Nobody got hurt.
That was the thing Yoon-seo kept coming back to on the drive home, sitting in the back of the car with dust still in her hair and her hands folded in her lap. Nobody got hurt. Ha-eun's shoulder was fine. The corridor had collapsed exactly where she'd expected, exactly when it needed to, and the team had come out the other side intact and slightly ahead of schedule.
She should have felt satisfied. She had the information, she had used the information, the information had worked.
Instead she kept thinking about warmth.
Stop it, she told herself. Tactically sensible. That's all.
She looked out the window and watched the city go by and tried to think about supply procurement instead.
---
Ha-eun caught her at the base entrance when they arrived, falling into step beside her with the particular energy of someone who had been deciding whether to say something for the past twenty minutes.
"The corridor," Ha-eun said. Not a question.
"Structural instability," Yoon-seo said. "The seam pattern was consistent with — "
"I know what caused it." Ha-eun looked straight ahead. "I'm asking how you knew before we went in."
A beat. Two.
"I read a lot," Yoon-seo said.
Ha-eun was quiet for a moment. Then: "Okay." She peeled off toward the equipment room without another word, and Yoon-seo watched her go and thought about how much of trust was simply choosing not to push on something that didn't need pushing.
She gathered her things. She went home.
She stood in Chae-won's kitchen at nine in the evening, looked at the brand-new rice cooker still in its box, and made a decision she couldn't entirely explain.
---
The honest answer was that she didn't know why she did it.
It wasn't strategic — she'd already established the supply run routine, the medical kits, the quiet logistics of making herself useful without drawing attention to the fact that she was doing it. She didn't need to add cooking to the list. The rice box shop three streets over was perfectly functional and significantly less likely to result in an overcooked egg.
But she found herself unwrapping the rice cooker anyway, washing the pot, measuring rice with the small cup that came with it. Chae-won's kitchen was extraordinarily well-equipped for someone who appeared never to have used it — good knives, good pans, an entire cabinet of condiments that had clearly been purchased by someone with intentions that had never materialized.
Intentions that hadn't materialized. She knew something about that.
She made rice, slightly too much water. She made eggs, scrambled when she'd meant fried, then corrected course to something in between that she decided to call "rustic." She found kimchi in the back of the refrigerator — store-bought, good brand, probably purchased by whoever managed Chae-won's household — and portioned it into containers.
Seven containers. She noticed she'd made seven without counting, the number simply arriving the way habits did when you'd repeated something enough times for your hands to remember before your brain caught up.
The seventh one she set aside from the others.
Practical, she thought, and didn't bother finishing the sentence.
---
She brought them to base the next morning, a training day with no scheduled runs, and set them on the common room table.
Ha-eun arrived, looked at the containers, looked at Yoon-seo, and took one without a word. This was, Yoon-seo was beginning to understand, Ha-eun's version of enthusiasm.
Min-seok arrived and said "oh, she cooked this time" with the delight of someone receiving unexpected good news, which Yoon-seo found both flattering and slightly alarming given that she hadn't told anyone she was cooking.
"How did you know I made it?"
"Ha-eun texted," he said, already opening a container. He paused. Looked up. "The egg is — interesting."
"It's rustic."
"Right." He took a large bite and chewed thoughtfully. "It's good. The rice is a bit —"
"I know."
Park Jun-ho arrived at his usual time, saw the containers, and said "thank you" in the quiet, slightly formal way of someone for whom the words cost something small but real. She nodded and looked away before he could see that it had landed.
Si-jun came in last, stood at the table for a moment in the considering way he had, and took a container. He opened it, looked at the contents, and said nothing. But he sat down and ate it at the table instead of taking it to his office, which she was fairly certain was not his usual habit, and she filed that away as something.
The seventh container stayed on the far end of the table.
Si-woo came in mid-morning, crossed to the equipment wall to check something, passed the table. He saw the containers — she watched him see them, the slight pause in his movement that he controlled almost immediately. He kept walking. He checked his equipment. He left the room.
The seventh container stayed where it was.
Same as last time, she thought. Fine. The pattern is established. I make seven, he doesn't take his, it disappears later. That's the whole thing. There's nothing more to it than that.
She gathered her bag and headed out to handle the afternoon's supply logistics, which were real and necessary and entirely unrelated to how many containers were left on a table.
---
She was halfway down the corridor when she realized she'd left her phone on the charger in the common room.
She turned back. The door was partially open — she pushed it quietly, not thinking, already mentally calculating whether she had time to stop by the equipment supplier before they closed — and stopped.
Si-woo was standing in the far corner of the room, back to the door, the seventh container in his hands.
He wasn't eating it. He was just — holding it, looking down at it, with an expression she couldn't read from behind and wouldn't have known how to categorize even if she could. Something in the set of his shoulders that she didn't have a word for. Something careful and uncertain in the way he was holding a container of rice and eggs the way someone might hold a thing they didn't fully trust themselves to have.
Like someone who wasn't sure they were allowed.
Yoon-seo stood in the doorway for one second — two — and then moved to the charging station on the wall, unplugged her phone, and turned to leave.
He had turned around. She didn't know when — she hadn't heard him move. He was looking at her now, the container still in his hands, and his face had resolved back into its usual unreadable stillness, but there was something in his eyes that was taking slightly longer to return to neutral than the rest of him.
She met his gaze for exactly as long as it took to establish that she wasn't going to pretend she hadn't seen, and then she looked away and walked to the door.
"The rice is soft."
She stopped.
His voice was the same as always — even, mild, pitched for a room and not a conversation. Like a passing observation about the weather, or the structural integrity of a dungeon corridor. Completely ordinary. The most ordinary sentence she had heard him say.
She didn't turn around.
"I know," she said.
She walked out.
In the elevator going down, she pressed the button for the lobby and stood very still and did not examine the thing happening somewhere in her chest that felt considerably warmer than a comment about rice had any right to produce.
It was one sentence, she told herself. Four words. About rice. Completely unremarkable.
The elevator reached the lobby.
She had been in this world for six days. Kwon Si-woo had spoken to her exactly four times. The first time had been a threat. The second an interrogation. The third a single word in a dungeon corridor.
And the fourth had been about rice.
This, she thought, staring at the lobby doors, is a problem.
