The message came on a Thursday, three days after Sector 7, at eleven forty-seven in the morning.
Yoon-seo was in the middle of reviewing the Kang family's Hunter supply contracts — Chae-won's work, technically, which meant it was now her work, which meant she had spent the past three days learning the administrative infrastructure of a chaebol weapons division with the focused desperation of someone who understood that not knowing things in this world had immediate physical consequences.
Her phone lit up. Group message, full team. New gate, residential district, Class B-plus, critical pressure window estimated at four hours. All available members respond.
She was in the car eleven minutes later.
---
The gate was wedged between a convenience store and a dry cleaner in a neighborhood that had clearly not been designed with dungeon emergencies in mind. The perimeter team had cordoned off two blocks in either direction, and there was already a small crowd of residents on the far side of the barriers holding phones up, which meant the footage would be everywhere before the team even went in.
Yoon-seo pulled on her gear and ran the dungeon against her memory.
She knew this one. Not as well as Sector 7 — this had been a less prominent scene, mentioned more for atmosphere than plot — but she remembered the shape of it. Labyrinth-type interior, narrow corridors, high ceilings that became unstable under the vibration of prolonged combat. The author had used it to set up something in chapter twenty-something, a sequence she had read on her lunch break during a particularly bad week at the office when she'd been eating the same convenience store triangle kimbap every day and trying not to think about her performance review.
Someone got trapped. A corridor collapsed.
She could not remember who. She could not remember exactly where.
Useful, she thought. Genuinely, impressively useful information.
She went through the gate.
---
The interior was narrower than Sector 7 and darker in a way that had nothing to do with the lighting — a quality to the air itself, thicker somehow, like the dungeon was conserving something. The ceilings were high and irregular, natural-looking in the way of spaces that had never been built, only grown. The floor was solid but the walls had seams running through them that she did not find reassuring.
First floor: clean. The team moved through it in twenty minutes, efficient and practiced, and Yoon-seo stayed in her position and watched and catalogued and tried harder to remember chapter twenty-something.
It was on the second floor that the dungeon introduced its first complication.
The creature came from a side passage nobody had mapped — large, faster than its size suggested, and it hit the formation from the left flank at exactly the wrong angle. Nobody was hurt, but the team fractured: Ha-eun and Min-seok drove it back toward the main corridor, Si-jun moved to support, and the natural geometry of the space meant that Yoon-seo and the person nearest to her got pushed toward the northern passage as the fighting pulled everyone else south.
The person nearest to her was Kwon Si-woo.
Of course it was.
---
He didn't say anything. He assessed the northern passage — two seconds, maybe three — and moved into it. She followed, because the alternative was standing alone in a dungeon corridor while a large creature made noise somewhere behind her, and that option ranked considerably lower.
The passage was wide enough for two people walking side by side, which meant it was wide enough for one person walking ahead and one person following at a careful distance and both of them pretending this was a normal professional arrangement and not the first time they had been entirely alone together in a space with no exits behind them.
Si-woo moved the way she'd watched him move in Sector 7 — deliberate, reading the space as he went. She watched him touch the wall at each corner before he rounded it, a light press of two fingers that she'd now seen him do three times and still didn't fully understand. Testing for vibration, maybe. Or something the dark ability sensed that she couldn't.
She kept her eyes on the corridor and tried to reconstruct chapter twenty-something from the fragments she had.
Labyrinth dungeon. Corridor collapse. Someone trapped. The scene had been — she'd been eating kimbap, the tuna kind, and she'd had to put it down because — because the collapse had been sudden and the character hadn't seen it coming, and the detail that had made her put down the kimbap was that the warning signs had been visible for the whole chapter if you knew to look for them.
She looked at the walls.
The seams were worse here. Longer, deeper, and in one place she could see where the stone had already begun to separate at a junction point, a dark gap that hadn't been there naturally. The corridor ahead split into a T. Si-woo was moving toward the left branch.
And the left branch's ceiling had three seams converging at a single point directly above the entrance.
Yoon-seo moved.
Not gracefully — she covered the distance between them in four fast steps and got her hand onto the wall of the left passage entrance, putting herself between him and it without any particular plan beyond not that way.
Si-woo stopped.
He looked at her hand on the wall. Then at her face. His expression was unreadable in the low light — not hostile, not confused, just very still in the way he got when he was processing something that didn't fit his existing model.
She opened her mouth to explain.
The ceiling of the left passage came down.
Not all of it — a section, roughly two meters wide, directly at the entrance where Si-woo would have been standing. The sound was enormous in the narrow space, a crack and then a grinding roar and then the particular silence of settled rubble that felt louder than the collapse itself. Dust filled the passage instantly. Yoon-seo had shut her eyes on reflex and when she opened them the left branch was gone, replaced by a wall of stone and debris that reached most of the way to the ceiling.
The right branch was intact.
She became aware that she was not breathing. She corrected this.
Then the floor shook — an aftershock, or a secondary collapse somewhere above them — and a piece of the ceiling further down their own passage cracked loose and dropped, and Si-woo moved faster than she had time to register.
His hand closed around her arm and pulled, hard, and she stumbled back three steps into the alcove formed by the junction, and the darkness came — not frightening, not like before, just suddenly there, solid and close, wrapping around them both in a shape that covered the space they were standing in. She heard the stone hit the floor where she'd been standing. Felt the air move with it.
Then silence again.
The darkness receded. She was standing in the alcove with her back against the wall and Si-woo in front of her, close enough that she could see the dust on his shoulder, his hand still on her arm just below the elbow. He was looking at the rubble on the floor. Not at her.
He let go.
A step back. Two. The careful, deliberate distance he maintained with everyone, reinstated in the time it took her to register it had been gone.
"Move," he said. The same mild, even tone. As though he was suggesting they take the right branch, which was simply the more practical route, and the last forty seconds had been a minor logistical complication.
He went ahead without waiting for her response.
Yoon-seo stood in the alcove for exactly three seconds — she counted — with dust settling on her shoulders and her heart doing something complicated that she was not going to examine right now, in a dungeon, while there were still floors to clear.
That was his ability, she told herself. Reflexive. Protective instinct that any decent fighter would have for the team's healer. Tactically sensible. Nothing more.
The darkness had been warm.
She had not expected that. Every description she'd read had called it cold, oppressive, the particular chill of an ability born from something cursed and lightless. She had filed that description away as fact and not questioned it because she'd had no reason to.
It had been warm. The same temperature as the space around them, or maybe slightly warmer, like standing near something that was quietly, steadily generating heat without meaning to.
That's not in the story, she thought.
She pushed off the wall and followed him into the right branch.
