her eyes on the screen.
In her peripheral vision, she could see the seventh box, still sitting where she'd left it by the equipment rack.
Si-woo moved past the food table without taking anything from it. She heard him check his gear — the sound of buckles, a zipper, something set down and picked up again. Then silence.
The seventh box stayed where it was.
Fine, she thought. That's completely fine. It was a practical decision and the practical decision has been declined and that is entirely irrelevant.
Si-jun called the team to formation. They moved out.
---
She had read about dungeon gates many times. She had read descriptions of the color — that particular bruised-sky purple of a gate at full pressure — and the sound, a low subsonic hum that you felt more in your chest than heard with your ears. She had read characters react to them with awe, with fear, with the practiced indifference of people who had been doing this for years.
None of it had prepared her for the actual scale.
The Sector 7 gate stood forty meters high, roughly oval, its edges flickering with the slow instability of a gate approaching the end of its viable window. The air around it tasted of metal and something else she didn't have a word for — sharp and ancient and wrong in the specific way of things that had come from somewhere that didn't follow the same rules as here.
Yoon-seo stood at the back of the formation and breathed through it.
It's real. Obviously it's real. I live here now. This is just — a gate. People go through these every day. The team has done this hundreds of times.
She went through.
---
The first floor was clean, as she had known it would be.
She stayed in formation, third from the rear, which put her directly behind Min-seok's considerable silhouette and gave her a clear sightline to the rest of the team without being in anyone's way. The fighting, when it happened, was nothing like what she'd imagined from the page — faster and louder and more chaotic, with the team moving in patterns that were clearly deeply practiced but that she had no muscle memory for, no sense of where to be and where not to be.
She learned quickly. She stayed out of the way. She watched.
She watched Ha-eun fight, which was like watching someone do math — precise, efficient, no wasted motion. She watched Min-seok, who was the opposite: big, loud, effective in the way that a falling wall was effective. She watched Si-jun coordinate from the center of every engagement, somehow always in exactly the right position.
And she watched Si-woo.
He fought at the edge of the formation — not behind it, not in the thick of it, but at the periphery, in the spaces the others didn't cover. His ability manifested as shadow: actual darkness, solid and directed, moving the way water moved, finding gaps and filling them. The monsters that encountered it didn't have time to recalibrate. He was methodical about it. No excess, no display.
What she noticed most was that he never stood with his back to anyone for long. Not defensively — not like someone expecting to be attacked. More like someone who had simply never learned to be comfortable with it.
That's not in the character notes, she thought. That's not something the story mentioned. That's just — a thing he does.
She filed it away and kept moving.
---
The junction at the second floor's eastern corridor looked exactly like she'd expected: unremarkable, a split in the passage marked by a support column with a crack running up its left side. The false flooring would be three meters past the column, slightly discolored if you knew to look.
Ha-eun stopped at the column.
She crouched, pressed her fingers lightly to the floor, and then stood and looked back over her shoulder — not at Si-jun, not at the map. At Yoon-seo.
It lasted one second. Less, maybe. Then Ha-eun turned and said, "East route's compromised. We take the auxiliary passage," and the team adjusted without discussion and moved on.
Yoon-seo didn't say anything.
Neither did anyone else.
But she caught — just at the edge of her peripheral vision, just for a moment — Si-woo's gaze moving from Ha-eun to her. Not calculating this time. Something quieter than that. Something she didn't have a category for yet.
She looked away before he did.
---
They came out of the gate at half past seven, into the cooling evening air of the parking structure. The gate behind them flickered twice and stabilized into its post-clear dormancy. Min-seok immediately sat down on a concrete barrier and started talking about dinner. Ha-eun began the equipment check with the focused efficiency of someone who did it the same way every time.
Yoon-seo moved to the folding table to pack up the remaining supplies.
The sixth box was still there — Min-seok had apparently thought better of the second one, or Ha-eun had intercepted it. She picked it up, sorted the leftover medical supplies back into the kit, folded the table.
Then she looked at the equipment rack.
The seventh box was gone.
She stood there for a moment, holding the folded table, looking at the empty space where it had been sitting since six in the morning — through the briefing, through the drive out, through an entire dungeon run. It had been there when they left. It was not there now.
She didn't look around. She didn't ask.
Practical, she reminded herself. It was a practical decision. Someone was hungry. That's all.
She loaded the table into the supply vehicle and did not smile.
She almost managed it.
