By the end of the first week, Yoon-seo had a routine.
Mornings: the Kang family's administrative files, cross-referenced against everything she could remember from the novel. She was building a map — not a literal one, though she'd started one of those too, pinned to the inside of a cabinet door where Chae-won's housekeeper wouldn't see it — but a map of divergences. Places where what she remembered from the story and what she was finding in the actual data didn't quite line up. There were more of them than she'd expected. The story had been told from one angle, and reality, it turned out, had several more.
Afternoons: base. Logistics, supply runs, the quiet work of making herself useful in ways that didn't require explaining. And the lunchboxes, which she had apparently committed to, because the alternative was stopping and she couldn't think of a good reason to stop that didn't sound, even inside her own head, like a lie.
She had also, she discovered that week, been neglecting something important.
Chae-won's healing ability was not passive. It needed use, needed practice, needed the particular kind of attentiveness that any skill atrophied without. The original Chae-won had used it rarely and reluctantly — a tool she deployed for leverage, not out of any particular investment in the people she was healing. The ability had responded accordingly. It worked, but it worked the way an unused muscle worked: slowly, effortfully, requiring more concentration than it should.
Yoon-seo found the base's training room empty most mornings before nine and started using it.
---
She was halfway through a practice set on the third morning — working on precision rather than volume, trying to direct the healing response to a specific point rather than broadcasting it generally — when she became aware that the doorway was no longer empty.
She didn't stop. She finished the sequence, let the light fade from her hands, and looked up.
Si-woo was standing at the threshold, not inside the room, in the particular way he had of occupying a space without quite committing to it. He was looking at her hands. Not her face — her hands, where the healing had just been visible, with an expression she was starting to recognize as his version of genuine attention.
Three seconds. Maybe four.
Then he was gone, footsteps already fading down the corridor, and Yoon-seo was left in the training room with her hands in her lap and the distinct impression that she'd just been assessed by someone who wasn't sure yet what he was looking for.
He keeps doing that, she thought. Showing up in doorways. Looking and leaving.
She started the next sequence and tried to concentrate on precision.
---
The collision — almost-collision — happened that afternoon.
She was coming out of the records room with a stack of equipment manifests she'd offered to sort, because Park Jun-ho had looked overwhelmed and she had a system and it had seemed like a reasonable thing to do. The corridor outside was narrow, and she was reading the top sheet while she walked, which was objectively poor spatial awareness but a habit she'd never managed to break in her previous life and apparently hadn't broken yet in this one.
Si-woo came around the corner from the opposite direction.
She stopped in time. He stopped in time. The stack of manifests did not go anywhere, which she counted as a personal victory. The distance between them was close enough that she could see the slight adjustment in his expression — not startlement exactly, more a rapid recalculation — before it smoothed out again.
He took one step back. Deliberate, unhurried. Reinstating the distance he apparently kept as a matter of policy.
"Sorry," she said, because she had been reading while walking and that was objectively her fault.
He didn't respond to that. He looked at the manifests in her hands, then at her face, and something shifted in his expression that she couldn't name before he looked away.
"Chae-won-ssi."
She waited.
He wasn't looking at her — looking at the wall to her left, the particular quality of not-looking that she'd started to understand was how he organized his thoughts before speaking. His voice was the same as always: even, mild, not inflected toward anything.
"I don't know what you're doing." A pause, measured. "The lunchboxes. The dungeon information. Coming in early to practice." Another pause. "I don't know what the objective is."
The objective, she thought, is survival. The objective is not getting my soul permanently erased. The objective is —
She said nothing. She waited for the rest.
"I'm advising you not to get closer to me," he said. "Whatever the reason."
The corridor was quiet. Somewhere further down the hall, she could hear Min-seok's voice, too far away to make out words. The normal sounds of a building occupied by people.
"Why?" she asked.
Not a challenge. Not skepticism. An actual question, asked in the same even register he used, because she wanted to know what answer he had — what story he'd told himself about this, what he believed.
He turned and looked at her directly for the first time since she'd nearly walked into him.
His eyes were very steady. The kind of steady that came not from calm but from practice — from having looked at difficult things long enough that the looking itself stopped costing anything.
"Because people who get close to me regret it," he said. "Eventually."
Not a threat. She understood that immediately, in the way you understood the difference between someone telling you a road was dangerous and someone threatening to make it dangerous. This was information. This was something he had learned, tested against experience, and arrived at as fact.
He believed it completely.
Yoon-seo looked at him — at the steadiness in his eyes that had nothing to do with indifference and everything to do with someone who had decided the most honest thing he could do for another person was warn them away early — and felt something in her chest shift slightly to the left of where it had been.
He thinks he's doing you a favor, she thought. He genuinely thinks this is the kind thing.
She held his gaze for one moment longer. Then she said:
"Okay."
He waited. The same way she'd waited for the rest of his sentence — expecting more. A qualification, a pushback, an explanation. The normal shape of a response to what he'd just said.
She didn't give him one.
She shifted the manifests to her other arm, nodded once — the small, professional nod of someone who has received a piece of information and is filing it appropriately — and walked past him down the corridor.
She made it ten steps.
Behind her, she heard it — barely, just at the edge of audible, the kind of sound that wasn't quite words and wasn't quite silence. A short exhale. The faintest suggestion of someone adjusting to an outcome that hadn't gone the way they'd mapped it.
She didn't look back.
Okay wasn't the answer he'd expected. She'd known it wouldn't be, which was exactly why she'd said it. You couldn't argue with okay. You couldn't follow up on okay. Okay acknowledged without conceding, received without accepting, and left no thread to pull.
She had spent three years in offices full of people who tried to manage her with language, and she had learned a long time ago that the most destabilizing response to a warning was to simply take it at face value and keep moving.
The manifests needed sorting.
She went to sort them.
And she did not examine, in any depth whatsoever, the fact that his voice when he'd said eventually had sounded less like a warning and considerably more like a thing he was tired of being true.
